I wrote an indepth review a few hours ago, and it did not get posted. Very disturbing!!! Where is it???

    Pros

    Cons

unsanitary conditions - epidemic of feline URI

  • 2. Could do more

    by: jlnash

I think the SPCA of Eric County needs some professional help to get the animals more quickly adopted--they try very hard but I think there is still more they could do and I think they need to find the right professional individual(s) to get that job done. Maybe visiting other more prominate shelters like the ASPCA in NYC--they seem to have a handle on pet adoption and I think they would be able to guide Erie County in the right direction.

    Pros

The have a strong volunteer staff.

    Cons

They don't teach their volunteers enough to help the public

  • 3. very nice

    by: EdwardKolodziej

Depending on who is working at the SPCA that day is what type of service you will receive. They told me to volunteer I had to register and get adoption certified. Then another volunteer told me something different.

    Pros

    They are there to help

    Cons

  • 6. Spca..

    by: blazingbulletsxx

I've never been to the Tonawanda one, but I did volunteer at the Angola branch. The staff was never very nice to me, and didn't even care about people who were looking to adopt. The kennels and cages were clean for the most part. The big thing I didn't like was the staff, but I'm sure the one in Tonawanda is probably better than the one in Angola.

    Pros

Somewhat clean, Like the separates rooms for cats.

    Cons

    Staff is standoffish.

  • 7. Good job

  • 9. Helped us find a home for a dog we could not keep

    by: catsfancynancy

When we lived in Buffalo, we found a 1 yr. old stray and we had her spayed. We were planning on keeping her, but she did not get along with our other dogs, so we took her to the SPCA of Erie County. We left all her vet records with her. Several weeks later, we received a letter from a family with children who lived in Tonawanda and they thanked us for all that we had done for "Lady", that she was now a member of their family and she was very happy with them. Thanks to the SPCA, a nice dog got to be adopted by a nice family.

    Pros

    A great facility

    Cons

    none

  • 10. Poor conditions for a great cause

    by: ParkMaster

Recently, we have been to the new adoption service center located at the Galleria Mall, in Cheektowaga, NY. Upon arrival, we quickly noticed how frantic, yes frantic, the cats were that were confined in small cages near, of all places, the entrance door of the small store. Even though the store was located off the main concourse of the mall, you could clearly see the look of the faces of the cats that were scared from all the unknown noises coming from around the corner. Although the fence was closed (as business was done for the day?) it was only 6 PM when we visited to find no one at the facility. One cat stood shivering in the corner of his/her cage while the other obviously was trying to find sleep only to be waken every second (you could see its third eyelid trying to close as it was very tired). I would not recommend ever adopting any pet from this facility as you wouldn't know how long the animals were confined in this manner and what behavior they may have adopted from prolonged exposure.

    Pros

    very knowledgable staff

    Cons

    poor conditions for adoption services

  • 11. I like this

    by: brittanyTHEhippie

The ASPCA of Tonawanda has an over all friendly and clean envirorment. Their staff definately cares for all of the animals, and tends to their needs.

    Pros

They are willing to talk to you one on one, and help you. You can see, play, and hold/walk the animals to get a feel of how they are like.

    Cons

    Not really many cons,

  • 13. Very caring shelter

    by: Ashley0722

This shelter has great staff who are very knowledgable of each animal that comes in. I have visited this location numerous times and each and every time have been welcomed with great service.

    Pros

    Very caring and loving staff

    Cons

need to spend more time with pets.

  • 14. FINALLY - a shelter that matches its programs and services to CURRENT needs of animals & people in its community ... and they're NOT AFRAID to change their services to better meet those needs!!

    by: frogbowler

Great shelter, great variety of services, fair policies, clean facility, animals CLEARLY receiving appropriate love and attention, and a Web site that lets take a look behind the scenes, so we can see what goes into many of these animals before we see them on the adoption floor, and we can follow along with animal cruelty news stories as they're happening. But what I really like is that the staff is constantly updating its policies and services based on the newest animal research and findings out there. They don't keep one black and white policy in place that they've had for 50 years, because what we know about animals and their behavior and proper care and treatment has ADVANCED, and they advance their shelter programs along with the newest findings. Do you know there are new Cat Enrichment Programs there, in which a team of staff and volunteers monitor the day-to-day behavior of shelter cats that have spent weeks and months up for adoption, and as soon as those cats begin to exhibit signs of depression, their needs are immediately met....? Do you know they changed their policy on feral cats because the newest research proved that what this shelter and other shelters nationwide were doing to deal with feral cat populations was not HELPING, but quite possibly HURTING? Same thing with animal hoarders...the SPCA deals with this form of animal cruelty very differently than it used to, based on new knowledge of the animal hoarder mentality and what would best help these people. Overall, a shelter with vision, and a staff of people who put the animals first. We ALL need a shelter like this in our communities!!!

    Pros

They care about changing PEOPLE'S lives as well as the ANIMALS' lives.

    Cons

That there are not more shelters like this locally or across the country

  • 15. Erie County SPCA

    by: JEL

The Erie County SPCA is a cheerful place to visit, because the atmosphere is so upbeat. I got my dog there and I was really started by how well run the place is. The pets are clean, and they've been walked outside. They're ready to make friends. I go back just to visit and to use the pet shop. There are always children and school groups. The atmosphere is actually uplifting. They do a great job.

    Pros

It's a cheerful shelter - you feel hope.

    Cons

I'm part of the public - I stop in often and I've never seen anything negative. They're even there if you need help with an injured wild animal after hours.

  • 16. A Good Day at the Shelter

    by: Mittmo

A couple of days ago I volunteered my usual time at our Erie County SPCA in the small animal supplies store we maintain. It turned out to be a very good day when I served a customer who seemed excited about having just adopted two cats.\r\n "Cats!" I inquired, since most adoptions on most days were kittens.\r\n "Yes!" she replied and went on to explain that she had an 11 year old cat and wanted a companion for him. She said she adopted a large, beautiful Persian named Murphy, also 11. But wait, there's more...\r\n It seems Murphy was surrendered with a companion named Elmo and my compassionate customer could not take one without the other. She added that she and her daughter were celebrating her daughter's having won a scholarship to RIT. but she knew she would be lonely once the girl left home. She also knew that having another cat or two would certainly fill the gap!\r\n How wonderful for people to find ways to spread their happiness by caring for God's creation.

    Pros

Service to many segments of community

    Cons

More space needed within building to operate effectively.

