  • 2. A vital refuge for animals

    by: MaryRB

This is the only animal shelter in our county and provides as vital service, partly because some people around here treat dogs and cats like disposable farm stock. We try to donate resale items regularly to help support the shelter.

    Pros

Attached thrift store helps support their services

    Cons

    None

  • 3. Local animal shelter

    by: Sherry66

    Pros

    minimal cost to adopt

    Cons

dogs are kept at secondary localtion

  • 4. They Couldn't Try Any Harder

    by: jeanneandryan

This place tries so hard to care for so many animals in such little space. They need pet food and kittly litter. They need volunteers and donations to help improve the building. Everyone there works their buns off. The animals are given love and attention by the staff. No place cares more and does so much with so little.

    Pros

They are doing everything they can

    Cons

Buildings too small and too little in donations coming in

  • 5. great no-kill shelter & people with huge hearts!

    by: billie05

The West Plains shelter is the best shelter I've ever seen. The family who opened it over a decade ago has dedicated their lives to the animals they care for. The open rooms the cats live in are as near to being a home environment as possible. The only ones in cages are the ill, nursing & new arrivals; the others live in rooms without cages, it's so neat. Each time I visited, contemplating which dog would be most suitable for me, they were very helpful & patient because they want to be sure each animal goes home with the right person/s. This area would be in a terrible bind without this shelter & the family who runs it. The greatest need I see is the need for more room. They stay open by donations & volunteers only, more space costs money they don't have. The shelter's needs have outgrown the space they have to accommodate all the desperate needy animals in this area, but they make the best use of what they have. To them the animals come first & I knew that the first time I met these wonderful people.

    Pros

clean, very caring staff, no-kill, & so much more.......

    Cons

NO cons about the shelter, but they do need money for more space

  • 7. It is a good shelter

    by: mommadee1982

I went to the West Plains Regional Animal Shelter today and they were very kind to me and told me all that I needed to know about the puppies that they had there. The animals seemed to be in good spirits and didnt seem to be lacking anything except for a little room. The building they are in is making it hard for the animals and the people who take care of them to get around. Other than that their was nothing wrong with the way that the animal shelter is run.

    Pros

    Friendly enviroment, Healthy animals.

    Cons

    Kinda crampt.

    by: Martinslovedogs

Every animal in the shelter is very well taken care of. They are wormed, shots, frontlined, named and they're sleeping areas are cleaned regularly. I was very impressed.

  • 14. Good people

    by: rpfeffer

My Husband was able to do some work for these people and had nothing but nice things to say about them and their facility. I would like to see more community members take notice of lost, stray, or animals left behind. It is not the animal at fault it is the people who do not look after them properly.

    Pros

They Help when others won't are cannot.

    Cons

Don't know of any... need more support from community

  • 19. Great Match!

    by: avonallmen

We looked at this shelter for a dog to adopt. We were sort of iffy about the ones we saw. Trish mentioned a boxer that had come into a different shelter in another town. She called the shelter and they brought the dog for us to see. We took an immediate liking to her. She is a boxer and her name is Lady. She is perfect for our family! We are currently looking for another boxer to adopt, and Trish is on the look out for us.

    Pros

    Friendly staff

    Cons

  • 22. WP Animal Shelter rates at the top of my list!

    by: fancyfree

This was my first visit to the shelter. The little thrift store is neat. The people were very friendly and nice. They genuinely care about the animals there. You can tell that instantly. The shelter is the cleanest one I have ever seen! My original phone call, I was not told about all the small dogs that they had for adoption. I was looking for a small dog. I did adopt and am very happy with my choice! But, I didn't even know that he was there, until I went to look at a different dog that they did tell me about on the telephone! I was also mis-informed about the spay/neuter program charges on the telephone. Trish, you need to instruct your sweet daughter not to give information, but to put you or someone else on the phone, or at least, make sure that she knows the legistics. She is a very sweet girl, as you all were very nice! Thank you for my new baby! He is precious! I couldn't be happier!

    Pros

Very Clean Animals, and shelter! Very nice people!

    Cons

I was given some misinformation by telephone.

  • 23. Good place

    by: coffeltkim

I love this shelter they care so much about there animals. I really think they need a new place though they really dont have enough space for all the things they do and all the animals they get in and out of there.

