    by: Moshinks

I don't know Second Chance Animal Shelter personally, I've only read about their blight for a shelter renovation and wanted to help. Anyone who cares for animals is great in my book!

    Cons

  • 2. First Impressions

    by: CallumandNatalie

I reluctantly surrendered an abandoned cat at the Second Chance Animal Shelter yesterday. It broke my heart to do it but the staff at the shelter were welcoming and friendly and helped to make a miserable situation better for me. I felt that the cat was being left in the best possible hands, not just knowledgeable but kind and warm. I had been looking after the cat for a year and a half so parting with it was not easy. I first called the shelter in October or November and they said they would call me back when they had a place for him, to my amazement they actually did (most shelters either had a recorded message saying they had no room or did not take my name and number). I'm still sad but I feel that I couldn't have found a better place for him. Thanks to everyone at SCAS.

    Pros

Calm, friendly, not clinical or brusque.

    Cons

    None.

    Pros

Place was very clean and the staff seamed very eager to help us when we walked in.

    Cons

At this time they didn't have alot of dogs to choose from because they had found homes for most of them...

  • 6. A wonderful experience

    by: paswiss

I adopted both my dogs from Second Chance about a year apart. It was a wonderful experience both times. The staff is great and Joe was very helpful. I adopted angela first--she is my Chocolate Lab. Everyone at Second Chance knew her as "Crazy Angela". Joe made sure I knew what I was getting into with a choc lab. He called checked on us and we have been back to visit a few times and everyone still knows Angela. I adopted Charlie, my Black Lab about a year after Angela. JOe knew Angela needed a playmate and he felt they would be perfect for each other. HOw right he was!! All the animals are loved a cared for at the shelter. Medically they are in great shape when you get them and you know that they will be missed when they leave. My labs are my forevers and if I ever want a yellow lab to complete my family I'll call Joe again!

    by: saljdy086

I just started to volunteer at this shelter and everytime I go I see a new face. The dogs that come to the shelter find homes quickly and are all very happy during the short time they are there. It's a wonderful shelter and I refer everyone I know looking for a dog to consider this shelter as the dogs are well taken care of.

    Pros

This shelter does an awesome job in getting the dogs and cats adopted.

    Cons

    It has limited spacing

  • 8. Our New Dog.........

    by: bigblues

My wife & I decided we needed a dog to keep our 2 cats company(OK, maybe it was more for us). We filled out an online application, & stopped at the shelter every other day.On one of our visits, we spotted a little terrier that had been a stray. Over the course of a few days we visited with him several times, and fell in love. The cats are still trying to adjust, but he has made himself right at home !! During his stay at the shelter he had been named "Stumpy", due to his almost nonexistent tail. But now he is "Benjamin". Just seems to fit him, and he responded to the name right away.During the adoption process, it was clear that the shelter's main concern was that the animal be placed in a home that would be in their best interest. It was obvious that everyone at the shelter were true animal lovers. They perform a wonderful service for our community.

    Pros

    Friendly, Knowledgeable staff....Great location

    Cons

    Pros

    Cons

  • 10. A truely caring shelter

    by: dlweldon

I adopted 2 cats from Second Chance -- Cindy and Thumper. Cindy had some health issues and Thumper definitely lives up to her name. Cindy is doing fine now, even though she snores louder than any of us when she sleeps in her basket. I would definitely recommend this shelter to someone who is looking to adopt a pet. Second Chance went out of their way to help with Cindy and her issues and I don't think I adequately said Thank You enough times. It was a wonderful experience to adopt our cats from them. \n\nAll of our pets have been adoptions. We adopted our Golden Retrievers from a rescue called GRREAT. Our Second Chance cats get along well with our GRREAT golden boys. I have pleaded with people who are looking for pets to go to a shelter and adopt. There are many good animals waiting for caring and loving homes. I have been successful so far in convincing them. Although they did not adopt through Second Chance, they did in fact adopt from their local shelters. \n\nI highly recommend Second Chance to anyone willing to give a second chance to a pet who needs a home.\n

