Q. My dog has a horrible cough, all blood work, xrays were normal, the only thing thats helped short term was prednisone, could he have asthma?

Answered By

A. Canine asthma, or allergic bronchitis, is not easy to diagnose. It can sometimes be seen on xray but frequently other diagnostics may be required. These may include a transtracheal wash, bronchoalveolar lavage or bronchoscopy. Samples are typically collected for pathology and culture. Heartworm disease, collapsed trachea, cardiac disease and intestinal parasite infection should all be ruled out as potential causes as well.
