Tokyo’s Snake Cafe Caters to Reptile Lovers

Snake lovers, rejoice! Tokyo is home to a snake cafe located at Tokyo Snake Centre in the fashion district of Harajuku.

While cat cafes have gained plenty of attention in recent years, it’s the reptiles’ time to shine with the addition of what may be the first cafe of its kind. This is a place where reptile fans can get cozy with some scaly pals while enjoying their afternoon tea.

The cafe was opened by Mr. Hisamitsu Kaneko in August 2015. Kaneko told Mirror, “I was initially interested in environment conversation, and in that context, I wanted to show people the good parts about animals, so I started this cafe.”

In addition to an assortment of teas, coffees, sweets and snacks, Tokyo’s snake cafe houses 35 snakes from 20 different non-venomous species that are available to their cafe’s customers to interact with.

Snake cafes aren’t like the usual cat cafes where the animals are free to roam about. On the contrary, customers get to choose one snake they’d like to have at their table from an assortment of snakes in clear cases. Once you choose a snake you like, the snake ‘attendant’ case will be brought to your table.

In you want more face time with your scaly pal, the Tokyo Snake Centre offers the option of holding and petting the snakes, which includes being draped by a few non-poisonous snakes.

The entrance fee to get into the cafe covers one drink, the company of a snake in a case and unlimited photo opportunities. The optional petting session is an additional fee. If you’re a reptile lover, this snake cafe should be the top of your list of things to do in Harajuku.

According to Kaneko in an interview with Weird Wild World, many of the cafe’s visitors are afraid of the reptiles, or they come a misconception of what snakes are actually like. “However, after looking at them, touching them, many people say when leaving the cafe, ‘I’m really healed now,’” Kaneko says.
