  • 1. The best NO-KILL shelter here! The best, the best, the best!

    by: wildchildsmom

I have been a client of this shelter and their vet for several years now. I learned about zootoo from them in their newsletter. Their Staff Veterinarian, Dr. Lisa Johnston is the best, most competent vet I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. She knows exactly how much a nervine I am with my babies and her 'relief' vets are chosen very carefully! The last time I was there when Rusty was sick she made sure to tell me her relief vet would be there on Saturday should I need to come back and she assured me I would love her! Well, little did I know that Patches/Pattie would become sick only 2 days later on the weekend and I had to go to the Emergency Vet with her. Well, the vet there is our relief vet at STHS! She is awesome too! Then, there's the reception and adoption staff...Jessica, Denise, and Michelle, they're the best! They know their jobs and handle them professionally with the utmost care that I've ever experienced! The vet tech's...Natalie and Jean (I think) are awesome as well! They know exactly how to handle the animal's and they do it well! The shelter manager, Vaughn Maurice is one of the most professional manager's I've ever met and dealt with. I did some volunteer work there for a few days and he is awesome to work with! If you live in St. Tammany Parish...you should take your pets there! Additionally, don't forget...to adopt from them too! You'll never regret using their services!

    Pros

The staff, their knowledge, great location, just read below for more!

    Cons

    NOT A THING!

  • 2. LOVE THIS SHELTER! :)

    by: lsinge1

I have volunteered at this shelter when I was younger, and it was a great experience. The staff are amazing and so caring for their animals and customers. I recently picked up a stray beagle in Baton Rouge where I go to school. I brought her to the St. Tammany Humane Society to receive her shots, have her spayed, and to remove some dangling, troublesome due claws. They did such a great job! They took great care of her for us! They also have a function once a year at a local park that offers discounted yearly shots and also heartworm meds and other services! It is really great and we bring all of our dogs there every year! LOVE THIS PLACE AND THE PEOPLE!!!! THANK YOU ST TAMMANY PARISH HUMANE SOCIETY!!!

  • 3. help with maintenence at shelter

    by: KateMalheiro

Find a local college/school that is training landscape contractors/designers or ask these professionals to create drainage swales for the issue w/flooding. They know what they are doing... There are lots of people with trades (plumbing, electrical, landscape) just ask. You all have enough to do already-I understand...God bless you all!

  • 8. the best of care!

    by: farmbuddy

All dogs in my extended family have been cared for at some time in their life by the St. Tammany Humane Society staff. Whether it was an older stray in need of extensive medical treatment like Gladys, our Yorkie/Chihuahua mix; or a puppy my father adopted in need of vaccinations and neutering, or an older pup with arthritis, we count on the clinic staff and Dr. Johnston to recommend the best treatments, and sell quality products to keep our pets healthy. These folks are passionate about caring for dogs and cats, and their owners. I recommend this shelter/clinic to everyone. Please vote to award STHS the shelter makeover they deserve so they can continue to do their good work!

    Pros

    Cons

facility in need of repair, but public areas always clean

  • 9. Awesome!

  • 12. MANWELL

    by: ANNTEEK

Almost twenty years ago I saw a little black kitten at this shelter and fell in love with her. I had to wait a week to see if the owners would come back to get her. They did not, so I took "Manwell" home. She has been a dear friend for the last twenty years, finally passing away recently. I am very grateful that the humane society exists and I donate every year to help keep it afloat. This is the second pet I have adopted, the first being "Eddie" a friendly old mutt that I got when my kids were little.

  • 15. Why St Tammany Humane Society is so Wonderful

    by: Gailen

From the moment I walked in it was easy to see that it was a happy place for the animals. Their spaces were clean and the animals responsive. I adopted two dogs on the spot and have returned year after year to have my dogs vaccinated and cared for with any problems I have had. I, and my dogs have always been treated with utmost kindness and professionalism. I try to support our shelter in every way that I can because it is a very special and wonderful place.

