    Cons

  • 2. Nice Efforts on Animal Adoption Exposure

    by: rjlupinskat

Not being a Vanderburgh County citizen, I've not been to the shelter itself, but my review is on what I see out in the community from this shelter, their efforts to adopt out the animals.\r\n\r\nOn that front, they do a great job: regularly they bring critters to the local PetSmart for Saturday viewings and exposure; there is a regular guest appearance on local news with a 'pet of the week;' they often sponsor or are a part of dog walks and other pet outings where they bring adoptable dogs and cats; their website is usually current, and they spread the word about their facility with local businesses.\r\n\r\nGreat job, VHS!

    Pros

    Widespread marketing

    Cons

    Still limited on concentration

  • 3. Great shelter

    by: klpowell2

I have 2 dogs right now and one of them came from this shelter. The shelter is clean and they really seem to care for all the animals there. The staff is friendly and helpful. I love the low cost spay and neuter clinic there. I'm not sure how many pets they have altered, but I know it's a large number. This has helped to reduce the pet population and saved many more animals from having to be brought into shelter situations.

    Pros

Clean, great spay and neuter clinic

    Cons

    It is a kill shelter

  • 4. Lost Dog-No Help

    by: hensleyturtles

A couple of years ago my boxer mix dog got loose in Evansville on the Northside. I called all the vets in town, the shelter, and put signs up everywhere. I called the vet 5 times over a period of 3 days and each time I described my dog to a tee including the collar he was wearing at the time. Each time the staff replied that they didnt have any dogs there resembling my pet. Finally at the advice of a coworker I drove there and asked (begged, would be more accurate) to please look at the dogs that had been brought in. The very first area I entered I called his name and he immediately responded! Low and behold my dog was brought in less than 2 hours after getting lost. Someone had removed his tags from his collar and the shelter attendant said "you said your dog had tags". That was their defense, no I'm sorry, nothing. The attendent went on to tell me that he was going to be put down because pit bulls are considered viscious dogs in Evansville. (boxer-lab mix, not pitbull) My vet had to call them and set them straight on breed before I could "adopt" my own pet. As soon as we left that place Max and I went straight to pet smart. He was filthy from their facility and had been exposed to mange. I'm not saying that they are still a terrible place, but my experience was very negative. On the other hand I was just glad to have my baby back in one piece. :)

    Pros

    It may have improved...

    Cons

    Staff didnt even look

  • 5. Some good, Some bad

    by: Mahou

The last time I was there was with a friends family. We told the shelter they already had 5 dogs, and were looking for another dog that would fit into their active lifestyle. \n\nImmediately we were taken to a pen with a larger male dog. The staff member told us we could spend time with him then left us. As soon as the staff member was gone, the dog began to bark and snarl. We think it might have been from the smell of other dogs.\n\nAfter being forced into the corner by the dog, the lady came back and the dog was 'perfect' again. We explained it to her, but she seemed confused. My friend went back later and told me the dog was still there, in a room where people could go in and look at it/interact.\n\nMy friend didn't adopt from the shelter that day, or any other day infact, because of that incident.

    Pros

    very clean

    Cons

some staff members dont seem to know whats going on..

VHS is an amazing place. The employees greet visitors cheerfully, and work with them to find the perfect pet. I have two dogs from VHS: an 11-yr.-old Lab mix, and a 3-yr-old Golden Retriever. \r\n\r\nNot long ago, VHS opened a spay/neuter clinic. All animals are neutered before they go to their new homes, but that's just the beginning. Dr. Lautner and the clinic staff also neuter animals from other shelters, and anyone can walk in for the same service, for a nominal fee. This is a huge plus for our city. I'm amazed that the shelter is able to offer such a range of services while subsisting purely on donations from the cummunity. The place is worth a visit, even if you aren't looking for a pet. And while there, you might consider making a donation!

    Pros

Kind, caring employees; clean shelter; healthy, happy pets

    Cons

    None

  • 7. great folks!!

    by: sfarmer67

The folks at VHS are doing a great job saving as many lives as possible. It is a very clean facility and does so many outreach programs to help raise awareness of pet overpopulation. They are always willing to take pets in from people who abuse or neglect their animals.

  • 11. Difficult to adopt from.

    by: zacbotts

I went to the Vand. Co Humane So to adopt a kitten. I was a Veterinary Tech who had worked for a local vet for 12 years. I had also worked at this very shelter before taking the job at the vet's office. \r\nAfter I listed my current pets the worker at the shelter told me, and I quote: "You can't adopt because you're a breeder. You have too many pure-bred animals."\r\nI am fully aware of how many pure-bred animals are left at shelters as that is where mine all came from. Plus the kitten I was trying to adopt was NOT a pure-bred, and all my animals were neutered. \r\nAfter bringing in a letter from my boss/veterinarian, who by the way had a partner who did the shelter's animal care, they let me adopt the kitten.\r\nYou can see her picture in my profile. She is Ginger.\r\nFrom now on I will adopt from the Gibson County Humane Society where I have gotten many of my pets.

    Pros

They are trying to do the right thing.

    Cons

    Makes huge assumptions.
