Q. What is the best way to discipline a new puppy?

Answered By

A. As a positive based dog trainer, in my opinion the best way is to replace the unwanted behavior with an appropriate behavior by showing the dog what you expect of him.

For example, if your dog is chewing on something like a soft pillow, trade the dog the pillow with a different type of toy that is not soft such as a Nylabone. This teaches the dog that soft items are not good chew toys by giving him a new and different material.

Also, management and redirection are important. A dog works much better under positive direction in favorable conditions as opposed to fear of negative consequences.
