Q. My cat has a gash on the exterior of his ear. His ear itself is not cut, but it looks like a gash. I can't identify how deep it is. What should I do?

A. If it is bleeding a lot then it is best to try and apply pressure and take it to your vet straight away to examine and possibly suture. If it isn't bleeding you can clean it with salty water and allow it to heal by itself. It it starts to ooze or has pus then you need to see your vet for antibiotics. For the salty water put one teaspoon of salt in a pint of boiled water and leave it to cool down.