  • 16. My local shelter

    by: Momo9dogs

My family and I have adopted 3 pets from the St. Tammany Humane Society. They are all wonderful pets - well socialized, clean, had shots and were well cared for. My most recent addition is Sampson, a puppy I got at our local festival - Woofstock. He is a joy. I have his picture up. I was given a tour recently of the facility at St Tammany. All of the runs were clean, the dogs were happy (as happy as they can be in a shelter) and the animals were thrilled when they saw staff. I did not tour the cat area, but I'm sure it is just as clean and the kitties are fat and sassy. Thanks, Cathy McConnell (Momo9dogs)

  • 19. I love volunteering there

    by: Melelei

I love going there to socialize the cats. It makes all the difference to me being in a new country and being able to continue to socialize cats at a shelter like I use to do. I also miss my own cats who are with my mother since they could not move with me. Being around cats helps me cope with not having them here and it makes me feel even better that if a cat is not adoptable it will not be put down and will have a home at the shelter.

    Pros

    no kill shelter

    Cons

kinda hard to find if your new to the area

  • 20. Jasper - Adopted from STHS

    by: champ480

Jasper, our German Shepherd (Anatolian), Yellow Lab, Husky mix was adopted from STHS last year when he was 4 months old. He has become the center of our family. He looks EXACTLY like Oliver. We cannot believe that this beautiful and lovable animal could ever be abandoned by anyone. I wish we could take more of the animals and give them homes. Here's hoping that we can all pitch in and win it for STHS. Laura.

  • 30. Give the shelter the same care they give the animals

    by: kritter420

This shelter is filled with loving pets & people alike. The staff is so friendly and dedicated to their work and their mission. They really need this make-over because they are operating out of the same shelter that was opened in 1953 with very little updating, and the back of the shelter floods with any heavy rain. A million dollar make-over could help this shelter grow with the community as it is booming right now and also help so many more people and pets.

    Pros

    friendly, dedicated staff & supporters

    Cons

    hours & building

    by: ArdenWells

I have had a great experience with the St. Tammany Parish Humane Society. When I was looking for a dog, they knew the information behind each animal in the facility. The only problem, though, is that there is trouble finding homes for the animals during hurricane evacuations. They did do a very, very good job getting the word out that the animals needed homes during Gustav, though.

    Pros

    kind workers

    Cons

    evacuations

  • 50. Best One

    by: GenevieveB

We always adopt whenever we're getting a new pet, and this is where we go. I always seemed to have the worst luck at first. The first puppy I chose was found to have problems with it's legs, and I had to be put down by the vet.The first puppy I actually adopted ended up dying after a week from distemper. The staff at the shelter were really understanding and comforting, and made sure they helped me hand pick my new puppy when I was ready for another. She is my current dog now, and is 5 years old. I couldn't be happier.

    by: Kittycatlover22

I have had many experiences with vets and they have all been mediocre to bad experiences. When I went to St. Tammany Humane Society, it was nothing but a good experience. When I went I did have to wait awhile but then again who wouldn't expect that from a place that is so welcoming as the STHS. I was immediately greeted by the staff and my fears were put to ease. I knew that they would take care of my Sylvia. I highly recommend STHS to anyone who needs a vet!

    Pros

Very friendly staff, clean, great environment

    Cons

    kind of busy

  • 72. Really nice people

    by: mylullabi

I adopted a Neapolitan Mastiff from this shelter about a year ago, they loved her nearly as much as we did, they would call and check up on her regularly. Every time we would come up there they would go out of there way to cuddle the puppy. Neo was maybe 6 months old when she got diagnosed with Neurological Distemper, when the veterinarian told us we would have to put her to sleep, she was crying, the day we put her down they all hugged us and cried with us. They do really care about our animals and the animals they save.

    Pros

    very nice, very helpful

    Cons

    by: Annette1117

When it was obvious that my sweet boy Critter would have to go to the Bridge fairly soon, due to declining health from advanced age, I made plans for his cremation at STHS. I learned that I could bring a few things with him, his favorite toy, etc., and that made me feel better. When the day came, they were so sensitive, caring and professional, and that also helped. They made a great difference for me during that difficult time, but, the truth is, they make a difference in our community *all* of the time, as a no-kill-for-life shelter, dependent on donations and fund raising events. My participation in the Zootoo Shelter Makeover competition is the least I can do, to repay STHS for the good stuff they do for our community every single day.

