Q. What is the best food for a large breed puppy that is not super expensive? Is grain free better than grain dog food? Too many choices!

Answered By

A. Your want to feed him a high quality puppy food, preferably from a pet specialty store and not the grocery store. Check the ingredient label on the back. Things you want to see are a specific (like lamb, chicken, fish and not generalized "meat") meat or meat meal, as the first 1-2 ingredients. You don't want anything that just says "meat meal" or meat by product. You also don't just want grains as the first few ingredients and definitely not corn. Better quality carbs are rice, potatoes or peas (instead of corn or wheat). When in doubt you can look up brands on www.dogfoodadvisor.com and they have an easy to follow rating system and breakdown of ingredients.
