Q. My cat often has a runny nose. It is just clear, and it usually appears when she first wakes up. 14 months old. Some chaffing on right side nostril

A. Viral infections and allergies to products such as airfresheners and cleaning chemicals are common causes of clear nasal discharge in cats. I would avoid any chemicals which are strongly scented etc for a week or so to see if it improves but I would be a little concerned at the early skin damage that this may be ulceration from feline herpes virus. Lysine supplements are available specifically for cats and may help to reduce the severity of the condition. If things don't dry up I would recommend a full health check and possible x-ray to investigate any underlying factors
