  • 2. Tremendous asset to Iowa County

    by: ICSO

Iowa County is a rural community that has fewer resources than other neighboring counties. Before Rinthea Satterlee founded Safe Haven there has been no other animal rescue option for the citizens of Iowa County. For years the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office has picked up stray dogs and transported them to confinement. Before Safe Haven, there were few options for a rescued dog. At that time the dogs’ future was dismal. Before Safe Haven Iowa County citizens called the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office and asked for other options other than what we offered. The only other option was for the citizen’s of Iowa County to take the animals to neighboring counties that already have animal rescue in place. What we learned was that the neighboring counties would not accept animals from other counties. That was not promising for the lost or stray dogs or cats. The Iowa County Sheriff’s Office does not have facilities for cats. Since Safe Haven has been founded the stray or lost cats in our county have a better chance for rescue. The Iowa County Sheriff’s Office has responded to animal neglect reports where it was imperative that the animals be rescued from their conditions. With our limited resources we turned to Rinthea and the volunteers at Safe Haven. Safe Haven had little room for rescue. Rinthea reached out to her network and was able to find foster homes for all of the animals that needed special attention. Safe Haven is a tremendous asset to the citizens of this area. This area is in desperate need of animal rescue, public education of animal control and responsible pet ownership. Safe Haven is on a mission to rescue animals and educate the public. Something this area desperately needs. I know that Safe Haven has very intelligent volunteers. I can only imagine how much they could do if they just had the resources. A program could be pioneered. Thank you to Rinthea Satterlee and all of the Safe Haven volunteers. Lt. Tim Walters Iowa County Sheriff’s Office Marengo, Iowa 52301

    by: NATEFORD

Sadly, as the economy declines more and more family pets are dumped on the wayside. Many do this I guess because they don't have funds to find a new home for their loved one......... That is where Safe Haven comes in, they have a fantastic staff, all volunteer and provide what these homeless pets need, and then some. They find fosters for them, they provide love and attention and vetrinary care. Help us Help Safe Haven. How. keep Zootooing, so we can get a new shelter they need to grow. And, give what you can! All I can say is, Keep up the goodwork. You guys are great. I can't wait to hear you are in the top 10!

    Pros

    Cons

We need a new shelter as we need more room

  • 4. Such a Great Shelter

    by: tbsomeday

I really hope Safe Haven can win this money--they really deserve the help! If not--I hope the media attention at least gets more pets adopted out--thank you zootoo for the opportunity!

    Pros

    Dedicated staff

    Cons

    bad building for animals

  • 5. Wonderful Place for Animals

    by: sandy102353

Many people have worked long and hard to make this a reality and they are serving a much needed service within the community. Not your "normal" animal shelter. Animals are like "children" and treated with dignity and love. They do everything to protect their residents and find good, loving homes. God bless 'em.

    Pros

    Friendly, clean, honest, compassionate

    Cons

    Needs more money to expand/progress

  • 6. Special Place in my Heart

    by: Mama2Maddie

Rinthea and Safe Haven hold a VERY special place in my heart! A few years ago I inherited an 8 month old pup. She was very skiddish around strangers and ultimately ran away from my father who was taking care of her for the afternoon while I was away. She ran from him and we spent the whole night and the next day looking for her. I was devastated. Anyhow, I contacted Rinthea to see if there was anyway she could help me find my dog, Kita. She helped me by posting Kita's picture on the website with information on how to contact me. Unfortunately, we never found Kita - but I am still truely grateful for Rinthea's help! She and the rest of the staff and volunteers at Safe Haven are angels! It is amazing how many animals' lives they have managed to save and how many families' lives have changed over the years! Amazing.....keep up the outstanding work you do!

    Pros

  • 7. Great Facility

    by: Barbsw

Although I do not own a pet at present, we have friends that have worked with Safe Haven and have obtained pets through them. The people that work at Safe Haven have a reputation for being compassionate, loving and desire to have the pets adopted to loving families. I cannot give them enough praise for all they do even with so little to work with. Being in the finals for the makeover is just incredible and I wish them the best. If they win, the money will be put to great use both for a new facility and for equipment and materials.

    Pros

    Pictures of pets available online

    Cons

Their needs are not always met financially

  • 8. Olivia (RIO), how wonderful!

    by: boxermomJL

I was very impressed with how thorough and caring the staff was in adopting out our pup. The pup is microchipped and current on all vaccinations. They called our vet to ensure that we were current on all of our other pet's shots. It just shows how sincerely they care about that the homes that the pets go to care for them as much as they do. A million thanks for letting us adopt a little ball of energy and love!

    Pros

Obviously very conscientous and caring of where their pets go.

    Cons

can't think of any, other than we got lost going to see the pups

  • 10. Iowa County's Only Animal Shelter

    by: janet817

Safe Haven exists thanks to the generosity of a wonderful couple who has donated their barn to us. We have transformed it with the help of many hard working volunteers into a very nice place for these animals that have been abandoned. We really love them and do all we can to make their lives as pleasant as possible. We would love to make it so much better and because of you we are making strides. Thank you.

  • 11. Daisey & Lily are doing well

    by: dabkil

I had a great experience adopting our two lovely twin cats. They were at the shelter for over a year, but in great shape and mostly good manners. They have adjusted to life in our household and even accepted our existing cat into their sisterhood. Rinthea and the rest of the staff were very responsive to my need to see the facility and visit the cats a few times before we decided on the one that liked my daughter. And granted, my daughter is still learning to live with pets, too. Rinthea and Safe Haven are doing an outstanding job caring for the displaced, unwanted and hurting pets of Iowa County. I wish you the best in your pursuit of a new expanded facility.

    Pros

I was amazed at how clean the facility was.

