    by: wprec

i started volenteering at wahs yesterday so far i love it i'm so syced to be with the animals i can only go on weekends but thats a lot better than never.it was so funny today i was in the puppy/small dog room and the 2 dogs in there today tiny and nutter butter so tiny was on her second stay and i was playing with her so the she gets adopted so then i was playing with nutter butter and he got adopted. they have a nice 2 acres to walk dogs on and 3 pens to let them off leash. they have well educated staff of only 15 members Fay the volenteer coordinator is very nice and keeps us up to date on every thing. the dogs usually get out once a day so when they're out they're reved up and ready to run. so when you walk in don't be surprised if it's crowded and if the dogs see leashes they get excited. and remember the dogs have very different personalities whaen they are out of they're cages so don't just pass them by if they're barking or sitting in a corner ask to see them don't just open up the cage.,also remember the volenteers might not know everything about the animals just yet so try asking a staff member if that happens.

    Pros

    no kill shelter

  • 4. Donating to the shelter

    by: jodyhall

I just started donating to the shelter. They had an angel tree last year for Christmas. I took an angel from the tree that was a pit bull mix. I got everything on his wish list. When my daughter and I took our stuff to the shelter we fetlt very good. The staff was very grateful for our donations. We did it again this year. Im going to continue to do this. We walk around and pet lots of the animals. Its a nice place to visit. If I could I would love to take some of the animals home. I already have animals of my own. Its nice to know that they get good care there. Keep up the good work!!

We got our second dog from this shelter and we absolutely love him. We were also very impressed with their staff. They were all very nice and helpful. I would love to see this shelter get a makeover. They really need it. I would definitely advise someone to get their next dog there. This shelter takes good care of their animals but they need as much help as they can possible get.

    by: maryjanelos

I got my cat Cosmo from WAHS on February 28, 2007. He was 9 months old at the time. I had him declawed at the shelter and they did a great job. they are caring individuals whose only goal is to protect animals and find them good homes. They deserve an A+ rating.

    Pros

    Caring people who love pets

    Cons

Not enough space for all the pets they receive

  • 10. Two Older Cats

    by: shamrock

When my dad had to go into a nursing home, we had no one to take his two cats. He had rescued them as kittens and they were about 10 years old. Not only did Washington Area Humane Society take the cats, but they were able to place them together, so they can live out their lives together. The staff was friendly and kind to us. They go above and beyond as far as we are concerned.

    Pros

    Helpful friendly staff.

    Cons

Overcrowded, but still took our cats.

  • 11. Big Hearts !!!

    by: Gr8snoopy

This safe haven is like no other no-kill shelter around. The staff & volunteers that work here are the very best. They work VERY hard keeping up the shelter & taking wonderful care of ALL the animals that live there. I adopted my dog "Kirby" as a puppy 6 yrs ago. Then last year we fostered 2 of "Ripley's" puppies (litter of 10). We found a home for 1 of them & fell in love w/the other and kept him..his name is "Courage" and weighs in @ 125 lbs & had his 1st b'day in April. He is a gentle giant of a guy..his only 'flaw' being that he is an expert drooooler, but loved nevertheless.\r\nThank you to everyone at the WAHS, you are our heros !!!!!!!

    Pros

The people that work here have the biggest hearts !!!

    Cons

Our shelter is old & could use some up-dating

    by: NANAMO42

While I unfortunately cannot take one of the precious babies home with me, (and trust me, I'd love to take them all!) I love to go and visit, and have been very impressed with the level of care and love, esp. given the limitations of the physical plant. I was so sorry that they didn't win the makeover.\nSarah

    Pros

    Obvious love and great care.

    Cons

Unfortunate limits due to size of building.

    by: PixiesRevenge

Hi, im amy from the spca in cattaraugus county and i watched your video and wanted to say how absolutley wonderful you are. I loved that you made it clear this was more then a competition for the million dollar makeover but a place for animal shelters and animal lovers to get together and all fight for the same thing. When you said that if someone else out there deserves the million dollar makeover over you guys- god bless them & hope they spend the money well - it almost made me cry. (i guess i just didnt expect to hear something like that) You guys seem like wonderful people & i just wanted to let you know that I think that!\r\n\r\n-amy

  • 18. What an amazing place!

    by: kendallsmom090202

The Washington Area Humane Society is unbelievable. We adopted our girl, Chooco a little over a year ago from there. We saw our girl on-line and had to go meet her. It turns out our girl had a court case pending against her previous owners for neglect. It took us 3 weeks to be able to adopt Chooco because of this. While we waited to bring her home, the staff was amazing. We took our dog that we already had, Tater, and our two daughters down to the shelter several times so the staff could help us integrate Chooco smoothly into our family. Their knowledge of how to do this amazed me. Chooco and Tater had are both pit bulls. They taught us pit bulls are chest dogs. They taught us how to know when the dogs were playing or being a little more mean to each other. They taught what steps to take when we took Chooco from the shelter to our home to make it a smooth transition because to Tater. When Chooco's day in court finally came and the staff actually called me to let me know how everything went. \r\n\r\nSeveral months ago, my husband, Chooco and myself, took a trip back to the Washington Area Humane Society to donate toys and food for the animals that have yet to find a home. What amazed me was not the fact that the staff remembered Chooco, but she remembered them!!! When she saw the staff, her tail started wagging and she became very happy. She knew she was in a safe place surrounded by people who love and care for her. Her little tail wagging is all that needs to be said about this amazing place.\r\n

  • 19. This shelter should be the winner!

    by: ztT4MP37313837

This shelter does a great job for our community. However the building is small and needs many improvements in order to help them keep up such a great job that they are doing. The community stands behind the HS and tries to help find homes or medical attention to all the animals in need. I'm not a person of wealth in fact I live by a disability check monthly but I stand behind the great job that they do and give monthly to their PATHS Program because I'm inspired by the good that they provide. Please consider this shelter for the makeover: let them help more animals. Thank you.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Pros

    It's a no kill shelter

    Cons

    The building needs improvements

  • 20. Doughboy

    by: ztT4MP64464330

We got our dog "Ben" from Washington Humane Society where he was called "Doughboy". He had been there for 7 months and needed a good home since his owner had died and no one in the family wanted him. He had been an outside dog, but the staff had trained him and we did followup training. The staff was really hoping he'd be picked and sang his praises. The Humane Officer had a special bond with him and got a little teary-eyed seeing him in our car. She came over to say good-bye and he gave her a kiss. He is our first dog and has been a real blessing. I would love to be in a position to help this shelter grow and improve the environment for all the animals they help. Please give them a makeover!\r\nRose and John Tomko

    Pros

    Very caring

    Cons

    Not enough room

  • 21. very helpful

    by: lilscrydvl

About a year ago, someone dropped off a kitten in our laundry facility at the apartment complex I live in. Whoever it was put the poor kitten in one of the driers. Luckily, we found him and rescued him. He was in such bad shape it just broke my heart- severely anemic, nothing but skin and bones, covered w/ fleas, bone spurs in his mouth- yet when you touched him, he started to purr. We already had the limit we could for pets, but knew this poor little guy needed help- lots. We had no choice but to take him to the WAHS. When I went in, one of the ladies behind the counter started to say, "We can't...." and looked at my tearfilled eyes and said "bring him over".. They looked at the kitten, rushed him to the vet and asked me a few questions. They were so amazing. not only were they worried about the little kitten, but when I explained I already had two and couldn't take him in, they made sure my other two did not have direct contact w/ the kitten, and made me feel so much better about the whole situation. I can only hope that the little guy is doing well somewhere in an amazing home and thank the WAHS for being there when not only I needed them, but a poor little kitten needed them badly. This place deserves the shelter makeover and so much more.

    Pros

    excellent staff

    Cons

    really needs the shelter makeover!!

    by: Pamika

We got my son's kitten there around Halloween in 2006. He was soo clean and had his shots and was fixed and he has a microchip. The cost for these services was very reasonable. If we decide to add to our family, we will certainly go there again.

    Helpful knowledgeable staff

    Cons

    by: Deakos

We were able to get our cat "Buddy" from the Washington County Humane Society. He is great and we love him very much. He is a great fit for our family. The humane society also offers neutering and spaying services for much less than a vet. They have many animals that need a loving home.

    by: Mimi2547

I think that this shelter is great that they don't kill any of their animals, but it is a little crowded. They need more volunteers to work their, but overall their service is very good.

    Pros

They don't kill any of their animals and take in all strays

    Cons

Their lack of funding prevents them from achieving all that is necessary

  • 28. Lousy move Zootoo.

    by: ztT4MP59789619_DEAD

I think this is a terrible move. It smells like the same political garbage that has invaded every aspect of our society. If there's going to be a contest, make it a contest, not some subjective decision by one guy.\n\nI'm very disappointed and will probably not return to this site.

    Pros

    Great staff

    Cons

    Needs an updated facility

  • 29. Confusion here...

    by: ztT4MP88468877

Okay, did we or did we, (we, meaning the animal lovers of Washington County and the surrounding areas,) not follow the directions correctly? To my understanding of the rules of the contest, the shelter with the most points was the winner of the $100,000,000.00 Makeover. Therefore, according to the "rules", WAHS should win the contest, since 2nd place was behind by somewhere around 625,000 points at last count. But now, a "panel of judges" will come and inspect the shelters to find out who is most deserving. So, why did we vote in the first place? This upsets me to no end, as I have adopted from WAHS in the past, and I am still a frequent visitor. This shelter DESERVES to win the prize. The staff and the volunteers go way above and beyond the call of duty. Now that I have had my say, I will get down off my soapbox.

    Pros

    Everything is for the animals

    Cons

    Not enough space or volunteers

  • 30. Way to Go!

    VERY NICE PEOPLE

    Cons

    VERY SMALL DOOR WAY

  • 32. Caring

    by: roxlle

We visit the shelter periodically. The staff really cares for the animals in their care. \r\nThey really do need a new and larger shelter.\r\n\r\nThe new shelter should take into consideration that there are many people with disabilities that would like to visit the shelter. Take into consideration the door widths and a one level building should be built. A handicap bathroom should be built. A special room where wheelchairs can roll up to visit with the pets. \r\nLevel entry. \r\n\r\nThere needs to be a better viewing area for all visitors. A special, safe, room for spending time getting to know the pet considered for adoption. \r\n\r\nA level parking lot is needed. \r\n\r\nA special room for a vet to examine the pets, and to take care of them.\r\n\r\n

    Pros

    Caring staff

    Cons

    needs new building

  • 33. Keeping animals first.

    by: Terryszoo

We took two kittens to them who had been abandoned in a local barn. We could not take them ourselves since we have already rescued three cats this year. IF we took these kittens and added to our other three we were getting to be seriously over crowded. Washington Area Humane Society took the two kittens, but upon testing them they were found to have Feline Luekemia. We were in shock, because we know most shelters put infected kittens down when they find this disease, but WAHS took them and found a place where they could live out their lives out in safety without having to fight raccoons for food. WAHS are really great. We love this shelter, the people there really care and to them animals really are number one.

    Pros

    Kept in great shape.

    Cons

    Becoming small and outdated.

  • 46. Our best choice for a dog.

    by: Sadief

We have been blessed with being the owners of three dogs, that were devoted, loved, and fun be a part of our family. We have fond memories and many pictures of our dogs, growing up with our kids.\r\nI am a firm believer that a dog is a man, woman and kids best friend. \r\nWe now own a Brittany that came from the Rescue League of VA Beach. Our daughter owns a Brittany and lives there. \r\nAll our previous dogs (2) came from the Washington \r\nArea Humane Society. I have recomended W.A.H.S. to many of our friends. \r\n\r\nIn my 17 years of being a Nanny to children, one of my VERY favorite trips, was going out to Washington Area Humane Society, with the children, to see the pets on display. I always taught the them to treat animals with kindness, love and caring for them in the proper way. Sue Frankenberry

    Pros

I chose our first two puppies from the Washington Area Humane Society that gave us almost 16 years of devotion, love, fun, and antics. He turned out to be a beautiful Bearded Collie and we named him Gordon.

  • 59. My mother's cat

    by: pjvj

My father had recently passed and their house was so quiet for my mum she could barely tolerate it. I searched everywhere for a kitten in midwinter. Finally, Washington Shelter had rescued some kittens from a barn. My mother adored her, pampered her, and loved her to pieces. She named her Angel and is now nine years old. I guess this is less a review than a story. My husband travelled to the shelter to pick her up after having called out there and they held the kitten for him, were very kind and answered all his questions. <-----review part\n\nWhen my mother died about 18 months ago I requested donations to the shelter in lieu of flowers because they had found Angel for her and her love for Angel is what kept her going during the hardest parts of grieving my father's death.

