Q. Is the Pred-X causing the muscle loss or could it be mast cells causing this inside her ear canal, X-rays showed infection eating the bone. Thankyou.

Answered By

A. If the radiograph shows "eating of the bone" (erosion) I assume this is her inner ear that is infected. Prednisone does not cause this, neither does the mast-cells degranulating histamine. Prednisone is most likely being used to quel any inflammation and redness in the ear canal from the infection. If the inner ear is also infected, your pet should be in oral antibiotics. If you are concerned regarding these questions, you should ask for a second opinion at a referral veterinary hospital near you.

A. Muscle wasting occurs in older dogs. It can be exacerbated by chronic pred use. There may not be too many options if your dog needs the pred for her condition. Discuss options with your veterinarian.