    Cons

    No signage, no public welcome.

  • 12. Saving abandoned pets

    by: cshaull

This shelter was started by a few people with the hope of saving pets that were being dumped on the side of the road. This small group of people have made a difference and have saved hundreds of pets from starvation or worse and have found good homes for them. People in the community donate their time to care for the pets and take some into their homes because they are too wary of humans so they too can find a good home. The volunteers have raise money for this good cause by selling cookbooks, having benifit dinners pet walks you name it just to keep this going. These people have made a huge difference for Iowa County.

    by: mamalong

I helped with a Safe Haven fund raiser last summer. And ya I had heard alot about Safe Haven from friend and community members but until that day did not relize how much of a "family" these wonderful people are. They all work tirelessly to find homes for and care for all of these animals. It is a wonderful deserving orginization. I hope they go all the way.

    Pros

    Many wonderful people that care

    Cons

needs a permanent place with plumbing and heat

  • 14. companions

    by: brite2sun

First of all I think it is amazing that this shelter is run completely by volunteers. What a dedicated group of people. I've not visited the shelter personally, but I know several of the volunteers as well as some of the adopting "parents." They are very committed and compassionate people. I also love that this shelter finds companions for the animals, but also companions for people in need of animals. My grandma is a widow who has adopted pets from this shelter. I know how much emotional support pets bring, especially to those who live alone. I am thankful to the pets as well as the people who make this possible.

    Pros

    completely run by volunteers!!

    Cons

I haven't visited in person but....

I work at the landfill. There are a few stray cats wandering around every now and then, but we usually don't see to many. Several months ago we had a mother cat accidently get killed, leaving 3 kittens. I called Safe Haven and they sent someone over to pick them up (very quickly). I haven't seen them since, but I'm sure they are doing fine at Safe Haven....possibly have been adopted by now...yahoo!!!

    Pros

    Great accomadations for lost pets.

    Cons

    Need more room.

Safe Haven is an amazing shelter given its resources. It opens it's doors to all the animals it can. The care for the animals there is impeccable! Each gets plenty of attention and care. The animals all look happy and well taken care of. They have a wide variety to chose from, and they have great staff that will help you pick one out. The staff is very knowledgeable about the animals, and is more than willing to help you out with any questions. Overall, Safe Haven is a great shelter!

  • 18. Loving shelter for mistreated cat

    by: maryrogg

As the wife of the former Iowa County sheriff (retired in December 2008), I know how much Safe Haven is needed in Iowa County. Safe Haven has been called upon many times to help with animals in need. As an example, on one occasion, I contacted Rinthea myself because we had a cat picked up by one of the sheriff's deputies after a "vicious animal" call. After some investigating, I found out that he had been mistreated in his former home. It was quickly clear to my husband and I that he was not vicious at all but was extremely scared and in need of a loving home. I called Rinthea to see if she could help find him a forever home and she agreed to take him without any hesitation. Safe Haven named him Jabba. For more on his story, please go to the "Rainbow Bridge" portion of Safe Haven's website, wesavepets.com. The staff at Safe Haven truly cared about Jabba and clearly care about all of the other animals there. We feel Safe Haven is very deserving of a shelter makeover. Mary Roggentien

    Pros

    They care!

    Cons

    None.

  • 19. Why I Believe in Safe Haven of Iowa County

    by: Bubb9023

I have been involved with Safe Haven for a couple of years now. Our 4-H group have also donated to Safe Haven at Christmas time and assisted with the Waffle Breakfast fundraiser. This is such a great facility for unwanted and lost animals. I feel though we need a bigger faciility to support all the animals around our area. It is so great to see all the support our community give to this.

    Pros

great community support, great people and great animals

    Cons

Not enough room for all the animals that need homes

  • 20. Hands down...Safe Haven in the BEST!!!

    by: kgblassie

Wow, I can't believe I have been zootooing for months and I have yet to write a review about Safe Haven!! I am pretty sure I reviewed EVERY pet product and pet store in Eastern Iowa, and here I missed an incredibly obvious review! I do feel sort of wierd reviewing Safe Haven, it is like I am filling out my job performance review for work or something. So I can personally attest to the 5 star cleanliness rating I gave Safe Haven. I PERSONALLY bleached and scrubbed EACH DOG KENNEL this morning at 6:00 AM!! So I know they were clean and the dogs were happy when we left this morning!! So I guess I was waiting until just the perfect time to write this review, and here we are!! What better time than now to let Richard and all the great people at Zootoo know what an amazing shelter Safe Haven is!! After Zootoo visited Safe Haven last week, it was like another surge of energy and support zipped through our volunteers AND community. We are all so excited about the future of Safe Haven and the possibility of advancing in this contest makes us all want to push even harder to further our work and mission at Safe Haven. I can't imagine there is any way to step back and figure out what this experience has actaully meant to Safe Haven. I know that through Zootoo we have made so many new friends and connections. These connections are what we will continue to build on and pave a way to our bright new future. Thanks to Rinthea for making all this possible and for giving so many of us volunteers a place to direct our time and energy towards something we all truly believe in. Safe Haven of Iowa County is an amazing shelter that has worked so hard for everything we have and all that is to come! I hope Zootoo can see that we have done unbelievable things and will want to see what we could actually accomplish with a little help from them!! Let's Go Safe Haven!!

    Pros

great volunteers - but I may be a bit biased :-)

    Cons

    limited resources ?!

  • 21. animal shelter in Iowa County

    by: loriaj

I had learned about Safe Haven from my sister. She has helped them with a lot of their fundraisers. Her and I had gone out once to help on a Saturday to clean the cat haven. I had such a good time visiting with all the animals and helping in anyway I could. They keep everything so clean for having so many animals in their shelter. I think it's great that they are very dedicated to the animals and finding a new forever home for all of them. What a great group of vollunteers that make this shelter run so smoothly. I have seen Safe Haven at community events and think it's wonderful that they spread the word about what they are doing for the county. Thank goodness they are here to help with the lost and abused aniamls.

