    by: Melon

I give a lot of credit to the hard-working folks who run this shelter. Somerset County is one of the poorest areas of Maine, and the shelter serves a large area. I know many people who have adopted animals from the shelter and have been very happy with the animals which they were given. I have had the unhappy experience of picking up a stray beagle on one occassion, and finding a mother cat and three kittens living under my back deck on another occassion. On both the occassions my experience bringing the animals to the shelter was very good. The people there accepted the animals, and I found out later that the animals had been adopted into new homes. It is a blessing to have the shelter, for both the strays and the people who want to adopt a family pet. Winter is a particularly difficult time at the shelter with the added costs of heating and plowing. I hope people will remember to support the Somerset Humane Society with monetary donations, and volunteerism.

    Pros

Caring staff do a great job with very limited resources

    Cons

Cramped quarters; they do euthanize some animals

  • 3. Dedicated People

    by: minnieandme

The staff, volunteers, and Board members ar very dedicated to this shelter and it's mission. They are constantly striving to improve the physical surroundings for all of the animals. This is an emotionally difficult job, and I think they should all be commended for their commitment.

    Pros

    Cleanliness, dedication of all involved

    Cons

I wish it were able to be a no-kill shelter

  • 4. small but working to acheive big things

    by: tamedtigress

although not fond of some of its policies neither are the people that are there daily cleaning the kennels and taking care of the animals. The staff are wonderful and want to do anything for these animals. People should do more for the little shelters they are the ones that need it the most and could use it.

    by: DonaldGritman

In past years I have had (2) dogs from them. They were well kept and in very good shape when I got them, I am at the present time going back and see what else they might have for dogs that I could adopt. Don Gritman skowhegan, Me.

    Pros

    Cons

    They need a larger building

  • 7. great place

    by: snoopyshaggy

Hey its a great place to find furry friends. My fred came from there over a year ago. My shaggy was a stray and would have ended up there had I not found him first. My sandy might havve ended up there to because her previous owner did not want her anymore. If I had a bigger place I would adopt a few more.

    Pros

    Cons

    they have 2 many

  • 9. A Great Place that Needs Funds!

    by: MollyJean

I volunteer at this shelter each Saturday, and I really love it. The staff cares a lot about the animals, and the shelter does its best to upkeep the shelter despite the limited funds. Also, the shelter is very clean. This is a great shelter, but it really could use a makeover!!!

    Pros

Great staff, very clean, cares about the animals

    Cons

    Not enough money, very small

  • 10. A happy place where we found our baby!

    by: fahamar

We got our dog Ginger there and we are so Happy with her. We love her so much.\r\n The staff at the shelter made us fill out a paper to tell them what good pet owners we would be and they called our vet to be sure that what we said was true. I appreciate that they checked.\r\nWe got a goody bag to take home with our dog and we were treated so nice by the staff. I would recommend going there to anyone who wants to find a beloved pet to adore like we have.\r\nGinger has brought so much joy into our home and we are very happy to have her. She is much more than our dog to us.\r\nThank you to all of the staff for help in helping us to find our Ginger.\r\nAngel Hamar\r\n

    Pros

Great staff that care about the animals

    Cons

Needs to have more money donated to help them and a bigger place would be nice for the animals