    Pros

    Knowledgeable Caring Giving Loving

    Cons

A little bit of a drive from where I live

  • 11. Great People, Great Shelter, Changing lives of animals!

    by: adamfbc

Second Chance Animal Shelter was a great experience for my wife and I. I found King Arthur (SPENCER) on petfinder.com and then on SCA Shelters website. We immediatley fell in love with him and we were in the car 5 minutes later to go see him. As soon as we entered the shelter we were greeted by friendly staff and we were taken to see our new family addition. \r\n\r\nThe Shelter was very clean and you could tell that the staff cares for each and every animal that comes through the doors.\r\n\r\nI would definatley adopt from them again! Actually I am looking for another kitten as a surprise for my wife and that will complete our pet family. I will be going to SCA after work today! \r\n\r\n5 out of 5 rating for them!

    Pros

Greeted quickly, They knew what they were talking about. very friendly, good advice was given!

    Cons

I do not have any cons at all!

  • 12. Truly an amazing shelter

    by: JoKady

This shelter is truly just an amazing place. I have been volunteering here for just over a year and have seen how much they do for the animals they take in, and the community around them. They go all out to place the dogs and cats in the best possible homes, do vet and reference checks on people, vet and spay/neuter all the animals that leave here, and truly care about where these pets are going. They have great procedures in place to ensure the safety and health of both the animals and the staff and volunteers. There is always someone there cleaning the pets, or playing, or working. I've learned so much since I've been here, and have experienced so much joy in watching these wonderful pets finding their new forever homes!!

    Pros

Caring staff, clean facility, very caring

    Cons

    space.. need more

  • 14. Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract

    by: annmellor

I was referred by one of the Second Chance volunteers to use the product, Cat Attract. I explained that I was having a litter box problem suddenly with one of my older cats, and was concerned that bringing another pet into the house would only make the problem worse. Since adding Cat Attract to my littler boxes no further instances have happened. It's a great product, and thank you to the kind lady who gave me a free sample to try.

    Pros

Great care of the animals and adopters

    Cons

    In need of more space

  • 15. Dedicated, knowledgeable, innovative

    by: waterstone

We've been involved with Second Chance in one way or another for over 5 years now. All volunteers are well-trained, dedicated and compassionate. They do all they can to meet the physical and emotional needs of the animals in their care. Their work with animals challeneged by abuse and neglect is nothng short of amazing.\r\n\r\nThe adoption coordinators do their best to match the animals to new homes, taking the time needed to make the best selection regardless of space or time constraints.

    Pros

    Dedicated to the animals 100%

    Cons

  • 16. Second Chance Rocks!

    by: Jordina

I love Second Chance! My favorite thing about it is that it is a no kill shelter. So if you bring your dog or cat, then they will stay there and get fed and taken outt o walk for as long as they stay. The only thing is that it is very small in there. The front office alone can only hold about nine people, and if there were 9 people in there, then you would need to cram yourself through the crowd. Other than that, I love Second Chance. I would reccomend taking your dog there any day.

    Pros

    no-kill shelter, nice staff

    Cons

very small (we need to win!)

  • 17. The Little Shelter that Could!

    by: BostonBrenda

Did you ever read the little engine that could? Well, this shelter has earned that title, over the years Second Chance has gone from an "ALL" foster home rescue, to this amazing shelter on the hill. I BELIEVE this shelter has WINGS and whether they win the makeover or not, they will hold their heads HIGH and continue to SAVE our animals that have become unwanted and neglected from a world they were never given a choice of where they wanted to call HOME.. All I can say is Sheryl and her voluteers deserve this much needed makeover. I have FAITH in this shelter.\r\nSincerely, \r\nBrenda J. Wood

  • 21. Greatest place on EARTH

    by: RobLeeSam

My husband Jeff and I were one of the lucky people to adopt our newest family members "LUCKY" in October 2007. You see Lucky our dog has completed our family. Joe and the staff at second chance were very helpful with all our questions about a puppy (although at 9 months he was growing up fast) . We had to put our old girl down the year before and the pain that Second Chance helped us get through was put to ease with their kindness and compassion as well as their knowledge. We "bugged" Joe with a ton of questions and he was great with his answers as well as quick with getting back to us.\r\nLucky has brought us much joy and happiness as well as companionship. My in-laws also adopted their dog Suzie and Lucky and Suzie were not only at the shelter at the same time they are playmates for life.\r\n\r\nThank you second Chance for fulfilling our lives!!