    Pros

I think it's great that they are in the county

    by: dinker

My grand-daughter told me about Safe Haven. I remember her coming down to visit me and telling me about a cookbook that she was putting together for the animal shelter in her county. A few months later she came back with 15 cookbooks hoping that some of my friends would like to purchase one of them. After an afternoon of playing cards all of the cookbooks were sold! The cookbook was great and I was so proud of her and the time she spent putting it all together for the sake of the aniamls. I know that she helps them with some of their fundraisers. I think it's great that they have so much support in such a small community. I hear nothing but good things about the shelter and wish them all the best in the shelter makeover!

    Pros

Have heard nothing but wonderful things

    Cons

    none

Acturally perhaps my rating should have been four as I have never been there....But I want to make a special effort to do this....I would probably gobble up all the cats there if I could physically care for them...I have Pandora and Geoff..They came to me well with all the necessary medical actiions completed.....My daughter in law helps there and it's not uncommon to get a little note form the Director now and again....I never had an inside cat before and now I have three total...I am retired and not in the best of health...I can not possibly put into words the difference these little cats have made in my life and given beyond meansure to my peace of mind....

    Pros

staff helpful and friendly... Animals well cared for

    Cons

    I have none

  • 24. Very Benificial to our city

    by: tjspratt

My name is Julie Spratt and I am Deputy Clerk for the City of Williamsburg. Before Safe Haven was established our City would have to take stray and abandoned animals to the local vet clinic. When they were not claimed they were simply disposed of. Having such a wonderful organization such as Safe Haven prevents this from happening. It is very helpful to our Police Department. They are the ones who go out when we have a call regarding an animal that is at large. Safe Haven is more than accommidating when we call upon them, which is quite often. Another benifit is that Safe Haven has done so much for the community that people are very aware of their purpose. So when a pet is missing, the owners naturally check with Safe Haven to locate their pet. The service that Safe Haven provides is truly needed in our community. They are very hard working and devoted to their purpose. They have had many struggles and setbacks as they have grown but have persevered. During this time of financial hardship, our City is not able to donate to help support their efforts. Safe Haven is a very, very worthwhile organization and deserving of this honor. Julie Spratt

    Pros

    Very needed service

    Cons

in need of a permanent facility

  • 25. I love Safe Haven

    by: chilibug

So you just finished looking through the top ten animal shelters and you don't know who to support. well your search is over! Safe haven loves animals and do anything for them. They will pay thousands of dollars to give a cat a surgery but the pound will just kill the cat. :( Safe Haven takes in all the cats and dogs that the pound is about to kill and gives them a second chance. One day my girl scout troop went down to Safe Haven and we got to pet the cats and we saw a special cat that had some spine problems and they took such good care of that cat. They held him and he had his own big cage. In the end he was adopted and now is living happily. Please pick safe haven!!!!!!! I am only 12 years old! ( kids know what is good) This small shelter has so many animals and needs your help. Think of a little dog or kitten, do you see it's face looking up at you ? You need to act now!!!Please Please! with cherries on top!

    Pros

They love animals and will do anything for them

    Cons

They are a little to cool!!!!

  • 26. A Home For Molly

    by: ayoung2004

I recently had a neighbor in need of placing her cat into a new home quickly because she was moving into an apartment and her soon-to-be ex husband wouldn't keep their cat, Molly. I have a friend who's mother volunteers for Safe Haven and took us on a tour a year ago and thought she may be able to help Molly. She contacted the director, and unfortunately they didn't have any room to take Molly in but they were able to help by placing an ad online. There were a total of 8 people who contacted me, showing interest in Molly... all of whom I had to turn away because she found a home with the first caller and was delivered there one week ago today. Safe Haven's involvement found Molly a wonderful new home in a matter of days. Thank you so much for helping a kitty in need.

    Pros

    Clean Facility

    Cons

    Need more room

  • 27. All you could ask for in a shelter, and more

    by: chuckgent

Safe Haven may be a small shelter in size, but it is HUGE in heart. Having a volunteer staff, and no financial help from local governments or organizations. Safe Haven must rely on donations and fundraisers to continue their work of saving the animals in their care. The volunteers hearts, however, are huge. Since it was founded around 3 years ago, it has had to move into it's second "home" and has continued to grow in population and volunteers. No matter what the situation one of the volunteers has always come forth to do what was needed to ensure the welfare and safety of the animals of Iowa County. We have again outgrown our available floorspace, and are in need of a bigger shelter. We need a shelter with some of the "conveniences" other shelters take for granted. Namely running water (in the wintertime) and toilets. But no matter the obstacle, the volunteers are always looking for ways to improve quality of life of the residents there. That is why we recently put a down payment on some land. We are in desperate need for our own shelter. A shelter large enough to accommodate the increasing number of animals in need. We need to be able to have paid staff able to take the time to work with the dogs one on one to make them the best possible candidates for adoption. We need a facility we can truly call home, instead of a leased barn from one of our volunteers. We have come along way in a short time. Imagine a small shelter, in a small farming community in Iowa being able to finish #14 in the first round of the Zootoo.com Shelter Makeover contest. That's right #14. We have come so far, but still have so far to go in order to realize our dream. If able to win this contest, we will be able to build our dream shelter...but it doesn't stop there. We will be more able to educate our community on spay/neuter and why it's necessary. We can host microchip clinics to help reduce the number of lost pets. We will even be more prepared to step up in the event of a crises such as a group of dogs in danger at a puppy mill. With this shelter, we will be able to do many things we can't do now, and the things we are able to now do, we will be better equipped to do much better. To everyone who already volunteers or supports Safe Haven, THANK YOU!!!! To everyone else, please consider volunteering or supporting our cause.