  • 19. We love our SPCA Serving Erie County

    by: loveourdogs

Our SPCA Serving Erie County is the most wonderful place to visit - even if you are not looking for a pet. The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable and you can just see how much they love the animals. It is a very clean facility and the animals are full of love to all you come to visit.\r\n\r\nWe are on our second dog adopted at this facility. We had our lab-mix, Lizzie for almost 13 years. We recently adopted a silky/yorkshire terrier that we have named Sparky. He is just a love with the greatest disposition and personality. We were so lucky to be there at the right time. \r\n\r\nThis facility would be so deserving of a million dollar makeover that would help them continue the great work and rescue that they do. More kennels, more happy adoptions. The SPCA Serving Erie County is always booming with visitors and potential families looking for a new pet.\r\n\r\nI know you will be so impressed when you visit!!

    Pros

Bright, clean, happy place to be

    Cons

Wish it were bigger to be able to bring in more adoptable pets

  • 20. Grateful the SPCA is here!

    by: LolaFan1

I recently adopted a dog from the Erie county SPCA. I had been looking for a dog for sometime and every time I went to the SPCA the volunteers were very informative. Any questions I had they either had the answer or find it for me. I truely appreciate all the time and effort they spent with me. It made me feel like an individual, even when they were busy with other people or taking the pups for their evening walks. This is a great organization with a great bunch of staff/volunteers. They do truly deserve a makeover for all their hardwork and dedication to these deserving animals!!! Keep up the great work Erie County!!!

    Pros

The turn over of animals, people just love them!!

    Cons

Facility is very busy, need better play areas for humans and pets!

  • 21. A Wonderful Place

    by: Grapewines

As a pet owner, I have adopted at least 5 of my cats over the past 35 years from the Erie County SPCA. I have always found the staff to be helpful and knowledgable, and the volunteers very dedicated. I have also been a long-time supporter, donating annually. Over the years I have seen them adopt a more proactive approach to fund-raising, which is critical to their survival as they rely solely on donations. Their fund-raising efforts are creative and fun. They aggressively pursue animal cruelty cases and work hard to educate the community about animal care. Although they manage to "make do" with the facilities and equipment they have, they definitely could greatly enhance their service to the community with the help of a makeover. I hope they are successful in the Makeover Contest

    Pros

Helpful, knowledgeable staff & dedicated volunteers

    Cons

    Need more space, updated facilities

  • 22. A great place!!!

    by: MArneyLee

The SPCA of Erie County is amazing. I took in a foster puppy; that had just recovered from a broken leg and had pneumonia. The SPCA of Erie County was very helpful with nursing him back to health. Hawkeye went in everyday for a over a week to receive nebulizer treatments and the staff and volunteers were so gentle with a very sick four month old puppy. For about a month I called in Hawkeye's progress and Dr. Karen Moran was just amazing. Now Hawkeye is a happy, healthy 8 month old puppy! We adopted him officially in January. Now I am volunteering! I love the SPCA of Erie County!!

    Pros

Great foster program and caring staff and volunteers!

    Cons

At times they run out of room for animals.

  • 23. Highly recommend Erie County SPCA

    by: jammer1721

I have adopted many dogs from the Erie County SPCA over the years. I highly recommend them if you are looking to adopt an animal. You just can't ask for a better staff to help you in your decision making process about adopting animals that are going to add to much pleasure & joy to your home. They are very knowledgable. They have a very friendly staff. They pride themself in providing a very clean and healthy atmosphere for the animals. They truly care about their animals & choosing the best pets to match up with the appropriate households.\r\n\r\nThe Erie County SPCA is a place that I have been visiting on a regular basis for many years. I am amazed at the dedicated volunteers that spend so many hours giving their time & love to so many dogs, cats & other animals. They walk them, they spend time with them...and most of all they show they care. \r\n\r\nOver the years, I have adopted several dogs from the Erie County SPCA. They have been the best dogs I have ever had. And that is why I keep coming back to them whenever I am thinking of adopting another dog. I have also used many of their other services. And I gotta tell you, they are just great people to deal with...whether it be to adopt an animal, or for just information about your pets, or sadly when you have to put a dog to sleep. They are professional. They are friendly. They are very knowledgable. AND if you are looking to add a pet to your home, I hope you will consider taking a trip to your our Erie County SPCA. They always have a great variety of dogs & cats that need good homes. \r\n\r\nThe Erie County SPCA is a great facility...and deserves to win the make-over contest. I would love to see them win. The staff deserve it...but more importantly the animals deserve it. Please consider our Erie County SPCA for a make-over. I highly recommend them!!! Sincerely, Barb in Buffalo, N.Y.\r\n\r\n

    by: Chemgirl29

I have adopted one cat and one dog from the Erie County SPCA. They were in excellent condition and are wonderful members of our family. With our dog we have used the training services offered by this facility and they are second to none. The staff are caring and have become good friends. I wish I could adopt more pets from them but right now we are full up. I believe they deserve the shelter make over so they can continue to do the great work they do for all the unloved, unwanted pets in the area...

    by: BanditEskimo

Ever since I was child growing up in Kenmore NY. my family and I have been visiting the SPCA Serving Erie County. Playing with the dogs and cats and even taking a tour when I was in grade school. The animals have always drawn me back in to visit. My good friend is a Foster Parent for the SPCA Serving Erie County, and we get to play with the young pups or kittens and get really attached and Adopt, which is how we now have two Cats Katinka and Aislyn from seeing Aislyn at my friends house to picking out Katinka at the SPCA itself. We had such an easy time with the adoption process and now we have a wonderful family at my home.

  • 42. A whole different feeling

    by: LILRCA

I remember when I was young, I was often freightened of the SPCA. I thought they just picked up animals and put them in cages and some would be put to sleep. Horrible thoughts would run thru my head as a kid. Then as years went on I never concerned myself ith the SPCA and the good that they do, until I fostered my first puppy from them and now I am going to adopt him. In the foster process this little puppy(Jack) came home with me and I wasn't to adopt him until all his medical issues were cleared up. The SPCA took good care of Jack even when Jack ate a rock and it got lodged in his intestinal track and had to have surgery. They were there for him and us, always calling with an update. This made us feel less worried and we knew they were there for us. Well I now have a different outlook on the SPCA. I have to say this is a wonderful orgnization. The system they have to begin adoption is fantastic. The animals are treated GREAT and It gives me such a good feeling inside. All I do now is think of ways to help them and their organization and If I ever decided on having another pet, I would go there.Thank-you

  • 44. The Best of Erie County

    by: ztT4MP87042485

Erie county SPCA is the nicest place I have ever seen that shelters animals. The staff is loving and very caring of every animal that comes in. I have a friend that cats seem to know she loves them, but unfortu nately she cant keep them all. She has had several pregnant cats, probably dropped off. She always gets great help from the SPCA. If they cant take the cats right away, it isnt long before she gets a call that room is available and up she goes. They always treat her great. She calls after about a week or so and they will tell her if the cats got homes or who is left. They eventually all get adopted. This place is one in a million. They really could use more room and I sure hope they win.