    Pros

Had a rescue cat in the middle of winter

    Cons

Long drive for some areas (but worth it)

    by: amyeyes

When you walk in the door you are welcomed, you can tell the animals are well taken care of and the staff is very willing to help you with all your needs. This is a great place to adopt a pet from because you are getting a well cared for animal.

    Pros

    Everyone is so helpful

    Cons

    distance from my home

  • 61. A place of safety and compassion

    by: taurus1963

I stop by this shelter nearly every weekend just to visit the animals. They need love and attention, that is all they ask. The employees are compassionate, attentive, caring, and very knowledgeable. You could never place a greater value on the folks, that take the time out of their lives to give back, like the ones at this shelter. It is such a shame that there just isn't enough money or people willing to volunteer a little of their heart to show the animals at the shelter, that they are loved, and not forgotten.\r\n

    Pros

A cozy blanket for every animal

    Cons

    Not enough funding

i've been coming to the humane society ever since i was little. i get all my animals here; they are all very well taken care of, the staff is kind and informed, and i've been brought much joy by the animals i have taken home from this particular shelter. i always felt that this shelter wasn't big enough, as it always almost full, or just plain full. i think it is wonderful that it is a no-kill shelter. all of these animals deserve a chance at a new life where they will be loved and treated well as they should be. why WOULDN'T you want that?

  • 69. A wonderful place to adopt pets

    by: Pollywogg570

We adopted Samantha from them about a year ago. They were wonderful. We had other dogs and a cat living in the house so we had to get a dog that was friendly with other animals. They allowed us to take her into a pen with another dog to see how well she got along with other dogs. They also allowed us to take her into the cat room to see how she got along with cats. When we decided to take her they gave us a lease, collar, tags, food, a toy, and all kinds of things for her. She was already spayed and was also microchiped there, which was a plus. Everyone there was very helpful and appreciative and you could tell that they all loved animals. Everyone there works very hard to ensure that every animal gets a loving home. I will definately adopt from them again.

    by: GIRLSHOTY

MY PARENTS GOT THE BEST DOG THERE, HE WAS A BORDER COLLIE NAMED BANDIT, AND HE LIVED A VERY LONG, GOOD, SPOILED LIFE. THEY HAVE YET TO GET ANOTHER DOG BECAUSE THEY DONT THINK THAT THEY CAN GET ANOTHER ONE AS GOOD AS HIM. WHEN MY DAD RETIRES MY BROTHER AND I ARE GOING TO GET HIM A DOG. WE WERE LOOKING AT THE PURE BREEDS WITH PAPERS AND ALL, BUT WE HAVE DECIDED TO RETURN TO THE WASHINGTON HUMANE SOCIETY TO GET HIM HIS DOG. WHILE TRYING TO FIND THE PERFECT DOG WE REMEMBERED BANDIT AND HOW MUCH THEY LOVED HIM. YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE A PURE BREED OR BUY FROM A BREEDER TO HAVE A GOOD, LOYAL, LOVING DOG. ALL ANY ANIMAL WANTS IS TO HAVE A COMPANION, JUST LIKE PEOPLE, AND THEY GIVE UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. I THINK IT IS A SHAME HOW MANY ANIMALS END UP IN SHELTERS, ESPECIALLY THE ONES WHO HAVE BEEN ABUSED, NEGLECTED, AND TAKEN AWAY. I THINK THAT THE PEOPLE WHO TREAT ANIMALS LIKE THAT SHOULD BE TREATED THE SAME WAY AND SEE WHAT IT IS LIKE. THANKS TO GOOD CARING PEOPLE AND SHELTERS LIKE THIS ONE SOME OF THE ANIMALS GET A SECOND CHANCE AND END UP IN GOOD HOMES.

    by: IrishAngel3d

We have had the good fortune of adopting 2 dogs from this shelter. Our first was a golden Lab Heidi Ho @ 7 months of age. she had a great disposition and was good with our granddaughter, We thought no other animal could be better, until we found Bluie Blue. a mixed breed Lab that has stolen the hearts of everyone who meets him. He is gentle and playful. He loves to ride in the truck or car. He has excellent manners. All of the grandchildren(four)call to speak to Bluie. We hold the phone so he can "speak" to them. He is the first one to get a hug as they come through the door. His canine smile is from ear to ear. He was found walking along the road; someone had abandoned him or he was lost. He had been very well trained. The vet estimated him to be about 2 years old when we got him seven years ago. It wasn't long until he had us trained! lol. He loves sugar cookies and cheese.

  • 82. Friends

    by: JMShade

I have adopted a dog and a cat from the humane society and had wonderful experiences both times. The staff is friendly, caring, and knowledgeable. I also had to report the mistreatment of about 28 cats that were living in a home next door to mine. The woman who lived there had just neglected them for so long and then, eventually, abandoned them. She said she was coming back to take care of them and not to report her, but I didn't have the heart to let those poor cats suffer any longer, they deserved to be in loving, happy homes. The Washington Area Humane Society took them in. I visited them in the shelter and the ones at PetSmart and before I knew it they had all found new homes. They truly are an outstanding organization. My family members have adopted from them, as well as my friends!

I volunteered at this shelter with my mother and sister as a teen. Everyone here is great and friendly, they are helpful and thankful to their volunteers. Great shelter and animals - we rescued about 6 cats from the shelter over the years and also fostered a pregnant cat (and the shelter allowed us to keep one of the baby's for free - though we kept 2). \n\nI don't know a shelter that deserves more love and awareness than this one! We had a very pleasant experience when we adopted our dog eight years ago. We went back a few times until we found just the right pet for our family. She has been a great addition even though we joke about her being a "big furball". The Washington Area Humane Society would really benefit from a makeover. It would be great to see the animals in bigger, newer, brighter spaces.

    Pros

    Lots to choose from

    Cons

Lots to choose from - need to be adopted

  • 121. My Shelter

    by: dabanker

It's so sad to see the homeless animals, but the staff walks them and it is very different from 10 - 20 years ago. They actually care and you can see that. Whenever I'm there, my heart aches but I know they are well taken care of.

    Pros

    Very helpful, nice to everyone

    Cons

    They need help

  • 122. They are great!

    by: star627

I adopted an 8 week old puppy about four years ago. The staff couldn't have been more helpful throughout the whole adoption process. They had the puppy there and waiting for me when I came into the shelter...the puppy was a Christmas gift and she couldn't have been any more perfect! She has brought our family so much joy over these past few years!! Thank you to the WAHS!!!

    Pros

They were very helpful and thorough with the adoption process.

    Cons

They needed more help or volunteers.

  • 123. Love em'!

    by: superkrissy

I love this shelter because the people that work there are wonderful to the customers and especially the animals. It's a non-killer shelter as well. Every shelter should be a non-killer. Give the animals another chance. This shelter is realy deserving of the make-over!

    Pros

    Non killer shelter

    Cons

Not enough room for the pets

  • 124. WAHS is the best!

    by: reagandog

This is a great shelter! My dog was two(ish) when we got her from there and she is the most gentle, sweet, loving dog! She was so well trained when we got her. The staff was very helpful in letting us know which dogs were better for young families, and she was a perfect match. They let us walk her around and get to know her before we decided to take her home. WAHS is friendly, helpful, and clean, but could really use some more space!

    Pros

no kill, great staff, pets well cared for

    Cons

I adopted my pet kitten, Cassie, from the Wash. Humane Society and I was very pleased with their staff, their compassion for the homeless animals and their helpfulness. I am so glad I visited and was able to find my loving companion...they certainly deserve to have a makeover for these precious little animals who do receive much love...

    by: nonnieweg

We have 2 cats and 2 dogs all of whom we adopted from the Washington County Humane Society. Our oldest is our 13 year old border collie lab mix. We adopted him at 8 weeks. Whenever anyone is looking to adopt we always suggest Washington.\r\n\r\nWish the little puppies and kittens were not spayed and neutered so young. But I guess not everyone is a responsible pet owner.

    Pros

The staff is wonderful. The animals are kept well

    Cons

Small, Falling apart, Neuter and Spay very early

  • 127. Forget eHarmony, find true love at the Washington Area Humane Society

I adopted my lab from the shelter and have volunteered to walk the other dogs. The dogs are well taken care of and the staff truly gives 150% to the care and well being of the animals there.

  • 128. They Deserve to Win

    by: rusty5

Over the years, I've adopted four cats from the shelter. The staff is wonderful and caring. They really try to help each and every animal that comes there. When I had to put to sleep my cat Baby, which I rescued from WAHS, the staff was so kind. I've kept in touch with them and when Baby passed, I received cards from different women at the shelter. Even after the adoption, they still maintained a tremendous level of caring. They deserve a shelter makeover more than any facility that I know. I pray that they win.

    Pros

    Knowledgeable and caring staff

    Cons

    Need better facilities

  • 129. No-Kill Shelter

    by: april72029

It's hard to go inside the shelter just to see the animals, you are going to want to adopt all of them just because you fall in love with them. I wish all of those animals could have a loving home!\n\nThe animals are well taken care of here, and the staff makes sure that the adopted animals are going to a good home, which I think is very important. Washington Area Humane Society definitely deserves a makeover!! :)

    Pros

    no-kill shelter

    Cons

    needs a makeover!

  • 130. SIMPLY THE BEST!!

THIS IS THE PLACE TO LOOK FOR A PET!!! THERE'S ALWAYS A VARIETY OF ANIMALS IN NEED OF A GOOD HOME. YOU CAN'T WALK IN THERE AND NOT FALL IN LOVE WITH AT LEAST ONE. THE STAFF IS AMAZING AND WILL TAKE THE TIME TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS. THEY WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU AND YOUR PET ARE WELL SUITED FOR EACH OTHER. THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO AND FIND UNCONDITIONAL LOVE FROM A PET....

  • 133. Thank You!

    by: Pam5238

I went to the shelter in June, 2007 to see if they had a dog which I could adopt. Because the shelter is a no-kill shelter I was able to find my very special dog who is also a very special needs dog. I expect that there are several shelters which would not have kept her. \r\n\r\nI found that the staff were all very involved in the care and welfare of the animals. Several of the people came up to me when they found I was fostering/adopting this dog. In fact, one of the girls even got teary-eyed when she found I was taking Maggie Mae home.\r\n\r\nI am certainly cheering for this shelter to receive the makeover!\r\n\r\n

    Pros

    The Staff

    Cons

    facility needs upgraded

  • 134. Love this shelter!

    by: FrancesSimon

I so appreciate this shelter. It is a no-kill shelter which gives every animal every chance to be adopted. It is a no-frills shelter, and it makes the most of the resources it garners from private contributions and volunteers. Those who contribute monthly receive a newsletter with their contribution envelopes which keeps them apprised of the shelter's and the animals' current needs. The shelter also publishes a periodic newsletter to its contributors.

    Pros

No kill shelter; do an excellent job on private contributions

    Cons

Not enough staff to mingle with those who come to see the animals.

  • 135. What a great shelter!

    by: 2LabsSue

Great shelter with a lot of dedicated volunteers. In need of a makeover. Caring people doing the best they can with limited funds, space, etc.

    Pros

    no-kill

    Cons

    older, needs make-over

  • 141. Really in need of that make-over!

    by: sam136

They offer some great public services like the spay/neuter clinics, shots, and information to pet owners about care, feeding, etc. The building is small, the reception area really small and cannot handle the traffic. I am sure there are maintenance issues with the buildings that aren't visable to the general eye. They definitely need the make-over and are deserving.\r\nOn the down side they miss several opportunities to place animals in good homes where the general criteria might not be completely met. Example: dogs that are clearly not house broken still cannot be adopted unless they have an inside home even if there is other shelter available, like a barn, garage or heated dog house. \r\n\r\n

    Pros

no kill shelter, good public service

    Cons

they either don't ask enough ?s, or too many of the adopters

  • 142. i love this place it is safe for the animals. i am 12 and i have been collecting food for them about 3 years. please vote because they really deserve this

    by: ztT4MP74594974

I think this is a nice place for animals. I am 12 years old and i have been collecting for them for about 3 years.I think they deserve this makeover because they work really hard to keep the place up and running. The people that work there really like to make sure the animals are safe. I know that they are treated niceley because i go there and walk them. they really need this makeover because they are out of room, for it is a no kill shelter. i really like this place and the peolpe that work there need the makeover but mostly the animals do. so please vote and make this a better place for the animals!

