Q. I have a boxer mix 3 mths old. Right eye is red inside and swollen around the eyelid area. What could it be. there is no tearing or discharge.

Answered By

A. Poor puppy. Sounds like it could be an acute localized allergic reaction to a possible bug bite near the eyelid.
For localized reactions you can try topical cold compresses on the eyelid, while holding your pets eye closed for 2-3 minutes. Some pets won't tolerate this, that's ok.
Also Benadryl given @ 1mg/lb every 12 hrs for anti-histamine effects for the suspected allergic reaction. Also a thorough flushing of the eye surface taking care not to poke the eye, with an sterile eye irrigating solution over the counter, to remove any potential debris.

If you notice any discharge at all or if the eye worsens within the next 24 hrs it is recommended to have a vet take a look for other possibilities and further treatment.
