  • 4. Awesome Place

    by: rachelreed1212

I take my cat here for the vet service, it is reasonable priced and the people are so nice. My brother adopted his dog from here (Mollie) She is doing great and they are so happy. The shelter helps you to find a new family member whether it be a dog, a cat, or a rabbit. They keep the animals cages very clean and as comfortable as possible for them, they also take time to play with the animals or talk to them so that they stay friendly.

    Pros

They take good care of the animals

    Cons

I wish I could take them all home

  • 6. Thank Goodness For the Humane Society

    by: jimem

if it weren't for humane societies, we'd have homeless pets wandering the streets like in mexico. they work so hard to find loving, forever homes. and they rely on the compassion of the people to help them stay afloat. we can never do enough to help the humane society! they have a vet clinic and obedience school, too. many people don't know that you can adopt rabbits and guinea pigs here as well.

    Pros

    save homeless animals

    Cons

    none

  • 7. Loving & Caring Staff w/ the greatest adoptable pets in Pennsylvania!

    by: FoxyRoxyRaceBabe

I was representing DAD's petcare food at the Pittsburgh Home & Garden show and was able to visit the staff/volunteers and the adoptable animals since they were adjacent to our booth. I also took time to visit there facility - which in my opinion is fabulous! One of my bosses fell in love with Selena, a tan, female, collie mix. I fell for Mickey, male, black, pitbull. He was such a gentle soul. I know he will make someone a great pet. All of those little and big babies I met those days will. Willow is another one that stole my heart. Lucky, the 9 year old Newfoundland mix made me miss my own dog Becky Boo Boo so much more. They have such great animals at this place and so many great programs that I'm happy to see them in the top 50 in the make-over contest. I bought the $5 dollar t-shirt that says "I'm a proud owner of a rescued dog" I wear it proudly. :) I will upload several of the photos I took at the show. It was my pleasure meeting you kind folks and sweet adoptable animals. Visiting your facility was a treat as well. Keep up the good work guys!

  • 9. Foster Parenting

    by: ceeteecee

I am currently a volunteer foster parent for this organization and must say that the experience has been wonderful. Having fostered for another Humane Society in the past, I am able to compare the two. WPHS is so very organized, helpful and available to a foster parent. I plan on being a foster parent for WPHS for as long as they need me.

    Pros

Very attentive to all animals and very attentive staff and volunteers.

    Cons

I really do not have a con.

My sister-in law had to take her dog here after her and my brother moved out of there house into a smaller home and they couldn't keep her with three children, there was just no room. The staff here were friendly and understanding and allowed my neices to stay with their dog for awhile and they came to visit when they could. They gave her updates on the dog when she called and eventually she was adopted to another family. Thanks guys

    by: Mandi13

I am a vet tech that has worked at the Humane Society for over a year now and I love it. The Humane society is a caring and compassionate place for all animals, none get turned away. The staff is very compassionate and caring towards every animal that walks through our doors. The staff is very knowledgeable, the facility is very clean, and the services available are excellent. I have seen many animals come through, I have gotten attached, and have been so happy when they get adopted. I have fostered many, many animals, and have been there to see each one get placed in a great home. I cannot say enough good things about where I work...The people at the humane society genuinely care about the animals. We get attached and love them like our own. We try to do right by every animal and turn none away. The Western PA Humane Society is a great facility, and I am very proud to say that I work there.

    Pros

    Compassionate, caring place for animals

    Cons

    Nothing

  • 16. A Great Shelter

    by: annemam

My husband and I adopted both of our cats from this Western PA Humane Society. We love the cats, which is easy, but it was also a great time at the shelter. The staff were very helpful at getting the right cat for us. They gave us some free toys and made us want to come back. When we decided to get a second cat, they help us with what to do to make sure that the two would get along and have a smooth transition. The clinic is also great, the vet was very nice and knowledgeable, and it was tons cheaper than a normal vet visit. We are thinking about getting a dog in the near future and we will definitely go to the Western PA Humane Society to adopt!

    Pros

very nice staff, always willing to help, caring people, great clinic and vets

    Cons

I can only adopt so many!

    by: floggingdori

The Western PA Humane Society is a well-organized, clean shelter. They take adoptions very seriously and ask many questions to ensure the animal will receive a loving home. I have adopted hamsters from this shelter who are very friendly and tame. An excellent shelter for all animals, big and small!

    Pros

Animals are easy to access, staff are enthusiastic

    Cons

Sometimes hard to get a staff person to assist, they're busy!