  • 143. Karing and Kind

    by: cheryliw

As with any shelter, there is never enough room. I think if they got a make over there were be enough room to hold open awareness meeting with the public in regards to what goes on here and what it takes to run a place. I work in the pet industry and it amazes me how many people talk about taking pets to the shelter like it is nothing, or how they get mad when they say they were unable to take their pet to the shelter because it is full. \nI think " imagine that" there are so many uneducated people trying to raise pets....

    Pros

they are truly dedicated to their cause

    Cons

they need more room to continue

    by: Ebiggs2994

The Washington Area Humane Society has a lot of animals, but the problem is they don't have enough room to hold them all. Three and four cats are forced to live together in very small cages. Winning this makeover would make a huge difference!

    Pros

    Cons

There are a lot of animals.

  • 147. A dedicated, hard working group of people

    by: SofiesDad

My wife and I have adopted all 3 of our pets (2 cats and a dog) from this shelter. The staff is very caring and dedicated to helping the less fortunate animals in our area. I especially like to follow up calls the shelter made after we had adopted our pets. It just shows how really dedicated the staff is to ensuring the pets are not just given a home, but given a good home.\r\n\r\nMy wife and I try to help out with cash, food and blanket donations, but this shelter needs a lot of renovations. A makeover would really help the shelter streatch out what I am sure is already a very tight budget. Thank you for all of your wonderful work. Good luck in the makeover.

    Pros

Very hard working, dedicated staff that cares a great deal about the welfare of the less fortunate animals in our area.

    Cons

This shelter is in bad need of repairs.

  • 150. You are doing a wonderful job

    by: Ladykbk

I love the fact that you do not euthanize for space, respond to abuse calls. You just need a nicer building \r\nto expand upon your mission.\r\n\r\nPlease help our area to change!!!\r\n\r\nMy own local shelter does not accept volunteers, they view them as a liability. my local shelter has had the same board president since the 70's. Is still reported to use gas, however I do not know for sure. does not adopt out bully breeds. I have actually driven to Pittsburgh when I found a stray staffordshire. Euthanizes all scared, shy cats. Adopts out intact animals. Has extremely limited hours. Has poor customer service etc etc.\r\nand also has no humane officer. they view that also as a liability.\r\n\r\ntrouble is: My local shelter is not the worst one.\r\n\r\nPlease help western pennsylvania to change.\r\n\r\nI HOPE YOU WIN!\r\n

    by: itsxxkayla

This shelter is overall rather decent. I have done volunteer work here before and loved working with the animals. The staff is also great and treats the animals as if they were family. I honestly think that this shelter deserves the makeover considering that it needs more space provided for the animals seeing that space is limited. \n\nIn the end I would give this shelter a 4.3\n<3

    Pros

    Cons

    Small and needs updated.

    by: nikkilynn96

I adopted my dog, Logan, a black lab mix, from WAHS in February of 2007. The vet estimated his age at 7 years old. Logan and I quickly became attached at the hip and I truly cannot imagine my life without him. He is the sweetest, most mild-mannered dog I have ever met. His tail never stops wagging. He is wonderful with children, LOVES to chase squirrels, and demands lots of attention. But I wouldn't give him up for the world. I will not hesitate to adopt from WAHS in the future.

    Pros

Volunteers always concerned for the welfare of the animals

    Cons

This shelter desperately needs increased space and new everything.

  • 161. Wonderful Shelter Worthy of a Makeover!

    by: cmb8280

The Washington Humane Society has helped my fiance and I so much by participating in a low-cost spay/neuter program for lower income families. We love our cats very much and, having 2 boys and 2 girls, needed to have them all fixed. The people at the Humane Society couldn't have been more friendly or helpful and their participation in the program has made it possible for us to afford to properly care for our pets. This makeover will hopefully make some much needed space so that they can provide care for more animals in our area that need shelter, love and help finding a good home. Thank you WAHS!

    Pros

    knowledgable, caring, helpful

    Cons

    too small!

    by: sydney15301

The WAHS use to have an amazing cat house. It was a house completly dedicated to cats. They cats were given the chance to roam free in their designated room. They had room to streatch and play and just be cats. This house was closed however because of lack of funds to keep it running. It would be awesome if this shelter could win this money to bring back this house that was completly dedicated to the adorable cats we all love.

What the WAHS provides these animals is a chance at a healthy happy life. The staff is to be commended for their hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly ect. dedication to keep it going. I would love to see the million dollar makeover go to the WAHS.

This shelter has worked very hard to stay at the top of the makeover contest. I would like to commend them for their hard work. They deserve a win. I am glad that the winning shelter is a no kill facility. I'm sure the makeover will be a blessing to them.

  • 182. Truly a miracle..

    by: kayleighann171

This Humane Society, found, saved, and gave to me, the best dog in the whole universe. I had always wanted a dog, but I had never known that a dog could mean as much to me, as this one does. His name is Chance, and I believe that we got him in August of 2002. At first he was very shy, because the Humane Society had believed that his previous owners had beat him, so we were very precautious and gentle with him, but now 6 years later, he is a lively playful canine. I truly do love him so much. And I thank that Humane Society for rescuing "my boy", and leading me into a world, I'd never believed, that a dog, could truly be, my best friend.\r\nSo please zootoo, help The Washinton Area Humane Society, the animals desperately need it. And the workers have put so much time and effort into this Humane Society, that they should finally get to see it payed off. Please, for all the animals they have saved and rescued, please, save & rescue the Washinton Area Humane Society.\r\n\r\nSincerely,\r\nKayleigh :]

    Pros

Very friendly staff, dogs are well taken care of, and if you have any questions they are very knowledgeable. :]

    Cons

The only con I can really think of is that, the community tries very hard to donate money and supplies, I know, I myself try very hard to donate something atleat every other month, but the shelter is in desperate need of help, they take in any animals they come across, even if they don't have the space, so please zoo too, help them get the space.

  • 183. Toby's from Here!

    by: elonce

We got our dog Toby from here. He was 9 months old when we got him and we were going with all intentions of getting an older mixed breed, from a shelter (as we already have a purebreed). I think all these shelter dogs just deserve another chance. I can not to this day tell you why our TOBY was left here! He is the kindest most loving dog ever. The people @ Wash Coun Humane Society suggested we bring in Roush for them to get familiar. How smart! Toby was scared of the big great dane @ first then we all soon realized who REALLY runs this house! Thanks WCHS for quite possibly our best dog ever!!! Everyone here was so helpful & kind!

    Pros

    Everything here is great

    Cons

Only bad thing is they DO need a makeover

  • 184. They really need help..

That is too long to have to wait for a new shelter, especially a no kill one! They can do so much good if they have a new shelter, more space for more animals is a good thing! \n\nNo kill is truly a great way to operate an animal shelter, that is how they say they really do love animals.

    Pros

They are a NO KILL shelter

    Cons

they need a serious shelter update, it's been what, 100 years?

  • 187. Very Special Place

    by: bobinwashpa

We just adopted our second pup from this shelter. Gracie (a shepherd, golden retriever mix) live to be almost 18 years old (she passed two months before her birthday). We now have a 3 year old bichon named Chips (short for Mr. Chips). The shelter was very helpful and very thorough in making sure I understood what I was getting into and that I could provide a safe, nurturing home for Chip. The staff are caring and committed. The shelter is ancient though. It is the same place I remember from my childhood say back about 30 years ago. \r\n\r\n

    Pros

Very helpful and caring staff. No kill shelter. Lots of space to walk dogs. Separate buildings for cats and dogs (I believe).

    Cons

needs more space. Very old facility

  • 188. What is this Shelter?

    by: sealthedeal06

So what is the WAHS? Picture this: You're on an afternoon drive with your child and figure it might be nice to stop at the local animal shelter in Eighty Four, PA to visit the animals. You, although being quite an animal lover, keep on insisting to your child that you already have enough pets (2 dogs and 2 cats). You walk through the front door and are immediately greeted by the warm smiles of volunteers and knowledgable staff. You go to see the puppies and wonder why they are in such small areas. It could be that the WAHS is a no-kill shelter no matter what; giving every animal a chance to be loved by someone like you. You come to the end of the long hallway of pups, and see the gleam of hope in a small, but mighty golden retrievers eyes. He has you hooked. Your child approaches the cage and gets his fingers licked by the lovable puppy whose just looking for a good home. You see the sadness in his eyes, and know that you cannot walk out the door that afternoon without purchasing the new dog, whether you have "too many pets" or not. For a price that comes nowhere close to emptying your wallet, you can own this wonderful dog that will bring joy to your family for years and years to come. You can also have the satisfaction of knowing that you saved him from being there for long periods of time like some such animals. It's a great feeling to have.\r\nTHAT'S the Washington Area Humane Society for ya :)\r\n\r\nI've done it and so can you. Anytime someone chooses to adopt a pet from the WAHS, this "gleam in the pets eye" gets them everytime and it becomes a lifetime bond between the owner and the pet, and it can sure as well happen to you too :)

    Pros

    Lovable staff and animals :)

    Cons

Not enough space :( We need a makeover!!!

    by: RosemarySullivan

This shelter is always very willing to help both the animals in their care and the people who come to them for animal adoptions, help with combatting animal abuse and for taking good care of all types of unwanted animals. \r\n\r\nThey collect aluminum cans, have lawn sales and particapate in other community events to raise money for the shelter which does not receive tax dollars but relies on donations and volunteers. They are A#1 in my book.

    Pros

    Friendly, likeable and very helpful.

    Cons

    Sometimes too busy

  • 195. If there were only more places like this . . .

    Cons

They need so much more - space, equipment, etc.

  • 196. My shelter

    by: khillcs

I get all my dogs from the Washington county humane society. My last adoption was a Min Pin with issues, when I first met him he was so scared and snarling at everyone. I assume he was abused by a man, because he doesn't like men at first. We have had him for over a year now and he is a wonderful dog. The staff helped me spend time with him and let my entire family meet him before we decided to adopt him. I am sure glad we did, although he has issues he is a wonderful addition to our family. I would never buy a dog from anywhere but our shelter. I tell everyone I know looking for a pet to please go to our shelter, and most have had luck with adopting a pet.

    Pros

    Cons

    I can't adopt them all

  • 197. Keep up the good work

    by: momof4boys

The WAHS is a great place to adopt a pet. We adopted our puppy Logan from them in October of 2006. They were very kind, helpful, honest and knowledgeable. They offer the shot services, the cash back if you attend a training class, spay/neuter, avid, and much more. I think that the staff does an excellent job especially given the fact that they have outgrown their facility. Stop by and check them out!

The Washington Area Humane Society continues to provide services to my hometown, and not just for animals.\n\nThere is an autistic boy from my school who has found employment at the Humane Society. These people have given him a chance to earn some money and more importantly, experience. Certainly they would have no problem hiring any other person, but their choice in this particular boy shows the compassion and dedication that is so evident in the entire establishment.

This shelter has really worked hard to gain as many points as it has. I do question its no kill shelter, since no shelter is a no kill shelter. by: TheDogLover1

WAHS has come a long way in 3 years. The new board is making some practical and sensible changes. The new manager and humane agents hired this year are working very hard to improve everything. \r\n\r\nThere have been shut downs by the state of some poor kennels and many of the animals went to WAHS.\r\nThe staff handled the large influx with calmness and competence. The animals were cared for and many placed into foster thanks to the very hard work of Jeannie S who is diligent in finding new foster homes to help out.\r\n\r\n

I love the Washington human society. When I was 8 (Im now 19) my family and I went to get a cat and a dog. I picked out a little black cat that is simply amazing. She crawls into bed everynight and even sneaks under the covers. My brother picked out a little boxer mix puppy. She was the best dog that we could ever have hoped for. She passed away about a year ago and is greatly missed. If it had not been for the Washington county human society we would not have found her. We are now searching for another dog and looking nowhere but there. I recommend that if you are looking for a pet you check out what they have to offer!

