Q. Hard swollen teat on lactating chihuahua. I have started warm compresses. What else can I do? We are not able to afford a vet.

A. The most common reason in suckling mothers for hard, hot swellings is mastitis - an infection in milk producing glands. This can progress to a serious, lifethreatening condition for both mother and puppies and needs to be treated as soon as possible - contact your local charitable organisations for advice or subsidies available to help you in helping your pet