I adopted Danielle, Tortie, 12 years ago, Chelsea, Border Collie mix, 7 years ago, and Crystal, Australian Shepherd, 1 year ago. We have a full house with Another Aussie, Candy, 4, who was born deaf and a lovely brown Tabby, Jordan, who is 10, adopted from another shelter.\n\nHaving the photos with a short bio online is very helpful when searching for a new pet. One of Pghs. oldest institutions. Improved, moved to a newer facility several years ago. Open door shelter where no pets are turned away, which makes it next to impossible to become no kill. Hard working staff and volunteers, including foster homes to take overflow and sick animals.

    Cons

    not no-kill (yet)

  • 32. Very Loving,caring and gentle!

    Cons

Hard to get a person on the phone sometimes

  • 33. More Of Just A Business

    by: brunosmom

I have been to the Western PA Humane Society on serveral times and come away with the feelings that the animals there are merely a means of getting money. The dogs are priced higher for the pure breds and younger more sought after dogs are always high priced! Shelter dogs costing $250 and up ???? I understand that this money helps with those animals that don't get adopted but shouldn't finding a good loving home be more important than the quality and price of the animal adopted. Also one staff member in particular made me feel uncomfortable about the dog I was looking to adopt that he would be a high quality animal that I wouldn't have a chance to get him. Phone lines are always busy and usually get a recorded message...on the flip side their behavior and dog obedience training staff are top notch.

    Pros

    Has a clinic

    Cons

    more of just a business

  • 34. Great shelter for animals and volunteers

    by: mjhalf

The Western Pennsylvania Humane Society is a great shelter for animals and volunteers. With flexible hours for volunteers, you can set your own schedule. The staff is great - friendly and knowledgeable - and the volunteers are all outgoing and really invested in the animals. And of course, the animals themselves are all lovable, making it easy to make time to volunteer!

    Pros

Great atmosphere, open doors, low kill

    Cons

Parking lot is not big enough during busy times

  • 35. Thank you for all your hard work!

    Pros

    Cons

    needs a good makeover

  • 36. Big City Shelter

    by: CarolMajernik

This is a well built big city shelter in Pittsburgh on the North Shore. Our board visited here about five years ago . The staff is friendly and helpful. They stated to us that they euthanize half of the animals that are surrendered to them. There just are not enough homes for the thousands of animals presented to them each year. It is hard to find puppies and small dogs here. They are always full of pit bulls and other large dogs. To the person that stated they need to build on : maybe they should ask Teresa Heinz for more of her millions.

    Pros

They have to accept any animal presented to them.

    Cons

They do KILL lots of animals.

  • 37. Great Facility

    by: bacbaj08

I researched many different shelters for Obedience Training and the WPHS came highly recommended. We have used the personal training program along with participating in class with other dogs. The trainers are excellent and very knowledgeable. They take the time to really get to know you along with your pet.\r\n

    Pros

    Wonderful Staff

    Cons

  • 38. Comments from a volunteeer

    by: vongeis022

I started volunteering here in May '07, and find the staff to be friendly and knowledgeable about the "residents" and their personalities. They truly are committed to matching the right pet with the right home. Also, they are an open-door shelter, which is wonderful--they never turn animals away, and they take more than just cats & dogs...They even have a resident alligator behind the scenes that someone once dropped off! Though shelters can be sad & depressing, WPHS is not--they are constantly planning fun events, both on-site and off-site, and the animals are well-cared for while they wait for their "forever home".

    Pros

Friendly, committed to finding great homes

    Cons

  • 39. Dedication

I am writing in honor and behalf of my Grandmother who owned pets from the WPHS for over 50 years and up until she died 9 months ago. The pets she found here kept her company and were her closest companions. She loved them as much as she loved her family. I want to thank the Humane Society for providing her with the pets who filled her life with happiness.

    Pros

    Great pets there

  • 40. Human society doing their jobs well

    by: rmanz09

This shelter is really working hard to do alot with limited resources. The dogs are all taken care of, walked and clean. The facility is clean, and offers medical care for pets at an affordable price. I love that the staff that helped us actually seemed to be attached to the animals we were looking at. I feel like this organization really loves what they do. Anyone looking for a pet would be lucky to find one here.

    by: kmw723

Western PA shelter is a very big disapointment to me for the fact that it receives government funding for the animals yet still eunthenizes much of them. While only a few miles away, Washington Area Humane Society lost it's government funding and still remains a no kill shelter. I think that is is important to know that there is a family out there for EVERY pet!