I have returned to the shelter on several occassions and am saddened by how the place looks now. The rescuers there have always been upbeat and hopeful. This is such a loving and caring environment for pets that are waiting for a home and second chance. When I visited the Washington Area Humane Society I was immediately struck by the dedicated and hard working staff. They treated each animal with kindness regardless of how many pets were in need of their assistance. The staff couldn't do enough for their furry friends with patience and boundless love. The shelter is in great need of enlarging and updating. The staff is a great example of people really loving what they do. I was quite impressed by this. by: dawn31

I got my dog Taylor there over 9 years ago! She was 10 weeks old when I got her and she was a foster puppy that one of the girls who volunteered there was working with. I truely appreciated her foster parent. She was house broken and knew to go to the door to let me know she had to go potty! Taylor was well behaved (as much as a puppy could be lol!) and was in excellent health. This was the first pet I had gotten on my own and it was a pleasure to have a place that cared for their animals and wanted the best for them. I love my Taylor. She is almost 10 years old now. She is still in excellent health, and has been the best dog anyone could want. I have 3 children who are growing up right along with her, and she is excellent with them. Thank You for providing a great service, and good luck! You deserve this!

    by: lorilovesdogs3

March 1, 2008. I took my 9 yr. old daughter to the Washington Co. Humane Society for the first time. She absolutely loves animals. (Especially dogs) Although we are unable to adopt another pet at this time, I wanted her to see just how devoted the WCHS and its volunteers are to finding loving homes for all of the animals in the shelter. While there we made a donation of items that were needed and really enjoyed our visit. Since our visit my daughter has decided that she is going to volunteer. She is going to stuff envelopes over the summer & whenever needed and I will be volunteering right along side of her. I am so proud of her decision to help such a wonderful organization. I hope that her story will prompt more people, both young and old, to volunteer their time. Even if your time is limited, every little bit counts.

We got our dog at WAHS in November of 2006. We still stop by to see if we can find a new friend for our dog and help them out by walking some of their dogs that they have now. They are helpful and knowledgeable and they truly care about the animals!!

I absolutely love this place. I have adopted three pets from there and the people there are always very helpful. I know they could use some funding to give the animals there what they need, I know the money would be put to good use. They struggled for years to keep the shelter "no-kill" and for that I respect the place. Good luck in the contest, hopefully I can be of some help.

  • 239. Simon

    by: tiffani

A little over a year ago, I got my dog Simon from the Washington Area Humane Society. He is a brat, but I love him more than anything. He is naked. He only has hair on his feet and on his head. He is a little strange looking but he is the sweetest dog. The staff was very nice and I believe they took very good care of him while he was there. When I was about to leave, a younger boy (a volunteer I think) came to say goodbye to him, and Simon loved him. He played with him. I almost felt bad taking him home. He knew his name and Simon showed more interest in him then anybody around. It showed me how well the staff cares and knows the animals there. I have never had a problem, and they welcome you to go back in the kennel and look at the dogs. Before you decide to take them home, they let you take the dog outside and get to know them a little better.

    Pros

    I found my best friend!!!

    Cons

The breed of the dog was off...

    Pros

The Staff loves the animals and really go out of their way to come up with new ideas to help them, I loved the Christmas angel tree for the animals!

    Cons

Money... the staff is really ambitious, but there is not enough money to always do what they would like

  • 243. Washington Area Humane Society NEEDS YOUR HELP!

    by: SuprMan07

I have done community service there and going to be going there this month to do more community service for them. The people at the facility are great. They are very kind with the pets and to the people. I would recommend this place for everyone to check out see what animals they have or even ways for you to help them! The times I have been there the facility is very clean and every one there knows a lot about the animals that they are dealing with. This make over would help them greatly and I think by coming on here and dedicating some time to this to help them win is a huge help that any one can do!

  • 251. Washington Area Humane Society Needs Our Help

    by: ladybus306

I visited this shelter for the first time last year when I was looking to adopt another dog. When my daughter and I walked into the shelter, I was a bit surprised. It is an old shelter that is desperately in need of repairs, updating and space. We had just left Animal Friends and the Western PA Humane Society which were nice, newer facilities. My first thought was "how sad for the animals"?? Then we began talking to one of the volunteers there. She was kind, caring and ever so helpful. She showed us around, we visited with the dogs and the MANY cats they have upstairs. They didn't have any smaller dogs at that time but she offered me assistance in finding one through Angels for Animals. Without their help, I never would have found our Sophie. You see the point I am trying to make is that these volunteers care about animals....all animals. They want what is best for the animals and future owners. Although they didn't have a small dog for us to adopt, they realized our sincere love for animals and helped us find a dog elsewhere. This shelter deserves to have a makeover. The volunteers deserve to have a nice, warm, comfortable working environment and MOST IMPORTANTLY the animals that are waiting to find homes deserve a nice facility that is spacious, clean and comforting. After all, they are a no kill shelter and for many "this is home". \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Cons

  • 259. wahs

    by: beccalee8

I am very familiar with wahs. I have three cats and three dogs. One of my dogs came from a breeder and two of my cats were taken in from the outdoors. I adopted my border collie/german shepherd mix, my tabby cat, and my terrier mix from this shelter. I am very pleased with their adoption process and certianly their no kill policy. I am aware of the flooding of the cat castle so their cats and kittens are now moved upstairs. Wahs could really use a renovation but help and donations are needed for that. I take food and litter there as often as i can to donate. They take wonderful care of their animals but i would really like to see a new facility or renovation be done to better the animals who temporarily reside there. I love wahs and they are always on my number one list if im looking to adopt again.

    Pros

They are both wonderful. Belle came home first she is a three year old Lab/pitt mix and just bonded with our oldest daughter. They are always together. by: verholtz

I was employed by the Washington Area Humane Society. The staff were hard working and knew so much about animals. The vet techs were awesome. They taught me alot of important information and that I now carry with me and my own business Mary Beth's Pet Sitting. The vet's that come in a do all the surgeries are great and so loving to all animals. Even in the worst cases I have seen and had to work with the vet tech with the animal was always given so much love and treated with respect. The job is hard and is so rewarding. I treasure all the moments with all the animals and the staff. God bless all the staff for all your hard work and If any shelter needs this makeover hands down it would be ours!!!! \r\n\r\nSincerely\r\n\r\n\r\nMary Beth Verholtz

  • 271. Washington Humane Society-Shelter dog happy life for him and his family

    by: bbarnes84

I can remember going to the Humane society for at least 50 years. They have always depended on donations and do so much with so little. \r\n While living in the country I had to take many stray kittens and puppies to the Humane Society. Many "dumb" people thought the animals would be happy living on a farm- they failed to ask the "farmer". The staff always comforted my grief in the cruelty of people that abondon animals. I would leave a donation and say a prayer for the shelter animals.\r\nIn 1992 when my friend who had never had a dog in his life expressed interest in giving a "pound puppy" a home, I directed him to the Washington Humane Society. There he met Frisco- a black male cocker spaniel about 2 years of age. It was love at first sight. His daughter , age 13 finally had a dog to love and share her life with too. They changed his name to Dogless and he lived happily ever after. It was with great sadness in Nov. 1999 that Dogless took his last ride to the vet. The dog lived his life in the "lap of luxury " and a famies life was enriched by the unconditinal love of a "pound puppy".

    Pros

Very dedicated staff and volunteers - great community support

    Cons

There is never enough funding when if comes to taking care of neglected and stray cats and dogs, along with meeting the needs of farm animals that are neglected and abused

  • 272. People speaking out for one that can not speak for them selfs

    by: bikerax

The Washington County Human Society has done great things with the shelter, by adding the cat house, making it a no kill shelter, the staff is great and has a lot of heart in doing what they do for these animals without people like the one that give there time to help these animals who would they have to count on.

    Pros

That it is a no kill shelter and there are people trying to get these animals homes

    Cons

That there are not enough people to help these animals out

  • 273. Great place to adopt a pet

    by: clabash

I started volunteering at the humane in September because I have always wanted to volunteer here since I was a little child. There is something about this humane society that always captivated me as a child and made me believe that helping animals was something I always wanted to do. The volunteers are so passionate about the animals and the staff is always pleasant and cooperative. There are always many cars parked outside and many people waiting to adopt a new pet. Plus, the location is great because there is a great place next door with awesome ice cream.

    Pros

    No Kill shelter, passionate volunteers

    Cons

needs a bigger shelter (a makeover would be great)

  • 274. Great Animal Shleter

    by: JMTB

This is a great animal shelter. The staff is friendly, courteous, patient & knowledgeable. God bless them for their never ending love and dedication to the animals. They deserve to win the Shelter Makeover Contest as they have a great need. I visit the shelter often and am always amazed at how busy they are! Such a variety of things going on at any given time -- yet they handle everything so efficiently & calmly. My husband & I are always giving monetary donations or gifts of food, etc. The staff is always so gracious & thankful to us, when we are the ones who are forever thankful to them for all their kindness to the animals. They deserve our gratitude as it is a very special group of people who can face the heartbreak & stressful situations they face everyday. We have adopted a dog and cat from them and found both adoptions to be efficient and professional. The staff handled the adoptions on a very personal level. Washington Co. is very lucky to have this shelter & I think the people of this area should become more involved in helping them in any way they can. Remember if you're not part of the solution - your're part of the problem.

    Pros

    A "no-kill" animal shelter.

    Cons

    None so far

    by: BestBuddies5

I was out to the shelter on 2/17/08 to have my dog spayed, thru a clinic that they do. The staff was very good with the dogs/cats, and insured their owners they would be ok. If you didn't have a carrier to put your dog /cat into when you picked them up, they provided one for you. They are there to help, and if people would just think,( I can't care for this dog/cat then take them to the Humane Society,) instead of just leaving it to starve, or miss treating them

    Pros

    They Have Big Hearts

    Cons

    Not enough room

  • 279. WAHS

    by: briidgett

The Washington Area Humane Society is overall great. It is a no kill shelter, for the exeption of animals that have to be put down, because they are too sick. Also, if an animal is not behaved well enough, they will send it to another NO KILL shelter. At WAHS, the animals come first. They will not let a pet be adopted into a family that will not care for it like a family member, which it is. Also, they will confiscate an animal from their owner if they are abusing it, not feeding it, or not providing shelter. They will get this persons approval and signature first, of course, and if the person refuses, they will then take them to court and legally confiscate the animal from them. The only con to WAHS is that they barley have any money to buy nessesary needs for the shelter, but they pull it off somehow, with their own time and money. The county does not provide them with money. Their only income is when they donate to themselves, or private donations, from schools or other places/people. My school has just recently given them a fairly large sum of money, which they graciously appriciate. Because of their not wealthy condition, they REALLY need to win this contest. They deserve and need to win, so everyone VOTE FOR THEM!!! It's the right choice!!

    Pros

    Too Many

    Cons

    Not wealthy at all

  • 280. Visit to the shelter

    by: denver

I was visiting the animal shelter last week, I use to walk dogs there many years ago. I was so impressed when I walked in and was acknowledged with a hello. I walked into the dog area and was amazed at how clean the kennels were and how quiet the dogs were. I thought to myself they must be content. Volunteers were walking each dog and each kennel had clean blankets and toys and treats. I remembered that when I was a dog walker there about 10 years ago it was not like this. It is the same facility but more care is being taken. I think any animal shelter deserves a new building, but I know from personal experience that the Washington County Humane Society is very deserving of a new shelter makeover. The work staff and volunteers have been at their best, now it is time for the building to be too.

    Pros

    Very friendly staff

    Cons

None, maybe too many animals that need homes

  • 281. The love of my life.

    by: EliseAnn

The Washington Area Humane Society is where I found the love of my life. His name was Benjy, a mixed breed pup, and my parents got him when I was still in Middle School. He was the most loving animal I've ever had the opportunity to know in my life, on such a personal level. He was my best friend. Benjy died on the first of this new year. He died on our living room floor with everyone around him. He went very peacefully. \n\nWithout the Humane Society, I would have never gotten to enjoy such a kind and compassionate animal in my life. I want that shelter to be around forever so I will always have the place where I found my love. And that way, others as well, can have the same success as myself with finding such an amazing animal to adopt.\n\nThe shelter has been nothing but kind and helpful every time I've visited. I took my cat Stanley there to get neutered, and he came back in great condition.

    Pros

Friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, no kill shelter.

    Cons

    Very small area.

  • 282. Struggling shelter doing the best they can

    Cons

Way too small to accommodate the animals

They said she needed a good loving home to fatten her up. Well, she got that. When I'm ready for anther animal I will go back to the shelter.

    by: jessjo04

The employees really care about the animals. I worked there a few months and I could see how much the animals are loved. The dogs get treats and walks. Both cats and dogs have clean cages everyday. The facility seems dirty becuase it is old, they desperately need a makeover. People may not be the friendliest, but they're not all people-people, theyre animal-people. They do great work for the animals and I highly suggest visiting them, as a previous employee and an adoptive mother of a cat from there.

    Pros

People care about the animals very much.

    Cons

    Old facility.

