    by: pfred2000

The staff genuinely cares about the well being of their animals and connected the right pet with the right family. I've visited this shelter many times. It is need of repair and painting. The shelter spends all of their donations on caring for the animals. They need more money to take better care of the facility, including the ceiling in the lobby area and the parking lot. They could also use more street signs directing would-be pet adopters to the shelter. The shelter is not easy to find!

    Pros

The staff genuinely cares about the well being of their animals.

    Cons

    Underfunded and hard to locate.

    by: vloco8

Hey, my name is Ricardo and well this shelter is a possitive add to our community. They help all the animals and those owners who may not be able to afford the veterenary care that their pets need. The staff works hard to find good homes for the animals in this shelter. Keep up the good work :D

    Pros

    Staff Works hard

    Cons

    Not enough staff

  • 3. christmas visit to south suburban humane society

    by: dbrennan000

My daughter and I visted the shelter right before Christmas to drop off some dog treats and chew bones for the animals that do not have homes yet. The staff was pleasant and one young man seemed to have alot of knowledge on the personality of each of the animals that he was feeding and watering. It was a joy to see the number of people there with their families to adopt a pet!

    Pros

    kind and caring staff- cleanliness

    Cons

was not allowed to touch/pet the cats

  • 4. Awesome Place

    by: petsrocks

This is the best animal shelter in the Chicagoland area! Sure, we're in a recession, but the prices for animals are very cheap and the animals themselves have great temperaments. The shelter is very community oriented.

  • 7. To the South Suburban Humane Society - Thank you!

    by: MCulbertson

When I was 10 years old, my mom and dad brought home a puppy from the South Suburban Humane Society - a sweet little Rottweiler/German Shepherd that we named Hershey. Hershey passed away in February of 2008 after 12 1/2 healthy and happy years, and I want to thank the workers and volunteers at the Humane Society for taking good care of her so that my family could have so many years with Hershey.

    Pros

Kind staff who cares about animals

    Cons

In need of more funding so they can continue doing great work on behalf of the animals in our community!

  • 8. Great Shelter

    by: catlover28

I adopted several pets from this shelter and also have received a referral to a great vet. I found out my cat had FIV and was told by two different vets that I should put it to sleep instead of making it suffer. I contacted SSHS and they referred me to a great vet that helped educate me on FIV instead of just putting my cat to sleep. Thanks to SSHS and to that vet, my cat lived a wonderful and long life. Thank you!

    by: CoraBelle

For the amount of animals SSHS gets in everyday they really try to do the best they can for everyone. Although there are never enough people to do the work or hours in the day to finish it SSHS never gives up. My family has been supprting SSHS since we moved to the south suburbs more then 15 years ago. The effort the employees and volunteers put it is wonderful. Everyone really cares about the animals and people that come into the shelter. Keep up the good work.

  • 10. The best shelter

    by: chinkidluv

I have adopted from SSHS for 30 plus years.\r\n My older Girl Scouts collected food & shelter items off the shelter wish list, and the shelter was so kind to let the girls have a tour and taught the girls about animal care, costs to raise a dog, medical, everything ... \r\nI plan on repeating this again with my younger Girl Scout troop this year. \r\nThis shelter goes beyound just "housing" animals,\r\nthey teach the community and help the community with low cost help with their pets.\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Pros

    very comunnity oriented shelter

  • 11. Adopted my cats here!

    by: myoupel

I adopted my orange tabby, Ralphie, here in December 1999 when he was two years old. He's now 11 and great as ever! He was "Ralphie" at the shelter and we kept his name. I never had a cat before and can't believe what I missed out on! Ralphie has been terrific...healthy and wonderful manners, except when he's throwing up hairballs or eating plastic to get attention! We adopted Scratchy (formerly "Sunny") around March 2001 when he was about 8 weeks old. He's now 7 years old and keeps Ralphie on his toes! Scratchy had some heatlh issues w/crystals in the urine/bladder infections before his 1st birthday, but got him on a good diet and he's been doing well! Also had a few issues with litterbox recently, but good now, but I remember our PROMISE to provide a life home for these two cats, in good times and bad, which unfortunately not all adopters remember to do. The animals rely on us to take care of them and stick by them. I will post some pics on here when I can!

    Pros

Great shelter that's doing it's best for all the animals!

    Cons

Wish some of the help were a little more knowledgable about questions/concerns

We adopted logan from them and they were great! He was our first dog and they really helped us figure it all out. It was only $65 and they even payed for the neutering and first exam. I would definitely recommend them.

