Q. How do I know if my dog has mange or just a mild skin infection and is it contagious?

Answered By

A. Some kinds of mange (sarcoptic but not Demodex) are also contagious to humans and other animals. The vet can look at samples of your dog's skin and hair under a microscope, but it's impossible to tell by looking at the dog.

A. You can tell if your dog has mange by seeing a veterinarian in person. I would recommend that you make an appointment if you have skin concerns with your dog. It shouldn't be contagious IF it's mange but it could be other things such as fleas, ringworm or something else. If it's something else like fleas or ringworm that can be passed to other pets in the house. Ringworm from your dog can be passed to humans as well. Please see a vet for a proper diagnosis.