    Pros

    I love the people here

    Cons

They really need a bigger area

  • 24. Passion, Compassion & Dedication

    by: BandittVonStewart

Owners Dennis & Trish (and Brianna) are the most dedicated people to their passion that I have ever met. They love the animals enough to have created the shelter and maintain it and the animals with an endless enthusiasm that is rarely seen. \r\n\r\nThe shelter is 100% volunteer operated with a no kill policy trying to serve many counties. They do a tremendous job with what they have available.\r\n\r\nThe volunteers are wonderful...they love the animals and make every effort to make sure they go to the right home/family! You can visit and take all the time you want to pick out just the right pet for your family.\r\n\r\nThe preadopted pets are healthy and spay/neutered before they are adopted out.\r\n\r\nThe Thrift Shop is clean, orderly and well stocked with donated items...as much as the confined space allows.\r\n\r\nIf you are ever in the area please stop and visit.

    Pros

Healthy animals, Clean environment, Knowledgable owners/volunteers

    Cons

    Not enough room!

  • 25. THANK GOD FOR ANIMAL SHELTERS

    by: weez

I think the people at West Plains Animal Shelter are wonderful folks! Not all truly care about the helpless animals like they do. Wouldn't it be a great world if they did. They truly deserve a better facility and so do our less fortunate animals.

    Pros

Clean, caring staff, great animals, thift store to add $

    Cons

    lack of space

  • 31. Wonderful shelter-needs our support!

    by: ztT4MP12269141_DEAD

This shelter truly deserves the distinction of being one of the winners of this competition! I have seen it grow from a tiny building on St Louis Street to the nice, big current building, but it needs a lot of work and a lot of support. Twice I have stopped by looking for a cat for a friend who wanted something very particular, and they didn't have quite the cat for her, but it took all my will power not to adopt another couple of them for myself! The shelter is clean and well-cared for, the animals are content and healthy, and the staff is wonderful!

    Pros

Clean, well-cared for animals, clear separation of ill cats and dogs from healthy ones, knowledgeable, kind staff

    Cons

    none come to mind...

  • 32. Rural area

    by: ztT4MP44949805

Rural areas have predispositions with some 'rural' ways. One of those is to throw away the pets that were once wanted but now aren't. This could be a pet that's gotten too old, an unwanted batch of pups/kittens etc. They end up on the street or wandering in the country. Luckily there are people who care for animals so that their lives are not guided by hunger and possible death. Any no-kill shelter is an asset to a community providing an alternative for animals roaming the streets. Please consider West Plains due to its very rural service area. Thank you!

    Pros

Just the availability of a shelter in our area

    Cons

    Too small

  • 33. Small town shelter needs our help

    by: ztT4MP64593167

This is a great shelter and they sure could use some of the publics help with maintaining the shelter and making repairs and expansion to help the small community of West Plains with the only shelter we have here.

    Pros

    Only shelter in town

    Cons

    Need better facility

  • 34. Deserve to Win

    by: dachef

Everyone is so deserving of being rewarded for all of their hard work for the animals in the West Plains area.\r\nThank you all for what you do for the animals!

    Pros

You deserve to be reward for all of your efforts.

    Cons

    shelter needs to be updated

  • 35. A Wonderful No-Kill Shelter

    by: maggiethecat

The WPRAS is a haven for the cats & dogs who end up there, unwanted through no fault of their own. The staff is absolutely wonderful! Very dedicated & loving. The healthy cats & dogs are not in cages, but have nice play-rooms, as the staff has made their atmosphere as natural as possible. Only the new-arrivals & those with possible contageous illnesses are temporarily quarantened & well cared for until they can join the others. The shelter is very very clean. They are doing their best to change the attitude that far too many have, "animals are disposable?" prevelant here in the Ozarks. They refuse to "play God" by choosing to put any animal down. They get by on a shoe-string budget & also desperately need more room so they can save more & continue to place the furbabies in forever loving homes. \r\nI give them a 10 for effort, dedication, & perserverance!

    Pros

    Very clean, compassionate staff

    Cons

No complaints!!! But they can always use more assistance

  • 36. They Really Care!!!

    by: restrobug

The people involved are very caring and are dedicated to the protection and health of all animals. My grandson says it best when he says "We love animals"! But unfortunately not every animal is treated with the love and care they deserve so shelters like this are needed to fill in where others fall short. Other shelters may also deserve to win but ours is the only one in this area and could do so much more if they just had the funding.

    Pros

    Dedicated to thier cause

    Cons

    Lack of volunteres and funding

  • 37. Caring people!

    by: JoyGrisham

I have known them for a long time. They are soft hearted towards animals. Not to tolerant with people who abuse and neglect animals. Join in with me and make this shelter a better place for the abandoned dogs and cats.

