  • 1. Great Shelter

    by: janepetty12

My family and I took a vacation to Vieques a few years ago and couldn't resist leaving without a furry friend. We went to the shelter on our last day there, but they were closed. When the heard the dogs barking to greet us, a staff came out and allowed us into the shelter, despite the fact it was the one day they were closed. We immediately bonded with a beautiful mutt. The woman we were working with helped us fill out all of the papers. Because she was a volunteer from the same area as we were, she was returning home in a month and offered to bring our new friend home with her and meet us at the airport. This was an extremely generous offer, so we took her up on it. A month later we received a wonderful dog. Although scared at the beginning, Navio settled in well. And how she loved the New England snow!\nThis is a wonderful shelter, which deserves some financial help to take even better care of the strays on the island.

    Pros

Very nice people, great space for dogs to play

    Cons

    Low budget

  • 2. Vieques Does A Lot with A Little

    by: jemezmama

I was amazed when I toured the facility how much these volunteers have done with so little. The new cat facility was great with lots of comfort for the cats living there.

    Pros

    Very dedicated staff

    Cons

    Limited resources

  • 3. Tender Love and Care

    by: csao

Vieques Humane Society Staff should be applauded for the everyday hard work with always very limited means - this year…with the increasing economic difficulty over the past few months in Vieques and no government aid they are strugling with funds. Lets give them support and help make a difference! one at a time\r\n

    Pros

    Loving, caring manager & staff

    Cons

no government help, rely on private donations, constant financial hardship

  • 4. Kudos

    by: playa

The problem of unwanted and stray animals in Puerto Rico is well-known. At least the island of Vieques, PR, had made great strides and should be a shining example to the rest of Puerto Rico and other islands in the Carribean. This is how it is done.

    Pros

    Just about everything

    Cons

    Crowded reception office area

  • 5. Vieques Animal Shelter

    by: jdark

I am impressed with the dedicated staff and volunteers who work very hard to provide the animals with medical care, a clean living space and just as important, love and attention. Even though funds are short and sometimes resources are lacking, the staff at the shelter do their very best to provide the basics for each animal. I've seen people with vision and great ideas for providing a promising future for the stray and homeless animals on Vieques. This shelter has lots of potential.

    Pros

dedicated staff, vision for the shelter's future

    Cons

lack of funding, many animals needing care

  • 6. most dedicated

    Pros

always trying to do better for the animals

    Cons

just not enough volunteers and $$

  • 7. superb but too many animals

    by: MJMILLER

the VHS has a nice large area for the dogs but there are too many at times. They are very good at getting shelter animals adopted out to homes in the states which is cool because Vieques will always have plenty of "satos", strays and unwanted babies.

    Pros

large area for dogs to run

    Cons

    too many animals

  • 8. Something Wonderful for the Community

    by: richva

Dedicated staff and volunteers, and some of the finest four-legged companions to be found anywhere.

    Pros

Care and handling of all animals

    Cons

    None that I know of

  • 9. Great Place

    by: MarkPMartin

The Shelter has been working for years to make this island a better place for the people and the animals. Facing limited funds and resources, the shelter is able to accomplish many positive results. Great staff, great volunteers and great animals.

    Pros

    Helping so many animals

    Cons

    Not enough funds

  • 10. Best Shelter Ever

    by: EmilyDark

This shelter has made it a long way and it trying it very best to deal with adversity with limited means. VHS is the only shelter on the whole island and has so many animals to help. With limited time with the Veterinarians and with a great working and volunteering staff, they are able to better the lives of many otherwise suffering animals. Also, the adoption program is growing and will get bigger....VHS is trying to find these animals homes in the states so they can treat and help more and more. Great job VHS! keep up the great work!!

    Pros

    VHS helps SO MANY ANIMALS

    Cons

Have so many animals and not enough money

  • 11. VHSAR does wonders on a shoe strig budget

    by: berumore

These dedicated folks do a great job on a shoe string budget. The VHSAR survives on donations, fundraisers & when lucky a grant here or there.\n\nThe current census is 56 dogs & 37 cats. The staff, 4 full time & 2 part time are a real team & do good things with little to go on.\n\nWe need more space to do our jobs better & provide better service to our community. Getting chosen for a makeover would be a gift from the gods.

    Pros

    Working wonders with little cash

    Cons

Need more space: office, storage (shelter & office), no isolation, kennel runs need up grade needs

  • 12. Well done VHSAR

    by: WP

I remember when there was no humane society on this island off Puerto Rico. This shelter has made a huge difference. The staff goes above and beyond the call of duty. Adoption rate is very good.

    Pros

Clean premises, animals well cared for and happy. Staff friendly, conscientious hard workers, dedicated.

    Cons

Could use more funding and exspansion of facilities.

  • 13. AWESOME FOR A SMALL ISLAND ESPECIALLY

    by: Mawanda

    Pros

    Cons

    NO GOVERNMENT FUNDING

  • 14. Our Vieques Island Shelter

    by: vieques

This shelter is well run and everyone always very helpful and friendly. They have made a big difference on this island. It gets a little crowded sometimes in the reception and medical area and it is surprising the things that are accomplished despite this. Otherwise the kennels. pens, runs and cat house are all good sizes.

    Pros

The staff does the best they can under all situations

    Cons

More space is needed to continue the good work.