    Pros

    receives gov't funding

    Cons

    kill shelter

  • 48. Hearts of Gold

    by: lifeandblessings

The stress that the customer service support group has to endure during pet surrenders is something that many of us take for granted. Typically these folks are paid very little for the heart aches they endure in their daily jobs. I view the staff at this facility as pet angels giving hope, love and life to as many pets as they possibly can. I encourage all of us who volunteer at all shelters to always have a kind word for shelter staff members. I have seen quite a few experience burn out and leave. This is a tough job and many if not all do it because of the size of their heart and not for the money. The shelter also has a core group of volunteers that are nothing short of the most loving people I have ever met. I also want to make a comment about no kill shelters. This shelter is an open door shelter which means it takes in all pets. Every effort is made to find a home for pets. The shelter has a community of foster volunteers who adopt pets for as long as needed until they are ready to be adopted. Unfortunately there are euthanizations that are made. Any shelter that claims to be a no kill shelter is lieing to us. When they get full they give maps to people of where an open door shelter is. The result is that an open door shelter is sometimes the last hope that a pet that needs a home has. People will donate money to no kill shelters because it makes them feel better when in reality the open door shelters deserve the funding. Open door shelters always end up with all the pets the no kill shelters can't take. \r\n\r\nIt is what it is

    Pros

    Staff and fantastic volunteers

    Cons

    Need more volunteers

  • 49. Adoption

    by: amsbruno

We adopted our puppy from here and the staff was great! Adoption included a puppy class that our family had a fun time attending. I would recommend adopting from this shelter.

    Pros

Always someone looking for a home!

    Cons

Don't know much about where puppy came from

  • 50. EXCELLENT

    by: swelmelz

I have a small dog that is a real handful to deal with.\r\nShe is actually a maniac - especially at the vets.\r\nHowever, I am EXTREMELY satisfied with the way they take care of my dog as well as my concerns. The staff is WONDERFUL. I have witnessed a few rude irate pet owners walk in & expect/demand treatment for their ailing pets when have not made an appointment. They walk out screaming & swearing & the staff calmly explain that if it is an emergency they need to go to a vet hospital & are willing to look up the names & closest locations. I will continue take my dog & any future pet to them. Kudos for a great job.

    Pros

    flexible hours even weekends

    Cons

they don't have an xray machine

  • 53. Top Knotch Shelter.

    by: Precious756

Was recommended to this shelter by a friend. I an so thankful to her this. My eyes were opened to a shelter that has a staff that is caring, loving, and most knowledgeable about the animals they care for. The shelter did not smell at all like a shelter. There were positive vibes throughout the shelter and the animals looked content. While I was there, there were several volunteers taking the dogs out for walks and runs. I was impressed also to see that when I joined this site, that they only have a few hundred supporters, unlike some of these other shelters that have thousands of supporters. But hey even thou they are small they have great backing behind them. So I take my hat off to this shelter. Keep up the good efforts Western PA humane society. congrats.!!! and good luck.

    Pros

Caring,Clean,Healthy Animals. Knowledgeable staff, Wonderful volunteers

    Cons

    Positively nothing.

  • 54. A dedicated local shelter

    by: lips377

The Washington Humane Society is doing a great job with what they have. They have great volunteers and staff that really care. They have a clean facility and a variety of pets to adopt. If they had more funds they would be able to expand the shelter and possibly make it a "no kill" shelter. This is a great place to find your next friend/pet.

    Pros

    Knowledgeable, caring staff

    Cons

    Not a "no kill" shelter

  • 55. Many to pick from

    by: jeansexauer

I am really big on NO KILL and Western is not but I understand they only put down when they absolutely have to not just because of space issues; I hope this is true. They helped my sister when her cat was lost and turned in to their shelter; they were very helpful and considerate.

    Pros

    Nice clean shelter

    Cons

they are not a no kill

  • 58. Good shelter; seems understaffed like most

    by: jumperoo

I did some fostering for this shelter and found them to be nice and welcoming, like most shelters are. They are clearly understaffed/overworked, but I don't think that's unusual. They are a valuable resource to the community. A great place to go find a new furry friend.

    Pros

Nice; able to take animals when needed

    Cons

    Overfilled, like most shelters

  • 59. What a great place

We get our cat there - and she is a sweetie!!!! The shelter was great - the people were very nice and easy to work with. We had a tour of the facility and were very impressed with the cleanliness. Just feel bad for all the animals but a nice safe place for them to be while waiting to be adopted.

    Pros

What a great place to go and find a pet

    Cons

Its in the city - don't like the traffic

  • 60. A-1

    by: kacky

wonderfull in the city shelter that is very busy all the time. They run a very well organized shelter with very caring employees and volunteers. I found a litter of kittens i had to take care of for a couple of weeks cause mom got hit by a car. became very attached to them but couldn't find homes for all. Took to society and saw the great kitty room. I felt alot better about leaving them there. They all got adopted.