    Pros

    dedicated to community service

    Cons

    needs more space

  • 75. Shelter close to my heart in many ways.

    by: CeciliaGiamundo

I have adopted 2 dogs from STHS, a Golden/Catahoula mix who was a Katrina puppy and a "Dorky" (dachsund/yorkie) mix found in the Walmart parking lot as a baby. I also worked there for 3 years and have firsthand knowledge of just how much the staff in all departments care about the animals above all else. We always had one or two in the directors office and running around socializing. Our director at the time was Beth Brewster who now heads up the shelter in St. Bernard. We had a chow that had been with us for 7 years, agressive toward men and many were afraid of her. Beth started bringing her into her office and she turned out to be just scared and in need of love. She now is a treasured member of Beth's family. I was a foster parent of brand new pups, bottle feeding and keeping them safe until they were old enough to go into the shelter to find a good home. There are many volunteers who do this same thing and most of the staff have had "sleepover" guests for short and long visits. This shelter is full of loving people who if given the makeover would surely make the very best of it and be able to help the helpless in more ways than they do now. CG

    Pros

Having worked there, I know the place inside and out. It's full of special people and special pets looking for a forever home. They are loved and cared for by the staff as if they were their own personal pets, which they surely are as long as they live at STHS.

    Cons

Just needs a makeover to a very old building in need of repairs and expansion. They receive new animals every day, some found outside the gate in boxes or tied to the fence, or found on the side of the road by caring individuals.

    by: w0262295

I had to do a few community service hours, so I decided to go to the St.Tammany Humane Society because I have always loved animals. The first thing I noticed was the smiling faces of the staff. Everyone there was so nice and really made me feel comfortable. Then I noticed all of the animals they had. It made me sad that there were so many animals that had no homes. However, the staff members really strived to take the best care of these animals, and they did. They showed each and every pet the love that they needed. They made sure the pets were well taken care of and clean. It made me feel better knowing that at least these pets had a safe place to be. I also admire the fact that it is a no kill shelter. This is where my dog Rebel was adopted from and I would not hesitate to adopt another pet from this shelter! I really hope they win the makeover, they truly deserve it!!!

This organization is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 animal charity providing adoption services for homeless pets. Chartered in 1953, STHS operates a care-for-life pet adoption center. Over 600 spayed and neutered pets are re-homed each year. They offer a low-cost spay / neuter clinic to the public. Over 2500 pets are spayed or neutered each year. This is truly has to be the greatest clinic out there and they deserve to win.

They genuinely have the best interests at heart. It's clean and well run. Their appeals for foster homes in time of need are answered by caring individuals in the area. by: cpolizzi

I adopted my kitty, Harrison, here last may. My boyfriend and I were looking for a littly fuzzy one to take care of and went to the humane society on a lark. That is where we met Harrison. He is just 10 weeks old. I wanted to adopt the entire litter but no feasible way I could. He was our first cat and they were very helpful with things we needed to know and should look out for. It was great. I really hope they get the makeover because they definitely deserve it.

The animals look very well taken care of and maintained. The people there were very friendly and knowledgeable about the animals. One very important thing about this shelter is that they are a no kill shelter. Although the shelter itself looked a little rugged, they do their best to keep it up and take very well care of the animals with the little amount of help that they receive.

    Pros

    Animals looked very well maintained.

