Q. I have a lab that has a swollen back left leg is there any ho.e remedy for this

Answered By

A. For swollen limbs this can be tricky. There are several causes of swelling's which can include 1)Edema- usually means a blockage of the lymphatic system to that limb 2) Inflammaiton/infection- trauma to the limb or a disease process that is causing severe swelling (i.e. Hypertrophic osteodystrophy- very common in labs at this age).

So it really depends on the inciting factor that is causing the swelling to guide your treatment of the swollen limb. And often times these diseases will be accompanied by overall fever and inappetance.

If there is "heat" coming from the swelling, it never hurts to attempt short ice pack applications to the area for 5-10 minutes 2 times a day until you can seek veterinary assistance, but I highly recommend you get a professional involved here.

A lot of over the counter medications (especially Tylenol!) are potentially dangerous in pets and so I can't recommend them for this particular situation involving your pet.

Good luck at the vet's office!