    Pros

a caring, clean place for all kinds of wonderful animals

    Cons

    none

  • 46. molly and willy

    by: ztT4MP78985091

we got our dogs from this SPCA in July of 1996, and they have been the BEST dogs EVER. One of our dogs was ill prior to being spayed, and they had a hard time getting her to eat so that she could take her antibiotic. They called me, as the soon-to-be owner, and asked if I could come out and try to get her to eat, as we had "bonded" when we met. I really appreciated that. Molly DID take the medicine from me, was able to have her surgery, and has been with us ever since. They do a great job there.

    Pros

gives potential pet owners the real information that they need in order to be a responsible owner

    Cons

wish they had more room for more animals

  • 47. we found our puppy here!

He's been with us 4 years now, and he is the best behaved dog and great part of our family.

I adopted my cat Patches from them, and they allowed me to 'foster' her first, saving me lots of money on medical care she initially needed. The staff is very knowledgable about caring for animals and their passion for helping animals and helping people find that perfect pet is very obvious. \r\n\r\nThe veterinary staff is also a filled with a group of hardworking people who do great work with the many animals that come their way.\r\n\r\nI am so glad to be a volunteer at this SPCA!!!\r\n\r\n

I have not adopted a pet but if I were going to this would be the place. The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. They recommended a "humane choker" and it worked great.

  • 67. Dog Training Classes

    by: GoodDogKelly

Our dog has been in obedience training at the SPCA, Tonawanda location for a couple of weeks now. What a great program it is! The class size is small, there are TWO instructors who love ALL dogs (way more than I can say about myself) and who are patient and experienced with instructing this class. Plus, the dog loves it and is learning to be a polite member of our family.\nI would recommend this class to anyone who would like to increase the pleasure of owning a dog and enrich the dog's life, too. It's a win-win.\n\nAlso, we visited the gift shop and selected a new toy for our dog. It was a very pleasant experience. The shelter is very warm and welcoming to all who enter its doors.

  • 82. I Love My SPCA

    by: debbie1018

We have adopted 3 dogs and 1 cat. We visited many local shelters but none were as friendly or available to help. When one of the first to dogs we adopted developed cancer and died we went looking for a new dog (approx. 1 year later). When we found the dog we liked they suggested a meet and greet. they held the dog we wanted so it could not be adopted and we brought our dog to the shelter. Two members of the staff took our dog(10 yrs young) along with our potentially new family member out side together(2yrs young). After watching them interact they came to the conclusion that the 2yr old was just to active for our older dog. But they kept our older dog for a few hours while we visited with other dogs. When we found another 2yr old dog we thought would be right for us they did another meet & greet, concluding that these dogs were meant for each other, playful yes but well mannered. We adopted Beamer and he Jenna are best buds even today! Our family is greatful for the time they gave us and the wonderful pets we now have!

    Pros

    Everyone if friendly !

    Cons

    Not A One!

  • 83. Great Shelter

    by: unicorn558

This shelter has to be the best in this area. We've adopted dogs from them and their help and understanding is way above average. The grounds are very well kept, as are the buildings and of course their #1 prioity the animals. They have a petting farm, a quiet area where you can get to know the animal you're thinking of adopting, and one can see where the support money is going. A makeover would help them take in and take care of more animals, and a better home for them you can not find.

    Pros

    Very clean, organized, very caring

    Cons

    none

  • 84. MY SPCA is great

    by: animmo

My wife and I are foster pet care folk. It is a great program to help out the SPCA and the animals. It is a little bit of work, ok my wife does most of the clean-up, but well worth the reward. You get to have these adorable animals in your house and get to help them get up to snuff so that they can get adopted. It is hard sometimes bringing them back to the shelter, you grow attached to every batch you get, but it's nice hoping that the pet will get a permanent loving home. We have, as I'm sure all fosters have, adopted to our max in pets-2 dogs and 3 cats. Everyone at the SPCA is always helpful and glad to help you when you go there. They make the foster program much easier!

    Pros

    Foster program and helpful staff

    Cons

    I can't adopt more pets...

  • 85. Branch located in Angola is wonderful

The SPCA is very present in our community doing everything it can to help get the pets it has adopted to the right parents. The 'Whisker Wagon" is a big hit, it takes animals out into the community to meet prospective parents for a few hours. We love the SPCA!

  • 88. They do good work, but euthanize

    by: VickySkipper

The Erie County SPCA does a very good job of public relations...they are often on local tv and radio, and they make it very easy to get in touch with them or give out information. When they are over crowded, they send animals out to other less-known shelters to attempt to not have to euthanize. The public does a good job of helping to support their good work.

    Pros

    Very accessible

    Cons

    Not a no-kill shelter

  • 91. Just a terrific place.

    by: nutcasemagnet

I can't say enough about this shelter. I had planned to adopt an older cat before I arrived. Kittens are great but I had the freedom to give a home for a cat that might be harder to place. I asked for their biggest trainwreck and they pointed me to Audi. Audi almost died in the shelter because he had contracted a very serious respiratory illness. They took the time to make sure I was well informed of his issues and his prognosis. What I didn't realize were the near heroic measures they went to to keep the cat alive. His chart showed that he had had a very high fever, allergic reactions to meds and was losing all of his fur - for 6 weeks. I believe most shelters would have put the cat to sleep rather than spend so many resources on him. Not these folks.\r\n\r\nToday Audi is a beautiful, healthy, handful of love and neediness who wouldn't be here if it weren't for the Erie County SPCA. These folks were very grateful and kind to both me and my cat. In fact, we're both going to stop by tomorrow for a vist and to drop off a donation.

    Pros

They really go far out of their way to save animals

    Cons

    None that I know of.

  • 92. Great Place

    by: karenskapinski

I have actually brought in a Rock Dove that was badly injured and a blind baby Cardnal. The Rock Dove was rehabilited and released. I am not sure what they were able to do for the Cardnal, but I know for a fact they made his life better than where he was: on the side of the road on a busy street with his siblings dead. \r\nThey even have helped my friend with a feral cat the he has domesticated. It is a great resource as well as a last chance for so many animals.

    Pros

    Great for all animals

    Cons

They don't have the staff to help all animals

  • 93. Best shelter around!

