Q. My dog has severe shoulder pain. I do not have near term access to a vet. What can I get at a drug store until I can see a vet

Answered By

A. It is unwise ever to give any medication to a dog without the express approval of your vet. Aspirin, Tylenol. Advil, Aleve, Motrin and other such drugs are toxic to dogs and should be avoided. There is pain medication the vet can prescribe, and if your dog is really suffering you might consider a trip to an emergency clinic tonight. The other danger in giving medications without first seeing the vet is that they can mask symjptoms when the vet does get to do an exam.
