Petfinder.com has launched their third annual Foster A Lonely Pet For The Holidays. With the mantra that everyone deserves a home for the holidays, Petfinder.com has teamed up with hundreds of shelters and rescue groups to try and find each animal housed there at least a temporary home for Christmas Eve through New Year’s Day.

The program was created based on Greg Kincaid’s book-turned-movie, "A Dog Named Christmas." In it a young man tries to convince his community to adopt a dog for Christmas to support the local animal shelter.

The goal of Foster A Lonely Pet For The Holidays has always been to spread the awareness about fostering, an often unrecognized way to support local animal shelters. This helps get animals temporary homes, and also gives hard working shelter employees and volunteers some much-needed time off.

"Many people do not realize just how important fostering is among the animal welfare community," said Betsy Banks Saul, the co-founder of Petfinder.com. "Animal shelters across North America have to euthanize adoptable pets simply because they are so overcrowded. However, by fostering, people can give pets a place to stay while they wait for their forever home."

A list of participating shelters can be found here. Staff at each of the shelters can answer questions on the process and help match foster parents up with the right pet for their lifestyle.