  • 290. Great Shelter!

    by: Yiannis

WAHS is an outstanding shelter. I have adopted two kittens recently and the experience was outstanding. The staff was knowledgable and obviously quite caring. They followed up the adoption a few weeks later with a call to check on the kittens. They work dilligently to get all animals adopted into good homes and they are NO KILL.\r\nThe shelter really needs many upgrades to keep up with how busy they are. It is funded through donations only so they do not have the means to make the much needed improvements.\r\nI Highly recommend this organization.\r\n

    Pros

Caring, giving volunteers. NO KILL SHELTER!

    Cons

Run down facility. Not enough space for the needs of the community

  • 291. Nice shelter

    by: Carly007

After adopting Baily there he had a bit of a cough... they called me to tell me that they wanted to look at Baily because they felt he may be antibodics. Even my vet overlooked the need for them and shorty after Bailys cough had finally subsided... I can't thank them enough for their professionalism and concern. I love that place.

Super friendly staff... just a great place where you can feel the love for the animals.

    Cons

    None to speek of.

  • 295. Working so hard with what they have!

    by: callmar

I actually "found" the Shelter through ZooToo. Our local paper ran a few stories about it and I realized that it was closer to my home than I had thought. I went out and signed up to be a Dog Walker and Cat Cuddler. I haven't been able to coordinate with the "trainer" who will clear me for Dog Walking but I spent some time upstairs in their "Cat Castle". These little guys are kept very clean and are well fed and supplied with as much comfort as possible while they are "interviewing" with people to take them to their Forever Homes. The physical building is old and small, but kept very clean and maximized for productive use. This shelter really deserves to be the Million Dollar Winner in the contest. They would do such Good Things with the money! Please consider supporting Washington Area Humane Society. I look forward to helping out there a lot in this coming season!

    Pros

It's a clean and "happy" place for these Unfortunates who've yet to find their Forever Homes

    Cons

The physical plant is old and small. They need a big Monetary Infusion to be able to maximize the good they do the animals.

    by: PegSinclailr

I adopted my kitten at the Washington Humane Society several years ago and she is wonderful!! There was a description and photo available for each pet and it provided information from the fostor family that previously cared for her. This information told about her ability to relate to other cats/dogs and things she liked to do. The staff was very accommodating and knowledgable and Puffin has proved to be a wonderful addition to my family.

  • 299. Wonderful volunteers

    by: Martin

The volunteers are working under some very difficult circumstances in an old building that is in need of constant upkeep. The animals are lovingly cared for by all the volunteers. This shelter is truly a "shelter" for all the homeless pets who go there, but they need, and deserve, a revitalization.

Wonderful volunteers who are thrilled when one of their "quests" is adopted into a loving home.

    Cons

  • 300. Dedicated staff - most caring people you'll ever meet!!

    by: AnneM

Washington Area Humane Society is well known in the area for all the great work they do to help homeless animals, provide treatment, vaccinations, educate the public, etc, etc, etc, The list goes on and on, HOWEVER I have become aware of how many more things they could do if there was more money available to improve their facility. I sure hope they get the shelter makeover, because there is not a more deserving one in America.

    Pros

This shelter has knowledgeable, caring staff, and wonderful adoptees ready for new homes.

    Cons

    by: dkc

11 years ago this spring my husband and I stopped at the Washington Area Humane Society to just look at the dogs and ended up bringing home the sweetest little (well she was then!) puppy. She has been a big part of this family since then, watching our kids grow up and move away. When she was 4 she had a large kidney tumor that we had to have removed along with a kidney, but she is doing great. This shelter takes in all kinds of animals and cares for them until someone is willing and able to take them home for good. I hope that everyone will visit this shelter for their next pet so that more "unwanted" animals can find a loving home.

    by: JDanglers

The people that make up this shelter are great! They neutered my dog for around $50, and an animal hospital wanted $250! This shelter consists of people who just want to help animals, plain and simple. They care more about the animals than themselves in many cases. This facility could use an update and some new equipment and cages.

    Pros

Great Shelter! Very nice, Knowledgable, helpful!

Washington Area Humane Society works hard to care for and place all the animals turned over to them.\r\nIt would be great to see them win this makeover to further help their cause. Hi, I am writing as an independent volunteer for the WAHS. I have been involved with the shelter for years as an outside fundraiser. I have organized Ride for Rescues, Equestrian Fun Days, and more recently a Haunted Judged Trail Ride. At all these events WAHS volunteers brought dogs to hang out and hopefully get adopted. I enjoy making money for them, as a replacement for not being able to adopt all the dogs.... I look forward to future fund raising for them. I have even signed up for a class to learn more about fund raising. Love the animals.\nI have a personal goal of someday starting a spay and neutering clinic, because I don't want to just help get dogs adopted, but prevent the overwhelming litters from being born...

    by: donnacyoung

We will always remember with great fondness this facility, where we found our first family pet. Haley, a golden retriever mix was just 4 months old, and stole my heart immediately! True to the info given about her, she was already crate trained, great with infants & children, & great with other pets. Her mother was reported to have been a full-bread golden, while info on father was not known. As she grew, we came to believe that she was very likely mixed with an Irish Setter, as she had darker reddish fur, which was longer & more wavy than a golden's, a longer snout & longer legs & leaner body. She helped to raise our two children, and lived to almost 13! In fact, she lived 3 yr longer than anticipated, even with Diabetes, requiring 2 shots of insulin each day. She was extremely smart - reminding us if we forgot to give her the insulin shot! We will always love her, and cont to miss her dearly! We had to put her down 2 yrs ago, when she just could no longer walk.

    by: ztT4MP20408832

I would love to see WAHS win the makeover, to improve the physical site of the buildings and grounds. It would be great to have some trails bulldozed to provide flatter, safer surfaces on which to walk the dogs, rather than worrying about falling on uneven terrain, or having the dogs fur get caught in briar bushes. Flatter surfaces may encourage older persons to walk the dogs, knowing they are less likely to turn their ankle or trip on tree/ weed roots. The sloping grounds can become very soggy, as it is reported that WAHS sits atop old leechbeds, which become saturated in wet weather. The dogs would benefit from more outdoor pens, so that visitors could take them there to become better acquainted. Even better would be outdoor runs with shelter areas, for use in inclement weather. It would be great to be able to afford these animals the climate such as is offered at Animal Friends of Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, we lack the quantity of funds needed to complete such a project. However, none of this deters the volunteers from donating their time and money, their sewing skills, their vehicles to transport animals to places where we hope they will be adopted, and some phenomenal organizational skills, to give these animals some love, attention, and increased outdoor space, for which they are extremely grateful. If sufficient monies ever became available, I would love to see the shelter relocate to flatter grounds. Although the terrain does not usually deter the dogs, it does have an impact on the volunteers' capabilities to ambulate/run on the uneven surfaces and sometimes very slippery grounds. I would also love to see the shelter acquire some motorized treadmills, to assist in walking more dogs in very inclement weather. I am very grateful to all the volunteers at WAHS, for it shows that many people do love these animals, and truly work very hard to help them adjust and get adopted. My personal goal is to better learn techniques such as are employed by Cesar Millan, as I feel it would help in getting the dogs adopted more quickly ( it is very difficult to encourage someone to adopt a very hyperactive dog, or one that clearly needs better social skills with other animals). I hope that people will see WAHS for the animals and the dedication of the volunteers, rather than simply focusing on the physical site.

  • 357. WAHS staff & volunteers ROCK!

    by: cathie09

I have been a volunteer at the shelter for three years and have seen it come a long way in those three years. From the dedicated staff to the unending energy of the volunteers, the animals at WAHS are given the love and caring they so desperately need at this point in their lives. While many improvements have been made at the shelter, they have been done piece-meal and a major one-time makeover would make life so much better for the dogs, cats and other animals that need our help. We truly NEED this makeover so this great work can help more animals.

    Pros

The staff & volunteers truly care about the animals

    Cons

We need more room so we can help more animals!

My parents neighbor a couple of years back was mistreating his dog. Leaving him tied up outside in the dead of winter with a frozen water bowl.\n\nThe staff of this Humane Society came and got the dog. Then she cared for him for weeks like he was her own. And he was a huge dog. She took him to her house and kept him for a while because the shelter was so full. \n\nThey are awesome people and a great organization.

I used to volunteer for the shelter and loved it, had them in my home during Christmas In the Village a festival we have in our town so they could take donations and sell things. I have been very happy with their service and happy with my beloved pets that I adopted from there. Many have passed on but they had long lives and were loved. \r\nThis shelter deserves this makeover and I am hoping with help they will get it. \r\nDiane Huggins forever friend to the Washington County Humane Society

    by: griam01

I love the WAHS. We have adopted several cats from the shelter, most recently my 2 boys - Rummy and Ozzy (father and son) for Christmas. Michelle, a volunteer at the shelter said that they were the best boys there and she was right. She convinced my husband to get 2 babies, instead of one. :)\r\n\r\nI have donated several pieces of large office equipment to the shelter to help assist in all that they do.\r\n\r\nI love this shelter and the fact that they are a no kill shelter just shows the dedication that they have for the animals.\r\n\r\nThank you for all you do for all the animals!!!

  • 370. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!

    by: KMZ0819

Three years ago, at a very difficult point in my life, I decided that I needed some pet therapy. At the time, I lived on my own in Carnegie, PA and was not allowed pets. One random Saturday morning, I picked up the phone book, and looked up Animal Shelters. I chose the Washington Area Humane Society because it was in Eighty-Four PA, not far from where I worked in Cannonsburg. I got dressed and drove out there. I visited with the dogs, and wandered over to the cat house. Warmly greeted at the door, the volunteers explained everything - how the cats were kept, where they were, etc.\r\n\r\nI walked into the first room and talked with the mother and son vounteers there, all the while getting my feline nourishment. In the second room, there was a chair. I sat down, and immediately had a cat in my lap. If you're a cat person, you know how healing that can be. As the cat that was in my lap moved on, and I glanced down at my purse on the floor. There was this tiny black face staring up at me - and sitting in my bag saying, "Mama, can we go home?" At the time her name was Casey. She hopped into my lap, purred like mad, and slept for 25 minutes - ten minutes past closing time. I told her I'd be back for her if I could, and went home that night and wrote my landlord a letter. He called me the next afternoon and told me to hurry up and get back out there so I could bring her home.\r\n\r\nIsis came home with me that Sunday. I can't thank the kind volunteers at the Washington Humane Society enough for bringing me together with not only my saving grace, the true extension of my personality - my baby girl, but for staying open just an extra 10 minutes that Saturday afternoon so Isis could continue to sleep in my lap. She's been doing it ever since!\r\n\r\nThank you for all you do (and don't even know it)!!

    Pros

    Fantastic Staff!!

    Cons

I don't live in the area anymore!!

    by: ajs628

I saw the story on the news yesterday about all the animals that were rescued. My heart hurt when I saw all those puppies that were so skinny and malnutritioned. I am sending the website to everyone that i know that loves animals.

    Cons

  • 372. My first visit

    by: sgcoquet

I had a cat that was abandoned at our house in the country and was living in a groundhog hole. Although the shelter was maxed out in their space, they still took this cat in. They were very helpful and friendly.

    by: KD2207

I don't live too far away from this shelter and I think it is awesome they are a no kill shelter and do all they can for animals! I have an adopted cat and I would be completely heartbroken if she would have ended up at a non- no kill shelter and I hadn't gotten to her first...she is a little blessing.

    Cons

    Too small

    by: phoenix87

I have volunteered for them in the past when I was younger, and they were amazing. It is such a nice, friendly place for people to adopt new members to their family. If you are looking to expand your family with a new animal, please go to the Washington Area Humane Society and see all the loving animals just waiting for the chance to show you how much love they have to offer.

    Pros

friendly animals, nice service, affordable prices

    Cons

  • 376. Compassionate & caring!

    by: chikkie55

Washington Area Humane Society has been around for as long as I can remember. I have adopted many animals there, and am a former Board member and volunteer cat cuddler. These are some of the most caring people I have ever met, and they will do anything, I mean anything, to help these animals. Their Humane Officer rescues animals from bad situations and brings them to the shelter for veterinary attention, recovery, and eventual adoption. Just today there was a story in the newspaper about this. The animals are well cared for by a knowledgeable staff and many, many wonderful, loving volunteers. Because they are a no-kill shelter, when space runs out they are not able to take in any more. This is very sad because the animals may then end up in a kill shelter or just abandoned by the side of the road. WAHS has a strong presence in the county and needs to be able to take care of these animals. It is run solely on donated funds and has had some lean years lately. I am overjoyed to see that it is doing so well in the contest, and pray that they win the shelter makeover. It is unfortunate that all of the shelters cannot win, as I know they are all deserving. But WAHS is close to my heart and I wish them success and a beautiful new shelter! Go WAHS!!!