  • 95. These people do an amazing job with their limited facility.

    by: AnneM

This facility has been around for a long time, and some parts of it look like they have needed updated for a long time too. This dedicated staff and the orphans in their care need to improve the facility so they can provide even more "forever" homes. This is particularly difficult in a climate like Erie County where lake effect snow can blanket the area on a moment's notice.

    Pros

Very caring staff and many educational programs.

    Cons

    much needs to be updated

  • 96. Allie's home

    Pros

    Cons

Maybe they should have a Money Machine for the people who have to go get cash.

  • 98. This is an awesome SPCA

    by: juls61

I came to the SPCA looking for a puppy because my maggie had passed away several months ago and it was time for another dog. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. When I finally found a puppy the director whose name escapes me told me about the dog I was going to adopt. she spent a good hour with me then when I called my husband to pick Scout up she spent another hour with him explaining to him the condition our new pup was in when he was brought to the shelter. My experience here was great. I would recommend this place to everyone.

    Pros

Everything was a pro. I love this place

    Cons

    There are absolutley no cons.

  • 101. Great local shelter!

    by: Milkdudbud

My BF & I adopted our first pet (a dog) from the SPCA. The poor baby was thrown into a dumpster and left for dead. The SPCA rescued her and know she's as much a part of our family as any child of ours will be. We are forever grateful to the Erie SPCA for her!\r\nThey try their best to make sure the right pets go to the right owners that will be capable of training them. \r\nThe staff is largely volunteers but that does not make them any less qualified. During our "meet time" with our pet the staff sat in with us and made sure we were aware that our dog was going to be handful and will need a lot of training because of her stubborn nature. And she was right!\r\n\r\nBesides just being a shelter they also provide puppy and adult dogs play groups, puppy obedience, first aid classes. All of which were very helpful to us.\r\n\r\nI think one thing most people do not realize about this shelter is that although they are called the SPCA they do not receive funding from the national ASPCA.\r\n\r\nWe are thinking about possibly adopting again and if we do will definitely go to the Erie SPCA again.

    Pros

All the staff I've been with contact are very helpful, knowledgable and truly care about animals.

    Cons

The shelter recently raised enough money to build new kennels but the rest of the place can definitely use some revamping.

  • 102. nice shelter for animals

    Cons

  • 103. Wonderful animals get a second chance!

    by: betsyleiner

A great place to adopt a new family member. I don't know why anyone would buy a petstore animal when there are so many awesome animals in shelters. Over the years, we have adopted many animals through the SPCA. Our most recent additions are 2 ferrets-Snow White and Prince Charming. These little guys were neglected and then dumped at the shelter. The SPCA vets and staff gave them fluids and nursed them back to better health and now they are with my ferret family.

  • 107. I MET MY BABY HERE!!!

    by: Gopgirl2006

I met my Macy Moo on December 22,2006. My brother wanted a dog and I was there to talk him out of one. While we were walking through the kennels I saw a pudgey little beagle named Macy (my favorite store) She hopped up and put her paws on top of my hands and it was love at first sight. I knew she was going home. Macy was the best Christmas gift I could have ever gotten. My brother adopted the cutest dog, who I named Penny. Our family was complete this summer. A friend at a dog rescue showed me a picture of a fat beagle basset mix named Bagel. They were concerned because he had been there for about 4 months. We went to see him and while we had him out some kids were making fun of him for his fatness. When we put him back in the cage he laid on the floor and cried sofly lying by the door. My heart broke and we took him home that day. We started out with the mission of getting him thin and then trying to find him a home, but we could not imagine life without him. Our family is now complete thanks to the SPCA!! The staff is very nice, the facilities are amazing, especially after visiting the local animal shelter.

    Pros

Animals are kept in nice living conditions

    Cons

its heartbreaking to see all the unwanted animals

Took a pet first aid course there a couple of weeks ago.....very well done and with a touch of humor here and there!\n\nThank you,\n\n

  • 112. Happiness and Love in One Building.

    by: jplori13

This is a wonderful place to look for a new member of your family,be it a dog, cat, bird or even a rat or reptile. After my son was attacked by a neighbors dog, he was very scared of dogs, including ours. The wonderful staff suggested we slowly expose my son to the dogs in the area with the pens that contained the adoptable dogs. After approximately one month of Saturdays, my son, let go of my hand and was sitting on the floor, playing with three young black dogs, one of which has been the love of our lives for the past nine years. I can never thank the workers at the shelter enough for what they have done for us. I am very happy to be able to help them in this small way.

    Pros

Wonderful, clean enviroment with very helpful staff .

    Cons

Need updates and space to make animals more comfortable.

  • 113. GREAT!

    by: mstmh

I adopted my Sprout at the Erie County SPCA. I had gone back to the viewing area before I went through the paperwork. I had seen Sprout's picture on the website and was anxious to see him in person. A very nice woman who worked there advised me that I could touch any of the animals before I had my paperwork done. I told her that I really wanted to adopt Sprout, and asked her if she could hold him for me. She said she wasn't permitted to do that but she could take him for a walk and taht would prevent anyone from viewing him. I hurried through my paperwork and practically ran back to the viewing area. Sure enough there was a family standing before his kennel. The very nice woman was in the kennel with her back to the family and when she saw me she turned with Sprout in her arms and said, "Here's your dog."

    Pros

friendly staff, well-cared for animals, clean environment

    Cons

a little pricey to adopt your pet, but worth every penny

  • 116. Dog Gone It..

    by: adidasjd69

I adopted my dog from this SPCA. Walking in there I had little idea about what to expect, but the staff was very helpful. They explained that I could look around and also bring a prospective dog out into their fenced in yard to see how we got along. There were descriptions of the dogs next to each dogs area which included their name, age or approximate age, breed and a brief description of why they were there, how long they've been there and about their personality. I took out three that day and I found out that the saying is very true that you don't pick the dog, the dog picks you. I would definatley go back and have recommended it to others.

    by: JennLC708

I got my very first cat and one of my dogs from there and I must say that rescued animals are the best kind!!! All of my pets are rescues from one place or some way. The SPCA is a great facility. They help little kids to understand the need to help and love animals and provide so many other services. Also, the animals there are so sweet and loving and just want a forever home to go to where they will be loved and charished! What a great place to have in this area!!! If I could save that many dogs with a shelter of my own or adopting all of them I definitly would!

    Pros

    Wonderful people, great facility!

