Q. I have two feral cats. They are still pretty skittish. What can I do to settle them down?

Answered By

A. If they seem stressed or anxious, try to determine and reduce or eliminate the offending stimulus present in your home. If that isn't possible, calming pheromone collars or sprays may be effective. Frequent handling, moving slowly, speaking softly, offering treats and positive attention can help calm them down. Once they are old enough, they can be spayed which will also help. What won't help is high traffic/activity, loud speaking or noises and chasing or scolding.

A. Hiding places are important for cats, make sure they have boxes or places to go under and hide when they feel the need to.

You can try Feliway diffuser, it is well known to settle down nervous cats. You can buy it online or at any pet shop.

Catnip products can be helpful as well.