    Pros

    The best background check

    Cons

Too small for the big job that they have

  • 23. Greyhound Adoption

    by: brandall

After 10 years of yearning for a Greyhound to adopt- I found Second Chance Animal Shelter. The adoption process is very thorough, staff are very dedicated to matching the correct Grey with the new family and the staff invested many hours to make sure the match was for a lifetime. I was able to find the "perfect" Grey for our home and after having been involved in the adoption process from the "adopter-side"- I decided to volunteer and assist with the dog adoptions through Becker College (where the Greys are housed until adoption). I also volunteer as part of the Orientation Process for new Volunteers. SCAS is very unique in their community outreach approach where educating the public on animal overpopulation/control of population is a crucial objective. SCAS also extends the education outreach to southern states/communities to educate and help control overpopulation. I am very proud to be associated with this shelter and believe it deserves the $1M makeover so that the shelter can expand the bandwidth to additional communities in MA as well as nationally to gain control over animal welfare.

    Pros

Best Greyhound Adoption & Foster service

    Cons

    none

  • 24. Saved many animals

    by: gailc57

Second Chance Shelter has taken some of the animals that my niece ends up saving. Everyone knows she works for a vet and is always willing to go the extra mile for any animal. She is the first one they call if they can't keep their pets, and this the shelter she always brings them to.\r\n

  • 26. Great shelter

    by: ztT4MP18663462

I adopted my cat from Second Chance Animal Sheelter in E. Brookfield, MA. I highly recommend this shelter. My cat was geriatric stray and the shelter had her checked thoroughly at the vet's which was costly, and disclosed all diagnoses to me. A shelter caretaker fostered the old cat until she went to her permanent home with me. I could bring my large dog with me so the two could meet before the adoption. She's been with us for 21 months now, is alive and well, and an incredibly sweet kittie. This shelter treats every animal as an individual and gives it a chance at adoption if it is friendly and not suffering under a terminal illness, including an incredibly sweet geriatric cat who would have had little chance at most shelters. \nI also like that the shelter puts good dogs up for adoption regardless of the breed, including good natured pitbulls, German shepherds, rotties, dobies. \nThe cooperation with Becker College is a great idea - many dogs and cats benefit from extra socialization that sets them up to succeed in most homes. We all need an extra hand at some point in our lives, and so do many companion animals. \nWay to go, Second Chance Shelter!\nSarah

    by: GlassKitty

I wholeheartedly believe that this shelter is wonderful. In January, my family adopted a dog from the shelter that had only been in there for a month, and I couldn't be happier with my Takoda (formerly known as Duke to the shelter). He's one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met, and I truly thank one member of the staff for matching him with my family so well.

  • 35. Second Chance is my Second Home

    by: ChrisM

I've been volunteering with Second Chance since 2001. When I started, we were a network of volunteers and a cat room in one volunteer's cellar. In 7 years this shelter has grown into the the best shelter I've ever volunteered at. There has been an incredible amount of animals that have been helped, and adopters who have been pleased by our service. I've met so many other volunteers who are passionate about thier volunteer work. I'm so impressed by the people who are there every week working so many hours to make a difference for the homeless pets. They're using thier own time to get to know the animals and match them to a home that's just perfect for them. I'm also proud of the many programs we have that serve the community. I really hope Second Chance wins this makeover contest because it means there will be so many more amazing things happening there.

    Pros

Level of care and knowledge of the animals

    Cons

    Never enough money or help!