    Pros

rescue animals, do not put down the crippled

    Cons

want and need a bigger building

  • 38. Hard workers deserve to win!

    by: pebblesmom

This is a great shelter! They have helped my family several times with animals and given good advice on caring for some of our animals who have special needs. They are a super bunch of people and have worked hard for years to get to where they are today. When this contest is over, and I hope they win, please continue to support this shelter.

    Pros

Great volunteer and staff, lots of sweet animals, clean, love animals

    Cons

    need space and update

  • 39. Heard good things about this shelter!!

    by: TinaDoozer

I have heard a lot of good things about this shelter. They are needed in that area. I hope they can win this contest! The people in this town should help them by encouraging them and volunteering.

  • 40. Great volunteers and caring people run this shelter

  • 43. They are Great

    by: Sammy00

I just love this shelter. They really deserve to win. They do what ever it takes to help out. The are devoted and dedicated to serving the community and all the animals that are brought to them. The building they have now is just not big enough for the growing demands. I know that they will be greatfull for all that help now and in the future. The animals are well taken care of and they( the animals) deserve to have a facility that can house all there needs so that they may be adopted.

    Pros

    Very needed, clean, friendly

    Cons

    Needs more funding

  • 44. What a Great Shelter

    by: WeepingWillow

I am very pleased with the facility for all that they do and are tring to keep doing. This area needs this shelter for all the abandoned animals. They are very devoted to the well being of all pets that come thru there door. I only wish there was more shelters that was a dedicated as they are. I wish them nothing more than the best and I do hope that they win this so that they will be here for years to come.

    Pros

    Very Clean and Friendly

    Cons

Not enough funding to help more

  • 45. West Plains R A S

The people here really need the help to makeover thier shelter. I'm doing all I can to help.

    Pros

    Very helpful people

    Cons

    needs more room

  • 47. They deserve this makeover!!!!!!

    by: corrupted1z

This shelter deserves a makeover. It takes a lot of dedication and a loving heart to do what these people do. This shelter works hard to take care of these animals, and in my opinion does not get enough support. I am truly hoping they get this makeover. They truly do deserve it!!

    Pros

Animals are well cared for, friendly staff, kept clean

    Cons

    Needs to be bigger

  • 48. They do a good job

    by: toothpick

This is a great shelter that needs a makeover. Let's help them do it.

    Pros

they take good care of the animals

    Cons

    they need more money

  • 49. rural refuge

    by: deja

The West Plains Regional Animal Shelter continues to provide food, water, shelter, and loving care to abandoned and unwanted animals from the area. As a monthly food donor to the shelter, I can attest to the selfless dedication of the shelter's staff. Cleaning is always in progress when I make my usual after school donation to the shelter. The food bowls are always full, and water bowls are always filled with fresh water. The neverending job of litter box sifting and cleaning is also conscientiously maintained. To me, the most outstanding attribute of the shelter is its compassionate staff. These people truly care for animals that others in our small community regard as nothing more than "target practice." During this past year alone, Trish Hammen and her staff have assisted me with the rescue and placement of 6 young cats and kittens from my neighborhood. The West Plains Regional Animal Shelter remains an invaluable service for our community!

    Pros

    compassionate, conscientious staff

    Cons

    cramped facilities

  • 50. A good caring shelter!

    by: JordanA

I would hope that the community will offer more of a support to this shelter. If they do not win this contest, it won't be from lack of trying. Good luck in the future!

    Pros

    caring people, hard working, relentless

    Cons

need a bigger place to house dogs inside,

  • 51. This place runs on love!

    by: 19cats

What can I say about this shelter? It literally runs on love. Trish and Dennis Hammen and their daughter are the driving force behind WPRAS. They give it their all and then some. Oh, there will always be those who criticize, but I don't see them literally putting their money and their time where their mouths are! This shelter absolutely deserved to win a makeover! Imagine how many little lives can be saved with more room and up-to-date facilities! If love alone could make it happen, it would be in the bag!!

    Pros

It fills a very large need

    Cons

    More help needed

  • 52. Lets help win this for the Animal Shelter!

    by: BirddogJ

I have been to this shelter when it was on St. Louis street and where it is now. Yes, it is a shelter in name and in reality. This shelter is doing a job that is needed in this area. So why would anyone not want it to succeed? If you truely want this underfunded animal shelter to stay open you need to get on the computer and help earn points, instead of conplaining about lack of recognition for someone else! Because the only way they will ever get a nice shelter is to win this!

