Ringworm Infection in Hamsters

PrintPrint

Treatment

Before actually treating the hamster, a veterinarian will likely to shave and clean the affected area so that the antifungal medication applied, such as griseofulyin, is effectively absorbed. In addition, iodine-rich scrubs and antifungal ointments may be applied directly to the affected areas. To further improve the hamster's condition, a veterinarian may suggest the use of vitamin and mineral supplements.

Living and Management

The recovering hamster should be placed in a separate cage. When handling the animal, wear disposable gloves and wash your hands thoroughly afterward.

Prevention

Cleaning and sanitizing the cages regularly, as well as providing a stress-free environment for your pet, can help reduce the incidences of ringworm infection.