    Pros

No-kill shelter, animals very well cared for

    Cons

No-kill means less space to take in needy animals

  • 377. This place is great

    by: nancyjandeliza

I have gotten cats there before. The room is a little cramped or there are just too many unwanted animals. They provide alot of initial information about your animal and can also speak of their personalities. I've also used their Clinic services to get vaccinations for my two new ones. So far so good. It's hard to reach them by phone becasue they are busy, but they always have returned my phone call.

    Pros

  • 382. A Review of Washington County Humane Society

    by: lynngigler

I adopted 2 kittens from Washington County and they had been glued to a board and thrown out of a\r\ncar window. Someone saw it and brought the kittens\r\nto the shelter. With the volunteers help and hard work they were able to free the kittens by shaving off their fur. If it were not for these compassionate people I don't think the kittens would have mad it and been as healthy and happy from the trauma they experienced.\r\nThe center deserves to have a makeover and has tried to raise money in the past to enlarge their shelter. It is very small and with a new shelter they could could fit more animals in and wouldn't have to turn any away which I don't think they do anyway.\r\nPlease give these hard working people the new building that they deserve.

    Pros

    very caring volunteers

    Cons

The center is to small and not enough room for all the animals they want to accomodate

  • 383. My local shelter

    by: 8critters

This is the only free-standing shelter in a very large, rural southwestern PA county. This shelter has been making the best of their situation ever since I can remember. The staff are very dedicated, as evidenced by the fact that the work is hard and the pay is low, but they stay. They take animals from the public and from animal control, and do what is best for each animal all the time. All but 2 of my 8 pets are from this shelter. I once worked there, and after, worked at larger city shelters that had more money, nicer facilities, more programs and advantages, but never matched the people or the care I saw at this shelter. They truly care about progressing in a way that helps the animals.

    Pros

Service to our county for over 50 years

    Cons

Badly needs an updated facility for the animals

  • 384. Chase

My brother got his dog Chase from here around 5 years ago... He's one of the biggest, baby \r\nBlack Labradors I've ever seen... He loves children, and people in general, and is one of the most well-trained and behaved animals I've ever dealt with... You just have to disregard the occassional "goose" he gives you to say Hello... Great facility, and wonderful people....

    Pros

    Great, Caring Staff

    Cons

Not enough space to help all animals in need

  • 385. Volunteering

    by: PeytonHull

i volunteered at the humane society for quite awail now, and i love it. The staff taught me soo much about the cats , which is where i mainly help with, i absolutly love watching each animal go to a nice home, and each owner adopt a nice pet. They are a no-kill shelter, and the staff all bond with the animals, and help to be sure they are adopted into a happy, loving, safe home. since the washington area humane society is a no kill shelter, things tend to get packed and the cats begin to run out of room causing waiting lists, to surrender a pet, a makeover would really help create space,so they can take in more animals. I love the washington area humane society

    by: cbmalet

Last year when I was looking for a tuxedo kitty I was incontact with the shelter. They were very eager to listen to what I was loking for in a pet. Although they did not have any Tux kitties at the time they told me to feel free to keep contacting them that there was always a possibility one would show up. My kitty did not come from there but the staff was very friendly and showed they care about the animals!

    Pros

caring, hard working concern for animals

    Cons

  • 387. Washington County's Sanctuary

    by: lksix

I did some volunteer work here recently for the first time and I was very touched to say the least. The staff was amazing. The care and devotion they exhibited showed the true commitment they had to the animals. It takes a very special person to work and volunteer here. Although this is a no-kill shelter, I cried for 4 days after volunteering here. I just can't understand how un-loyal and uncaring people can be. All of these animals deserve to be in loving homes and the staff and volunteers at WAHS is that temporary loving home. The facilities are not in the best of shape. It is a donations only shelter and apparently they have to prioritize the small amount of money they receive. It would be a blessing to receive a make-over and I pray every day that they receive such a well deserved break.

    Pros

    No Kill

    Cons

    Crowded

  • 388. Great shelter

    by: Ryna

This is not about me but about my In laws, They had to put there dog down on New Years eve. They had this dog 13 years, they loved this dog and he loved them. They have been so saddened by this loss and I tried to encourage them to get another when the time was right. To make a long story short my mother in law received a call to go to a house and visit an 11 month old lab. When we arrived we new immediately that this dog would be to much for them to handle do to its size and so much energy and his ability to leap taller than Michael Jordan from a standing position. After I mentioned to my faher in law my thoughts he decided to that it would not be a good match. On the way home to Charleroi from North Versailles I mentioned to him about going to the Washington County Shelter, at first he was reluctant as he felt bad we could not take the other dog. I told him I would show him where it was at and he could ride there at his convience to see what was available. Once we entered it was all over, he saw the cuttest Lab and springer Spaniel mix and fell instantly in love. We told the staff that we would like the dog, they filled out the neccessary paper work and we were on our way. I just wanted to thank the staff for everything they did as this has made my father in law so proud and happy again, its like he has a new baby. My hats off to your staff, and again my thanks for being there to bring a smile on my father in laws face. There names are Frank & RynaMae Culbusky and they couldn't be prouder, I only hope that when I pass and have to return to earth as a dog I hope they will be my owners, as they take such good care of there animals.\r\nHis new name is Mason, and I think he thinks he died and went to heaven. He seems so contented and Happy. \r\n\r\nAgain my thanks\r\nJohn Harapko

    Pros

    by: bridgie1

The staff is wonderful. They are knowledgable caring, and deciated people. They also are one of the few shelters in the area that investigate animal cruelty or neglect. The location of the shelter is prime with it being several minutes from I-70 and it being located on Route 136. I cant say enough about this shelter. A woman I work with recently adopted a dog from the shelter and had nothing but praise for the staff and the experience she had.

    Pros

The staff, no kill shelter, location

    Cons

    needs some more space

  • 394. The treatment of the cats was phenomenal!!!

    by: miztered

The day my family and I visited over a year ago, we went just to look! We were looking for a cat since we had recently lost one we had for a very long time. I knew as soon as we went in and saw how nice they treated their cats we wouldn't be going home without a new member of our family. Our LunaBelle picked us as soon as she saw us. As we were looking around, their were cats being groomed and nails clipped and were spoken to so nicely. This lady even showed us how to take care of Luna properly. She spoke to my children kindly and wanted to ensure this was the cat that would work for us. About two weeks later the shelter contacted us to make sure all was well with Luna and if we had any questions. We had the best experience and we are truely enjoy Luna.Thank you Washington Humane for all you did for Luna before we had her and all you did for us!

    Pros

I have never been to a shelter that visible cared about everyone of the pets. These animals are members of a family.

    Cons

Seemed like they were bursting at the seams. They could really use more room.

  • 396. Major Improvements!!!

    by: chimchimtim

Hats off to everyone at WAHS who has worked so hard over the years to improve this shelter by leaps and bounds. When I first began to visit the shelter, probably some 10 years ago or more, it was still practicing euthanizing dogs and had a horrible feeling of impending doom about the place. It was dimly lit and the dogs had a hopelessness about them. Now, there is an entirely new feeling at the shelter. There are constant improvements in the landscaping as well as inside the building. So wonderful to see the play areas where these shelter dogs are allowed to run and play with the staff and volunteers. The staff is welcoming and cheerful even though usually overwhelmed by visitors. The place is always kept clean and the dogs are VERY well cared for. When I visit the shelter now, you really believe that each and every dog will find a home.

    hard working staff

    Cons

    limited parking

  • 398. Best area animal shelter

    by: rebekah6955

I have adopted multiple animals fromthe Washington Area Humane Shelter. Our current dog Rascal came from there. She is the smartest dog that I have ever had. The staff has allways been very helpful and they seem to really care about the animals. The con that is associated with this shelter is they only have room for about 30 dogs at a time. They have often been forced to not be able to accept new animals. I know that this must break the hearts of these caring staff members. I knowm that they would like to be able to help any animal who is in need.

    Pros

    friendly serivce

    Cons

Non enough room for all the animals in need.

    by: janpini

We selected a lovely domestic medium hair tabby seven month old kitten. She had been injured in a car accident and rather than amputate her leg, the shelter vets tried to save it. At this point, you'd never know she was even injured. She's a loving cat that dashes around madly and holds her own with our 18 pound Maine Coon.\r\n\r\nThank you Washington Area Humane Society for taking Abby in (renamed Libby by our family).\r\n\r\nJan Pini

    by: ztT4MP41677167

We adopted Spider and Diva about a year ago from the shelter. The staff was very helpful and did a follow up to see how they had adapted to their new home. I would recomend this shelter to anyone who wants to find the perfect pet for them.

    Pros

    Cons

The shelter may not know the history of the animal.

I owe all the happiness in my life to the Washington Area Humane Society! When I was very young, my family decided to go here to get my first dog. The staff there was a great help. They helped us get all her shots and papers in order so we had her within two days! She is an amazing dog. My whole family thought we could never find another dog as good as her, but then we found a second dog wandering the streets, starving. The Washington Area Humane Society did everything in their power to help us find him a good place to live, but unfortunately, they didn't have enough room to keep him. We took him in and absolutely fell in love with him! He is my best friend, and I owe it all to the Washington Area Humane Society!

    by: STOOPSRCOOL14

This shelter is wonderful. I honestly believe it is one of the best, it's no kill and has a great staff. I always keep them at the top of my list for adopting a pet, or giving up a pet if i am put in a situation where i have to. I know they will do their best to keep my pet happy, and take care of him or her.\r\nPlease consider this shelter if you must give up a pet, or need help taking care of a pet. :)!

I got my cat Charlie neutered at the Washington County Humane Society. It was very cheap and the staff was so friendly. I would recommend this place to anybody!\r\n\r\nNow I find myself donating goods just so that my little sister and I can take a peek at all of the cats there! Its so sad so see so many sheltered animals but they are taken care of without a doubt. I would absolutely love to see them win a makeover. My sister & I just happened to stop one day at the shelter & found the most wonderful & careing people tending to the very special animals with a lot of love to give. \r\n We were in the process of writting our second cookbook & wanted to donate some of our profits to a needy organization. As soon as we walked in you could feel the love & careing that is there & our minds were made up! This is where to make our donation. Our cookbooks, "Hey, Good Lookin' What's Cookin?", has been selling there for about a year & the proceeds from the sale at the shelter are their's to keep. I have got both our dogs there. My first one, Sam (Samantha) has sinced passed but she was the coolest dog. Now we have Shy and she is the coolest dog. I wouldn't go anywhere else to get a dog...they have cats too, but we don't have any cats. Our dogs are not real fond of cats....well actually they love them and I'll stop the joke there. But if you want to get a puppy or a dog, PLEASE go to the WCHS. Give an unwanted dog a home. The staff there will be happy to set you up with a cool dog like Shy....or Sam.

Both my mother and I have adopted all our dogs from Wahs. Some of our cats have come from there also. The staff is always very friendly and helpful. They let you take the dogs outside to walk them around, so you can see if it's the right one for you before you adopt. The cat sanctuary they have right next door is also a wonderful building. It is so nice to be able to walk into a room where the cats are able to move around freely instead of being in a cage. It would be wonderful if wahs got the shelter makeover, so they could maybe make the same type of building for the dogs.\r\n

  • 423. "Shelter away from Home"

    by: enve1166

From the time I could walk I always wanted a dog. For the first 10 years however I was very allergic. My Dad always told me that I needed to build up my tolerance...Sooo, every week we would visit the shelter and I would pick one dog out and play with them in the yard. Until one day, I picked out a little black lab puppy mix to play with. We ran around and played together for at least an hour or so, and to my suprise I wasn't allergic and unknown to my Dad I had also fallen in love. We left her there that day and I cried the whole way home. I wanted her so bad. My Dad told me I just wasn't ready. The next day I went to school and when I came home, the little thing came running out of the house on her leash and into my arms. Her name was Maggie and she was the greatest gift anyone could have ever given me. She was sooo lovable and gentle. She loved to help my Mom UnPlant flowers, lol. Maggie unfortunately died 6 years later and to this day I just can't get over her being gone. It's true when they say, you can never replace a pet! The moral to my story though is that this Shelter really cares. They dealt with me on a weakly basis, one dog after another, after another. They helped me to overcome my allergic reaction to dogs and for that I am forever greatfull. The staff had the patience and consideration to work with me and teach me so much. Since Maggie I have had 2 other dogs, one of which was from my cousins dog's litter, she was an itty bitty maltese named Mocha and my current puppy love, Munchie. We rescued Munchie from another shelter closer to our home after we heard his story. A family member works for the local ASPCA and due to the number in his litter, they had to send the 7 dogs to a larger shelter. If it wasn't for the size, they would have gone to WAHS. I know it really doesn't matter what shelter you rescue an animal from, as long as you love them and take care of them, but anytime I am in search of a pet, I will always visit my "Shelter away from Home".