    Pros

spay and neuter, help sick and abandoned animals

    Cons

need bigger building, need community support

  • 53. they really care

    by: dalmatian147

they have very dedicated volunteers, but I know they need more help. They could really benefit from the visibility within the community that winning this contest would provide

    Pros

    they're really trying

    Cons

since the thrift store is in the same building as the shelter sometimes it doesn't smell the best (but that's why they need a new facility!)

  • 54. they need the help

    by: wildlifelover

this shelter has such a limited volunteer base that they need the visibility in the community that winning this contest would provide

    Pros

    they are trying really hard

    Cons

thrift store is in the same building as the shelter and doesn't always smell so great.

    by: motordr

These are nice people who do a great job with very little. It is hard to walk out without taking a cat or dog home with you! They have so many to pick from and all of them need a permanent home even though they get great care and lots of love! This shelter deserves to win this contest!

    Pros

Lots of nice people and animals

    Cons

    need more room

  • 59. West Plains Pets

    by: cassaundra

I hope we win because the West Plains animal shelter is small, poor, and needs money to help rebuild and set up dogs for adoption. Most of the animals are stray and homeless. They need the money. by: DesireeHuckabee

Despite much opposition, this shelter has thrived due to all the hard work of these people. They are amazing, they do what most others won't & always put the animals first. We are fortunate & blessed to have them in West Plains. They deserve this communities support.

They don't really get much for what they are doing but they care enough to do it anyway. I think they are amazing people and hope that they get a chance to eventually provide the animals with the care they deserve.

    Pros

Very kind-hearted people who are so welcoming to all of their customers.

    Cons

Before they moved locations I just thought it was mostly a thrift store.

  • 69. Great place!

    by: lilnurse2001

I am a nurse and was very impressed with the cleanliness of the shelter. The animals are cared for in a very knowledgeable and professional manner. Any sick animal is kept in separate quarters from the healthy animals, and all animals are loved! Speedy, the kitty in a wheelchair is so cute and sweet! Most shelters would have put him down, but they made him a wheelchair that gives him independence and mobility again! How great! What a fun place to visit!

  • 78. Caring for the Least of These

    by: CarolaMc

I recently adopted a cat from the West Plains Regional Animal Shelter. I was very impressed with the cleanliness and the affection that staff members showed for each animal. Animals are not kept caged and are divided among two or three rooms. Animals that show any sign of sickness are confined separately in cages.\r\n\r\nI was particularly impressed by a grey cat who was fitted with a special device that enabled it to walk, even though it is paralyzed. It traveled up and down the hallway quite rapidly and seemed very contented. I suspect that many shelters would simply have euthanized it.\r\n\r\nThe staff called each kitty by name and told me about them without having to consult any written information.\r\n\r\nWhen I left with my new Siamese cat, the staff took a picture of us and called out greetings as we made our way to the care.\r\n\r\nThis shelter does great work on a very limited budget.

    Pros

Does great work on a budget

    Cons

Doesn't have the capacity to care for all the needy animals in the area

  • 79. WPRAS is great!

    by: CindyPuppyLover

I have been a fan of the West Plains Regional Animal Shelter for years. They are a great group of people who truly care about animals. I have personally taken a cat with kittens in for adoption after rescueing them from a house that was about to be burned down as part of a fire department training exercise and they were wonderful. Later I returned and adopted Mama. I have friends who have adopted here as well and they were very pleased with the services and the staff. Keep up the great work!

    Pros

    Caring staff and wonderful shelter

    Cons

    They need a bigger shelter

  • 80. Best no-kill shelter

    by: poopypants

This shelter is so good that I would even consider living there if I had to. This is the best place any unwanted, abandoned animal can get to. It is a sanctuary. The people there are always friendly.

    Pros

no-kill, very helpful, caring, friendly, doing the best they can with what they have, which isn't much

    Cons

underfunded, not adequately supported by community

  • 81. Helping shelter

    by: jennypaws

I do rescue work myself and know how hard it is to get all the work done that needs to be done to care for the animals. I think they do a great job at this shelter with the limited help they get and volunteers they have. I wish I could do more to help all the animals and this is my small contribution to your shelter. Good luck.

    by: sk8boy1389

I like the idea that the thrift shop is supporting the animal shelter. I really like to go there and look around and see all the animals. I know that Trish and Dennis work very hard to keep the shelter going. I liked it when Dennis built a wheel chair for one of the cats, instead of putting it down. This shelter deserves to win this makeover. They all work really hard.