    Cons

  • 121. Thank You SPCA of Erie County

    by: leandra922

When my 16 year old cat Pesto passed away at home, I took her to the SPCA serving Erie County. It’s hard enough to deal with the loss of a beloved friend, but then the added burden of dealing with the remains in the dead of winter…\n\nI called the SPCA and was treated with sympathy and deep concern as the SPCA representative explained my options to me. When I took Pesto’s remains to the Ensminger Road location I was greeted warmly by the front desk representative and she expressed her sympathies to me and my family. The paperwork was handled quickly and her remains were collected by an employee. Another SPCA employee also expressed her sympathy to me, which was appreciated and welcome by myself and my family. \n\nThe loss of a pet is a difficult experience to navigate. I am thankful that I called the SPCA in Erie County help me with final steps. The employees with knowledgeable, sympathetic and very helpful. Thank you, SPCA!

    Pros

    Cons

wish it was a "no-kill" shelter

  • 123. The best shelter I've ever found! And yes, no-kill oriented.

    by: 5kittyhome

First came into contact with them searching for a no-kill shelter for some abandoned kittens I found at work. Was surprised to find they support a network of foster families for animals who are not currently adoptable, providing vet services and any necessary medication, food and all other necessary supplies (like cat litter). We became foster parents to the kittens I found at work until they were weaned and of sufficient age and size to be spayed/neutered and adopted. We've fostered over half a dozen sets of kittens in the couple of years since and adopted 3 kittens from them as well. They are extremely gracious for any support, willing to help with any advice or assistance needed, and genuinely kind-hearted individuals. There is also a network of volunteers and mentors to support those who choose to foster. They take in more kinds of animals than I've ever seen any other shelter care for. And they comb through their network of foster parents every time they need help as an alternative to putting them down. In the peak season, they receive an unimaginable number of kittens and puppies every day. They are certainly overcrowded much of the year, but somehow manage to take care of everyone.

    Pros

friendly helpful staff, no-kill foster program, help a wide variety of animals

    Cons

    can't think of anything

  • 124. We Are Blessed

    by: castram

I am partial to this local shelter because my three companion littermate cats were there waiting for me and they have been a real blessing. The shelter demonstrated great care interviewing me before I was allowed to adopt and they made sure all needed shots as well as spaying and neutering were done before they left to come home with me. I had a very good experience with my adoption and the volunteers and everyone was great during the process. No shelter is perfect all of the time but this one makes every effort to do its best.

    Pros

sets high standards for how they allow adoptions, great initial care before animals leave for new home

    Cons

    by: outlawedsage

I love this place, it is like a reliable saftey net. I live in a heavely wooded neighborhood, therefore, i live near a lot of wildlife. when a small robin flew into the side of my house and suffered from shock, we took it to the SPCA and they took amazing care of him. they also kept us updated on his condition. another time a babie rabit was caught in the street and seperated from his mother, an SPCA mobile unit came to our neighbor hood to help it. Overall, its an amazing facility!

    by: mickeymolson

I love this shelter. The dogs are in rooms rather than cages, which makes for a more friendly environment. They have rabbits and birds, something the niagara county SPCA has no room for. Always very clean. Has a dog park for walking and socializing potential adoptions. Lots of cats and kittens. I think the "zoo" outside is a great place to take the kids. This is the best SPCA i've ever seen.

    by: Martusia

A stray cat found his way to my basement apartment window one night. I'm a self-appointed cat rescuer, so right away I went outside and made friends with the tom cat. I took him in and the first place I thought to bring him was the SPCA serving Erie County. Their generosity and willingness to take this stray cat (already named Big Cat) and help him find his owner was surprising. The shelter kept Big Cat comfortable while he waited for his owner, who later handed him over. We found out Big Cat had a UTI and let me foster him until he was better and a better candidate for adoption. The shelter helped me foster the cat by providing litter and food. They provided medicine and frequent check-ups, all for free. The care and attention the shelter gave to this one unfortunate cat was amazing. Even though Big Cat had to be humanely euthanized because of what later turned out to be his chronic illness, I felt that the shelter went far beyond what I expected to help him. \n

    Pros

willingness to help strays and foster parents

    Cons

    often overcrowded (not their fault)

  • 135. customer service

    by: LuGa

One day on the way home, traffic was heavy and as I was coming (I was traveling in the far right lane), I saw a space between two cars on my left. On the road was a kitten that had been hit. Stopped at the light thankfully, I got out and with a towel gently picked up the kitten and immediately took it to the SPCA to see if they could help it. The technician removed the poor baby from my car as I was afraid of further handling her and causing more injury. Unfortunately, she had internal injuries and they had to immediately euthanize her. I have to say the care and concern they showed for this little kitten greatly impressed me, as did their interaction with me. As a result I left a $100 donation check.\r\nljg45

  • 144. As Good As It Gets

    by: ztT4MP12967796_DEAD

The SPCA serving Erioe County is a great place--one which the community needs and depends upon whenever an animal abuse problem arises or when various species of wildlife are found wounded or disoriented for some reason. There is no other place which comes to the aid of these unfortunate animals or the people who want to help them in this community.\r\nIn addition to dispensing good care and medical attention, the SPCA in Erie County also sponsors clinics where pet owners can come to learn how to give medical attention to their pets should the need arise. Also, they partner with schools in a program wherein at risk youngsters can attend instruction in animal care and training. Such experiences allow such students to develop self discipline and they learn to care more about others.\r\nThis SPCA also maintains a small store which stocks all of the necessaries for successful dog and cat adoptions. New owners, especially, can find food, training gear and toys to help them toward achieving \r\ndesirable behavior from their new pet. The two store employees are very knowledgeable and thorough as they explain what every pet owner needs to know to be successful. In turn, those who volunteer in the store also learn valuable skills--how to fit a dog with a collar or a harness, or what pet toys are most likely to engage a cat and how to train kittens to scratch on an object that is presented rather than a rug or a piece of expensive furniture.\r\n\r\nTruly, there is an endless list of services this agency provides for the benefit of the public and the wonderful animals who enter their doors.

    Pros

A complete service for animals and people who want to adopt them

    Cons

They could use more space in which to exercise animals when weather is so inclement it is not feasible to take dogs outside.

  • 164. SPCA foster care program is great

    by: akuryak

I became a feline foster mom a few years ago and it has brought great joy into my life. I have two cats of my own and have always loved animals and wanted to find a way I could help out even though I couldn't voluteer on a regular basis and I found out about foster care in my own home. It was a perfect fit. I could help out the SPCA by providing much needed room and care for pregnant cats and kittens and in the meantime do something I enjoy. It is so much fun to have kittens around the house. The SPCA also has a wild life program. I found an injure pigeon in my backyard an immediately thought to call the SPCA and they were so helpful when I called and said to bring the pigeon in right away. The gentleman I dealt with explained to me what had happened to the bird. They were willing to take this bird no questions asked but I made a small donation for which they were extremely grateful. I know that in dealing with the staff the one thing that bothers them the most is that they need more space. They don't want to turn anyone away so lets work on getting them the makeover they so desparately need!

    by: kmacpeek

Ever since I have become a foster mom for my SPCA, I have learned a great deal. Lisa Meczynski, our foster coordinator is always right there to help with any foster needs and is very supportive. I get a lot of satisfaction from fostering and watching the cats that arrived to my home ill, leave healthy and have found loving homes. All of the technicians and veterinarians have been super helpful when I call with a concern or just an everyday question. I can't thank the SPCA enough for allowing me to foster for them and giving me the opportunity to be a part of the SPCA family. I look forward to fostering for many years to come. With each new batch of fosters that I receive, I learn more each time. Thank you to Lisa and all the staff for this wonderful experience and for all your help.

