Q. My small poodle, Waldo, is approx 12 years old. He has lost much of his hearing quite fast. Meds Zymox, optic-hc and flushing - no help. What to do?

A. Unfortunately some older dogs do lose hearing as a result of age related change. Sudden hearing loss can be associated with rupture to the ear drum also so it may be worthwhile to get an in depth otoscopic exam, possibly with sedation to ensure the full ear can be examined completely. It is not unknown for older dogs to develop cognitive dysfunction, similar to dementia whereby they can become less responsive to owners and this can appear like reduced hearing also so monitor for reactions to all sounds to rule this out as this can often be treated with medication