    Pros

A nice shelter for animals and hard working volunteers

    Cons

    Not enough help

  • 83. A Wonderful Place

    by: Busia

It was a struggle getting the shelter started. Trish and a lot of people worked hard and long, sometimes against the odds. But they did succeed and are still struggling to improve conditions for the animals, for more animals, more care. It's a great place with great people and lovely animals, pets. Even the sick and elderly get love and attention and care. They deserve to win this contest or at least benefit greatly in their participation.

  • 84. Wakeup call

    by: lunachick6

WPRAS is a wonderful shelter run by caring staff who know what the right thing to do is. They suffer from lack of support from the city and from the community, but the bottom line is that we need them! The animals that they take in and give a second chance to deserve that chance, and we, as a community, owe it to them since the overpopulation is a direct result of our own failure to honor our pets. I have sent many people their way who needed a good pet, and none of them have come away empty handed or regretful.

    Pros

Fantastic staff, clean, well-cared for animals, caring environment

    Cons

Not enough space to hosue all the animals that need shelter

  • 85. Trying hard to serve a large area

    by: mcshelll

It is a tough job serving the animals in a large rural area. West Plains animal shelter does the best job it can, but is in need of more support in order to help more animals. Sometimes animals are turned away due to lack of space. This is a sad position for them to be in. They really need a shelter makeover to be able to help more.

I used to live in West Plains, and I had a dog just dumped out on my street. My lease would not allow any inside or outside dogs, and I didn't know anyone who could take him in. I took him to the West Plains Regional Animal Shelter. The volunteers at the shelter were very helpful, took this poor dog in to care for him. There is a great need for this shelter in this area, and they deserve all the help they can get. I don't know what I would have done without them. Thank you so much!

    by: MichaelCurtis

WPRAS is a great addition to the West Plains area; at the present time it occupies a good location with great accessibility to the public and patrons; but its physical plant (buildings) need to be up-graded to provide for larger breed dogs. Write an Entry\r\nFeb \r\n16 \r\n2008 9:47pm\r\n\r\nOur Pets & Our Shelter\r\n\r\nPosted by Rebecca L. (RebeccaLehr) \r\n\r\nWe have 3 dogs. Our dogs names are Nesa & Nashaka. They are both 8 months old and are Shih -Tzu's. Then we have Mahek, she is 8 weeks old and is part Elk Hound & German Shepard. Resently I found a lost puppy in West Plains MO. The ground was full of snow and very cold outside. I walked to the houses in that area, trying to find her home but was unsucessful. The next morning, I took her to the West Plains Animal Shelter in West Plains MO. I gave them as much information as I could. They asked for a donation for the puppy. I am disabled and am on a limit income, and with 3 dogs of my own, I told them I could not afford to make a donation. They were very kind about this with me and told me that the bath I gave her, flea treatment and feeding her was well worth my donation! The West Plains Shelter folks are loving and hard working folks would indeed benifit the Animal Shelter Make over. Our community is small and on a limited income but you would not know it from the well maintained West Plains Animal Shelter. I know these volunteers give alot more than their time. They give their love and soul to these dogs and cats. Won't you please consider to Make over going to the West Plains Shelter? Thank you very much and may God Bless you & yours always.\r\n\r\nSincerely,\r\nMrs. Rebecca Lehr\r\nWest Plains, MO.\r\n\r\n

    by: CarolSederburg

My knowledge comes from working as a volunter for over two years. The animal rooms are scrubed down twice daily. They are sweeped, moped, sanitized and the walls are washed down. Cages are cleaned, water and food bowls are washed and refilled as needed. Litter boxes are dumped and cleaned and refilled. Toys and clean bedding is placed for comfort, by the time you get done its time to start all over again. The individuals who haven't had a chance to volunter need to try it ! by: CatzAPlenty

This little shelter manages to provide a clean safe place for homeless animals. Through donations and money made from the thrift store, they earn barely enough to meet their expenses. I would like to encourage more Howell County residents to support this shelter. They are not funded by the city of West Plains or Howell County, but they provide a much needed service to the community. If you are thinking about adding a pet to your household, please consider coming to the shelter. Your new best friend could be here.