  • 169. I just wish that I could help more

    by: ourstaff

I am always saddened by the fact that they have to do as much as they do. I am always glad that they are there to do the work they do.\r\nI do some fostering of cats for them. I feel supported by the staff that works with pesky volunteers like me. When I sit in the lobby waiting for a foster to get a check up I am amazed by the number of people who use their services. I am even more amazed by the people who sit behind the desks and work with panicky owners of lost pets and the grief of surrending families.\r\nI just wish they had power doors.\r\nIt can be a pain trying to juggle creates and push heavy doors at the same time

    Pros

    They provide an important service

    Cons

    They don't have atomatic doors

  • 170. Doing great work and saving lives!

    by: pegmccarthy12

I volunteer at this shelter, and we have many programs to educate and serve the community. We are completely independent, relying solely on donations and grants for funding. \nWe help other shelters in the area by transferring in animals for adoption. Therefore, the makeover would benefit all the shelters in the WNY area. We've even taken in animals from out of state shelters b/c we have success adopting them out.

    Pros

    trying to be the best!

    Cons

    none!

  • 171. Love to Visit

    by: Sabres042

I enjoy visiting the SPCA of Erie County. I have been considering adopting a dog but haven't found the right fit yet. I will continue to visit monthly and to check their website daily. My 5 year old daughter loves to visit also.

    Pros

Pleasure to visit; as opposed to many shelters which break your your heart

    Cons

Dogs are adopted so quickly; when interested in a dog on the website it is rarely still in the shelter - this is also a pro because it shows how dedicated the staff is and what a great job they do!

  • 172. The SPCA IS GREAT!!!

    by: BellasMom1

This facility is very clean and seems to be managed very well! Have adopted two dogs from the SPCA over the years, and each experience has been wonderful. The Staff are very knowledgeable and sympathetic. I recommend the SPCA to anyone looking for a new pet! It's simply the best!!

I love the attention that is given to humane education for I truly believe that it is through this route that change is brought about. This shelter has a long history of existence and seems to be putting their experience to work. Keep it up.

  • 174. Great part of the community!

    by: seileigh

Hooray for the SPCA! Not only do they go out of their way to help animals, they work hard to involve the community. Their presence saves a lot of furry lives, including wildlife. They work with local stores to host animals, so there's really no incentive for pet stores to sell animals in the area. They offer low-cost clinics for spay/neuter and shots, essential in this town. They even work with volunteers to send therapy animals to local hospitals. We have a large children's hospital, and seeing the crayon drawings of a therapy dog just about made me cry. I wish they sold their ornaments/tote bags/pet toys at the mall, I'd be doing my holiday shopping with them!

    Pros

    Good people, great services

    Cons

Wish they had a kiosk in the malls

  • 175. Wonderful Facility

    by: nippity

The leadership of the SPCA Serving Erie County is an inspiration to all shelters across the country. The compassion for animals, successful neutering and spaying program, placements, and outreach to the community through its school programs are just some of the plusses.

    by: babygirl8281

I am a volunteer Foster Mom for this SPCA and I regularly donate money and items when I can. I have dealt with many people and animals here and they are all wonderful. They do all they can and then some. If I were able I would do so much more because these animals deserve it...and the staff and volunteers deserve the opportunity to help more animals with a larger and/or newer facility.\n\nI will be a Life Long member!

    Pros

Everyone genuinly cares for the animals.

    Cons

They still need more space so they can save more lives!

  • 181. Love the EC SPCA

    by: tubby2cute

They are a top notch SPCA. There is absolutely no comparision with the other local shelters. The Erie County SPCA offers compassion, respect, dignity, and love, not only for the animal but for the community too. They not only help with saving the lives of as many animals as they can but the educate the local community and offer lots of useful classes. I love this SPCA and have adopted by last 4 cats from them. Keep up the great work.

    Pros

They have a great atmosphere, and know what they are doing.

    Cons

They need the money from this contest to help even more animals.

Residents of Erie county should be proud of their SPCA, it is recognized as one of the most progressive and innovative shelters in the entire country. It was one of the first shelters to institute a pediatric spay neuter program. Also one of the few shelters in the country that cares for wild animals as well as domestic animals. Has an off-site adoption program that is envied by shelters nationally

    Pros

    progressive and innovative

    Cons

  • 184. Great for Cats!

    by: SiameseLover

I volunteered at this SPCA a few years back; I've been busy lately so I haven't been in for awhile. I have to say: a cat waiting for a home would LOVE to wait for one here! The cat room volunteers are great; they're super-helpful. The adoption girls are smart and compassionate; I miss working with them on Saturdays!

    Pros

    Cons

    Staff is Most Likely Underpaid!

  • 185. My Kitty Adoption Experience

    by: schipriot

I have personally adopted a few kitties from this organization. Those cats provided me with years of enjoyment. They were healthy and well socialized. I feel that this organization goes out of its way to ensure it's animals are healthy before being adopted out and it seems that they work with them to try to keep them a sociable as possible considering the shelter environment vs a furever home.

    Pros

Great support staff. Animals are well taken care of.

  • 189. The only place I go for my cats

    by: mumclare

I have had a relationship with this SPCA for over 25 years. It started with training classes for our first boxer. Since then it is the only place I go to find a cat. I've gotten three for my self and two for my mother. It's always been clean and the animals look well cared for. \nIt nice to see a few friends who volunteering there.\nI've never had a problem with any of my cats after I've gotten them home, they are very healthy.

    Pros

  • 190. Love is a four-legged word

    by: goofygracie

I am so enthusiastic about this shelter! The staff is very knowledgable and professional. They clearly are concerned for the animal's welfare. The kennels are spacious and include two "real life" rooms for customers to interact with dogs. There are also "real life" rooms for cats. The shelter does a tremendous job in educating the public about animal care and welfare through their public relations department, as well as their humane education departments. The shelter also has a petting farm with pigs, llamas, horses and goats. It is such a wonderful place to bring kids to learn about animals. In addition, they have a wildlife department with two dedicated staff members and of course, extremely dedicated volunteers. In fact, the shelter does such a good job spreading the word about its services that it has an extensive volunteer base. It truly is a place for everyone.

