Q. My dog had routine blood work done today (for dental cleaning) and his ALT is 230. Should I be very concerned?

Answered By

A. Bloodwork is a 'snapshot' in time. It should be evaluated in conjunction with other clinical findings and a physical exam. Discuss your concerns with your vet regarding moving forward with anesthesia. If there is significant periodontal disease, the cleaning may be required to prevent systemic or chronic illness in the future. The liver enzymes will likely require monitoring. Your vet can recommend liver friendly supplements if indicated.
