  • 1. Beautiful on the Surface, Horrible behind the scenes...

    by: Mars007

This shelter is beautiful on appearances. The cats and dogs are in little rooms with clear plexi-glass and doors. Plenty of light, plenty of room...The staff is for the most part very cold. Behind the scenes - what you DON'T see - is that stray animals are turned away daily. Orphaned newborn kittens & puppies are turned away or put down. Cats who hiss and dogs who growl because they are frightened and overwhelmed are deemed "unadoptable" and put down. Cats with diabetes, FIV, FeLV, and even previous irinary tract infections - all put down without a thought. Tiny kittens who are scared and hiding, a day later can be purring and loving. But they are not given a chance. Only "perfect" animals are safe here, and that is not "low-kill". Instead adopt from a shelter who gives animals a chance...

    Pros

animals are not in cages, but instead in plexi-glass

    Cons

Many many animals are put down without good reasons, cold staff, politics

    by: kbehrendt

I absolutely love this humane society, I adopted my dog here, and we've gone through two classes already, as well as the dog behavior seminar. Aside from the beautiful facility and well-cared for and socialized animals, my favorite thing about WIHS is the programs. They've got so many things you can get involved in to improve yourself and your relationship with animals, and even their store has some really great treats and toys. The staff working on the adoption end is kind of hit or miss, some of them have been very helpful and knowledgeable, while others I questioned what they were doing there. The staff for seminars and dog behavior/shy dog classes though, were amazing and highly qualified.

    Pros

    Large, lots of resources

    Cons

    n/a

  • 3. So So Experience

    by: jkrueger

I visited this shelter when my friend was looking for a cat. The building and facilities are beautiful, but I don't fee the staff or the procedures were adopter friendly. In order to visit with a cat you had to register and fill out an application. I think there was an hour wait the day we were there. The animals were incased in glass so there was absolutely no interaction available as you looked. This is a comment I have heard from many people because I am an adoption counselor at my local shelter. There didn't seem to be any staff to interact with or ask for help.

    Pros

    Beautiful building, very clean

    Cons

    Poor service to prospective adopter

  • 4. Good Shelter

    by: NSchwechel

While the shelter looks good and has lots of space for the animals sometimes the staff can be a bit rude or unwelcoming.

    Pros

Very roomy. Animals get lots of space

    Cons

    customer service

  • 5. So-So

    by: granbarb

This is a beautiful facility but I didn't exactly feel warm, friendly vibes from the staff or volunteers. Wonderful building but that's it.

    Pros

    Clean and beautiful

    Cons

    not very friendly

  • 6. Beautiful building

    by: chocho

I went there to get a cat and was very disappointed with the setup. First you could not really see the cats because they were all in glass enclosures. I asked to see one cat and was told to fill out a form and wait my turn. I really could not interact with the cats to see if that was the one I was interested in. Needless to say I left without meeting any cats. Maybe I am just used to smaller shelters where you can get closer to the animals.

    Pros

    wonderful facilities

    Cons

very hard to meet the animals

  • 7. Nice shelter

    by: dumbdog

I have visited this shelter a few times. I have Never felt very welcome there, Noone ever asked if I has any question or needed any kind of help. Once I talked with one of the staff there and they were very rude and didn't seem to care about what I was saying. I was very turned off by this and would not reccommend going to this shelter if you are not sure what your looking for they are not helpful. On the good side I do like how that facility is set up. Dogs and cats are kept in nice rooms that look spacious. Also every species is kept in a separate area of the shelter, that makes it easy to find what ever you are looking for.

    Pros

    Nicely set up

    Cons

    Not very friendly

  • 8. Great facililty

    by: Katt3

This shelter has great facilities. They have each dog and cat in their own little room which is great. Their customer service leaves a little to be desired but for the most part its a great place.

    Pros

    Great facility

    Cons

    customer service

  • 9. Beautiful building

    by: DaleF

We enjoyed seeing this shelter when we visited. However, the staff is not very friendly and you have to fill out an application just to see an animal. The building has some very cool features, but the cat area seems a little small. The dog rooms are very large. I didn't get as warm of a feeling here as other shelters we visited.

    Pros

    Very neat building

    Cons

    Far drive

  • 10. Animal Antics

    by: GigiBTGL

This pet shop is well stocked with supplies for dogs, cats and small animals. The profits go directly to the humane society which is really nice. You can get your monthly supply of food here as well as toys and treats for your pet. They also carry clothing and other fun pet related items. Please visit them often. They have a great staff of volunteers that wait on you in the shop too!