    Cons

They need more help keeping up with the facility, but overall very nice.

    by: Oiseau7447

The St. Tammany Parish Humane society does a wonderful job. Every time I have visited to drop of donations, the shelter is clean and volunteers are walking dogs in a large grassy area that is sheltered by trees. Louisiana animal shelters were greatly stressed by the large number of animals who lost their homes or were were separated from their people by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. This shelter has been a godsend for local animals.

    by: taylorkitty95

I am a huge cat fan, and before visiting today, didnt expect to find many cats at this shelter, because when people around here find a stray, they well..... go to extremes to get rid of them. But when I entered the cat room, I fell in love with every single one-- to the point I didnt want to leave! Of course, I have to say that the dogs get good care, and I would like to note that the vet on duty when I was there was a very jolly guy, who took care of my little brother's dog like it was a child. I will do anything to help this shelter get the makeover it needs!

  • 97. St. Tammany Humane Society: a great Community Member

    by: weslock2004

The St. Tammany Humane Society is more than just a no-kill shelter, it's a valuable member of our community. Hundreds of quality pets have been adopted by great families through STHS. The staff is extremely hard-working and dedicated to the well-being of our animal friends. We adopted our wonderful cat from STHS more than a year ago, and we have worked with Vaughn and the other staff members to help with special projects. One of our favorite projects has been the Pelican Bark Park: an off-leash facility that will be built in 2010. I would love to see this great organization become even better with an improved facility. Since STHS is located in a mixed rural and suburban community, there is a high number of farm and feral animals, and therefore great need for vaccinations, spay/neutering and adoption of these creatures without resorting to euthanasia. I applaud the efforts of Vaughn Maurice and all the folks at St. Tammany Humane Society for their efforts to bring greater quality of life to our community and serving the well-being of animals.

  • 101. Outstanding Humane Shelter

    by: 2lovedogs

This shelter does everything it can to serve an entire parish which has seen the population grow significantly, especially post Katrina. They serve this community as best they can and perform an exceptional job but greatly need to update and more specifically enlarge the facility. The shelter has to operate on a wait list for kennel space. For all of us who cherish animals and do not view them as possessions which can be disposed of without a second thought, I urge those capable of aiding this shelter to do so. These wonderful people do wonderful, humane and necessary good works.

    Pros

No Kill Policy!Great caring, knowledgable vets and staff. A very clean and warm environment.

    Cons

I have great memories of volunteering at the St. Tammany Humane Society as a Pet Pal. I would go to walk the dogs and play with the kittens. Now that I am older, I no longer have the time to volunteer, but I really admire the work being done by the Humane Society. The facility is in desperate need of a renovation however, and I sincerely hope that they win the makeover. Especially, after the many devastating hurricanes we've experienced, there are more animals than ever, desperately in need of care and eventually a good home. Thanks to the humane society for all their efforts thus far!

    by: doxsea

I have only had dogs in my life for 15 years and occurred as a random selection event. Since then we have added two more dachshunds and love them. We are fortunate to have met the staff at St Tammany Humane Society at a fund raiser manyyears ago. We became steady supporters of this great organization and have made many trips (as recent as this week) to donate things of use and value to the St Tammant Humane Society as well as financial contributions. In the past we were able to solicit corporate support also. Every time I visit the facility I witness the caring staff taking care of animals and aiding pet owners by providing low cost professional , medical care. One neat thing this selter does is place ads and sends notices when they have a special "case" that needs treatment or care beyond their fiscal reach. They have made it easy to make contributions via the internet to assit inthis special care or treatment. These are good people doing good work for so many without asking a single thing from others for themselves. PWT

  • 110. The Best Shelter

    by: Napoleon57

First of all, I love that this is a no kill shelter. That fact enabled me to adopt the sweetest and best dog I ever had. Since this dog has died, I now have another mixed breed dog that is on a special diet. The St. Tammany Humane Society does a wonderful job of having the food on hand when I need it. I buy the biggest bag possible to save money and once when they only had the small, expensive bags available, they gave me a special deal on it and quickly ordered what I needed. I have also called for advice and have always been met with patience even though I know they are almost always really busy. I appreciate having them in my neighborhood!