I was visiting family in the West Plains area a few months ago. I was looking to adopt a dog so I went to the shelter to see what they had. I saw so many that I wanted to take home, but only was able to take home one since I already had two dogs at home. I have never been so happy of the dog I chose! She is so great and gets along with my other ones and my cats! When I go back to West Plains here in a few months, I will be adopting another dog and possible a cat!\r\nThe staff is so friendly. If I lived in West Plains, I would volunteer there everyday. I did volunteer there a couple of days while I was visiting in the area. It is such a joy to help out with the animals! I volunteered one day at the cattery and volunteered one day where the dogs are at. \r\nKeep up the good work!\r\n

I have also noticed when one of them are on the phone, they are very curtious, 'yes mam, no mam', yes sir, no sir', thank you, etc. \r\n\r\nIf any shelter should win this make over, it should be WEST PLAINS REGIONAL ANIMAL SHLETER!!!!! \r\nThey need a bigger facility so they can accomidate all the animals on one property. \r\n\r\nMany thanks to everyone that is making this contest possible so all shelters can participate and try to win a makeover for their shelter. \r\n\r\nGOOD LUCK!!!\r\n

  • 112. Making the Most out of Little

    by: rothgeb

It is safe to say that practically every shelter entered in this contest is backed by people dedicated to animal welfare. The WPRAS is one that has accomplished the most in proportion to its limited resources and community support. I am a regular volunteer also for a different and larger shelter some distance from the WPRAS. It too is highly deserving, but the WPRAS is the shelter that does the most with the least, and also the one with the greatest needs.

    by: littlemisshavocc

WPRAS is one of the few things that makes me really happy. I love every cat in that building, and I'd take them all home if I didn't already have enough cats. :D The staff is very nice and lets me sit in the rooms with the cats. All of the cats are very well taken care of and like most shelter animals, will automatically claim a place in your lap...or on your shoulders, if you're lucky.\r\nLong story short, I am -so- happy that someone is out there taking care of these animals. If they weren't, they would probably be dead.

    by: mich823

When I moved to this area, this is the only shelter that I could find. Considering the size of the town they are trying to serve, they are doing a remarkable job with the limited space that they have. I have never seen a setup like theirs for the cats. They are not kept in cages like most other shelters that I have seen. The cats are in rooms that have things for them to climb on, toys and interaction with the other cats. They allowed my teenage boys and I to go into the rooms and sit and play with the cats and kittens until we found just the right one for our family. The facility is remarkably clean, the staff was great, they took their time with us and did not rush us at all. All of the animals there were well taken care of. There is a seperate room for the ones that need medical attention so that they do not infect the others. I was very pleased with the kitten that we got from them!!! I have lived in areas that charge alot more to adopt pets. I hope they receive the makeover or enough in donations to be able to add on to their facility. They deserve it.

    Pros

    Caring, Professional

  • 121. This is a wonderful shelter for this area. There is nothing else like it in West Plains - I have rescued several kittens and, not only were they lovely taken care of, but wonderful homes were found for them. This is a no-kill facility with a lot of love.

    by: Lkeith

I would love to see this facility receive the help that is so badly needed as West Plains has so many mistreated and homeless pets who are in dire need of a much larger and much larger staffed facility!

    Pros

The facility is not large enough which is not the fault of the staff - there is not enough public support which is sad!

    Cons

Not enough volunteers, the work falls on a just a few who work very hard and lovely and the facility is not adequate because of lack of funds from the community.

    by: charlienumber1

West Plains regional animal shelter is a wonderful shelter for animals. They do wonders with so very little. I love the shelter and have had to bring in several cats over the past 10 years. They deserve to win a make-over for their tireless efforts.

    Pros

Caring people, devoted to the welfare of animals, always helpful

    Cons

    need bigger building!

I think West Plains Regional Animal Shelter is a wonderful shelter for cats and dogs. Volunteers keep the cats rooms very nice and comfortable for the cats they also make sure the cats have food and never go hungry. The dogs also have nice but small pins. The only thing wrong with West Plains Regional Animal Shelter is the shelter is to small. But i think the volunteers are smart and know what they are doing when trying to have a cat or dog adopted.

    Pros

The people keep the rooms clean and make sure all the cats are clean, healthy, and happy. The people realy know how to help the cats and dogs get homes and they make sure that there not sending a cat to a family that will hurt it.

    Cons

    small.

  • 125. Doing a great job taking care of the Animals!

    by: trav78

I have been there several times. I have never seen such a dedicated bunch of people. They care so much about the animals, they stay all hours of the night just to make sure the animals are comfortable. They need more room for animals and we all know money is in short supply. Most shelters are in need of more room!\r\nIam amazed that they are still up and running with the lack of support from people who have a lot to say and give no physical help. My hope is that all shelters would try to get along and help each other. I know if i was critized all the time, I would not be trying as hard as they do! \r\nThey are truly and sincerely trying to help as many animals as they can physically do. So please do what is right for the animals, they need this shelter-makeover!