  • 36. The best shelter!

    by: Cmm212230

This shelter is the best. They are very devoted to the animals that are in their care. They work very hard to make sure that the right pet is matched to the right adopter. They also have various programs to help pet owners such as low cost spay/neuter. They desperately need this makeover, there is no space left!!

    Pros

caring and devoted staff and volunteers

    Cons

    has outgrown its space

  • 37. Wonderful shelter!

  • 39. A helpful and caring shelter

    by: KathyBernard

This is a no-kill, community-minded shelter, great for finding homes, placing pets, offering reasonable (low) cost spay/neuter programs, lost and found assistance, great community newsletter and fundraisers, too. I really hope that throught the ZooToo Contest they will be recognized and will earn enough points to better the facility in any ways possible. It's nice, but they could probably help a lot more animals with more space and more volunteers. GO, SECOND CHANCE GO!!! WE WISH YOU ALL THE BEST!

    Pros

  • 48. The Best Shelter I've Been To

    by: Keyrie9695

About 6 years ago, my sister and I adopted one of the puppies from Second Chance. We later named our sheperd/lab mix "Carmella." She was the most beautiful dog, and we remembered that there was another puppy we really liked, but we were only looking for one dog at the time. About a year later, my sister was looking at the website and saw that one of Carmella's brothers were back at the shelter. I don't know why somebody would ever want to bring Buddy back, but he was the best dog. We picked him up at his foster home and it was like him and Carmella were never separated. We adopted Buddy and we had him until last December, until he passed away from an illness. Buddy had a heart of gold and a great personality, and although he was a 70-pound lap dog, nobody ever minded him laying on you. I plan on going back to Second Chance and adopting another dog from them in the future. The staff are so caring and the kindest people. I would recommend the shelter at any time. Thank you Second Chance for Buddy and Carmella!

This place is in this business for teh right reassons for the love of animals and helping to get them great homes.. They are not like some of the shelters out there that are out for the money. Thank you for being so helpfull.

    Pros

They have a lot of information to pass on

    Cons

Place is on the small side they dont have much room to work in which probably limits the amount of animals they can help

  • 53. One of the best

    by: DoofusAndDoodle3444

I have been associated with Second Chance for about four months now. I volunteered for them last week for the first time and working with all the people that I have heard so much about over the past months was spectacular. Not only do they know exactly what they're doing with the animals they know how o treat people as well. I have not met a staff that was either incompetent or rude since I started my dealings with them and I have not had a problem getting answers to any of the questions I have had. The animals at the shelter couldn't ask for better conditions or people to be taking care of them. All the staff have been or are currently enrolled in veterinary classes of some description leading to very well taken care of dogs and cats. And the loving and caring displayed these animals is unequalled anywhere that I've seen.

    Pros

    Empathetic, well-educated staff.

    Cons

    None that I can see

  • 54. First Class Facility

  • 55. Second Chance Heroes!

    by: NickFF302

My first adoption experience with Second Chance was a number of years ago when I discovered the shelter on the web and found the perfect pet for my parents when I was living with them. My parents have "Keeta" (aka Nikita) to this day and she is wonderful. I had my second experience today with the shelter when my wife and I adopted Garrett, a 5 6 year-old German Shepherd! The Shelter staff, especially Sheryl and Joe are wonderful for all that they do to properly match animals with forever homes. They have all of the bases covered at Second Chance and have the interest of the animals as their number one priority. I can't write enough to describe Second Chance, so you should stop in during their public hours just to say hello. The staff are super friendly and will make your adoption experience so wonderful that you will surely be back again!

    Pros

    Great network of experienced staff!

    Cons

    None

  • 56. Recent Volunteer Orientation

    by: ccarpenter34

I recently attended a volunteer orientation session with about 25-30 other people. The volunteer coordinator was wonderful, took her time to explain everything clearly and there was also a handbook distributed which is very helpful. We could see caring staff busily working to clean cages, walk dogs, play with the cats, etc. Great group of volunteers, and this shelter really deserves a makeover! They are doing a wonderful job with what resources they have, imagine how much more they could do!\r\n\r\n

    Pros

    Very Clean and well organized

    Cons

    More space needed!