  • 13. BEST DEAL IN CHICAGO!!!

    by: kejsport

I love this shelter! In 2005, we adopt our dog from them. For $65 dollars we got Logan, a collar, a leash, a cute hankerchief, they micro-chiped him, all shots, a full disclosure of his healthcare, and FREE spay/neutering. It may have included a free vet visit as well. I don't know if all that is included, but I completely think you can't beat this deal if you are READY for a dog. I have no regrets. \n\nThe only complaint I have is that my wife and I wanted to have our dog meet the four dogs from his liter that were adopted before we adopted Logan. Unfortunately, the center wouldn't help us find the owners of his brothers and sisters. Oh, well.

    Pros

The adoption prices are almost unbeatable...

    Cons

    Nothing concerning

  • 14. Great Shelter

  • 15. Good Animal Shelter

    by: dogwalker29

This is the first review I've written. I think this is a good animal shelter and I want to help them as much as I can. We adopted our dog Katie from them several years ago, and it was discovered during an exam by a vet that she had double hernias. The shelter paid us $100 to help towards her surgery at Plum Creek Vet. The surgery was successful. I belong to www.give.com and shop from there and have SSHS designated as the charity to receive a percentage of what I buy. They have specials from stores with codes to enter for discounts. It doesn't cost me extra to shop this way, but does help SSHS. On pet food, I buy Pet Promise. It's made here in the United States, not China, and is free of antibiotics, artificial coloring and fillers often put in pet food. I lost two cats from the melamine contaminated pet food, which was highest in the "gravy" type food that they always preferred. I tried making my own pet food, but everyone including my dog were less than thrilled with my efforts at healthy pet food. Anyway, that's time consuming and they like Pet Promise. My dog likes rice, so I give her some once in a while. One more thing about SSHS, I am sensitive to chemicals, and the few times I have been there the bleach smell really bothered me. Bleach is wonderful for sanitation, but disinfectants tend to have strong odors. Dogs with their extremely sensitive noses must find it something to bark about. It would be wonderful if they had an air purification system, or at least some air filters. Maybe if they win this latest zootoo make-over contest air filters could be on the list of things to do. I keep meaning to round up things I no longer need and take them to one of SSHS's resale shops. It's one of those things it's so easy to put off and the clutter increases. Since "change" is the keyword for 2008, I'm going to try and make some positive changes.

    Pros

Provides a good shelter for animals in need of homes

    Cons

Could have larger cages; need air filters for bleach smell

  • 17. Caring staff and supporters

    by: lmajoch

SSHS and its staff are very caring and concerned with all animals and their well-being. On-staff abuse investigators who go out all hours of the day and have been able to rescue many animals from horrendous situations. The staff and volunteers put forth their best efforts to ensure animals are taken care of and work with them to make the animals more adoptable. The folks at the re-sale shops and the donations from all the various supporters allow SSHS to continue its mission of helping animals. The addition of a low-cost spay-neuter clinic is a great addition. Programs are offered to educate the communities on animal well-being and care are offered.\r\n\r\n

    Pros

    SSHS takes in any animal

    Cons

    none

    by: krissersisk

This shelter has been here for almost 30 years and is tucked away back in the corner. They do usually ahve a lot of animals to choose from which could be looked at either way good or bad. The staff tries to do there best to match people with the right pet. The place needs a lot of work but hopfully this contest will help.

    Cons

    Bad Location

    by: tripleaxle3

I donate to the South Suburban Humane Society twice a year. Every time I go there are lots of new animals waiting on that one special family adopting them. I can tell that South Surburban Humane Society will do anything for the well being of their animals. That is why they deserve a makeover. They could use that money to expand out to more easily accomadate they tons of animals coming and going.

    Pros

They staff is VERY nice, friendly and knowledgeable!

    Cons

    I can't think of anything...

  • 21. Decent...

    by: slundy

We had adopted a dog from there a few years ago. Had him about a year, and he slipped through a then unknown gap in the fence (I did a walk around before we brought him home and it wasn't there then). He sadly was killed crossing the street in front of my house. About a year later or so we decided it was time to adopt again, we went back to SSHS and once we told them what had happened you would have thought we had the plague. Hence the 2 stars for customer service. They made me feel as though I was the worst person on the face of the earth. Mind it, it was one person taht did this, not the entire place but she was the one handling the adoptions I assume. Other than that, this shelter is by far one of the tops in the region. They do care about their animals, and do their best to take care of them. I would recommend them for a first time adopter, but not for someone that may have lost a pet due to an accident or something beyond their control except for natural causes. The place did have a kennel smell in the back, as 99% of the shelters I've been in have, so that's not anything to really consider. Again they were very helpful and knowledgeable about the animals they have there, and their screening process was pretty thorough.

    Pros

    Very knowledgeable

    Cons

    Rude at times

South Suburban Humane Society serves a vital function in the Southern Suburbs of Chicago. Without their ongoing commitment to the rescue, care and placement of adoptable companions - the Southern Suburbs would not be the same.