    Pros

Dedicated staff of volunteers will do anything to save animals

    Cons

    Limited space to work with

  • 28. Superheroes to the rescue

    by: sjoseph

Safe Haven is amazing and are superheros to many animals in need! Not by what you here so much, but what you SEE! Their actions speak loudly that this shelter is truly dedicated to rescue all the cats, kittens, puppies, and dogs, for what ever reason their life has been put in jeopardy. They work as a team, with feeding, cleaning, loving, being there, playing and medical care everyday. Not one animal goes unnoticed. But their actions go way beyond that! They facilitate a learning environment for all staff & volunteers involved at the Haven. They also speak and educate the many communities they serve about pet owner responsibility, what it means to have a pet's life in your hands. This organization has what it takes, dedication, knowledge and determination to do more. Having that new facility will take all this to a new level, provide more positve outcomes for more animals, and last, but not least, changing the way communities and families look at pet ownership and responsibility. Sandra Joseph

    Pros

Dedicated staff, knowledge, super community support

    Cons

small facility, more need than space, limited income

  • 29. Love Safe Haven

    by: amyeliza3

We adopted our precious Fiona (Ciena at the time) from Safe Haven over 2 years ago. She was their 100th rescue hense the name Ciena for one hundred. She was found wondering the streets, fully declawed and scared of everything. I saw her online and decided we would make the two hour drive to see her. In the back of my mind I knew we were going to get her know matter what. Two years later and a lot of emotional TLC Fiona is a normal, loving cat. I can't imagine how scared she must have been defenseless and alone. Safe Haven took her in and allowed us to grow our pet family more than we could imagine. No matter how much work and care Fiona required we are so touched there are people like Safe Haven to take in all animals and give them a warm, safe place to live until their forever family comes to take them home. Thank you! Amy and Nick Varcoe Des Moines, IA

Recently a friend of mine was in need of help to find a cat a home. She had heard me talk about Safe Haven and asked if they could help. I contacted a volunteer and Rinthea immediately had someone post my friends F2 spinx on a number of websites for adoption. With in a week or so the friend had 4 calls and was able to find a very nice lady in Nebraska that wanted the cat. The volunteers at Safe Haven really went above and beyond as my friend doesn't even live in Iowa county. Thank You Safe Haven!!!!!

  • 33. Bo is Happy in VA after a Skillful Safe Haven Distance Adoption

    by: casnklo

I adopted Bo this summer for our family after meeting him at the Safe Haven booth at a stop on the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa in late July. He and his brother had been given up to the Sherriff -- they were quite sick with Lyme disease then, but had been successfully treated at SH. We had lost our Rotty mix to cancer early in the Spring and our family was ready for a new dog. SH checked my references carefully and strategized with me about the logistics of the long-distance adoption and flight back to VA with me -- they got him into their vet on Saturday so that he could be certified for inter-state travel the next day. Since I was biking and had no vehicle, when our flights were cleared for pet transport on Sunday they drove him to Cedar Rapids to meet me at the airport! He has really taken to life in Virginia here with my wife and our boys, 15 and 11, where he enjoys his jogs with me, walks with the other family members, and seeing his canine neighbors on a daily basis. Safe Haven is truly a shelter that will go the extra mile to find the right forever home for the lucky pets who find their way to this caring organization! -- Kevin Ogle Falls Church, VA

    Pros

Dedicated caring staff who do their homework and more...

    Cons

Long distance adoption is not their specialty, but it went well.

  • 34. Safe Haven is exactly that!

    by: joeysmom22

I found Safe Haven on Petfinder.com. I immediately fell in love with the picture of the little 'Joey' that was posted. His story was heartbreaking and joyous all at the same time. He was one of a litter of pups who were in a cardboard box on a farm being sold for $5.00 apiece. A woman stopped to inquire and purchased one of Joey's siblings. The farmer pressed her to purchase more. When she said she was only interested in one, he informed her the ones who didn't sell would be shot. How sad that someone would have so little care for the life of these precious puppies, but how miraculous that there was someone to save them! The woman called Safe Haven. Safe Haven immediately went and retreived the pups and asked to also take their mother who was not fixed. The farmer refused, but allowed the puppies to go. The next day he called back and asked them to also take the mother...which they did. Joey was taken to a foster home and his photo was put on Petfinder. His foster mom, Val told me later that she had several inquiries about Joey, but no one seemed like a fit for him. She was distressed about it, but late one night (I think it was close to 10:00) I submitted my application to adopt Joey. Val said she knew right away that she didn't adopt Joey out because she knew someone would come along who was perfect for Joey (like us!). We took the kids and drove over an hour to meet him. He was an affectionate, sweet puppy who immediately won ours hearts. We left already remorseful that we had to leave him behind while we went through the screening process. My husband went back and retrieved Joey as soon as possible. We spent days with the kids trying to figure out the "perfect name" for him. In the end we kept Joey...(Safe Haven had already chosen the perfect name) He has amazing height in his jump and he is an Austrailian Mix, so how fitting to be a 'Joey'! Safe Haven required us to have Joey neutered as terms of the adoption and even gave us a voucher for a discount. He was microchipped and we provided proof of his neutering from our veternarian (who honored his discount..thanks Family Pet Vet in West Branch!) Later that summer, they held a family reunion for the adopted dogs where Joey was reunited with his brother J.J. Safe Haven is a loving responsible group of people, who truly love the animals they have the grace of helping. It is my honor to review them!