    Cons

  • 59. Sounds like a worthy candidate for a makeover or some money.

    by: AnneM

This group is known for its great programs for spaying, neutering, vaccinating, educating, placing animals for adoption, fostering,....the list goes on and on. I believe they would be a good choice for a big batch of money to help them in their endeavors.

    Pros

I had heard the Bear story and was really touched by it.

    Cons

none, except a larger facility would be helpful

  • 60. Animal Haven gives pets a second chance at life

    by: saranan

I find the Second Chance Animal Shelter to be one of the few in the area that takes the time to carefully screen all applicants to be certain they are matched with the right dog/cat for them. They take great care in all the animals and their facility. They are a no kill shelter and will go to great strides to rehabilitate a pet to get it into a forever home. The use of Foster homes one great way they do this. On site Veterinary care, spay/neuter clinics. Ferril cat spay/neuter clinics are just one of the many services Secon Chance provides to their community and surrounding communities. I would highly recomend anyone looking for a pet contact Second Chance.

  • 63. My opinion of Second Chance Animal Shelter

    by: Wonderwench2

Having once lived down the street from this shelter\r\nI have visited it on several occations. One time I had\r\nto retreave my own cat who was accidently "rescued"\r\nby one of the neighborhood kids. That day the staff helped me locate my missing cat, Jake and allowed me to adopt a wonderfull kitten who he had made friends with while at the shelter.Over the past few years I have stopped by to drop of donations of goods from the "Wish"list and I regularly donate funds on the annivesary dates of my pets deaths.\r\nThough I have not adopted any pets recently, due to\r\nthe fact one dog and eight cats are enough,I hope\r\nto always continue to support this wonderful shelter.

    Pros

Well kept animal cages with clean animals inside them

    Cons

    capacity for cats was full

  • 64. An absolute miracle to Central Mass!!

    by: pinkfleur87

I never would have thought that I would be an absolutely devoted animal person until I went to Second Chance Animal Shelter. My sister adopted Anubis there five years ago, and my life has changed for the better. From having Anubis, I have learned about responsibility and how much I really love animals. \r\n\r\nA few weeks ago, I decided to sign up to do volunteer work at this animal shelter. I have only done the orientation so far, and it was done very well. Very organized, well-structured, and the staff member gave us an overview on each room (primarily a tour). In addition, each volunteer was able to choose the schedule that best fit their needs (pretty flexible) and choose the area they were the most interested in. \r\n\r\nI'll post another update as soon as I begin doing volunteer work, but I would definitely recommend that you stop by at Second Chance if you live around in the Brookfield area. It's a small shelter, but there's a lot of friendly and helpful people!

    Pros

    Excellent service, staff, and animals!!

    Cons

If only the shelter was a little bigger...

  • 67. Spay-Neuter Program Priceless!

    by: Caitch212

I was looking for an alternative when it came down to getting my Cat spayed, it was going to cost me around $300 at my normal vet. That is $300 this college student doesn't have! I looked around and talked to some people and found out that The Second Chance Shelter had reduced coast spay-neuter program based on need. It was amazing and totally affordable. The one minor annoyance I found was that the appointment was rescheduled three different times. But over all it was a great experience!

    Pros

    Great services

    Cons

    Off the beaten path

  • 68. The Best Animal Shelter

    by: jgianerino

Second Chance Animal Shelter is wonderful. I can't say enough great things about it. I would like to start with the staff. Joe is very caring about every dog there. I had the pleasure of speaking to him on the phone when I adopted my Yellow Lab puppy Stormy. He truly cares that every dog finds a loving forever home. Then there is Joe Jr. who was there when we picked up our puppy, he answered all our questions. He then gave us a packet full of coupons, gifts and information about our new adoption. \r\nThere is the spay/neuter program that I feel is an excellent program to have in our area. I have used this service as well for my cat Teacup. The vet tech Kristen (who is also Teacup's aunt ) was very nice and I knew my baby would be safe and cared for during her surgery.\r\nKristen also has come to my Girl Scout troop meeting and educated my troop about animal overpopulation, as well as animal safety and also animal care. \r\nWe are so lucky to have this shelter and it's services .\r\nThank you Second Chance !!!