    Pros

they give good advice and really care about your animals

    Cons

they are closed on Mondays which could make boarding a bit more expensive

This shelter is obviously "nurtured" by a caring staff. It appears to be monitored constantly for cleanliness. Let's admit it...no easy task. The building needs updating, if only to make management of the facility easier to maintain.\n I am impressed with the caring staff. They genuinely have the best interests of their "boarders" at heart. It's clean and well run. Their appeals for foster homes in time of need are answered by caring individuals in the area. The precious animals who cannot be fostered due to illness or lack of volunteers are cared for by a brave staff member...even during hurricanes in which all are ordered to evacuate! • 127. The best shelter by far

    by: apoochiepoo

I like that they check out everyone that is trying to adopt an animal from their shelter, to make sure they are an ok person, not some sleeze ball wanting to hurt animals. I have been there many times, and they are very sweet to all the animals and humans. Thank you for all that you do, with out you the animals would not be here.

    Pros

for one it is a no kill shelter and they mean it.

    Cons

I have not found one yet

  • 129. Wonderful shelter

    by: PurpleSmurph

I love this shelter. It has the most wonderful staff and tons of volunteers. They don't put animals asleep unless they have to, and they never give up on an animal. The only problem is that they stay busy and because of that they arn't always able to have everything exactly perfect.

    Pros

    Good and helpful staff

    Cons

    not insanely clean

  • 130. High Commitment, High Demand

    by: voelker1

The St. Tammany Humane Society's shelter is old and inadequate to the demands it currently does its best to cope with.\n\nThe shelter has long needed an update and expansion. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the population of St. Tammany Parish (just north of New Orleans across Lake Pontchartrain) has grown far beyond its infrastructural capacity. For the shelter, more people mean more pets mean more lost and abandoned pets. That trend will continue.\n\nThe shelter's staff are doing everything possible to rise to this ongoing challenge of rapidly increasing demand. They and the volunteers are good, smart, capable, caring people. The services they provide are critical and are delivered with professional and personal commitment to the health and welfare of animals and of the community.\n\nWhile the community generally acknowledges the need for a larger, more contemporary shelter, the Humane Society competes with equally or even more pressing post-Katrina claims on conscience and generosity. The worsening economy will only make it more difficult to raise funds locally.\n\nSo: Exceptional people, inadequate facilities, growing need, contracting economy. It's a strong case for a desperately needed makeover.

    Pros

    Staff and volunteers

    Cons

    Strained facilities

  • 131. Great Shelter serving the area

    by: rtiger54

This shelter has served the St. Tammany area for as long as I have lived in St. Tammany (30 years). We have adopted pets from there in the past and used them as an asset while looking for lost pets. They have connections with the vetrinarian community and have a wonderful, caring staff.\r\n\r\n

    Pros

    caring, hard working staff

    Cons

none that I can think of

  • 132. Fabulous!

    by: Linda55

This shelter and animal clinic was a God-send for me and my furry beloveds. We received top notch, affordable care. The staff are dedicated animal advocates. Their facility is badly in need of a makeover. Its the facility condition that accounts for the less than 5 star rating I gave them. They do their best to keep it clean but there's only so much that can be done. The work they do and their compassionate and valuable presence in the St. Tammany community make them the most deserving shelter! I'm thrilled to see that they are number 1!

    Pros

    Great staff! Compassionate and friendly.

    Cons

Old facility - hard to keep it clean.

  • 136. Wonderful Staff !!!

    by: SweetieKisses

This afternoon, we had a double treat ! Dr. Maurter gave Ignatius Watson a good report on his post-op visit and we got a chance to get "le tour grande" at the St. Tammany Humane Society - the shelter we’re supporting in the Makeover II contest.\r\n\r\nVaughn ( the Director ), as busy as he is, took time to greet us and introduce us to his wonderful Staff,... well, some of his Staff. They’re very dedicated people. You can tell as they interact with the animals. They know each one by name. They know their idiosyncracies, likes and dislikes, how to "approach them" and/or whether to approach them ( at the moment, ya know ). Their facility is kept clean and the animals there are not "crammed up" into spaces which stress them out and provide insufficient "territory" for their psychological well being. They make very good use of the space they have.\r\n\r\nBUT, it is my fondest desire that they win the "MakeOver II". I’m CONFIDENT that they are a deserving organization, and I’m equally confident that they will put the money to its highest and best use.\r\n\r\nI was especially impressed with their greeters. Yeh, better’n those at WalMart !!! These 5 or 6 "pups" were located next to the front door and whenever someone approached the door, they’d go to yapping and barking excitedly and jumping STRAIGHT UP into the air "3 or 2 feet high", sometimes more, and wagging those tails the WHOLE time !! They are VERY GOOD ambassadors for the animals further inside . . . and even they are so glad to see you, you’d think they knew you by name.\r\n\r\n\r\n