    Pros

Very forever home oriented. Thorough screening of applicants, they really care where these animals go!

    Cons

They don't have enough room! Their hearts are bigger than the barn allows! But the ones who get there well taken care of while they find a foster.

  • 36. Makeover is NOW!

    by: jwarth

Opportunities for small rural animal rescues and shelters are few and far between. The Zootoo Million Dollar Make-Over is a one in a million opportunity. Unlike urban areas where adoption and pet ownership are vogue. Rural Iowa often wrestles with age-old notions that these are "farm" animals. Although many individuals are catching up and now know that animals are part of our family and not livestock. Our infrastructure is not there. This is where the makeover and creating a model for rural areas around the country is a one in a million opportunity. Safe Haven is proof of what a few people with a good idea can do. This young shelter is committed to humane, positive animal care as well as volunteer and community training. Safe Haven excels in community building, training and creating stimulating environments to care for these animals! I believe that in addition to doing great work in Iowa County, Safe Haven can create a model that we can share with small, growing and start-up shelters around the country using grassroots efforts. With the support of Zootoo, thousands of animals will be saved and joined to loving homes in Iowa County. If we can develop a good model that is shared with others, these numbers will be exponential. I'd love to see with Zootoo's financial and technical assistance and Safe Haven's passion the creation of a program that includes facilities for the animals, a strong foster program, training for animals in the community and shelter and educational opportunties for the area. I am proud to be able to be a part of it!! GO SAFE HAVEN! and thank you Zootoo!

    by: pearlsmom2

We adopted our dog, Pearl, approximately three years ago from Safe Haven. She has been a great fit for our family. Pearl was in "doggy foster care" when we met her so I never actually saw the shelter but I know she recieved excellent care until she was able to join our family. Pearl also had a small tumor on her stomach that Safe Haven took care of before we adopted her. We would definetely adopt from this shelter again and are so happy to have something like this in our area.

    by: stmikk

Save Haven is a place where animals are able to get the care they need while great people try to find them all wonderful homes!!! We were lucky to find Abby with them in Dec of 2007. I was told they rescued her, along with her siblings, from freezing out in the cold snow when the owner of the puppies wouldn't get her dog spade. Upon seeing how the puppies were treated, they took them in and that is how I happened to find Abby. Through friends, they directed me to Safe Haven and I was able to find the best dog anyone could ever have. I would go there again in a heartbeat.

    Pros

This is a shelter that has to put down their animals because of lack of money and really wants to win this money to become a no kill shelter. They have to put down cats pretty much every day and doesn't want to but without money they have to. They are an overall really great shelter but needs money to improve.

    Pros

    Cons

I don't know what cons means either.

Safe Haven has great fundraisers and the sell homemade items to raise money. They are great at publicity. They are the only shelter in the area-more needed out in the sticks-and they are doing a great jobfinding homes for the pets they care for. The community has really joined in the efforts to find great homes for the animals, and to help the shelter succeed!

    Pros

They are great at getting the word out, and having fundraisers.

    by: JTBuresh

The volunteers at Safe Haven take GREAT pride in their work there and the facility, as well as the care that their animals receive while staying there. My son and I go and help my wife with the dogs sometimes and it is remarkable what this shelter accomplishes day in and day out. The animals are extremely well cared for and the facility is kept quite clean. My wife goes out two to three times a week and does the dogs, the volunteers make sure the dogs all get walked twice daily. This shelter is doing amazing things for the stray and abandoned dogs & cats in Iowa county.

    by: kattysue

Safe Haven is an awsome animal rescue organization. The "staff " if you call volunteers staff come from all over the area to care for the animals. What they have done to make a barn a rescue facility is amazing. The cats and dogs are cared for very well. When I stop to visit the cats I am amazed that they are such happy animals. All the animals are given such a hope they can find a forever home.

    Pros

  • 52. Such needed love

    by: NetteB

This shelter is so amazing. The people who volunteer to help, have such love and compassion towards these animals and everyone always wants to help. The sad part is, there is no room for these animals in this small barn, our town has fundraisers for Safe Haven and they only ask for donations. I believe that an animal has just as much love and emotion that us as humans have they just cant express it verbaly, but by a small lick on your hand or by a playfull slobber on the cheek you know that all they are looking for is love just like us. Safe Haven believes in no kill and I think that is amazing because the only thing these animals are looking for is a place to sleep, someone to love them, and food. I believe in our animal shelter and everyone in our town does too but some people don't even know where it is because it is so far out in the country and the gravel roads to get to it get bad in the winter. The barn is falling apart and the animals are running out of room. Even if we don't win I believe that this shelter will stay strong because of how much love goes into it every day! Thank you for loving animals:)

    Pros

Everyone is a Volunteer, it's a no kill shelter, and there is so much love

    Cons

It isn't government funded, it's in a barn far out in the country, there just isnt enough room

  • 53. The perfect addition to our family!

    by: eriffel

I really enjoyed adopting our cat from Safe Haven. The entire process went smoothly from beginning to end. The online listing makes it easy to browse from home, to compare pets to see who would do best depending on your environment (kids, other pets, etc). They then let you meet and interact with your pet at Safe Haven or to arrange a home stay. Volunteers worked with my schedule to set up a time to pick her up. They offer great tips and tools on making the transition go smoothly and also offer to help if things don't quite as planned. Overall a great experience and we love our new addition to the family :)

  • 55. Family Love

    by: Kendrie

I adopted my dog from SHIC in December and cannot believe how she has so quickly become a member of our family. Shiloh was being fostered by a SHIC volunteer and our experience was AWESOME. Brandy was so kind to us and cooperative in making plans to pick up Shiloh. She was extremely knowledgeable about dogs and even taught me a lot. The best part of our relationship with SHIC is that Brandy recently kept Shiloh for 10 days while our family went on vacation! Talk about going above and beyond! It made our vacation much more relaxing knowing she was back with the foster mom she loves so much rather than being kenneled in a cage!

