    by: pawprintz12

Tails is a great shelter to adopt a pet from. Their shelter is very sanitized and the staff there is great. Just last Sunday, I adopted my two new kitties, Ash(original name was Missy) and Cubbie(original name was Peanut). They were very good at explaining everything about adopting a cat from their facility. They could definitely use the help of winning the shelter makeover because they are nonprofit AND no-kill. Each day, they have close to 200 animals in their facility. The animals there are wonderful though.

    by: sherrf1

I love Tails. I have recently signed up to volunteer there but have not started yet. Their animals all look very happy and are well cared for. They also offer several "starter kits" for new pet owners at a very reasonable price. This is a great place to adopt a new best friend.

    Pros

The staff is friendly and very helpful, anything that they do not know about the animals in their shelter, they quickly find out.

    Cons

They do not have a fenced in area for dogs to run and play in outdoors, but they are walked several times a day by volunteers.

  • 3. Knowledgeable, friendly, helpful staff and volunteers!

    by: straycat

We got our black kitty, Bear, through Tails Humane Society. She's been a wonderful pet! The staff at TAILS helped us find her, and made sure we were the right family for her to come home to. They gave us a refresher course on the proper diet and care of a kitten, as well as informing us of potential paw problems she might develop as a polydactyl if her claws formed abnormally. We couldn't be happier with either Bear or the staff there!\n\nTAILS is a low kill shelter, and they're very careful not to adopt out the animals until they're healthy. They're very honest about any preexisting medical conditions that might require extra care. What a wonderful group of people and animals!

    Pros

helpful, friendly, knowledgeable, great pets, good adoption fees

  • 4. Cat and Dog lovers abound

    by: chickenman

TAILS is an outstanding shelter. The staff dedicates their lives to improving companion animal welfare. The management works quickly and effectively to resolve any issues that arise. Not only do they adopt out animals in need, they also raise public awareness regarding issues such as puppy mills. They strive to find the right animal for the right person, and are not afraid to dissuade someone from adopting the wrong animal for them. I know for a fact that many of the staff are educating themselves in various areas of interest, so that they might provide the best care possible for their animals. This involves time outside of work, paying for additional schooling, and working off the clock. I have a high level of respect for this staff, and have had nothing but positive experiences with this organization.

    Pros

Outstanding staff, compassionate people, clean shelter, fantastic standards

    Cons

Not as big as it could be, needs a larger wildlife center

    by: 3manyKitties

I have volunteered with TAILS from the very first public meeting. I have never seen a more dedicated group of people in my life. They spend hours and hours on the animals, fundraising, education, adoptions, and anything else animal related. \r\n\r\nThe animals are house in bright rooms with cheerful colors. Many of the cats share communal rooms with lots of windows. The dogs have roomy, chainlink free runs and lots of walks every day.\r\n\r\nCome sit with the kitties or visit with the dogs!

    Pros

Light, bright, friendly for animals and people

    Cons

Not enough money to do what can be done

    by: johngalt9999

during the recent dekalb, il area pet hoarding case, Tails took in more than 100 dogs and cats. there were also 30+ birds that they brought to a nearby parrot rescue. They left the birds there for 26 days without communicating to the rescue what the status of the birds was. the rescue groomed and medicated all of the birds and was able to save all but 1 of them. the responsibility of caring, feeding, watering and cleaning the cages fell exclusively to the rescue's volunteers. TAILS didn't send any of the hundreds of volunteers they got from the publicity of the hoarding case to help.\r\n\r\nNumerous calls were made to TAILS management about the ownership status of the birds by the rescue's owner, but were either ignored or she was told they didn't know. After about 20 days, she got a call saying that TAILS was going to be taking the birds back to their facility, even though they aren't really set up to care for birds. \r\n\r\nOn the 26th day, the birds were taken back to TAILS. The parrot rescue then gave them a bill for about $3,000, consisting roughly of $10/bird for grooming (normally $15), and $10/day/cage boarding fees (normally $10/day/bird) for 26 days. \r\n\r\nThe parrot rescue didn't hear from TAILS for over 1 month regarding the bill. After making repeated calls to them, the parrot rescue's owner finally got one of the TAILS managers to come out to the rescue to discuss the bill. They refused to pay the full $3,000 (keep in mind that they had just adopted out around 150 cats and dogs at $150 each and had received an outpouring of support and volunteers due to the publicity of the hoarding case). \r\n\r\nThe parrot rescue wouldn't have charged them anything if TAILS had transferred ownership of the birds to the rescue. But since they used our services, food, other resources and volunteer's time and effort the rescue felt that TAILS should be billed like any other customer who boarded more than 30 birds at their rescue for nearly a month. \r\n\r\nEventually, TAILS agreed to pay the parrot rescue $1,000 and foster more cooperation between the two rescues...do joint events and advertising, share volunteers, etc. While the $1,000 has been paid, no steps have been taken by TAILS to fufill the other parts of the agreement.\r\n\r\n

    Pros

    does good in the community

    Cons

communication with management and board is poor at best

  • 13. The Best Shelter!

    by: 1nancyk

I have two dogs adopted from TAILS and one foster dog currently. I volunteer there and have found the people to be friendly - they do the very best possible to help the animals at TAILS. The facility is newer and brighter than many, and you will be very impressed if you visit!

    Pros

    clean and modern, caring staff

    Cons

could be larger, especially more visiting rooms