    Pros

    never turn away a animal

    Cons

    not a no kill

  • 61. The building is one of the best I have seen

    by: shu614

I was very impressed with the building layout and its wonderful that so many people volunteer there and love to do it! Keep up the good work!

    Pros

The building architecture is very people friendly.

    Cons

The dog area needs to have better walls to decrease noise level.

  • 62. Wonderful shelter with a low-cost clinic.

    by: gimpyo

I adopted my first cat from here. The staff was happy to help me in the choosing and gave me plenty of time in the play room to get to know each animal. The building itself is fairly new and updated, and you can tell the volunteers really value it. However, the vet clinic is very small (one room near the waiting area) and the vets seemed overwhelmed some days. The last time I took my cat there, the exam room was very messy and there was pet hair everywhere. I think this is due to lack of room, however, during busy hours. The first time I went there, I was one of four people waiting for care-the room then was spotless and the vet was very relaxed and observant. I think they just need more space for their low-cost clinic.

    Pros

Updated facilities, friendly staff, quick adoption process

    Cons

    Vet clinic needs work

  • 65. Wonderful shelter

    by: nurse4u92

The Western Pennsylvania Humane society is the best. They try very hard to find all of the animals homes, and try not euthanize. They offer assistance to low income people to help spay and neuter their pets.(They helped my mother arrange something)They offer low cost vaccination clinics twice a year.Staff is knowlegable and friendly.

    Pros

    by: xaguamelonx

When I was looking for another cat to add to my family, I began my search here. The staff was knowledgeable and very helpful in helping me pick my little one, Ava. Even when she got very sick right after we got her, they were very willing to help us get her better, and offered any support they could. They have been great to us and both of our cats, and I'm glad we decided to visit them.

  • 70. They truly LOVE thier animals!!

    by: ldiana68

I adopted the best dog ever here several years ago.He was an adult rott/shar pei mix. My boys fell in love and we have all lived happily ever after since! :) \r\nPlease remember not to overlook adults while you are there.(most people gravitate towards puppies/kittens) Let me tell you from experience, my adult adoptee is the sweetest most lovable dog around, and he was past the chewing stage........and completely housebroken too!!\r\nalso...the staff and volunteers there truly love the animals. They are walked/cuddled everyday. They announce over a loud speaker whenever a pet is adopted, and the workers are so happy to see a pet go home!! They work Extremely hard to get each animal a great home. They are devoted to the animals, and it is nice to know that while an animal awaits for a home, it can be in a place where it is loved and cared for.

    Pros

    the animals are loved

    Cons

    not no kill

  • 71. Fantastic

    by: Panicked

We adopted a chihuahua mix in April 07. They were wonderful about getting us acquainted, letting us know her history, and tips on the breed. In Sept 07, we adopted another chihuahua from them. They let our old dog play with the new addition for a good while and let us get acquainted as well. They paperwork was easy, the fees are low, and they give lots of coupons. Also, if you take the adoption paperwork to Petco, you get a coupon book worth over $100. Very nice, caring staff.

    Pros

good hours, caring staff, low fees

    Cons

    none

  • 72. Good Option

    by: MsCynic

It's a wonderful shelter because it never turns anyone away, however, that also means it occasionally is at full compacity. They never euthanize a puppy, accidental litters are welcomed with open arms, and the volunteers attempt to socialize the animals as much as possible.\r\n\r\n They have a good relationship with the community and offer a variety of services from adoption, to clinic services, and through a variety of training options. They have some amazing trainers on staff with a diverse background of styles. Everything available from clicker training, to the more traditional styles. Some of the trainers actively compete in dog shows in obedience, Rally, & Agility. \r\n\r\nTheir volunteer set up is amazing. The coordinator takes her time to try and use everyone's strengths, and allow them to devote as much or as little time as they'd like.

    Pros

    Open door shelter

    Cons

    by: makenna

i worked at a minimal kill shelter out in the state of washington for 3 years and it was very hard. we took care of the animal and did our best . ive been the shelter manager for our current humane society for 10 years and the best feeling just happen, a hard to place dog named sonny boy was finally adopted after 6 years of living at our shelter since he was 6 mos old. some nice person rescued him from an abusive home, we run our dogs 8 times daily they have beds, blankets, rawhides, treats. everybody has a running mate and kept socialized. i would never go back to a minimal kill shelter l love my job. but i am glad there is caring staff and volunteers at your shelter to take care of the unwanted animal, and if it was a perfect world every dog would have a perfect home

    Pros

sounds like caring staff and volunteers

    Cons

    minimal kill shelter

  • 74. Truly caring for the animals

    by: nwelman

The staff and volunteers genuinely care for the animals at the Washington Area Humane Society. They go out of their way to try and find the perfect homes for their animals. After adopting our Tinkerbell there, they followed up with phone calls to check up on her and make sure she was adapting to her new surroundings (which she did). I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a lovable pet.