    Pros

love the workers have for the animals

    Cons

They DESPERATELY need a new facility

  • 56. So Much Love for the Paws

    by: hrosenberry

Just think of this -- someone going through a McDonald's drive thru and throwing out a box with a mother and her kittens!! Just think of this -- someone moves out and just leaves their "pet" behind!! Just think of this -- a call from law enforcement that a lost dog/cat has been found and if no one claims him/her in three days -- death will be the animal's destiny!! These things do happen but our volunteers at Safe Haven give so much to these animals to meet their need but most of all the love and care a pet should have. Safe Have is trying to raise enough money to build a bigger shelter for these animals. Our county is small but the hearts of the volunteers are big. Thank you to each one of you. Phyllis R

    by: sherylneal

I began volunteering at Safe Haven about 3 years ago. It has been a very rewarding experience. The animals are very well taken care of and they are always so glad to see you. The volunteers are very dedicated to the animals. They do everything possible to make sure they have clean havens, food and water, are loved, groomed, medicated when needed and played with. We have no government funding of any kind. We survive solely on donations. The animals are always our first priority. Adoption petitions are thoroughly gone over and references contacted to make sure our animals are going to a good forever home. We love each and everyone of these animals and they love us in return.

  • 63. Well designed but needs more funding

    by: Aaron1108

This shelter is based almost completely on volunteers. The facility is set up nicely for cats and dogs but they need more room and a new building. They are currently in a barn with no drain system nor any bathrooms. The volunteers have to drive to the nearest gas station if needed. Also there is really no room for the potential adopter to have one on one time with the potential new member. HOWEVER, the volunteers are very knowledgeable with each and every animal at the Haven. You can tell each animal is loved while they are visiting Safe Haven.

    Pros

    Set up nicely

    Cons

Needs more funding for a new facility

The Safe Haven staff are some of the finest people I have ever met. They have come in off duty to help with puppies who lost their mother, they have posted fliers around the county for people whose pets ran off to help the owners find them. They go to the local pound and rescue these wonderful critters to give them a chance to live and find the loving home that they deserve. I commend them for all their hard work. God Bless each and every one of you. Keep up the good work!!!!!

  • 70. DEDICATED Animal Shelter with loving, caring Staff

    by: KGrover

Safe Haven of Iowa County animal shelter is run by a small staff with hundreds of volunteers who are completely and totally devoted to the well-being of the animals they rescue and adopt out. I recently adopted a dog from Safe Haven, and was extremely impressed by the absolute devotion to each animal in terms of medical care, psychological rehabilittion, and dedication to matching the right family to each and every special recovered pet. My new dog in particular was found during the terrible midwest flood season wandering the streets of a small town with a litter of pups. This dog was completely terrified of people, noises, and proved very hard to capture. Safe Haven did so with loving care by providing a temporary shelter and heated water dish to the area where the dog was known to hide. The litter of pups were recovered, given excellent medical treatment and adopted out to loving homes. The dog, "Puppers" continued to prove difficult to capture but was eventually recovered. She was found to have medical issues such as an abcessed tooth. Safe Haven arranged for her complete medical needs for the dental care as well as full physical exam and spaying. This shy dog was then placed in a special and wonderful dog foster family for several months to rehabilitate her in order to reduce her anxiety and help her know she was a loved dog. I am now the proud new mom of this beautiful sweet dog and am in debt to the diligent efforts of Safe Haven's staff and foster family group for helping me bring this sweet dog home. The Safe Haven of Iowa County group are angels on Earth in my book!

    Pros

A shelter totally dedicated to the protection and well being of small animals.

    Cons

    NONE!

Safe Haven has foster parents who take care of many animals who deserve a place to call "home". We picked up our Ella from foster parents who took really good care of her; like she was one of their own! I'd like to thank all the foster parents out there that care enough to make this provision.

    Pros

Awesome to have alternative housing for pets

    Cons

Sometimes they are farther away than a person might want to travel

  • 75. Next best thing to home for dogs & cats

    by: robinrae

Safe Haven volunteers work so hard because they want nothing but the best for the animals in their care. They pay a lot of attention to details like health care and cleanliness, which is not always an easy task when you are working in an old converted barn. But they are very determined, which is why some day soon they will have a facility with adequate insulation, running water, more outdoor runs, a washer & drier and a bathroom. The animals in their care know that they are loved, regardless of their breed, or if they have special health needs, are missing a limb or have behavior issues to be worked on. The animals who find their way to Safe Haven are in safe hands!

    Pros

All animals are in a loving environment

    Cons

need a make-over to have more room for expension

    by: NiknDick

The Cedar Rapids Gazette ran a story about a dog, Trooper, who was in need of surgery to amputate one of his legs. Safe Haven was seeking contributions to help with the pricey surgery. I immediately sent a check to help Trooper and added a note to the envelope, saying I might know someone interested in adopting him if he was still in need of a loving home. Well - that family that was going to adopt turned out to be mine. Trooper (or Hopper as we sometimes call him) is amazing and is doing fabulous on three legs. We've had him almost 2 weeks now and he is defintiely a keeper. Thankfully, places like Safe Haven exist to help these beautiful creatures who need - and deserve - a loving family and wonderful home. We feel very blessed...and very thankful for the folks at Safe Haven.

I volunteer with my mom at Safe Haven to walk dogs. I only go about every 2 weeks cause sometimes I have to work on the nights she goes out. My favorite part is playing with the dogs. (We let mom do the 'clean up' stuff) Everyone that helps there is nice and if very friendly to work with. It would be nice if we had more room so we could help more dogs. Plus we need a place that has a bathroom! They have helped so many animals already.

