Q. My dog's rectum is hanging out is this as serious as it looks? What has to be done? Surgery? Or can it be resolved without surgery? Thank you

A. It sounds like there is rectal prolapse. According to the condition of the intestine, if it viable it can be placed back into position by your vet under sedation /Ga and a purse string suture applied to keep it in place. Go and see a vet now though, the sooner the better. It's an emergency.