    Pros

knowledgeable staff as well as knowledgeable volunteers.

    Cons

    by: sherman

The Humane Society is a great place to find a pet. They have animals of every variety. We have fostered many kittens for the shelter and all of them have been adopted. by: Rcourtad

The WPHS does everything it can to find homes for their animals. They get a large amount of the bully breeds and do whatever they can to find their forever homes. The Volunteers at this shelter treat the animals as if they are their own and do all they can to find homes for these wonderful potential pets!

    Pros

The volunteers are the heart of the shelter!

  • 78. friendly upbeat shelter

    by: LaurenS

i really admire this shelter for their friendly upbeat and helpful staff and volunteers. They make this shelter a brighter place. Overall, this is one of the "nicest" shelters in the area, mainly due to the people there. They are very active in the public. Not as depressing as Animal Rescue League, for example. • 81. Whisker Lickins cat treats by purina

    by: Kittycatsrock333

Whisker Lickens cat treats by Purina are great for cats. It is 23.0% protein 1.0% fiber and 34.0% moisture to keep the treats fresh. I feed one to my cat every nite and she goes crazy for them. Cats can get very addicted to them. When you shake the bag you will find that your cat will come running for a treat and will meow untill you give him/her another one. Some cats should not eat the cat treat because there on a diet or they just can't have cat treats. When I called the Purina hot line they where very helpful and noligable. Although at first you had to listen to a machine to direct you other than that the service was great. The cat treats are also cheap but at the same time they are good for your cat or kitten. If you want to satisfiy your cat then you want to give it a Purina Whisker Licken.

    Pros

The treats are not messy one bit. My cat loves them.

    Cons

The more you feed your cat the more likely they will make a hairball.

  • 83. Great Shelter

    by: hbomba

This shelter really knows it's stuff about animals: not to mention that they open their hearts and doors to thousands of animals each year when other shelters turn these homeless pets down. The shelter is warm and cozy, the staff are helpful and loving to their animals, and customer service is A+! Overall, a great shelter to adopt from.

    Pros

  • 86. A Shelter That Cares

    by: MaryJoT

I have volunteered here for nearly 2 years and am constantly impressed by the dedication of the staff and volunteers. They genuinely care about the animals and going "above and beyond" seems to be the norm there not the exception. Keep up the good work guys!!

    Pros

    Very caring

    Cons

    Is not a no kill

  • 87. They Really Reach Out to the Community with Events

    by: whbos

WPHS at least gives their animals a chance for finding new homes. The foster care individuals are great because they help with the overcrowding in the shelter. I wish I could help with that, but I live in an apartment. I would take them all home.\n\nI've never seen such hard-working staff, volunteers, and others who really make this shelter shine. In comparison to other shelters I've been to in Pittsburgh, Virginia, DC, Florida, and Texas, this is the friendliest one and the staff are eager to help. They also have more animal activities than anyone could imagine.\n\nWPHS takes in all animals even ones left on the sidewalk when the shelter is closed.

    Pros

Helpful Staff; Care for well being of all Animals

    Cons

Shelter needs a bigger parking lot

  • 88. Who says shelters are depressing?

    by: rachelmac000

I decided to start volunteering at WPHS during the summer because I go to CCAC and had extra time between classes and such. Aside from killing time, I joined because I love animals and knew it'd be fulfililng - but I had no idea how fulfilling it actually was! Everybody.. i mean EVERYBODY is exceptionally kind and considerate there, and the animals are as well! They make every accomodation possible to make the animals safe, happy, and in good health. There is not one bad thing I could possibly say about this shelter.. everyone is there for the same, selfless purpose, and by working together they make more and more progress every day. Mad props to everyone affiliated with WPHS ^_^

    Pros

Great staff, volunteers, and great animal accomodations

    Cons

It's so far away from home..?

  • 92. No Shelter is Perfect...

    by: RichStoops

Overall this is a great shelter. It tries very hard to be low kill, no animal is ever turned away, most staff and volunteers care about nothing more than the welfare and wellbeing of the animals that pass through the doors. I have seen dogs and cats here that are older and have been up for adoption for months, and I think that is fantastic. This Humane Society really does try to give its animals every opportunity at the good life as a loved family member that they all deserve. Keep up the awesome work!

    Pros

They try very hard to be low-kill, it is an open-door shelter

    Cons

A few snippy staff members can make a negative impression
