Q. We recently rescued an elderly dog who doesn't bark, seems mostly deaf but reacts fearfully to even quiet high pitched sounds. Is this unusual??

Answered By

A. It may take some time for your dog to acclimate to his new home. A BAER test is the only 100% reliable method for determining that a dog is deaf or to determine degree of hearing loss. Calming pheromone collars or sprays may be effective in easing any fears or anxiety. Cognitive dysfunction (senility) should be ruled out if your see your vet about testing your dog's hearing.
