    by: schneiders2012

I would NOT recommend this shelter to anyone. My family & I have tried to adopt from this place many times. Recently, again, we went up there to adopt a dog to add to our family, filled out paperwork, viewed adoptable dogs, interacted with a few, ect. We were told we would recieve a phone call within a week from a staff member to make an appt to come to our home to 'inspect' it. Never got that call. I called many times to see if we could make that appt, and all I got was the run around. They want to get these animals homes, but how can you give an animal a home if you never contact the person interested & willing to give the animal a home? So this place needs to quit complaining about no room for more animals. There are plenty of people who we know that has tried as well to adopt from there, but they get the same treatment as we did. Will not go back up there again. I'd rather go to other shelters to adopt, like the Rainbow Ranch in Morse Mill, where we adopted our dog Jasper.

    Pros

    Clean & tidy, nice volunteers

    Cons

Too many to put on here

  • 3. Open Door making a difference

    by: 2peeps2

Open Door is a wonderful facility for homeless animals. It is very clean with a lot of room for individual animals in the form of pens and outdoor yards. They could expand somewhat on the housing that is available for cats, but they do a wonderful job of taking care of all of the animals.

    Pros

Have a great facility in a rural setting.

    Cons

Not located within easy comuting from the larger communities.

This shelter is where we got our cat a few years ago. I was so impressed with the cleanliness and friendliness of the shelter that I did not hesitate to adopt one of their animals. They take good care of the pets, with volunteers that help walk them, play with them, and they make sure the animals are well socialized so when they have a potential home, the animals will fit in easily and be a good companion. \r\nIt is a no kill shelter, and when we were there I could not believe the number of animals they took care of. Because of the number I thought that it would be impossible to treat all of them well. They met their needs and also went above and beyond to nurture the cats and dogs personalities. I recommend the shelter for adoptions or volunteering, if you want to help!

    Pros

No kill shelter, very well organized, dedicated staff

    Cons

distance from city might discourage some potential people from driving there

  • 11. NO KILL SHELTER!!

    by: doglover1974

My parents went here when they lost Sam. It was about a week or so and mom and dad were both missing Sam very much. They went to the open door to visit with the animals and explained to them what had happened. They would let my folks come in and play with the animals and my mom and dad really appreciated that! They were not ready to get anymore dogs yet but this helped when they needed to give animals attention. And a way to get out of the house. Thanks open door for being there for my folks.

    by: lhughes02

I have never adopted from this shelter, but I know many people in Jefferson County that have. I love the fact that Open Door is a no-kill shelter. It breaks my heart to know that people would rather spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars at pet store when they could go to their local shelter and adopt. Please remember to spay and neuter you animals!

    by: Diohgea

I took in my dog as an orphaned new born who was part of a very large litter of dark color mix breed pups. The rest of the litter was divided up and some of them were taken care of by these wonderful people. I was also given a surprise Bischon when they were very popular before a move that did not allow me to keep him and though I didn't want to just leave him somewhere they had someone already waiting for a Bischon that they assured me were wonderful and took him in. I left crying but more happy that they were such life savers than anything. I hope to volunteer there after my youngest starts school in a few years.

    Pros

    No kill and great environment

My husband and myself have visited the Open Door Sanctuary, and were VERY impressed on how CLEAN the place was and How caring the people are to each and every pet. Walking into a place that houses so many creatures of God and you smell NO bad oder of any kind. You DON'T have this in a nursing home for humans. These special people really care for animals and it was sooo comforting to see. They all deserve recognition for their time, patience and love they give.\r\n Sincerely,\r\n Mrs. Rebecca Fears\r\n [email protected]\r\n

  • 21. wonderful no kill shelter

    by: lcurtis4

Open Door Animal Sanctuary is a wonderful place! We've been there many times to volunteer to pet kitties. They seem to truly appreciate that, as the staff doesn't always have as much time as they would like to just socialize with the animals. Their facility is very very clean and the staff seems extremely knowledgeable and caring. They know all of the animals by name & what their story is. We adopted one of our cats from there, & couldn't be happier with her. Please support ODAS!

    Pros

    no-kill, very clean

    Cons

    off the beaten path

  • 22. What an amazing place!

    by: hancockb

We got our second dog there. We were amazed at how clean it is. There are no bad smells and lots of happy dogs. They name all the dogs and take the time to play with them. It is a no kill shelter. They are very particular about adoptions. Shelter dogs are the best--ours was a puppy and has turned out to be a great dog.

    Pros

Great place to get a dog or cat.

    Cons

A little bit of a drive to get there.

  • 23. great

All the animals are very well cared for, the site is well maintained. All of the staff I have had contact with are extremly pleasent and helpful. This is where I got my dog.

    Pros

This is a no kill animal shelter and I found my forever pet there.

    Cons

They do not have enough room, many dogs can not find a place here. So please take a look at them, open a place for some other animal.

    by: DaisyBuddysmom

We went there and just played with the puppies one day. We had just lost a dog and were not ready to get another one yet, but we needed to be with a dog. The place was spotless and the dogs were well taken care of. If one of them messed in their area it was cleaned up right away. They knew why we were there and just let us play with the puppies.

    Pros

They really care about the animals they care for

    Cons

    none