    Pros

    Patient, Caring

    Cons

    Size - Too Small

  • 424. Glad You Have The Spay/Neuter Clinics

    by: richandcarolyn

We've rescued 3 cats in 10 years. All of them have been spayed/neutered at WAHS with absolutely no problems. About 17 years ago, I was a volunteer for Pet Therapy and took puppies to local nursing homes to brighten people's lives. I enjoyed it so much, but became too busy to continue after a few years. I hope to some day find a Golden Retriever at the shelter to add to our family...my cats might have something different to say about that, though! Good Luck and I will smile big smiles when you win the makeover!!

    Pros

My cat needed spayed and staff told me about an upcoming spay clinic at reduced rates! Saved me lots of money!

    by: rbolander

I thought this was a terrific place to find an additional to our family. The staff was so nice and cared so much for the animals. When I went to look for a new family member, I just couldn't leave without one. When I saw this cat, my heart just knew he wanted to come home with me. The staff members were so great, they let me bring him home for a 2 week trial and if I wanted him to stay, I had to return for his neuturing. Which we did and now 12 years later and spoiled he is a wonderful family member. I just wanted to thank everyone and I'm sure so does he.

My family adopted a puggle mix puppy in November from WAHS. This was our first puppy and although we were a little apprehensive about the "how to's" and such, we were sent home with a large packet FULL of tips, coupons, etc. and the young lady that was there helping us with the adoption procedure was a truly fantastic, sincere person. \r\n\r\nThe staff really makes all of the difference there. I am really pulling for the Humane Society to win this, as I would LOVE to see a bigger facillity to house all of the animals coming through there. \r\n\r\nIt also has restored my faith that this is something that our entire county and beyond has jumped into with both feet. However, in choosing that dog for him, we spent hours at the facility, just looking, listening, and never felt rushed to choose, leave, whatever. She ran off and I have not seen her since. I was very worried for her kittens though, so I call the Humane Society. by: DezzysMom

I got my 1st cat from WAHS when I was 10. I have since adopted several animals from this shelter and donate frequently. I think it's great that they have become a "no kill" shelter but with limited space available and funding, they find themselves turning away animals. My concern is that these animals that get turned away end up "dumped" off in the country or even worse consequenses. They rely on donations to stay open. I hope everyone in our area gets involved and helps out. It is a great facility but is reflective of the financial demographics of ther area it is in. These people are angels for animals here on earth. Thanks for all you do!

I have lived in Washington county my whole life. I have gotten a few animals from the shelter and never had any problems. The staff there is just great and are very helpful with any problems or questions. The shelter is in the perfect area they just need a bigger place for the animals who are unfortunate to get adopted to roam and have fun time. The prize would be a great asset for not only the shelter but the community as a whole. If you want a pet I believe this is probably the best place to go, they make sure that the animals are clean and they are very upfront about what they know about the animals. Go and visit and you will see what a great environment the shelter really is.

  • 445. Washington Area Humane Society is one the select pet lover Santuaries

    by: ademir

The Washington Area Humane Society remains one of those santuaries still devoted to the good will of pets as the years pass.\r\nIt was wonderful that this website was developed to permit people to show just how much people care about their local shelters.\r\nFor this reason, the Washington Area Humane Society gains my praise.\r\nI still recall many years ago, their friendly advice and offering of assistance when we had adopted our very first pet from this shelter.\r\nOne of the greatest treasures of the Washington Humane Society is to realize that people still care among all the ills in society to realize this haven is still around.\r\nThis shelter even offers a unique program of offering pets to the elderly at a discount since we all know that nothing is better among our elders than knowing the connection between pets and our elderly are a wonderful connection, and this shelter offers that great possibility. \r\nAnother wonderful connection between this shelter and the community is that this shelter represents the community.\r\nYou can travel many miles away from this shelter and find those whom will know of their good deeds towards pets.\r\nSo, in a nutshell ,this is what is the true meaning of caring for those around you, be it pets, be it children, adults, seniors and you walk in the door, and you are the shelter.\r\nHave doubts, go find out yourself and you will see.

    Pros

Still one of those shelters whom care enough to save pets at all costs

    Cons

the Cons would be that not enough folks know about them until now.

  • 450. Check out WAHS!!

    by: HariDecisis

I adopted my lilly girl from WAHS very recently, on my second visit to the shelter. the staff are friendly, present & visible, and there is ALWAYS someone around keeping an eye on the pups - at the ready to ask if you would like to take one on a walk. there are 2 fenced pens with toys in which you can remove the leash & play with the dogs! there are plastic bag dispensers and receptacles posted all around to keep the grass clean. the staff are friendly & the dogs are well cared for. it seems that these folks really do above and beyond what you would expect, and work with what they have. the many animals they love & rescue certainly deserve an upgrade/makeover, but they make it work with what they've been given for the time being! the dogs each have their own dog-door to an outdoor portion of the pen, and there always seem to be people around socializing the dogs. Further, the staff were very upfront with me about the dogs I checked out - what kinds of behavior they had been seeing, how the dogs reacted to other dogs and kids, etc...\nI love love love my new pup & am so grateful to the WAHS for taking great care of her until I was able to find & adopt her!!\nxoxo

After we went there for couple of weeks they asked us to help clean the pens in the upper building the children loved it. Now ever week we go there the children look forward to that. Thanks so much for allowing us to walk the dogs.\r\nHope you win!

  • 455. Wonderful Shelter

    by: jennlynn82

I have been volunteering at WAHS for about the last 8 months on my lunch hour and occassional Saturday or Sunday afternoons. I have found the nicest of people there and the lonliest of animals. I do spend my time with the cats and if I could I would have more than my one cat I do have, but the landlord will not permit it at this time. There are times there are 2 or 3 or more kittens/cats in one cage because there are so many there waiting for a home. These poor animals are there at no fault of their own...strayed, abandoned, surrendered, you name it...they are scared and lonely. So even though I'm only there most days for an hour I know in that hour that I have been able to cuddle a cat or 2 or 3 and get them out of their cold metal cage and realize the world is still good and people do still want them...or helping to bottle feed kittens that don't have their mom to nurse them or care for them. The staff in the cat room are with those kittens 24/7 bottle feeding them and bathing them. The animals there just need someone to give them a second chance. The shelter has the best people working there, they truely do have the best interest of the animal at hand. There was a kitten at the shelter a few months ago, that they were actually holding for me waiting for me to find out if my landlord would alter my lease and allow 2 cats in my apartment, and when I wasn't allowed, I was in tears and simply said just promise she goes to a really good extra special home...and she did. I was lucky enough to be there and meet the young couple who adopted her. They are so knowledgeable...anytime I have had any questions or concerns about my own cat, someone there was able to answer my questions. I can't say enough good about the people that work there. This shelter deserves the million dollar make-over more than words could ever say.

The staff and volunteers at this shelter are wonderful and caring people. They treat the animals with love and respect. Visit whenever I am passing by. I help support the shelter by participating in the P.A.T.H.S program. This is an easy way to help that I recommend to anyone or anyone owning a small business that would like to help. It is always very clean and the people are extremely friendly and caring. However, it breaks my heart to see so many unwanted animals.

  • 460. Craze

    by: sarahcaitlind

Every one of my family's pets has been rescued, if not by us by the humane society. I wouldn't hesitate about getting a cat or dog from there.\r\nI don’t like that because I'm under 21 I wasn't allowed to play with any animal outside of the cage (liability issues). The animals deserve the attention. I am enthusiastic about anything that will benefit innocent animals. Abused, abandoned, neglected, or unaffordable, every animal is a living breathing creature.\r\nI want our humane society to get the make over so badly. I’m hoping this thing gets big enough that it encourages more people to adopt pets instead of buying from breeders. There are a lot of amazing animals there that will never know what it is like to live in a home with a family or a single owner. I want this to start a craze.\r\n\r\nThere are so many problems in the world. How can we, as Americans, try to help other countries and people if we can't help the animals in our community?\r\n

    Pros

90% of the animals are eager and super friendly

    Cons

So many animals don't get adopted

  • 461. Forever Grateful!

    by: rottydogmom

WAHS has always been may charity of choice, and even more so since adopting a rottie/shepherd mix 4 years ago. I am forever gratefully to everyone at the facility for keeping Chance safe and well cared for until I was able to bring him home. He is a great dog and has come a very long way from his former abusive-burdened life.

    Cons

  • 463. Wonderful Shelter!

    by: amberlynne

I love this shelter! I collect items at my school every spring and everytime I drop my donation the people are so grateful and cannot thank me enough! They really care about what they are doing and really work hard to make the lives of the animals they house better! They even had an "Angel Tree" this year at Christmas time...and of course my sister in law, mother in law, and I just had to each pick one and go shopping for our "angels." What a great way to help the pets celebrate the holidays! I really do believe they know what a holiday is and get excited about Christmas too, just like children:)

I am waiting for springtime until I go there to find a dog that needs a home. I hope that the facility can expand soon because they do serve the community well.

I have adopted serveral dogs from them over my lifetime and will continue to come there first when I can offer another animal a home. I work at Camp Bow Wow South Pittsburgh and we are presently helping them out by fostering 3 dogs at a time till loving homes can be found for them. The people there are great. The dogs are well taken care of, but the shelter needs more space to take on the animals that are coming in. The cat house was great when it was open but do to regulations it was closed and all the cat have to be put in a upstairs room in the shelters main building. The money would help bring the house up to code and bring much needed renovations to the shelter.

    by: tenzeros

I have just recently began volunteering at the The Washington Area Humane Society, approximately 2 months ago. I mainly walk dogs. The shelter is staffed with wonderful, caring people\nwho work hard to provide the animals with comfort during their stay. The public, I think, would be astonished to see what has to be done on a daily basis, including holidays, inside this shelter with very little staffing. But, they somehow manage to do it. From feeding and water to washing the bedding to cleaning up the "mess" of the pets, the small staff continuously hustle to make sure all that needs to be done, gets done while simultaneously serving the needs of potential pet adopters. One thing that I would like to see is more male volunteers. There are women who are capable of walking the larger, stronger dogs. But, I've seen some get pulled around.\nTo their credit, they do try.

    Pros

    Staff works very, very hard

    Cons

Volunteers could be more understanding of what the staff does.

  • 473. Most Wonderful Place To Adopt A Pet!

    by: mary2dogs

I love The Washington County Humane Society! The staff are exceptional people who really love & care for pets with "Real Affection"\r\nThey don't have the best facility that they deserve but they don't let that stand in the way of what they love to do! The Humane Society is very clean & the staff work really hard at keeping it that way. My daughter has volunteered at this shelter & loved every moment of it. Thanks to the Humane Society, animals are being placed every day in loving homes!

    by: Kb

Western PA citizens are the most hard working and generous people in the world, and I have been to many countries to know this fact. Though the human population is graying, and the economy is difficult here the people give more than they can afford both monitarily and in time all the time. I have adopted all my dogs and cats over the past 20 years from the WCHS and they have been wonderful creatures to be responsible for.\r\nMy WCHS cat of 18.5 years just died and I will be getting my next cat shortly from the WCHS!

    by: cindylunew

I had a few of my animals neutered at Wash Humane Society. I've also take a few strays there and was able to use the ABC program to help defray the cost of reproduction controll for animals which were not actually mine. The facilities were accomodating. The staff was pleasant with the animals. One of tehe duties of humans as put on this earth is to be in charge over the animals. Wild animlas and domestic, each in different ways. We cannot just kill to controll population. Domestic animals can give joy to the proper family. I hope this shelter ALWAYS remains in business and is ALWAYS a no kill shelter.