Safe Haven is an amazing organization. Rinthea and the volunteers are truly didicated to caring for animals in need of shelter and finding homes for them. We adopted a dog who was in foster care with Safe Haven. She was clearly well cared for and loved during her time at the shelter and with her foster family. We were impressed by the dedication, responsiveness and compassion of everyone we dealt with. Customer service is a real strong point with the Safe Haven team. Lady's foster mom brought Lady to our home so we could meet her, delivered her to us when our application had been approved and all paperwork and vet records were promptly mailed to us. These people and hardworking and dedicated. We've been motivated to do all we can to help in their efforts to build a new shelter. They are working miracles.

  • 83. My experience

    by: dhicok

There are not good things that I can say about the people that give their time and their love to all the animals that they help. What was really neat, was that there were all ages, and experiences! They make sure that you fit your pet. I love that they check on people, ask for ref's, they get you out there to meet the animal that you are going to adopt. They have people to answer questions about training, food, a little of everything. They are always there! We have had Tucker for about a year now, and I still see all the emails from the group going back and fourth. All of them sharing pictures and love. It is the best thing I have been able to share with my daughter. Some thing that she can learn from and take away with her. Like I said, what a wonderful group. I cannot say enough good things.

    Pros

    All the people involved

    Cons

    to far away from me

  • 84. Great Shelter

    by: tstandley12

Great Shelter and staff!! I'm located in Des Moines, IA, about an hour and a half away from the shelter. They made picking up and transporting my two kittens very simple. They had great communication and a lot of helpful information for a first time cat owner. A year after I adopted and they still occasionally check up on how my cats are doing. That shows how much they truly love and care for the animals they help. As soon as I get a bigger house the first place I’m going for a dog is the Safe Haven of Iowa County. Thank you to all the great staff at the Safe Haven for all your great work!

    Cons

NOTHING!! Minus it being located about an hour and a half away from me

  • 85. A blessing!!!

    by: kpederso

Safe Haven is a blessing! They have AMAZING volunteers who are dedicated and work hard to bring deserving animals to families that love them! I know several people who have adopted pets in the past from other locations, and my experience was a complete breath of fresh air compared to theirs. Pre and post adoption, the staff contacted me several times to make sure my new buddy, Brody, was a good match and to see how he was doing! This shows the genuine love and attachment that these angels have for their animals! The work that they do and attention they give not only the animals, but adoptive parents as well, is phenominal and if I won the lottery tomorrow, I would give a huge donation to this place. It breaks my heart that finances are such a huge burden to this shelter, and I would LOVE to change this! Thank you, Safe Haven, for helping complete my family with such an amazing animal! I bet his loving personality and trust came from you guys-- you did have him for over a year, so you will always be extended family!!!

    Pros

    Awesome and dedicated staff!

    Cons

I work too much to volunteer!!! :0)

    by: lruder

Safe Haven and its staff are angels for what they do for the animals who may be lost or unwanted. They have provided a necessary service for this county and a voice for the animals. The dedication is phenomenal. I try to help with donations for supplies whenever I can and they are always so appreciative of the help given, in any form. I have pets and feel better knowing that if they ever got lost, there is a place like Safe Haven that will give them refuge until I can find them again.

    Pros

    Great dedication of Staff

    Cons

Needs a home to call their own--desperately

  • 89. pursuing my passion

    by: ShannaBanana

Although I dream for forever homes for all the cats residing at Safe Haven, I do believe the volunteers do a WONDERFUL job making sure the cats lives are as full as possible. They have very clean environments with fresh food and water provided twice daily by the volunteers, as well as space to run, jump and climb. There are excellent hiding places also, for when they're in the mood for a quiet nap. Safe Haven is just up the road from my house, which makes it very easy for me to lend a hand when my home/work schedule allows it. What a GREAT GROUP of volunteers I have to work with there!!

    Pros

spend as much time as I can with nearly 100 cats

    Cons

feel sad for them daily that they aren't in forever homes

  • 90. They said it would never last.

    by: pflueger

Many people thought Safe Haven was a "flash in the pan". The volunteers would tire of their little project and it would soon close. They continue to work tirelessly to provide the homeless dogs and cats of Iowa County, IA a comfortable home. There are almost no paid staff, yet Safe Haven has care for their animals 2 times a day. The place is clean, and you can tell that the animals are used to being cuddled. They don't even have a bathroom, but volunteers continue to attend to all the needs of their furry friends. Land has been purchased and in a few years, they will have a wonderful place. Safe Haven has accomplished more in three years than many shelters have in ten. Go Safe Haven!

    Pros

Caring volunteers who go make it happen

    Cons

    Needs a bathroom

  • 91. I love Safe Haven

    by: discochique13

Rinthea was so helpful when we were looking to adopt our dog last year. We lived 90 miles away from the shelter, which I know is not ideal for adoptions, but we fell in love with Punkers from the beginning. Safe Haven has so many great volunteers and foster families as well. Thanks to the Martin's who took great care of "Punkin" while she was with them.

    Pros

Great shelter with many loving volunteers.

    Cons

    Help--they need money!

  • 92. Our adoption of Fred

    by: sanborna

Our family adopted our newest member Fred in August of 2008. Our adoption process was very thorough and the people we met were very nice and friendly. Fred was being fostered at a great home and Jeanie was so pleasant and accommodating with our family. It was a great adoption process and Fred-minus the shoes he has chewed :) has been so much fun. Our family just adores him. Thanks Safe Haven of Iowa County.