  • 137. Loving Shelter

    by: abitabar

They do a great job with limited funds. This is a non-profit no-kill shelter that is funded only by donations and revenue from the vet clinic. They have a dedicated staff that ends up fostering many animals. \r\n\r\nI volunteer with them by fostering cats and helping with fundraising activities. Very conveniently located on Dogpound Rd. in Covington in the heart of the Tammany Hills area.

    Pros

Great full time vets on staff; no-kill shelter

    Cons

not enough room to take in all the strays

  • 138. Pets

    by: Wildred

About two weeks ago I adopted a 11 week old kitten. Her name is Angel. She is so loveable and playful. I think that this shelter did a great job. They really care for the cats that get. I wish I could have adopted them all. Thank you St. Tammany Humane Society

    Pros

The cats there are very friendly.

    Cons

The cats need good good homes.

  • 139. This is a a easy one

    by: PrestinaCrowe

St Tammany Humane Society, was impressive. The animals have room to play. All of the cages were clean. The staff was so nice and helpful. The building is old and is in much needed repair but the care of the animals are not affected. There are a lot of volunteers that make sure that the animals get socialization. Please vote for St Tammany Humane Society for the zootoo makeover.

    Pros

    5 star animal shelter

    Cons

animals still need to be adopted.

  • 140. adoption

    by: ruiz300

Our first dog was adopted from this shelter and he will always be in everyone's heart. When my 2 daughters and I went looking for their very first puppy, my only stipulation was that it not be a very large dog. Well, of course no one can make you a promise about mixed breeds, and it is often love that drives you. Max, as he came to be called, was a large lab mix who brings tears to my eyes even now 9 years after his loss. Max was one of those dogs you only get once in a lifetime. His heart was as big as he was, he greeted everyone who stopped by with his "lovey" and a smile, literally!! He rescued 2 baby rabbits (a day apart), refusing our request to "drop it", and he insistently carried then inside, very much alive but needing to be feed with an eyedropper. We will always remember the love he brought to us, his loyalty, his faithfulness and his courage. He is our angel and the reason we continue to foster/adopt.

    by: SwampRat

St. Tammany Humane Society can be summed up in in two words .... " NO KILL " ... okay, okay, make it three words . . . HUMANE and "NO KILL".\r\n\r\nAs difficult and laborious as it is to set your standards so high, as heart wrenching as it is to see "too much month at the end of the money" time after time after time . . . NOTHING compares with the gratification of knowing that you and your associates are carrying on the good fight for a most worthy cause.\r\n\r\nEvery little bit of help is like a miracle of its own right !!\r\n\r\nEvery little victory is a milestone !!\r\n\r\nWe often hear ourselves or others using the cliche . . .\r\n"One Day At A Time" . . . but when you truly LIVE that way, the exhileration of beginning the new day is rivalled only by the frustrations of things that could've gone better on the day before.\r\n\r\nNothing worth fighting for comes without a fight.\r\n\r\nThese people are in there on OUR behalf . . .fighting for deserving animals we may never "know" or "meet".... or, dare I suggest? ... even "ADOPT" !!!\r\n\r\nCheck them out, I"m confident they have the pet you've been waiting for all this time and just didn't realize he/she was so close to you all the while !!!\r\n\r\nCUDOS to Vaughn and the TEAM at St. Tammany Humane Society !!!

