    by: j2l

It is hard for me to understand how Ms. Mosher runs a shelter at all. I have been trying for several weeks to get in contact with her about volunteering opportunities and a dog I was interested in. After having no luck with emails since she would reply but not answer any questions I wrote. I tried to contact her via phone calls to no answer or response of my voicemails. I finally get a response saying the dog had many applications and was already adopted out. Would have been nice to know a few weeks ago as we could have been able to look for another deserving animal. I cannot explain in words my frustration with the rudeness I have been dealt through Ms. Mosher via her email correspondance. I do work with another local shelter (CAP) and have never had anything even remotely similar to this ever happen. I feel sorry for these poor animals who can't get help from people willing to do something.

We got Max August 2003 after spending a lot of time searching for the prefect Boxer to find his forever home with us. STARR did a great job taking care of Max until we found each other. Great care was taken to make sure we were a perfect match. Max fit in well with us and our other dogs, and does very well with dogs that visit. He is a GREAT BOY!

  • 12. Sounds Likes A Good Place For Animals In Need

    by: Switch

It's great to have a nice shelter for animals who need a safe place to stay where they will be properly cared for untill they can find a permanent home. We need such a place where I live, the animals in my community do not get a fair chance. I feel so bad for them and wish I could do more.

    Pros

    Seems like a nice place

    Cons

    No Complaints

  • 13. I was looking for a playmate for a Beagle I had rescued a couple of years previously.

    by: ehickford

I was looking for a playmate for my beagle, Winston, who I had rescued by the roadside. I found STAAR in the process of my search, and that led to finding my precious beagle, Bessie. Sharon is so wonderful in unbelievable work she is doing with the shelter. The care and love the dogs receive is limitless. I love that the dogs have space to run and play as dogs should be able to do. Don't know who shed more tears when I adopted Bessie, Sharon for having to let Bessie go or myself for feeling so blessed in finding a new companion. Anyway, we're happy campers and I would go back to STAAR again to adopt.

    Pros

    Great adoption process

    Cons

Not enough people like Sharon Moser for the animal world

  • 14. There is no place like STAAR!

    by: emo

STAAR is a diamond in the rough. They are so clearly passionate about caring for animals. I have visited on numerous occassions and always met friendly extremely healthy animals. We got our aussie from staar (even though we live miles away now!) and i am forever grateful! They provide lots of space for the dogs and a LOT of time outside. They are even in *playgroups* of dogs that all get along well. It is a wonderful place in need of a serious injection of funds and a land grant!

    Pros

evidence of care and love of the animals

    Cons

    need more adoptive homes!

  • 25. Looking to adopt? Visit STAAR

    by: rune

When my wife and I first visited STAAR, I was very impressed. Sharon Mosher is a unique person who has devoted her life to this shelter and does an terrific job. We have adopted two dogs from STAAR now and they have really added a special touch to our family.\r\nI was touched by the treatment of old or unadoptable dogs in this no-kill shelter. These animals are given love and the best of care. \r\nThe one thing lacking is - money. How Sharon does the first rate job she does on her budget is a puzzle to me. She could certainly use some monetary support. \r\nIf you are looking to adopt a dog I hope that you will visit STAAR. Sharon is careful to match dogs to their new owners making for the best situation possible. \r\n

    Pros

    An Exceptional Shelter

    Cons

    None

  • 26. STAAR is a special place

    by: gayp

I adopted both of my dogs from STAAR. And we (the dogs and myself) couldn't be happier.\r\nAt first I thought it was strange that they had such stringent adoption rules, but when I thought about it, I realized that these rules and regulations were good for the dogs and for me. This is the way for good matches between both dogs and their new owners. I had a chance to get to know my dogs before I took them home and as I was a very inexperienced dog owner this was important to me.\r\nAlso the Sharon has been so helpful in answering any questions I have had concerning my dogs care.\r\nI don't think you can find a better shelter than STAAR if you are looking to adopt or one to support. And because it is a no-kill shelter I find that there is a special feeling at STAAR. It's a happy place with happy dogs.\r\nIf this seems too good to be true - just visit STAAR and you'll see I'm not exagerating.\r\n\r\n

    Pros

A no-kill shelter with a really caring staff - simply the best!

    Cons

    Truly none

  • 27. Loving Halfway Home for Pets

    by: ztT4MP22521493

It has been a very long time since I've been to the STAAR farm. But from when I was there I can say that the animals are loved and as a result are loving. Sharon is terrific with them and rehabilitates them until they are able to find their loving "forever" home. In some cases the animals that are there may stay there and are in good hands. You can tell by the way the animals are with Sharon that she loves them and takes good care of them. Finances were an issue when I was involved several years ago and any help they can get would only enhance this loving environment.

    Pros

    Loving, knowledgeable staff

    Cons

    Just need help with environs

  • 28. Wonderful Place, Wonderful People, Wonderful Dogs

    by: brooklynbella

STAAR is one of those rare places where dogs can live in a happy, healthy, and safe environment until adopted. A no-kill shelter, they have a great ranch for the dogs to run and socialize. They truly love the animals they take care of and know them all very well. We adopted our puppy from them and they really matched us with the right dog. We continue to keep in touch with updates and couldn't have had a better adoption experience. STAAR made a big difference in our lives and in the lives of so many great animals, many of whom would not make it in other shelters. Great people!

    Pros

    Great people who love animals!

    Cons

Not in every state in the US