  • 74. low-cost spay /neuter program

    by: folklorekennel

Since I'm unemployed and was asked to take in an Alpha canine rescue, I needed to get him neutered quickly, at minimal expense. I also had a cat that had driven me crazy during her heats for 4 yrs.!\r\n\r\nI reserched several programs. In the end, Second Chance offered the best, closest & cheapest options. The cat was spayed right at the shelter, and the dog went to a vet hospital down the street. Both recovered smoothly, and they are both easier to get along with now!\r\n\r\nTHANK YOU FOR THIS PROGRAM!!!

    Pros

    several spay / neuter programs

    Cons

initially only promoted most costly, lengthly delays

  • 75. 2nd Chance Animal Shelter

    by: MBWest

I have adopted from Second Chance Animal Shelter and have basically dealt with Diane Doherty. She has a unique way of placing a specific animal with you and your personality. She knows what will fit and what won't. I know that personally she has hit it right on the mark with me each and every time. I have had my animals spayed at Second Chance and it is well run, clean and they answer all of your questions. Every service they offer is for the animals as the number one priority! This is amazing to me. It has been nice to see them grow from a small shelter to what they have become and it is all because of their great love for animals.

  • 84. What a place!

    by: Susan50

I have been dealing with SCAS for the past 4 years. I have adopted three animals from them. I am especially fond of the older animal. SCAS tries to make each animal feel special. If possible they will place an animal in a foster home to enable the animal to be more comfortable adjusting from the former home. \r\nSCAS has a great relationship with Becker College, where dogs and cats are used in their Animal Care programs. The animals receive vet care, obediance training, lots of love, and exposure to many social situations.\r\nSCAS makes sure every adoptee leaving the shelter has been neutered or spayed and is up-to-date on all its shots. If an animal needs medical treatment, they make sure the treatment is receive prior to adoption.\r\nSCAS is a wonderful place to get a 'second chance'.

    by: pamelaine

A little grey kitten was found in a trash can in nearby Southbridge, and the person who found her could not keep her. We adopted Lucky, and she quickly became part of our family. Then the neighborhood cat started coming around, who we christened "Boyfriend". Second Chance gave us a low cost option to get Lucky fixed before we ended up with a houseful of kittens! They were so friendly and helpful, and answered all of our questions and concerns. Sadly, Lucky decided to cross the street, and didn't make it home. If and when we decide to get a new cat (once our hearts heal a bit more) we will definately be back to Second Chance.

    by: rk92

I volunteer with the dogs at this shelter, and they definatly take amazing care of their animals. They are careful with procedures, and with who they adopt them out to. It's like a family caring for their own pets!! You should come visit!!

    Pros

    Care of animals, clean, friendly

    Cons

    Need space

  • 115. Good Shelter, good outreach

    by: suehaslam

Went there with a brownie troop and the staff was helpful and took time showing all the animals to the children. The place was clean and the animals are well taken care of. I've bumped into volunteers at different times and they are so enthusiastic about the place. There is a bin for pet food at the Stop and Shop and I often find myself buying extra and putting into their bin for the animals. It's a great and easy way to have me donate to them with just a few extra dollars on my grocery bill. No check, no mailing etc.

    Pros

Committed staff, good outreach for kids.

    Cons

    Not enough puppies.

  • 116. Excellent Shelter

    by: FunkyWalrus

Great shelter. They truly care for each animal that passes through their doors. Through their network of volunteers they are able to really work animals that have special needs before being adopted. Through Second Change we adopted the best little Pit Bull puppy ever, and he is truly a part of our family now.

    Pros

No-kill shelter allows staff to be truly dedicated to helping each animal.

    Cons

Not a lot of public hours, but you can make an appointment.

