  • 1. small place, big hearts

    by: lizzylizard217

I adopted a cat from SC SPCA 4 years ago. I remember the place being very small so they really do need to win this upgrade contest. They were friendly people who really cared about the animals. Thanks for all you do!

    Pros

    many animals

    Cons

    small place

  • 2. spca rocks

    by: Brenna

We need a makeover or a better place to be housed in order to offer all the help and services that we want to. We also just need the community support regularly to keep our doors open. We like being able to allow our dogs open space rather than a kennel during the day. Maybe if we get a better space we can have a cattery for the kitties.

    Pros

assisting with SC counties lower euth rate

    Cons

shelter is not big enough and doesn't allow for us to be of even further assistance to the homeless animal population

  • 3. The best

    by: jkccharming

You can't beat the Santa Cruz SPCA and the people who work there. I don't know anyone who works harder than director Lisa Carter. She spends day and night, 365, working to save and care for animals. She has such a big heart! We are so lucky to have her in Santa Cruz.

    Pros

    Wonderful, loving, honest, hard-working people

    Cons

    They need a new home

This is a great place & the animals are in good hands, but need real homes. The staff obviously really cares about the animals. The dogs are always happy to get some attention & love being taken for walks by the volunteers.

    Cons

    Need a bigger location!

The SPCA is going to celebrate 70 years of service to our animals. That should say it all. Through earthquakes, fires, this recession and much more this organization just keeps going for the animals. Their never give up spirit has served many homeless animal from New Orleans, Houston, and locally Merced and Santa Cruz county. The best non-profit in the county per the Good Times for more than just once. They are the best!!!

    Pros

Little place but lots of adoptions, volunteers and educators.

    Cons

    Need a bigger place(hint,hint zootoo)

    by: Katiemissy

I met my kitty Missy at the off-site adoption farmers market. The foster mom/adoption councelor made it so easy for me to take her home that day. They do great work in all areas to rescue homeless pets and place them into loving homes

  • 8. Please help them help the animals!!

    by: Jeno

The current economy problems are a double-whammy for shelters such as this one that rely on donations to help them rehome pets affected by foreclosures, lack of funds for care, etc. \r\n\r\nThis small group has big hearts and needs help to continue caring for animals in need...

    Pros

great adoption stats on limited funds

    Cons

could really use a new building...

  • 9. what ever it takes!!

    by: naneki26

If I had a million dollars to give, I would give it all to these people at the SPCA because they work their tails off to save lives!!!!

    Great committed compassionate staff

    Cons

Needs more room to house more rescues

  • 10. Best shelter ever

    by: Ronnie62492

Everyone there is so friendly and you are allowed to hold or pet any of the animals without having to fill out a form. The dogs are in a play yard, not in kennals. They get new puppies and kittens in each day.

    Pros

This is the best shelter ever

    Cons

    no cons

  • 11. Love it

    by: meganannie

I love the SPCA, what a nicer enviroment than ASA. The dogs run free, the volunteers are many. The dogs get love and exercise. Everyone is busy but happy. No dogs are euthanized.

    Pros

Helpful, lots of new animals constantly.

    Cons

    not enough money

  • 12. The best shelter EVER

    by: LinusMom

My kids volunteer here and have adopted pets from this shelter. The work they do is remarkable for a shelter of their size and though they desperately need more space and updated facilities, they continue to work tirelessly to save as many animals as possible. What more could you ask for?

    Pros

Great staff, low key, pets can be held and played with

    Cons

    by: LollyT

Having worked with this shelter in various capacities, I can verify that it is truly heroic in its work to save animals and provide them with forever homes. The great people here are tireless in their effort to save as many lives as possible, and our whole community should give them their support. Thanks SPCA for all you do!

  • 16. Great people, great place to save a pet!

    by: Jagiwar

Santa Cruz SPCA has a heavy workload for such a small city. There are a LOT of pets in this county, and unfortunately also a lot of irreponsible pet owners who do not spay/neuter. They deal with a large population of unwanted animals with very limited resources and lots of dedication. I thank them for my cat and look forward to working with them again!

    Pros

Caring staff and volunteers, lots of sweet pets to befriend, help and support after adoptions.

    Cons

    Small facility

  • 17. the best in the west

loving and caring staff; tireless director

    Cons

  • 24. Best rescue dogs ever

    by: RaleighNReina

My family has rescued a total of six dogs from the SPCA and each one is a fantastic addition to the family. The staff at the SPCA are wise in their ability to determine whether a dog is suitable for the adoptee or not. Our first dog _almost_ went to a home with small children and it would have been a bad mix. We're so happy to have our dogs!

    Pros

    Wonderful staff

    by: maryjodellamaggiore

Our Santa Cruz SPCA is just the best! The director and her staff are wonderful and compassionate people. The dogs and cats there have been rescued from other shelters. There are several doggy yards and a big cat room.

    Pros

    Cons

There is nothing bad about this SPCA!

  • 28. Local Animal Rescue Shelter

    by: chocolateforone

The Santa Cruz SPCA takes pride in the fact that it is able to rescue dogs and cats that would otherwise be euthanized from the local county shelter, as well as other animal shelters. Because the director and her staff are so highly qualified and knowledgeable, the animals at the Santa Cruz SPCA quickly find forever homes.

    Pros

    Wonderful and Caring Staff

    Cons

  • 29. Santa Cruz SPCA is the best!

  • 32. Good Work

    by: lambrhondal

This shelter has an extensive outreach both to Katrina victims and local problems. I was particularly impressed with the outreach to senior pets matched with elderly forever homes. So frequently an elderly animal is just assigned a death date and the elderly population frequently want and need a pet but the eager beaver puppy is too much for us elders to handle. I think concentrating on this population for animals and people is great.

    Pros

    Cares for elderly/senior pets

    Cons

    NA

  • 33. Friendly Staff

    by: mebants

I did find my new puppy there last week. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The animals were allmost all out and running around, big, small, older, pups. My little one came down with kennel cough the day after she came home. Maybe the pups, kittens should be seperated from the rest. However, there is not enough room and they NEED to win the makeover!

    Pros

    great animals

    Cons

    all run together