    Pros

    Progressive and educational shelter

    Cons

My first adoption of a little black kitten was in the fall of 1976. I have been back twice for more kittens, most recently the spring of 2006. I was very impressed with my last visit as to the updates of the facility. However, I still believe more could be done structually, to make it even bigger.\r\nGina Browning has done a fabulous job. My hat is off to her and all the other dedicated workers and volunteers.\r\nMarlene Tucholski\r\nClarence, NY

    Pros

    A special place to visit

    Cons

Wish we didn't have to have one!

  • 192. Best Place on Earth

    by: mbpengboy

The staff and volunteers at the shelter are the best.Whether adopting, surrendering, fostering, or bringing in your furry family member the final time, they are there with a smile, a helping hand or a kind word. Everyone is extremely knowledgeable, and willing to do whatever it takes to make your visit a pleasurable experience. The officers work diligently to see that any abuse is not unpunished. Then the vet technicians and vets work nonstop to aid injured and dying animals, with the wildlife department rehabilitating any stray and injured creatures.

    Pros

    Animals are the Top priority

    Cons

Too many cats and kittens are surrendered

  • 193. They really care about the animals!

  • 195. ERIE COUNTY SPCA IS THE BEST!

    by: naymeister

Erie county doesn't have much money to go around so I was highly impressed when I encountered the SPCA. Having moved from a more well-to-do neighborhood hours away, I did not expect the SPCA to be as great as they are. The services they offer are so complex and diverse. They manage to engage people of all ages not just in adoption programs, but also in volunteering, awareness and advocacy for animals. THEY DO SO MUCH!!! They do much more than the places back from my old hometown, which easily could have done more. This is why I was comfortable adopting here and plan to volunteer as well. I have referred a few people to the SPCA for adoption and am working on a way to incorporate a group of university students in serving the SPCA of Erie County. I am proud of their overall quality. They treat their animals like members of the family and they also treat each other as well.\n\nIn my few times of visiting I keep wanting to go back. Since I can't take all the future pets home, I want to be able to go back and help (and take a few friends with me). They really need much more support and help. It is clear to me they are stretched thin with all the different things they have going on, but it's all done with impeccable quality. I do hope they have the opportunity to have a larger and better facility for the animals and more staffing as well. \n\nYAY ERIE COUNTY SPCA!

    Pros

Great caring & knowledgable staff, diversity of services for all pet needs; great educational programming

    Cons

Should be open more ours, need bigger facilities

  • 196. Great Place for ALL animals!

    by: AMR

Not many people know that the Erie County SPCA helps not only domestic animals, but also wildlife. The Wildlife Dept makes the most of the small area they work in, and they take in thousands of sick, injured, and orphaned wild animals each year. There is also an educational barn area where you can find llamas and horses, as well as the remainder of the shelter. Whether you have questions about adopting a pig, or questions about the juvenile songbird you've seen hopping around your yard, the SPCA serving Erie County can help you with their friendly staff and volunteers. A great place that could use a facelift to better serve its furry, scaly, and feathered companions.

    Pros

    Friendly, knowledgeable staff

    Cons

    None!

  • 197. Care for ALL Animals, Not Just Dogs and Cats

    by: kstrobel

The SPCA Serving Erie County is one of the most progressive shelters in the country. I am involved in rabbit rescue and have traveled to shelters in many different areas, and this shelter is by far one of the best there is. What is so refreshing is that they take in and care for ALL animals, including birds, reptiles, rabbits, ferrets, even mice! The veterinary staff is tops in their field, and the volunteeers are wonderful. They have enrichment for all the animals, and provide veterinary care for them all. Many shelters won't even take in animals other than dogs and cats, but this SPCA has gone above and beyond by providing excellent care for any animal that is brought in. They provide community outreach programs as well. We are very lucky to have this shelter in our community.

  • 205. Fair to all Dogs

    by: LoveMastiffs

I'm a "big dog" fan: Mastiffs, Pitbulls, Dobermans, etc. Most places and people don't understand these breeds and buy into the media hype about them. In one month, I visited the SPCA a handful of times on my lunch breaks. I could not believe the different breeds up for adoption!!! First off, I was expecting mutts and nothing else. I saw a Neopolitan Mastiff, a Great Dane, and even Pitbulls! There were a few Beagles and smaller dogs too--I was amazed! The girls at the adoption desk even had their "favorite" dogs up for adoption--and they all liked the Pitbulls the best! The SPCA does not adopt out dangerous dogs, there's some temperment test they do on all dogs, from Chihuahuas on up. It's nice that they have an open mind about bigger dogs.

    Pros

    Surprising Breeds!

    Cons

  • 209. Rescuing, educating, serving, sharing and saving pets.

    by: bcoo

We are a small group working to save pets from a rural area. Erie County SPCA has a wonderful adopter base and they work to place pets in need that fit their adoption criteria. They truly work hard to help all the pets that come to them. Their administrators travel to share what works for them with other groups across the country. They are willing to take time to give smaller groups, like our group, a tour and explain some of the policies, practices and mission of their group. Even though they receive more cats than they can find homes for, I was so impressed to see that every spare foot of space they could find was spent in housing all the cats that they could. For those who do not work in cat rescue, perhaps you cannot appreciate this comment. Many groups that are forced to euthanize for space hold only a certain number of what they consider the most adoptable cats. I literally cried after I left their facility as I could see they were working as hard as anyone to save each and every feline creature they possibly could. Spay/neuter services, mobile adoption centers and so many more services. Small groups like ours dream of introducing such services to our community. How refreshing that Erie Co SPCA is open and communicative and willing to help others by sharing information, history, policies, tips and opinions. \r\nWe thank them for their assistance.

    Pros

    Compassionate rescue of pets.

    Cons

    Very far from our group.

I don't think I know one person who's complained about this place.

    by: BreakfastClubber

After we moved, our cat got outside and we couldn't find her anywhere. We went to the SPCA for help, they gave us a ton of tips on finding her. I'll admit that we thought they were nuts for suggesting that we check our old neighborhood--five blocks away--but we tried it and within two days there was our Twinkie sitting on our old front porch! She's passed away since then (old age), but when we do get another cat it will definately come from the SPCA!

    by: BichonBaby

Not only does the SPCA Serving Erie County rock, but they've even taken on the burden of helping animals in Niagara County--because the SPCA in Niagara County won't take any of its own animals! They don't get any money from the State or Town or County or anywhere--except from generous people like you & me. So give 'em some cash!