  • 121. Awesome Shelter, Wonderful Volunteers, Loving hearts

    by: Beckster

This a pretty small shelter out here in the country. There is room for perhaps 14 dogs and 14 cats - and that unfortunately is just not room enough. Second Chance outgrew its walls before it even had time to celebrate it's first anniversary in it's own building. The demand for services here is really unbelievable - surrenders, abandoned pets, drop offs, animal control surrenders - not to mention all that the shelter is doing in the community - spay/ neuter, school outreach, girl scout visits, school visits....The employees and volunteers treat all of the animals as if they were their own. It's not the same as a forever home, but the fabulous staff make every animal feel loved. The animals are vetted, healthy, and well fed and clean...the grounds are slowly taking shape but still there is so much that could be done.

    Pros

    Love of Animals, Volunteers, Dedication,

    Cons

    Too small, not enough space

  • 122. They were great.

    by: tbruso

Second chance spent time with us , trying to find the right dog. We actually got a dog elsewhere, but that was not a reflection on them . They were very helpful and will be the first place I go to if I am ever in need of another dog.

    Pros

They were very good at helping us in our choice of dog.

    Cons

None that I can think of

  • 125. Giving all animals a second chance

    by: MissMar0108

I have had the pleasure of recently volunteering some of my time at the Second Chance Animal Shelter in East Brookfield, MA. This no-kill shelter (they do no believe in "making space" for new animals, but instead make extensive efforts to get each and every animal that enters the shelter adopted), though somewhat small, is absolutely amazing. It runs almost solely on a volunteer staff, which I believe truly demonstrates how much these people care about the animals that come and go in the shelter. The staff is knowledgeable about each and every animal that enters into Second Chance and makes the adoption process extensive so that no animal is wrongly adopted, but no animal is left behind either. \n\nSecond Chance also offers a low-cost spay and neuter program, which assists worldwide in the efforts to control pet overpopulation, which many of us know is a severe problem in today's world. This demonstrates the knowledge that prevention is truly key.\n\nAdditionally, those at the shelter also work to educate the public, which is particularly unique. They target today's youth, those who hold the future in their hands. These educational and awareness outreaches are done for free and offered widely. \n\nI most certainly applaud Second Chance for its work with homeless, unwanted animals and just hope I can help to convey a small amount of its magnificence to others.

    Pros

the animals are provided with excellent care, the staff is extensive and helpful to potential owners

    Cons

the shelter contains limited space, there are limited resources

  • 126. Love this shelter!

    by: Faye

This shelter is great. I got my Lucy there 3 months ago and the folks were very helpful, kind and very caring in matching me with the right dog. Lucy came to me in great shape with all her shots and spayed and just everything was so well done. The only downside to the shelter is that it is too small. I like to imagine the things these people could do for animals if they had more space. I like the people and how they run the shelter so much that I will be volunteering there!

    Pros

Friendly people who really care about the animals

    Cons

very small area for the animals to stay in

  • 132. Great place for needy animals

    by: SeaRiggs

This shelter is staffed by friendly caring people. The animals are well loved, and cared for. Our family had fallen on a financial hardship and couldnt afford to get her spayed....the shelter made sure she was up to date with her shots and got her spayed at no cost to us. It helped our family so much that the staff at Second Chance loved our dog like we do. They have found loving homes for many animals and continue to never turn a furry friend away. If you are considering adoption, this is the place to go.

    Pros

Animals get a second chance at life

    Cons

alot of animals needs a bigger space

  • 133. I love both the dogs and cats

    by: jackie51

I adopted a cat from the shelter after fostering him for a month. I didn't realize how attached I'd become to the little devil. He was the love of my life. I would visit with him every time I went to volunteer at the shelter. When I brought Peter in to see someone who wanted to adopt him, I just couldn't part with him. With the help of Diane, I made the right choice and took Peter back home with me. When the time is right, I'm sure I'll be bringing home a dog, also. Second Chance is like a second family to me. The volunteers are the greatest people I have ever met. They are so caring and so much fun. We all love the animals so much and we really share something special. I just wish they had more space for the dogs and cats and more office and vet space. Things are so confined, but we all make the most of it.

