With all of the bad news that has been coming to light concerning pets that have been given up due to financial difficulties, it is heartening to know that there are still people who are actively committed to saving and rehoming these animals.

One such person is Rachael Ray, a nationally recognized chef who has combined a tour to promote her new book, Look + Cook, with a fund-raising tour to benefit animal charities and shelters. Using her own line of pet foods as a springboard for fund-raising, Ray has committed all of the proceeds from sales of the food to support animal welfare initiatives, educational outreach, medical care, rescue, and adoption. Ray is working side-by-side with the animal welfare organization, The Best Friends Animal Society, to distribute the money. The goal is to distribute $775,000 by the end of 2010.

During her visit to Connecticut, Ray presented a $7,500 check to Adopt-A-Dog, and in New Jersey, she presented $7,500 to Husky House, whose administrators said the funds would go directly to their medical fund. In addition to the organized donations she is making to various pet rescue and care groups across the U.S., Ray is assisting in pop-up adoption events at some specially chosen book signing venues.

Upcoming stops include events being held in Oakbrook, IL on December 10; Austin, TX on December 14; and Dallas, TX on December 15. Ray is being assisted in her endeavor by the Best Friends Animal Society, a “no-kill” organization that is engaged in rehoming as many abandoned pets as possible by reaching out to fellow pet care organizations around the country.