The Humane Society has been there for as long as I can remember... I remember as a child my mother taking us there to see the animals and how we always wanted to bring a dozen home. It staff was super nice and the kennels were pretty clean... they allowed the dogs inside and out and had a separate area for cats... I think the St. Tammany Humane Society is a great place. Everyone at the Humane Society from the front staff to Dr.'s and Techs always look out for the best interest of the animals and their well being. We have one of our pets was adopted there and he has been a joy and great addition to our family. The Center deserves the make over because of their beliefs and they are always striving to better their service, pet care, atmosphere for all the animals as well as all who enter through their doors. Every animal is treated with royalty. The makeover should be for them.

    Pros

    Service, location, staff, availability

There isn't a big enough place for all animals they would like to care for.

  • 157. Wonderful Shelter

I have heard wonderful things about the St. Tammany Humane Society. My cousin has adopted many animals from there and each one has been just as amazing and loving as the next. Keep doing what you all do so well!

    by: EllenRizzo

Recently, I had to have my little Maltese, Maggie, put down due to cancer. I decided to go to the St. Tammany Humane Society because the money goes to help the animals there. When I arrived , Maggie and I were taken to a clean, warm, room with a table padded with a sheet( no cold stainless steel ). The Dr. came and explained everything that would happen. Maggie and I were left alone to say good by and spend time together. Then the Dr. and an Assistant came in, took Maggie and gave her a shot that would stop the pain and put her to sleep. Maggie was put back in my arms and again we were left alone. I was able to talk to her as she relaxed and went to sleep. Then the Dr. came in and did the injection into the vein. Maggie felt nothing. After, the Dr. left again and Maggie and I were given time alone. I can never thank them enough for the respect and dignity and time given to my darling little Maggie. Everyone there works so very hard for the animals there.

    by: queenchris

when Katrina hit many animals had no place to go and were left behind and so many died needlessly. Stray Rescue of St. Louis came and rescued many and brought them back here for a second chance. They won last year and it's only fitting that a community that has been through the worst should win this time so that tragedys like what happened after Katrina may not have to happen if a proper shelter with space and staff is there for the community. Keep up the good work and you have my vote this time around.

  • 177. Review of the St Tammany Humane Society

    by: ztT4MP96421858

The St Tammany Humane Society does what it can to make lives better for needy animals. I have seen dedicated staff (Michele and her daughter who used to volunteer regularly, Cindy who is the most caring and kind person and who runs the Cat Cottage, etc.) and had very positive experiences with the veterinarians who work there. The physical aspects of the shelter are in need of work. It would also been good if the medical clinic could keep animals overnight. I know they do board animals but the vetinary aspect appears to be day time only. This is a no kill shelter and I know they could use any support and help they can get.

The St. Tammany Humane Society was the cleanest, largest facility I had ever seen. And every person I meet or talked to there was wonderful. We will return again when it's time...hope that will be a long time from now I do love my babies!

    Pros

    Nice people

    Cons

location is far from my house

    by: HollyHu

As a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing cruelty, abuse, neglect, and over-population of unwanted animals while seeking adoption of these animals into compatible homes, and teaching humane awareness and respect for all life thus helping to build a better community this place rocks. They do have limited facilities, limited funding, limited volunteers, limited employees but they make the best with what they have. The humane society members and volunteers are dedicated and care about the animals. \r\n

    by: SueCarter

I have try my best to send as many people towards this shelter as I can because it has great potential to be an amazing shelter. I have heard many an arguement "They were dirty, rude, didn't know what they were doing, animals were sick" etc. etc. That is because one can only squeeze SO much out of so little. Stop by and see how the dogs and cats are truly LOVED!!

    Pros

    Cons

    too many dogs

    by: BertaJones

Dr. Johnston is so great with my baby I won't take her any place else. While I was at the clinic 2 years ago I could help but fall in love with the latest addition to our family. I wouldn't go any place else!

    Pros

    Low prices

    Cons

    by: PaigeHuper

I visit the St. Tammany Humane Socieyt on occasion to deliver items. This shelter is outdated and stressed due to the large number of animals coming in. They really appreciate donations and do their best to get as many animals as possible adopted. They work closely with rescue groups in the area and are very dedicated to doing the best they can with what little resources they have. Please adopt or donate!