The only negative item is it is a small place, and they really need to expand. There are a lot of people helping out there, and not much elbow room.\r\n\r\nIf you cannot open your home to a pet at this time, just stop by and give a donation.\r\n\r\n

I adopted my 8 year old kitty Jake from WAHS back in 2000. I had gone there to adopt a ginger kitty that I absolutely fell in love with, but Jake stuck his paw out of his cage and "grabbed" me! So, I went home with two kitties that day! Unfortunately, Honey passed a few years ago from liver failure, but Jake has been my most treasured companion - from sitting on my belly when I was pregnant with my younger daughter to helping keep me warm at night, he has been wonderful! Thanks WAHS!!

    by: GSDRule97

WAHS is a great little NO-KILL Humane Society settled in a rural-like area, but with a highway close by. Always a lot of dogs which can be sad at times, but that gives me more to walk. The cats live upstairs in a CLEAN attic-like area, where the staff can be a little edgy around children; but I know they're only trying to keep them safe. \r\n The staff are mainly friendly, and the dogs that call that place there home for awhile really love to bark! :)\r\nBut that's no problem to me, I love them. :) :) <3\r\nA great place! \r\n

Jean Sexauer (Foster Coordinator) and Lori (Manager) are exceptional people that I will deal with every time I want to adopt a kitty. I've adopted 4 kittens so far from WAHS, and will continue to do so as long as I'm physically and financially able! My last kitten Lany was suggested to me by Jean & Lori, and she is the most precious animal in the world.

  • 516. very deserving of a makeover

    by: tamkat1031

I have been volunteering at the WAHS for 1-1/2 years and i have never seen a more committed group of people in my life. We are almost an all volunteer organization and receive very little funding. They are so dedicated to the animals in the shelter and receive so little for all of their efforts. I would love for them to win this makeover because they are very deserving. We got our last two pets there and couldn't be happier. They are the BEST!!!!

    Pros

kindest hearted and hardest working staff and volunteers

    Cons

    no money!!!!!!!

  • 518. Amazoing Place!!

    by: gerbilgirl1994

The WAHS is a no kill animal shelter. It is always good to know that none of the animals there face death if no one wants them. I have only been here a few times, and I have never adopted an animal here, but the volunteers and staff are so willing to help. It amazes me that they give up their time to save animals and do so much hard work for them. The WAHS is really an amazing place.

  • 519. One Great Place!

    by: mboschuk

My family has been adopting our dogs from WAHS since I was a kid back in the early 80's... We have had Pepper 1 and Pepper 2, Prince and Monica while growing up... Now that my sister and I moved out... we each have our own "families", my sister has Shyan & Max, my parents have Sandy, Snow and Chanel and I have Corona.... \r\n\r\nWAHS has given us years of happiness with our pets... I am truely greatful to them...\r\n\r\nEveryone there is so welcoming and they really do care about each and every animal...\r\n\r\nIf they only had more, I can only image the happiness they would bring to the animals and pet lovers here in PA....\r\n\r\nThey always have events going on and are constantly trying to improve the quality of life for these homeless pets.... If I only had the room.... I would take them all home...\r\n\r\nThanks WAHS!\r\n\r\n

    Pros

    They really do care...

    Cons

    If they only had more....

  • 520. Great shelter

    by: dbaxter

I have been volunteering at WAHS since June. Even only being there since then I have seen a lot. I'm sure everyone there agrees that we could use a makeover. It would really help out the shelter. One of the bad things is that we definitely need more space to be able to take in more dogs. There are many great volunteers and staff that help the shelter.

    Pros

No kill shelter, great volunteers and staff

    Cons

Not a lot of space, could use a makeover

  • 521. They Truly Care

  • 525. PG = Pretty Good

    by: lavatch

The staff at the Washington Area Humane Society are very polite and eager to answer questions. They do not try to push their animals on to people, but instead attempt to find the perfect match for pet and household. Very impressive.

    Pros

no kill shelter, close to home

    Cons

small, needs a great deal of work done to the building itself, has been vandilized in the recent past

  • 526. Awesome shelter with kind knowledgeable staff.

  • 528. Awesome shelter with kind knowledgeable staff.

    by: lbrodnick

This is a great shelter. They have a very knowledgeable staff, and are willing to help you pick the right kind of animal for you. I went there originally to find a friend for my dog. The staff helped me walk through the shelter and gave me details about each dog and helped me match up a friend for my lovable mutt. Unfortunately, my dog is not very sociable and has had trouble meeting the right dog buddy, but we haven't given up.

    Pros

    VERY knowledgeable staff

    Cons

  • 529. Foster Program at WAHS

    by: jeansexauer

the foster program at the WAHS is a great tool for the animals that are not ready for adoption whether it is because they are sick, too young, need to be socialized or are a court case and can not be adopted until released to our custody.\r\n\r\nThe foster program has been working especially well with pregnant animals; they can have their litters in a safe and loving environment and then when ready we can make room for them at the shelter to be put up for adoption.\r\n\r\nThe foster program allows the no kill shelter to free up space so that we can take in animals instead of typing up the kennels with animals that can not be adopted.\r\n\r\nWe are working hard at making the program work for everyone and all we need are more foster parents.

    Pros

it helps to socialize the animals and give them a home until they are ready for adoption

    Cons

foster parents get attached and want to adopt too often

  • 530. washington area shelter much improved

    by: helens

Revisited this shelter and very pleased with the new management and upbeat staff. Animals all well cared for. Nice areas to walk dogs...very good. Also loved the events put on to raise money...i know money is MUCH needed here.

    Pros

Animals in nice surroundings and easy to walk them and observe in pet enclosures to see the true nature.

    Cons

Large dog breed area too congested and scarey with dogs on both side making lots of noise.

  • 531. A very fine shelter indeed

    by: michi107b

I've never gone anywhere else when looking for a pet to care for. My two cats were adopted there about 5-6 years ago and they are two of the most loving pets ever. \r\nThe staff was helpful in recommending ways to help a kitten and an older, eccentric cat bond and like one another. They also have helpful tips on how to groom my crazy Norweigan cat whose fur gets matted often. They've been nothing but generous and helpful.\r\nWe also take part in the clinic days.\r\nPlease support the shelter! ! !

    Pros

Helpful staff, pets are very well cared for!!

    Cons

That more pets aren't adopted from here everyday because they are quality animals that deserve a home

  • 532. Great shelter that needs some help

    by: HinesWardFan

Washington Area Humane Society really upholds its mission to protect and house homeless, unwanted, and abused pets. They shelter dogs and cats, lots of them. They are well taken care of, you can just tell that they are clean and they are being fed. But the shelter is old, crowded outdated, small. There is a lot of good that would come out of this shelter winning this contest because they really deserve it. They work so hard for animals in the area, and they do it running on a shoestring.

    Pros

no kill, clean, kind staff and volunteers

    Cons

need new building, more volunteers, more money, etc

  • 533. WAHS...a good place to be a dog..but a home would be even better!!!

    by: momof3furbabz

WAHS is a top-notch shelter in the wstrn pa area. The animals there are taken care of very well and the place is/always seems to be clean when we visit. \r\nThe "payed" staff are ver knowledgeable and the volunteers are very friendly and helpful. We adopted a dog there a few years ago and he has been the best dog to date...and we have 2 other dogs.\r\nI highly recommend this shelter if you are looking to adopt your fur-ever fur baby!

    Pros

honestly and truly care about the animals there.

    Cons

not enough room for the cats to be able to stretch their little wings/paws :)

  • 534. WAHS

    by: kmw723

I have been a volunteer and a member of WAHS for a very long time. This shelter and its volunteers/ employees do a wonderful job placing animals in good homes. Since this shelter is no-kill and does not receive much government funding, space for incoming animals becomes very limited. WAHS runs on public donations and every penny helps so please do whatever you can to make a better temp home for these potential pets!

    Pros

    no- kill

    Cons

    no government funding

  • 535. VERY CLEAN AND WELL SITUP SHELTER

  • 536. Very caring no-kill shelter

    by: gennafurmash

This is where my dogs Sandi, Sunny, and Cisco all came from as well as my cats Princess and Tommy. I love everyone at the WAHS. They are very helpful and kind. Anytime I have been there they have always had a good selection of various cats and dogs up for adoption. The facility is very clean and the pets are well cared for there. I would encourage anyone who is thinking about adopting a pet to check them out. Or if you are thinking about volunteering at a shelter look into this one. They are a no-kill shelter and everyone is very friendly there.

    Pros

No-kill, very caring staff/volunteers, great selection of pets

    Cons

    Not one

  • 537. A family shelter at WAHS!

    by: mm14567

I've been coming to this shelter since I was little. We also just adopted one of my dogs from there and she's one of the best dogs we've ever had! They're very nice people and the dogs are just as sweet. Though this shelter is a little far away from any major towns it's very worth the drive. The are also very organized when it comes to the fundraisers and how the shelter flows. I go there every sunday and it always cheers me up to see my good friends (and I'm not just talking about the people!). I love this shelter very much and all in all; it's the best shelter around.

    Pros

    Great people; Very organized

    Cons

    Not enough room

  • 538. A wonderful place for animals

    by: chuckiesmom

My daughter has been volunteering there for almost 2 years. She has learned a lot about the animals and is very excited when one finds a good home. The staff is great and they really care about the animals.

    Pros

A caring staff that does a wonderful job

    Cons

    none

  • 539. In it for the animals

    by: auntadaira

WAHS is a shelter in need. The staff and volunteers do with what they have and the animals are taken care of and put first inspite of the financial need. I have been an active volunteer for 1 1/2 years and I love it there. They socialize their animals at every opportunity and evaluate them on a daily basis. We are active fundraisers, but our volunteer numbers are not as great as many other bigger shelters and manpower is always an issue. Cash flow is always a problem so we rely on generous supporters. I love WAHS!

    Pros

The animals are taken care of before anything else

    Cons

The animals environment is not optimal because of need

  • 540. Big hearts in Little Washington

    by: tyoung

The Washington Area Humane Society is where all my animals have come from. The people here have their hearts broken all the time and yet they keep on loving and caring for these animals. They know that if they don't, the animals would live very sad lives. They are always very nice and helpful when I have questions and helped me find the animal that was just right for my family. They still remember the animals that I adopted and when I see them, they ask about them. They are a small establishment that work so hard for these animals.

    Pros

    Dedication

    Cons

    Small

  • 541. Fostering Ruby

    by: Gideon

Fostering the dog has been rather easy to do. We just introduced her to our household knowing that if it became a problem we could return her. \r\n\r\nVet support is free through the Humane Society. Any concerns have been handled timely through the Program Manager.\r\n\r\nReally happy with fostering. Will most likely adopt.

    Pros

    Easy answers, easy communication

    Cons

    No specific timeline

  • 542. Great place to adopt a pet!

    by: brooksmom92

I have adopted 5 of my 12 cats from WAHS. They were in great health and very well taken care of. They have some really great animals that need homes. I wish I could take them all. The staff is the best and very helpful, even though they are so busy all the time. They will find time to help you and answer any questions. GREAT place. Don't hesitate to adopt from them. Even the volunteers will do anything they can to help you if you're thinking of adopting into a multi pet household.

    Pros

Pets are very well taken care of.

    Cons

    none

  • 543. Volunteer girls

    by: LADYANDTY

My daughter and I have volunteered at the WAHS for over a year. The staff and volunteers are dedicated, loving and caring. Everytime we go to the shelter to walk dogs, we don't want to leave because we think there might be someone who didn't get walked enough today or didn't get petted or loved enough today. I like many other volunteers, wish every animal could come home with me. The WAHS is a no-kill shelter, which survives on donations. The shelter could use a facelift, the animals would love it.

    Pros

    Dedicated, loving staff and volunteers

    Cons

Shelter needs constant work and repairs

  • 544. WAHS All about animal love & dedication

    by: maq333

One fantastic place! Bless all of the volunteers at WAHS for all of their time, love, effort and care for the animals. Very dedicated group of people whose hearts are definitely in the right place. Watching out for every four legged animal that comes to them for help & help finding a forever home.

    Pros

Total dedication to all animals who come thru their door

    Cons

    Bigger, updated facilty needed

  • 545. Awesome shelter

    by: JasonKurnot

My girlfriend volunteers at the shelter, so I started coming up to help out sometimes. I have been there a few times, and it is a very busy place. The people seem pretty nice, but you can tell they need more funding and stuff. I hate to see animals in cages, but at least I know that they will find homes some day. It sure beats the alternative!

    Pros

    Friendly volunteers

    Cons

    Needs more funding and updates

  • 546. WAHS loves their animals!

    by: LaurenS

I absolutely love Washington Area Humane Society! I have been volunteering there since July. We are one of very few no-kill shelters in the Pittsburgh area. We have 3 humane officers working with us and a very hardworking staff. I mainly volunteer as a dog walker. Please pass it on, we need more dog walkers! Some of my fellow volunteers have been working hard to improve our dog walking areas lately so that we have more trails. Things are looking good so far, but of course, we could really use this makeover, support, and more volunteers! I really really enjoy volunteering, and I hope you'll come join our mission of helping the homeless, unwanted, and abused animals of southwestern PA!

    Pros

    No kill shelter!

    Cons

    Need new shelter
