Q. My dog won't stop coughing..she has dry heaves, it sounds like. It is 2:00 in the morning and I can't reach a vet. What should I do.

A. I would first ensure that there is no obvious obstruction in your dog's mouth by safely checking the mouth and the visible portion of the throat. There may be a 24 hour veterinary emergency clinic in your area that you could go to if you are concerned. The dry heaves may indicate he is nauseous or there is an obstruction. The sooner you can take your dog to a veterinarian to be evaluated the better. They might recommend performing xrays depending on the severity of his condition.