    Pros

the best second family I have

    Cons

    bigger space for the animals

    by: amykady

We adopted Thomas, an elder cat ( we call him the old man ) from Second Chance. When he came to them he had so many issues from being abandoned on the streets, but by the time we adopted him he had been in a loving foster home and had received the best vet care. He is now a healthy, extremely happy old man. This shelter does wonderful things for it's residents.

    Pros

    Loving and caring

    Cons

    always could use more space

  • 137. the best, but getting better

    by: fritzi52

I rated Second Chance as a 4 in all areas, to reflect the fact that although I think we do an excellent job, everyone who works here is constantly seeking ways in which to improve.\nIn the 4 years I have been with Second Chance, we have made huge strides in all areas (cleanliness, medical care, organization, outreach and education, physical plant, internal communication, spay/neuter programs, etc.). \nThe financial resources we get are stretched to the absolute limit - there is no waste. Public relations have a high priority, and due to that, we can count on regular support from our community. This isn't limited to monetary donations. We get food, litter, bedding, cages and carriers, office supplies - you name it, we get it. Our staff takes advantage of recycling programs, so we get donations of printer catridges, etc. We have volunteers who work as grant writers. Due to there efforts, we have greatly expanded our spay/neuter programs, among other things.\nWhen people walk through our door for the first time, they are "wowed" by the friendly, homey feeling they get. They often comment on how good it smells. We all work hard to make sure they keep coming back, whether to adopt, donate, volunteer, bring friends, or just to check in and see how we're doing.

    Pros

    always striving to improve

    Cons

    need more space badly

  • 142. Match Made In Heaven

    by: Irishgrl

Just by chance, we found Second Chance Animal Shelter online. We fell in love with Iggy, aka Igloo. He is the love of our lives. Truly a match made in heaven.\r\nHe has such a personality you would swear he is a boy in a puppy's body. He plays, smiles, listens, tricks you, and loves you completely. If he is upset because he was unable to take a ride with you, he will ignore you until you apologize. He warms our hearts. Thank you so much Second Chance!!!\r\n\r\nJim, Emma, and the whole family... :)

    Pros

People who care, love, enjoy finding loving families for wonderful pets.

    Cons

    I wish they were closer

  • 143. An excellent shelter

    by: sarahcsmile

This shelter has had to work very hard to get the facilities it has and continues to streamline in an effort to provide the best care and support for all animals brought in. They really do care about the animals and go above and beyond to care for and place all animals brought in or found. If you can support this shelter, in anyway with monitary or item donations, I highly recommend it.

    Pros

excellent staff, who do the very best with the facilities available

    Cons

    really need a larger facility

  • 144. A top notch place with fabulous staff

  • 145. As an Animal Control Officer in the area, I have to say SECOND CHANCE ANIMAL SHELTER is the best all the way around. Extremely knowledgeable people from the dog walkers all the way up to the Director, Sheryl Braxley

    by: Shameless1954

This Shelter has made my position as ACO so much easier because there was a loving shelter to bring the abandoned animals to. I have followed each animal that I have released to Second Chance Animal Shelter and have found each Adoptive home to be a responsible one. Also, the web site makes it easy to follow the adoption of a pet. The Director obviously makes every effort possible to insure the safety and well being of all animals plus the continued effort to make improvements whenever the opportunity arises.\r\nSecond Chance Animal Shelter is my pick as the BEST.

    Pros

Availability, Determination and Knowledge of staff

    Cons

    None

The staff at Second Chance are very professional. I have been associated with them for a little of two years and am amazed at the care and concern they show towards the animals. Not a dog/cat goes through there that has not been walked, petted and loved by all the volunteers. They take great pride in placing the animals with a fit family and in a safe environment.GOOD JOB SECOND CHANCE!!

    Pros

    Cons

They need more space to hold the animals.
