  • 1. VCA Animal Hospitals Need Oncologists in every city and state.

    by: k9mom2001

I have been a client of the VCA animal hospital in my city for nearly 18 years. The majority of the people there are pleasant and helpful and so far, I've had no major complaints...until now. One of my little dogs was recently diagnosed with oral melanoma and unfortunately...there is NO oncologist at the VCA animal hospital! Because there is NO oncologist at this hospital, they do not carry life saving cancer drugs such the the Canine Melanoma Vaccine... which I have been told by the company who manufactures it, Merial, that it is only distributed to canine oncologists. I find it very hard to believe that experienced veterinarians, such as mine, would not have the knowledge to administer these drugs to save our pets! My vet told me today, that he has no experience with the drug. I've had no experience riding an elephant, but I'm sure I could learn. These drugs should be available to all animal hospitals, to all experienced veterinarians..who, with training, seminars, etc., could indeed learn to use these drugs to save our pets. It's too late to save my little dog, but something should be done so that in the future, others may be saved. Oncologists and life saving cancer vaccines, PLEASE!!!

    Pros

    Cons

Having seen how one of the VCA locations is run, I thought it would be good to post a review regarding the company headquarters:\r\n\r\nVCA Animal Hospitals (Veterinary Centers of America) \r\n\r\n"Where your pet's health is our top priority and excellent service is our goal."\r\n\r\nvcapets.com\r\n\r\n"We operate over 435+ animal hospitals in 38 states across the nation in the VCA network. These hospitals are staffed by over 1600 fully qualified, dedicated and compassionate veterinarians to give your pet the very best in medical care. Over 130 are board-certified specialists. Our hospitals provide a full range of general medical and surgical services as well as specialized treatments: Wellness, Spay/neuter, Advanced diagnostic services (MRI/CT Scan), Internal medicine, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Cardiology, Neurology, Boarding, Grooming (services may vary by location). We have created a network with the greatest resources to provide the highest quality care available for your pets. What does it mean when we say high quality? It means we maintain the highest standards of pet health care available anywhere. It means we emphasize prevention as well as healing. It means we provide continuing education programs to our doctors and staff. It also means we promote the open exchange of professional knowledge and expertise. And finally, it means we have established a consistent program of procedures and techniques, proven to be the most effective in keeping pets healthy."\r\n\r\nvcaantech.com and vcaantech.com/about.htm\r\n\r\n"VCA Antech was founded in 1986 under the name "Veterinary Centers of America", with the goal of creating a company that would be the leader in providing veterinary care for pets across the country. VCA started with the purchase of one premier animal hospital - VCA West Los Angeles in 1987. At that time, VCA was owned by a group of private investors. Over the years, VCA grew to become the largest pet health care provider in the country. Under our new name, VCA Antech, we now operate over 435 animal hospitals in 38 states and provide diagnostic services to over 14,000 independent hospitals nationwide. In 2001 VCA Antech became a publicly owned company. VCA Antech stock is traded on NASDAQ under the symbol "WOOF." The VCA Antech family is continually growing and in the first quarter of 2001 we employed over 5,000 people in our hospitals and laboratories across the country. VCA Antech's Corporate Headquarters are located in West Los Angeles. From this location we centralize various administrative functions, offer marketing support and negotiate purchasing contracts for the benefit of our hospitals and laboratories. ...
