Q. K9 age 4 M/N Rx's Trazodone 50 mg bid; Fluoxetine 20 mg qd; Famotidine 20 mg bid. Licks frequently - his flank, the dog bed, the couch, the floor. ???

Answered By

A. The licking may be a manifestation of anxiety. Distract him with a task or toy when he starts licking. Try to determine and reduce or eliminate the offending stimulus. If that isn't possible, calming pheromone collars or sprays may be effective in conjunction with the meds he is on. Compression shirts such as the ThunderShirt may help as well.
