Q. Mickey is a Sheltie about 8-10 yrs old. He has been making a hacking noise a lot ...especially after he drinks water or eats. And crackle sounds wit.

A. A crackling or wheezing sound with coughing may indicate a problem with the upper respiratory tract, lungs or heart. You may also see other symptoms such as decreases in energy, lethargy, or exercise intolerance, or even discharge from the nose in addition to coughing or wheezing. As these symptoms can be caused by a variety of issues it is best to schedule a veterinary checkup for a complete exam and to determine what the cause could be. Be sure to keep your dog comfortable with limited activity if he is experiencing symptoms after being active until you can get to the vet.

If at any time he has any labored breathing, appears in extreme distress or turns blue on the tongue or gums, it may indicate a medical emergency which should be treated immediately.