I think that the people at this shelter want to make sure thaty match the right animal with the right person. The adoption process can take a little extra time but I think that is to help insure a good match. that have all different animals from your to adult and small to large. So whether you are looking for a cat or dog stop in a take a look. Save a life adopt.

    by: emilygruszka

SSHS is growing and changing. With a new volunteer program that is growing by leaps and bounds and a new behaviorist on staff, the organization is expanding its work on behalf of the voiceless. Look for even more exciting changes in 2008.

    by: JudiStone

South Suburban has been at the same location for more than 30 years. We are tucked away at the end of a street which dead ends East, so sometimes it is difficult to find. I have been with SSHS for 15+ years and wouldn't be there if I didn't feel they are worth their weight in gold. They work with many area vets that support our low cost spay/neuter program. The abuse investigation program has helped many animals and will continue to do so, as long as the need is there. We hold Birthday parties in our multi-purpose room and reach out with humane education.Kudos to caring staff of SSHS.

    Pros

    Caring facility, abuse investigations

    Cons

    location(both plus and minus)

  • 30. Good service to the community

    by: koda

SSHS is a busy shelter, and you can tell. They have a very thorough adoption process, and similar to PAWS Chicago, you must fill out an application before taking a dog out or into a visitation room. They are very serious about making sure pets are matched to a proper home. We have adopted two dogs from this shelter and both turned out to be the absolute best fit for our family...I couldn't be more thankful to this shelter for all that they do, and for giving us the chance to raise two awesome dogs. The shelter has a new manager and event/volunteer coordinator (not sure of his title)...I look forward to see where they will take the shelter in the coming years.

  • 34. Disappointed

    by: akunkes

I am very disappointed with my recent visit to this shelter. After debating on whether or not to get another dog, my husband and I visited durning an open house this past weekend. After finding a puppy we were told that they were not doing adoptions that day and we should come back tomorrow. So my husband took the adoption paper home and filled it out. I brought it back the next morning to find out that the puppy that we had our hopes set on getting was being shipped to a different state to be adopted. My problem is that we were not told that there was something in the works for these puppies and I feel that we were misled in the fact that we saw them the day before and they were avaible and yet the next day they were not. At that point they tried to pawn off a differnt dog on me than the one that I had wanted. I will not be adopting from them now or in the future.

    by: SGKlehm

Under the leadership of a new, dynamic, and caring executive director, this wonderful animal shelter is going to soar to new heights. Whether you are looking to adopt a pet, to get information, help with a problem, a sympathetic ear and a caring hand when you must make that difficult decision concerning a beloved pet, or whatever your animal need, you could not find a better place to go. Bless all of those wonderful people who stand up for and take care of God's creatures who cannot stand up for themselves in a sometimes cruel world.

  • 37. SSHS a huge asset to the community.

    by: sandipetee

SSHS has been around for over 30 years. They do abuse investigations, which most private shelters do not do. They also have a low-cost spay/neuter voucher program to help tackle animal overpopulation. The staff is knowledgable and dedicated. They take in 6,000 animals a year and never turn an animal away. They continually try to improve their programs and their facility. I love this organization!

    Pros

Community resource, does abuse investigations, has a low-cost voucher program

    Cons

Not in a highly visible area

  • 38. SSHS is opens their doors & hearts

    by: DawgByte

I have been associated with this shelter for a very long time. I have volunteered for them, and have been in the shelter on the busiest of days. The staff has always been caring. They take in any strays (unlike some other shelters that actually turn stray animals away!) They do their best in finding the right pet for the right family. \r\nI am proud to be a suppoter of South Suburban and highly recommend anybody to visit them!\r\n

    Pros

they don't turn their backs on an animal, wonderful staff, nice web site

    Cons

  • 39. I've supported this shelter for over 25 years

    by: MaryB6364

I have adopted a number of dogs from this shelter and all my dealings with them have been positive. The people there are dedicated to the animals that need their help. This shelter truly speaks for the animals who have no voice. \r\n\r\nWhen I called them about an abuse case a few years ago they responded that very day and took steps to rescue the large number of abused and neglected animals. This is after another local shelter dropped the ball completely on this case. \r\n\r\nSouth Suburban is a shining model of what all rescue shelters should be.

    Pros

Very caring staff who work for the animals

    Cons

They could use more land around their buildings

  • 40. For the Love of Animals

    by: jamiecole

I've been a long time supporter - 20+ years. This shelter is wonderful. We have a full Abuse Investigations department and never turn away ANY animal that appears on our doorstep. So many are in need of SOME place to go and most often if we don't take them, they end up living a worse life or even dead from horrible suffering. We operate 2 successful resale shops that help fund our efforts and care for the animals. We have 15 area veterinarians that support our shelter and perform low cost spays and neuters. Many vets also assist our Abuse Team day or night to rescue those who we are lucky to find. Visit us sometime and you'll see why we are truly unique in animal welfare.

    Pros

open door shelter, abuse team, humane education, 37 years old, dedicated to its mission

    Cons