It's great too that we are workig with PertSmart Charities to bring in dogs from other smaller shelters to find homes for those dogs. Our shelter definately needs more room, upgrades to better serve the community and all the animals that pass through our doors.

  • 223. What A Great Place

    by: markschnerle

This shelter is the greatest. It has been identified as a model shelter for the nation. It has one of the lowest euthanasia rates in the country. The staff give their all for the animals and their welfare. The volunteers are fantastic and most do everything they can to help out without expecting anything in return. The animals are treated greatly as they wait for their forever homes. I'm proud to be a member of this shelters community and a volunteer. I wouldn't be a voluteer of over three years if I didn't think they were doing a great job. Everything they do is for the best interests of the animals. That is what it should be all about.

    Pros

Everything is for the best interests of the animal

    Cons

Not all the animals can be saved which of course is impossible anyways.

10 years ago, i would not have written this as a positive response. But MY GOODNEES how this place has changed for the better. \nYou will be greeted with a smile and a helpful face the moment you walk in the door. \nA genuine love of animals is the glue that binds every worker, volunteer and financial donor at this SPCA.\nNo other SPCA works as hard to find homes for unwanted animals. A true effort is made to find homes for the stray/lost animals found/surrendered at this place. I just cannot say enough good about this place. Visit it and you will see the difference love can make in an animals life.

    Pros

New cat room, new dog kennels, second to none wildlife help

    Cons

Not enough SPCA's like this one

  • 225. great place

    by: KIMBERLYSKIDS

I have adopted my 2 cats (Phoenix & Eclispe) from here and then last year I went in just TOO LOOK at the dogs and came home with Mya (Pharaoh Hound) she is the greatest dog!!! I know everyone says that.. This facility is so much better than the one in Niagara County - What makes the Niagara county one not as good is the STAFF- they never say hello to you when you walk into the door - But at Erie County someone is always there to say hello with a smile!!!!! \r\n\r\nThank you... \r\nKimberly, Mya, Phoenix and Eclipse

    Pros

very caring - staff always happy

    Cons

None really - maybe bigger fenced area for the dogs - so they can be excercised loose

    by: PamelaT

All creatures, great & small, no animal left behind! Thanks to all the dedicated and caring staff & volunteers. Would be awesome to have more room available. As a volunteer in the Wildlife Department we are a bit limited to space so we absolutely need more space. Of course, the whole organization could use more space and updates. From Wildlife to the barn to the dog, cat and small animal area's. We can all share in the possibility of assistance!

    Pros

    Wonderful, compassionate staff & volunteers

    Cons

    Need More Room!

  • 228. I LOVE THE SPCA

    by: tamolly26

I am a volunteer and I absolutely love it. The staff and the other volunteers are the nicest people and the most helpful. The animals the well taken care of. The animals are handled every day so they are in constant contact with people. They get all the attention that we can possibley give them.

    Pros

All the animals are well taken care of and get adopted out fast or if not go into foster care. Everyone there is very nice and helpful.

    Cons

    There are no cons.

  • 229. Great wildlife dept

    by: cldec50

The wildlife department at this SPCA is top notch. They are the most dedicated bunch of people I have ever met. Many of the volunteers are there so much they could be working part time. The paid staff is the best. They know everything about all the critters that come in for fixing. The only problem is the dept is crammed into a tiny little area that needs remodeling. Hope we win!

    Pros

    can fix any critter

    Cons

    need more room

    by: ghouldog

I volunteer here and everyone that volunteers or works here i amazing. Everyone is incredibly nice and they know what they are talking about. This SPCA has provided me with two dogs of my own. We love our dogs and I know that they are happy with us. Without this SPCA in Erie County I would not be able to help dogs find owners or give them some exercise. This place really does have heart. I love it here!

    Pros

    Friendly staff, very knowledgable staff

    Cons

    N/A

  • 231. A First Time Cat Owner's Experience of Adopting a Cat from the Erie County SPCA

    by: LadyIsabelle

My husband and I adopted our first and only cat from the SPCA serving Erie County this past June. We are both cat novices and went in not really knowing what we were looking for. \n\nThe staff and volunteers literally spent hours with us: showing us around, introducing us to different cats, discussing what to expect if we do adopt. There was absolutely no pressure, the staff just truly seemed to care about educating us about the duties and sometimes challenges of cat ownership. \n\nAfter spending a couple of hours looking around and talking with the staff, we decided to take one last look around, but weren't planning on taking a cat home that day. We walked into one of their rooms where you can interact with the cats and we found our baby! It was love at first sight! She was confident and walked right up to us for some loving. She was an adult cat who had been there for almost two months; and WE ARE SO THANKFUL TO THE SPCA for taking such good care of her until we found her. We were impressed with all that we received with our adoption: Our cat was spayed, up-to-date on shots, currently on flea treatment, microchipped and we were able to take her to her first vet appointment for free! \n\nWe have recommended the SPCA of Erie County to many friends looking to adopt a pet. We were so impressed with the facilities: clean, inviting, and definitely built with the animal's well being in mind.... Our cat seemed so relaxed when we adopted her. The staff and volunteers also went above and beyond their duties. They were still helpful a month after we adopted our cat, when we had a general question about traveling with a cat. We called and left a message, and someone called us back within an hour and was more than happy to discuss what would be best for our cat. \n\nThis shelter provides a wonderful and very much needed service to our community, our animals, and all of us who have adopted and fallen in love with animals that may have been otherwise abandoned...or worse. My husband and I will forever be grateful for the excellent care that they gave our Izzy and for enabling us to find such a wonderful cat that quickly became part of our family.\n

    Pros

Beautiful Facility, Helpful Staff, Well-Cared for Animals

    Cons

    none

    by: cskowronski

The SPCA is Erie County's best run animal care facility. Every time that I have gone, from childhood through present, there have always been knowledgeable and courteous staff. The volunteers are also wonderful. Their community programs such as the Rabies Wagon, which offers Rabies vaccinations to those with pets who can not afford to see a vet regularly but want to ensure that their pet is vaccinated against this horrible disease.

    Pros

Knowledge and Caring Staff, Fantastic Community Involvement

    Cons

    None

I went to the SPCA several times before finding my dog. Each time was a pleasant experience. The staff was helpful and the individual shelters are made to look homey and comfortable for the animals. I like that they make the shelter look like you're not adopting an animal from a shelter. I've had my dog 5 mos. now and am very happy that they helped me to find my ideal family member.

    Pros

    Clean,helpful staff,organized,

    Cons

took a lot of time to actually adopt the dog
