Q. My 17.2 pound dachshund/beagle is 8 years old. He has lost weight, now 14.8 pounds. He has a normal appetite, but has very itchy skin. Acts healthy.

A. I would recommend getting him in for a thorough check up with your vet. He isn't very old, but has reached senior age. It would be helpful to rule out any early onset or underlying illness he may have, and discuss any dietary changes he may benefit from.

I would also have him checked for parasites on his skin (like fleas) which may be causing him to itch.

Have you recently changed to a new type of food or on his regular bag of food recently noticed his food has changed, check labels for things like "new & improved" or "Now, more added (blank)" as these can indicate formula changes that he could have a sensitivity/allergy to.