    Pros

Good, caring, clean shelter, easy to talk to,great place, hard working people.

    Cons

nothing bad ! need bigger shelter!

  • 127. West Plains is fortunate to have a non-profit, no kill shelter in their area

    by: gonetothedogs

I support WPRAS because of the wonderful effort they are making for animals. The staff give of themselves tirelessly because they love animals and they want to make their community a better place to live. I have family in the region who volunteer there in various ways, and I am willing to help as I can too, because this is a great cause. I'm hoping that at a minimum, this contest will awaken people in the area so they will come down and get their hands dirty for animals.

    Pros

no kill facility, great staff, this is the best place it can be given the current support

    Cons

needs more support - volunteering and money

  • 128. Great Place to shop

    by: Angelmae

The West Plains Regional Animal Shelter is needed very much in this community. As a volunteer I am only able to do work from my home. I send out thank you cards, help with the newsletter, memberships and help with fund-raiser when I can. \r\nI have witnessed the need for a complete make-over of this animal shelter.. They need more room for animals and up to date equiptment, cages and so on..They absolutely need more support from the community. \r\nThis is not a 9 to 5 job. A lot of people do not realize this is a 7 day a week job, when you are home for any holiday there is someone taking care of the animals at the shelter. While you are in church or fishing on Saturday there is someone feeding and cleaning up after the dogs and cats.\r\nW.P.R.A.S. is a non-profit organization, trying to better the community by doing what they can with limited resourses to keep the strays out of harms way. They are willing to give up their lives to keep this shelter open, so please help them.\r\nAnimals have to be turned away alot because no one is willing to help build a really nice shelter big enough to handle them. These people are doing the hard work, please help make it a little easier on the ones who have put in 10 to 11 years of there life only to have to struggle for every dime to just get by. \r\nThey are trying to win a make-over for a new building, please help by earning points!

    Pros

    sincere, dedicated, work hard

    Cons

    none

I have gotten three of my babies from this shelter and my life has been so inriched. These people truly care about these animals and do the best they can with what they have. They have made my life so much better and enabled my family to become bigger and better with the addition of Comet( cat) Molly (Mastiff) and Tillie (boxer). I cant think of any place that deserves the makeover more\r\n\r\n\r\nSpecial thanks to Debbie and Trish\r\n

    by: MissLinda48

They do a wonderful job with what they have! There's not a nicer, more caring bunch of people around. The shelter has always been neat and tidy. With 80 cats or more, it's hard to keep it smelling good, but they try their hardest! The job is never ending, but they keep on taking care of things because they care.

    Pros

great location, nice building, caring volunteers

    Cons

    needs help

  • 135. So happy they are around

  • 136. A Thankless Job

    by: petsmylife

I have read the comments of people who call themselves pet lovers. If that were so, would they not understand that inorder for a shelter to take care of the animals properly they need an intake fee. All or most shelters I have been to ask for more than $10.00. This money is a drop in a bucket..This shelter feeds & cares for over 80 cats, which use litter (400 pds a week) food (150 pds a week). They get sick and go to the veternarian. The dogs go through 450 pds of dog food a week. The cats and the workers like to have a heated building, so thus a electric bill...cleaning supplies..etc. The shelter is funded only by donations and sales at the thrift store. They are not state or city funded. \r\nThe shelter has only two fulltime volunteers, I bet they are getting pretty tired. If you want to help out at a shelter that deserves a make-over go ask what you can do!!\r\nThis shelter is USDA inspected and is doing the best it can with the help it has.\r\nThis is a no-kill shelter, so if they are full they cannot take animals that they have no room for. That is just part of being a no-kill shelter!\r\nSet aside your feelings and do whats right for the animals!

    Pros

Dedicated hard working staff, broad shoulders, faithful, big hearts

    Cons

need bigger building & more volunteers

  • 137. Christmas Kitten from WPRAS

    by: karensbirds

Staff was very nice. Allowed me to hold the kittens until I found the "special" one that whispered "You're mine"! Although I do wonder why they waited til I was almost out the door to yell "Her name is Terror"!\r\nThey have a good thrift shop too, I always enjoy browsing thru it. Karen

    Pros

Lots of places to play and some hidey holes

    Cons

    Cramped office space

  • 138. Voluteering

    by: petloverforever

Volunteering is hard work, and I know they need volunteers badly. When you Visit a shelter you only see the cats and dogs playing, not how long it took to get them all cleaned up. \r\nShelters need your help to keep all the cats & dogs happy. So help West Plains Regional Animal Shelter win a make-over so the animals have a better home.\r\nThe shelter staff has given their lives for the animal for almost 11 years. They deserve to be rewarded for their efforts.