    Pros

Large selection of high quality supplies

    Cons

    None

  • 11. Largest Shelter around

    by: JannaO

WHS is a shelter that provides many services to the community including low cost spay/neuter, feral cat programs and wildlife rehabilitation to name a few. They have a large selection of animals to choose from. I am saddened that they have decided to sue a smaller shelter over a name issue. We are all here to help and should not have in-fighting.

    Pros

    Many animals to choose from

    Cons

    politics

  • 12. MY thoughts

    by: joanneburns

The wisconsin Humane Society cares more about the apperance of the new bulding than they do about the animals.I know this because i know several people that work there or had worked there in the past. The animal care techs know what they are doing its the upper managment that are making poor decions. I feel that the old bulding they were in the animals got more and better care.Ihave a dog from this shelter we also recued a lop eared rabbit that was going to be put down collin live 8years with us before he passed. i

    Pros

    BETTER BULDING

    Cons

    POOR UPPER MANAGMENT

  • 13. Clean place

    by: Greg12

While we think this shelter is obviously very neat and clean, we weren't able to just visit with the pets. You needed to fill out an application before you could do anything. Sometimes you just need time to look around before you want to adopt.

    Pros

    Nice area for the dogs

    Cons

Couldn't just visit with the pets

  • 14. Beautiful building

    by: cf14

There is no doubt Wisconsin Humane Society is a beautiful shelter. They have wonderful cat rooms, great dog rooms and little "sayings" and brochures everywhere. Any shelter would like to look like this one. \r\n

    Pros

    Beautiful building

    Cons

Need to fill out application just to see animals

  • 15. Volunteering

    by: domdes36

You can volunteer as young as thirteen but must join with an adult of the years 18 or older...it was definitely an amazing experience!

    Pros

You get great experience and have a good time with the staff and animals.

    Cons

Gets a little stinky but hey thats expected :)

  • 16. Best of the Best

    by: killersim

a great shelter and care facility all in one. With a wonderful vet and shop inside the shelter, everything you need to get an excellent start with a pet is there for you. Everything is clean and there are ample places for pets to get excersize or be trained. The staff and trainers are all very interested in the welfare of both the animals in the shelter and those who have been adopted, they go out of their way to make sure that a person is capable of taking care of an animal and supply every item you would need. \nThey start you off with a month of insurance, adoption packs with food and toys, training, and information videos. Out of every shelter i've seen the WI Humane Society is easily one of the best.

    Pros

    clean, safe, hospitable

    Cons

    short-staffed, long waiting periods

  • 17. Store proceeds help the shelter

    by: cmh9023

I like shopping at Animal Antics inside WHS because I know shopping there supports the shelter. The prices are reasonabel and they have a nice selection.

    Pros

Some of the proceeds from sales go to the shelter

    Cons

    Its really small

  • 18. A very nice shelter

    by: cmh9023

I adopted one bun from WHS and had a couple of bunny dates there for one of my other buns who had lost her partner. It's an incredible facility, but I wish they'd teach their adoption counselors and volunteers more about rabbits. They have a nice little play area for the rabbits, but the counselor I worked with didn't know at all how to hold a rabbit and couldn't understand why he was struggling when he held him but was calm when I held him. It seems amazing for dogs and cats though.

    Pros

    A beautiful, modern facility

    Cons

Not sure they are great at bunny knowledge

  • 19. Amazing shelter

    by: Pughouse

This is an awesome shelter! I had my SAFER certification courses here and got a full tour. The whole place is set up well and they seem like there is plenty of staff and they said over 800 volunteers. This is a great shelter for the surrounding comunities too; as they accept Rescue Wagon dog transports!

    Pros

    size and local laws

    Cons

    seperate stray facility

  • 20. WHS

    by: jerry123

Although I've never been to WHS, the animals from our shelter often get transported there, and the staff seem to be so dedicated and love what they do. I have heard they have an immaculate shelter that everyone should go check out. Keep up the great work!

    Pros

    Great shelter!

    Cons

    none

  • 21. An Impressive Facility

    by: julez1

This is an impressive facility. The dogs have glass suites so they don't hear each other barking. It is much less stressful than other shelters. Each cat also has a suite with a cat tower. They have the advantage of a big city with many donors. Their dogs move fast, so if you see one on their site you have to get down there pronto! The dogs are color coded to tell you what kind of home they need.

    Pros

The facility is beautiful, the animals are well cared for.

    Cons

    None
