Q. My 6 year old Doberman has started nipping at people that he knows very well when the start to leave. Any idea what is causing this behavior?

Answered By

A. It may be fear or anxiety related. As the time nears for guests to leave, place a leash on your dog. When behavior occurs, stop and use a chosen word (No, Leave it, etc) to mark the bad behavior. Take his leash and lead him away. If he knows basic obedience commands, put him in a sit or stay position. You may also distract him with a toy or task before guests leave. Whatever you choose, be sure to praise and reward the appropriate behavior and correct negative behavior immediately. If it continues or intensifies, consider a consult with a veterinary behaviorist and trainer.