    Pros

Great to have a vet clinic with the shelter

    Cons

    location

  • 199. Thank for finding my love!

I got my dog toto from here a few years ago and it was great. The people we dealt with were very helpful and we had no problems. I would not discourage anyone from adopting here.

    Pros

    Cons

    old and run down place

  • 200. Great shelter and Vet

    by: KristenHarrison

Dr. Lisa is the best. If you want a vet who truly loves animals and is good with owners this should be your place. The prices are the lowest in town. The shelter needs to be updated!

  • 201. This is the place to find love!

    by: SaraSue

I have volunteered at this shelter for 40 years before having to stop about 10 years ago. I still send donations and am happy my grandkids can help me do a review. The staff works very hard. The conditions and buildings are not the best there, but the dogs and cats are taken care of. Please help our shelter!

    Pros

    Love

    Cons

    Space

  • 202. Awesome Loving Place

    by: CrisRoww

I recently adopted a big fluffy gray cat from the St. Tammany Humane Society. The shelter was very clean and the service great, not pushy but yet there if you had a question. The fees are acceptable because they include a spay or neuter, shots, nail trim, and a microchip. This made me very happy. Completely satisfied!

    Pros

    Cleanliness

    Cons

    old building

    by: wondergirl4584

During Hurricane Gustav, I got an email about St. Tammany's Humane Society needing volunteers to foster some pets because they could not evacuate all of them. This was my first experience with them. I fostered the sweetest, most lovable chihuahua mix. Unfortunately, I can't afford another dog right now, so I couldn't adopt her, but I did get to foster her until she was adopted not much later. The staff at STHS are so sweet and caring and obviously LOVE animals. And with the way the dogs interacted with them as we toured the kennels, I could tell that they were being well taken care of. As soon as I know I can take on another pet, I am definitely going back there to adopt from them.

    Pros

No Kill, Friendly Staff, Pets Love Them

    Cons

Smells funny, but they all do! (They made me say a Con)

    by: JenPyy

You can tell the animals are well taken care of by great people who are very knowledgeable and caring. It’s so convenient to have a full service vet clinic right where I adopted my baby. They truly have everything (except for some reason they have no tag machine). If you are looking for the love of your life I would highly recomend the St. Tammany Humane Society. As for this shelter makeover contest this is a place that truely could use the money for a much better place. While the animals are well taken care of the building is about 100 years old (seems like it anyhow) and it would be nice to see them in better living conditions while waiting to be adopted into a good home. I heard the have a fundraiser coming up called a Night with the Pawparazzi on November 8th. You can call them for tickets at 985-892-PETS. I hope to see you at the event! We actually found this shelter when they were asking for foster parents to help evacuate the dogs and cats for Hurricane Gustav. We took in 3 dogs and headed for the hills going all the way to Alabama with them. They were a lot of fun to add to our family for a short time I wish I could have keep them but I know they will find great homes!

    Pros

    Great staff, very clean

    Cons

    old building

  • 205. Friendly

    by: rkoeller

This is one of the cleanest shelters I have been too. They are also the only no kill shelter in the area. I also found out that they have a full service vet clinic. I will be getting all my pets vacinations done here! The prices are lower then the vet I was going to.

    Pros

    Very clean shelter

    Cons

some residents call the street dog pound road when its harrison ave

  • 206. A little surprised.

    by: ztT4MP66054031

Some of the staff wasnt very pleasant. Vet never even looked at my dog. Just kept telling staff to add this and that. "An estimate" of cost. After they were finished telling me what it could cost, I asked him to look at my dog concerning various problems. "Oh, sure!", he said. \r\nOver all, even after our 1st visit, I dont think I like this place. Will give it one more try and then decide whether to find another office. \r\nI dont like being given an estimate before they've even examined my dog....\r\nIt's a Humane Society for goodness sakes. You'd think they'd be more caring in general to animals. \r\n

    Pros

    Not to far from home

    Cons

    Several