    Pros

    Nice,clean,and hardworkers

    Cons

    No cons.

  • 139. WPRAS Review

    by: Sterofuse

This is a great shelter! Im trying to get the word out about it because not to many people are very interested in animals around here. The shelter is GREAT. Everyone there is very nice. They even built a rolling pair of wheels for a cat named Speedy with paralyzed back legs. They really care about their animals and they are always full. Please come by and adopt some. It would really help. Plus you get a faithful companion with you for the next many years to come. Thank you for listening.

    Pros

Nice people, Smart people, can answer almost any question you can ask.

    Cons

    None

  • 140. Good Shelter? Bad Shelter?

    by: Liam

This is a great shelter and im just trying to get the word out about it because not to many people are very interested in animals. I was told that someone once dropped some cats off there and left them for the shelter to take care of. The shelter is GREAT. Everyone there is very nice. They even built a rolling pair of wheels for a cat with paralyzed back legs. They really care about their animals and they are always full so come by and adopt some. It would really help.

    Pros

They combined the shelter with a thrift shop to help raise money to get new things for the cats. Never put any cats down. Are very nice people.

    Cons

I really can't think of any.

  • 141. Good Volunteers are the key to a clean and successful shelter.

    by: wpras

W.P. Regional Animal Shelter has a great policy concerning the life of an animal. " It is not up to us to decide which animal should live or die" By euthanizing one so another can live is playing the roll of God and that is not our job. \r\nThey are dedicated to helping orphaned and injured animals have a better quality of life untill it is time to go to a good home or over the rainbow bridge!\r\nGreat Job!

    Pros

Dedicated to the wellfare of the animals.

    Cons

The shelter needs more volunteers !

  • 142. WPRAS and Out of Harm's Way Thrift Shop is the best no-kill shelter effort in our region

    by: rememberingromeo

I've been involved with West Plains Regional Animal Shelter and Thrift Shop for most of the last seven years I've lived in this area, although I really don't know exactly when I first came in contact with them. I do know that the directors, Trish and Dennis Hammen, are some of the best people I've ever known. I can't say enough about them and the dedicated volunteer staff that work with them to make this shelter what it is. Their hearts are big. They extend themselves far beyond most people would. They even take in, improve, and give length of life to some animals that others have given up on. One case in point, is that of Speedy, a cat who has been left paralyzed from essentially the waist down, but that now lives a good and happy life, and is able to get around in a lower body "wheelchair". What a blessing it is to meet this little rascal and to witness his eagerness and joy in living. Our region is so blessed to have this shelter and the special people who are called to give a part of themselves there in the name of compassion and goodness for all of God's creatures. It is unfortunate rural towns and their regions don't find themselves in a position to do more to help stray animals. This lacking is at the top of the list of correctable shames of small town America. We would all be better people and live in a better world if we found ourselves willing to serve the helpless we so easily pass by on the streets and byways of our communities. I am only now finding myself in a position to provide a very small amount of volunteer time to help this amazing effort for animals, though I have tried to be supportive in other ways before now. It is my hope and prayer that many more people will become aware of WPRAS and when they do, then also find themselves able to "get their hands dirty" one way or another for the animals, as well. Volunteering with animals at such a place is so personally rewarding. Just think of what one hour of holding and playing with animals could do for you, and you'll never consider the cost in time and effort. There are no heavy demands on volunteers, either. A person can come just to sit and play with animals, or a volunteer can sign on to work some number of hours doing anything from staffing the thrift shop, washing and folding laundry, hanging out linens on a nice day, or of course, cleaning up quarters and cat boxes, but even that can be as much or as little as you like. Some might say cat boxes are smelly things, but that doesn't really even need to be a consideration -more volunteers make for rosier conditions for people and animals alike, or just simply consider bringing along a dust mask for the sensitive nose. An hour or two of clean-up once or twice a month couldn't be considered a burden for any volunteer, could it? This shelter really deserves to win a makeover so it can get the new facility it really needs to be able to adequately serve our region.\n

    Pros

no-kill shelter, great people and staff, dependable, great service to region, don't know where animals would be without them

    Cons

nothing negative about the shelter, but the region really needs for this shelter to win the makeover so we can get a new site and building
