  • 1. Definatly could use the $1,000,000

    by: labluv12

WCAS could definatly use the 1 million dollar makeover. They need more room in their shelter and need to turn into a no-kill shelter. I know they try their best to make as much room as possible but really they just need more building space. They euanthenize way too many animals each year due to either no space or not enough money for veterinary care. I really do hope they win Shelter Makeover II

I am a new volunteer and have found fellow people who are just as passionate about animals as I am- and that's a LOT! Volunteers are always needed so if anyone wants to get involved come in for a volunteer application: Winnebago County Div. of Animal Services 4517 N. Main Street (North of Riverside on the right near nursing home), Rockford, IL 61103, 815-877-3073.

    Pros

    Adoptable dogs aren't euthanized.

    Cons

Need more volunteers to assist in adoptions and animal care.

Winnabago County animal Services does a wonderful job. and the county should recognize all who work or volunteer for the services they do. More funding should and could be given. \r\n\r\nWe have never adoped an animal before from a shelter and the whole process was excellent. Help was given from the front desk to the kennel to when we walked out the door with our new family member.\r\n\r\nOur dog Levi was temperment tested, vet checked nutured, micro chiped, and heartworm tested, plus all his yearly shots and a take home helpful packet which included a voucher for us to take him to our vet for a check up paid for by the county. We adopted Levi on May 5,2008. \r\n\r\nThe kennel was clean, all animales looked cared for, and a helpful staff that knew there job. AA+ Thank You Joe & Donna Nemetz

    Pros

My husband and I we very impressed with how clean, the good care the animals recieved and the staff was the best. We adopted our dog on May 5,2008 Levi fits our house like a favorite glove. He came with all his needed shots, vet check by animal services and a voucher for us to take him to our vet for a free all around check. This is the first time we have ever adopted a animal from a county shelter and it was A +

    Cons

As far as the winnabago county animal shelter is concerned thank goodness this county has one to help all the animals that people with no kindness or respomsibility abandon or mistreat.

    by: LoHaas

I have not visited your Shelter but have looked at the photos that have been submitted and can tell you are a good Shelter doing a Great Job. It appears you have some really great volunteers to help You and some good areas for your dogs to play. Keep up the good work for all the homeless animals that come to You!

    Pros

    Cons

  • 5. This shelter needs more space!

    by: slyone109

I volunteered at a no kill shelter for 3 years, I had a hard time coming to this shelter, as they are a shelter that puts animals down due to space. While I would find it a great place to work, and volunteer I just cant knowing that they cant house what is brought in, therefore, many are put down. I want this shelter to win so they can expand and hopefully, house and adopt more rather than put down our furry friends. They need a play room for the cats, they need more space for the sick that come in, they need more space for aiding the injured, and caring for the young. I just wish more could be done. I also wish Boone County would do something for cats!

    Pros

    Clean, well cared for animals

    Cons

Space to house more- and put down less

  • 6. IN NEED OF A MORE FOSTER HOMES FOR ANIMALS

    by: ktswanson

FOSTER FAMILIES SAVE MANY LIVES OF CATS,KITTENS,DOGS AND PUPPIES THAT ARE NOT READY TO GO UP FOR ADOPTION BECAUSE OF MANY REASONS. WETHER IT BE AGE, HEALTH OR TEMPERMENT. SPREADING THE WORD ON THE NEED OF MORE FOSTER HOMES AND FAMILIES IS GREATLY NEEDED. MANY ANIMALS JUST NEED THAT LITTLE EXTRA BIT OF HELP TO MAKE THE "ADOPTABLE" STATUS. HELP US SPREAD THE WORD, WE NEED YOUR HELP. \r\n\r\n

They like to br brushed and played with too!! I also like to bring salt and mineral blocks as well as fruits and veggies for the rabbits and ferrets!! There are such a wide variety of animals waiting to go to a loving home! PLEASE, PLEASE stop be and help us out by adopting or voluntering or both!!

