Q. My dog recently had his toenail coterized, maybe a week ago. Today the swelling is so bad it looks so painful. What can I give him to help relieve sw

A. You can put an icepack on it, same as you would for a human injury, for up to 10 minutes every few hours if he'll tolerate it. Don't give him any human medications, because they're not safe for dogs. Call your vet in the morning. The vet may want to recheck the nail to make sure it isn't infected and might prescribe anti-inflammatory meds to reduce the swelling and relieve discomfort.