  • 9. They have very nice dogs!

    by: Cbranda

This shelter really has a bunch of nice dogs to adopt. They get all kinds. Purebreds and dogs of all sizes and the dogs really seem happy in the adoption ward. The volunteers and staff do a great job. Very nice cats too but too many. I feel sorry for the cats because they just get too many. Not enough homes for the cats. The adoption price is great too. It comes with microchip, spay/neuter, etc. It's a great deal. I recommend adopting from Winnebago County Animal Services!

    by: Baileyboo

We got our Black lab, Dalmation Mix from Animal Services in June 2005. The Staff was very helpful, The environment is kept clean. (Which I know from being a pet owner takes time.) The animals were happy and well cared for. The staff and volunteers seemed to really care about not just adopting the animal out but, for the animals wellbeing too. They promote the spaying and neutering of pets non-stop. They are also willing to help you find resources you need for taking care of your pet. Because sometimes to be the best possible pet owner you can, the answer you have been looking for. May not have been one that you could have found without help.

    Pros

    Dogs are temperment tested.

    Cons

Only can be held for an hour.

  • 12. Clean and friendly

  • 14. Great Place to get a Pet

    by: ztT4MP39735460

I adopted a dog from the shelter. He has been the best dog I've ever had. \n\nIf you go to the shelter ask someone to assist you. They can help you find the pet that is right for your life style. That will ensure that both you and your new pet are happy together.\n\nThe shelter provides a lot of useful information. Be sure to take advantage of it.\n\n\n\n

  • 15. Pets First!

    by: booster

To be perfectly honest, I have personally been inside the Winnebago County Animal Services, however, I have several Friends that have adopted Pets from there and have asked questions of them. One Friend was at first a little "put out" that the staff screened her so well, but soon realized that it was 100% for the animals protection. She then had nothing but praise for the Shelter! Another Friend was also pleased with the Shelter's service, and has found a best friend in her pup! Keep up the great work you do!

    Pros

The staff really cares about the animals!

    Cons

I've have never heard any negatives!

  • 17. Disapointing

    by: ztT4MP66352337

I had brought in 2 stray kittens about 1 yr. old. They were considered wild, but not with me. I had worked with them and I thought they were tame enough to be brought in to find a home. I called to check on them and was informed they were put to sleep after just being in the shelter 1 day. No one gave me any information of options , just asked one question, are they wild? If they thought they were too wild to adopt, I would have taken them back home with me. I would have never brought them there if I knew they would put them to sleep.

    Pros

    Very nice facility people

    Cons

    Wasen't informed of options

  • 21. WCAS

    by: ladydianna1951

WCAS is by far one of the cleaniest Animal Control facilities in the region. They have a staff of dedicated caring individuals who work extremely hard to give the animals all that can be giving in a shelter environment. Their Auxiliary is one of a kind, lead by some very warm, caring and again dedicated people. They try to provide what the staff can't to the animals and work with visitors/potential adopters to find the right pet for them and educate at the same time. I can't say enough about the staff and they need to recognized far more than they are.\r\n\r\nKeep up the great work everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Pros

    Warm Caring Staff

    Cons

    You Know I can't Say!

  • 22. Good shelter

    Cons

  • 25. Best shelter in the area

    by: janowin

Winnebago County Animals Services is a great place. The shelter is clean. The volunteers really help make it inviting and they help the animals a lot. The price of adoption is reasonable and for all that you get with each animal: rabies tag, microchip, spay/neuter, etc., it's really a great deal for the price. You would pay more if you got a free dog/cat and then had to go to the vet and do all that stuff. \r\n\r\nThe shelter has enough space for housing the animals but is lacking space for other things, such as a separate room that the kennel staff can do temperment testing. Right now it's done in the exam room and there is too much traffic in there.\r\n\r\nThe addition of the spay/neuter clinic is great and I think that it's wonderful that now all the animals are getting spayed/neutered before getting adopted. That was really important but more improvements need to be made to make this an even better place.

    Pros

the volunteers are great, helpful & smart, the place is clean, the adoption price is reasonable

    Cons

not enough space for things other than housing animals: could use a separate room for temperment testing