    Pros

    Very Thorough and Friendly

    Cons

    Can't think of any

  • 93. They've opened my eyes!

    by: sjcmom

I started volunteering at Safe Haven about 18 months ago. I would occasionally send them a donation, then got in the habit of sending a monthly donation. They started sending me thank you's. I told them to save their money, I knew they appreciated the donations. They asked if they could send thank you's via e-mail and I said sure. So- I started getting all the e-mails, which was great cause it kept me informed on what was going on. Then came THE e-mail. The one that said they needed more volunteers for animal care. At that point in time I was going through a very selfish period. My Dad had recently passed away (my Mom passed 5 years earlier) and I was really just feeling sorry for myself. I didn't want to give up any time. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that 1-2 hours a week wasn't going to kill me. Needless to say, I got hooked! The animals are so appreciative of the time we spend. Just like my own pets, it's unconditional love. Plus, this is a cause I really believe in. Safe Haven really opened my eyes to what was going on around me in regards to homeless animals. Yes, I still have my moments when I think it would be nice to stay home on my night at the shelter, but after I'm there and see all those sweet faces I remember why I do this.

    Pros

    Caring staff/volunteers

    Cons

    Not enough room!

  • 94. Ming & Mia adoption

    by: hlthomp

I recently was watching for a small, non-shedding dog on petfinder. Little did I know I would end up with two of the most loveable "girls" imaginable. My first interest was little Ming who we have nicknamed "Precious" at our house. When I inquired about her, she came with Mia, a dog we assume is her mother. Mia is genuinely sweet and I can't imagine having one without the other. They are little bundles of energy at times as well as the best snugglers and they were truly well served by their time with Safe Haven (and especially foster mom Sarah). I am certain they were meant to be part of my family. I can't imagine life without them!!!!! I had never adopted before and I would recommend anyone look into adoption before purchasing a pet and if you live in or near Iowa County you should check Safe Haven out!!!!

    Pros

They truly care about the pets they place.

    Cons

It seems like a lot of paperwork...but it makes you truly think about the commitment which ends up being a major plus!!!

  • 95. Thank heaven for Safe Haven

    by: Oreos1mom

Safe Haven rescued our puppy who was running loose with her litter-mates. Their mother was a feral dog living on her own for months, fearful of people.\r\n\r\nNow the puppies have been placed in loving homes. The mom was caught and is being socialized for adoption.\r\n\r\nWhere would they be without Safe Haven??? starving...freezing...run over on the highway...multiplying and multiplying the problem as they grew and had puppies of their own??\r\n\r\nThe people at Safe Haven are dedicated, loving, knowledgeable, thorough. I would encourage anyone in the area to HELP SAFE HAVEN with volunteer time or donations. \r\n\r\nSAFE HAVEN IS THE VOICE OF COUNTLESS ANIMALS IN NEED!\r\n\r\n

  • 104. God Send

    by: jennyplee

Living off of a major interstate has it's advantages and disadvantages. I have on two different occasions stopped for dogs on an off ramp. The first, a very old, freezing cold Golden Retriever. Once I lifted her into my car I wasn't sure what to do as I don't have the facilities for a dog. I called a neighbor who is a volunteer at Safe Haven, and she met me at the Haven after I had taken sweet Goldie to a local vet clinic for a well-being check. Goldie was quickly adopted. Kimme, a young black lab with endless energy, has been slower to adopt. She came bounding up to my car as I slowed down on the off ramp- just wanting to play. Both of these times, Safe Haven has helped. As much as I would want to, I am unable to currently house any dogs. Safe Haven has been a God-send! Keep up the amazing work :-)

    Pros

    Caring, kind, knowledgable staff!

    Cons

In an ideal world...larger facilities are needed

  • 105. Volunteering at Safe Haven

    by: klkolb57

I am a volunteer at Safe Haven and I love it. I help with the dogs and I also volunteer at the local pound in which some of our dogs at Safe Haven come from. I love working with the many of the people there and I love working with the dogs. Everyone is great and the dogs are just fabulous. My boys also help out at Safe Haven and also work with the dogs and help out wherever they can.\r\nAll of our dogs get a lot of love from everyone. They are all very well taken good care of. We make sure they all have clean pens, get to go on walks, have social times with other dogs, and get lots of attention.\r\nSafe Haven is a great place to volunteer at!

  • 106. Life without Safe Haven

    by: CallieJim

Euthanasia. Starvation. Abuse. Fear. Sadness. If you take the annual number of dogs and cats saved/rescued by Safe Haven (average 170) and then put that number in perspective for even the past 10 years before SH was established, the numbers are quite staggering. \r\n\r\nDo the math. Dump out a couple of boxes of cheerios and count out 1,700 pieces on your kitchen table. Wow. Now think, each one of those pieces was once a dog or cat that never stood a chance at a good life, was probably verbally or physically abused, starved, lived in fear and sadness, dumped somewhere, and some eventually put to death. It kinda makes you want to quit eating cheerios ever again. \r\n\r\nEvery community should have a Safe Haven. Thank God mine does.

    Pros

    brings awareness to the community

    Cons

none of the towns or the county will support it like they need to

  • 107. Chelsea's Adoption Experience

    by: kathyiniowa

I adopted Chelsea from Safe Haven of Iowa in August 2008. Rinthea from Safe Haven had pursued in catching Chelsea who was running through the fields, afraid to come to anyone. Rinthea not only took care of Chelsea's physical needs - hygiene, safe shelter and food - she went far beyond and provided Chelsea much love and encouragement to overcome her fear of people. She taught her to recognize her name, become housebroken, and socialized her with other animals. Rinthea had me fill out a long application about my desire and ability to take care of a dog. We visited the shelter several times to "get to know each other" so that Chelsea didn't see me as a stranger when the big adoption day arrived. Rinthea made sure that Chelsea's neutering went well and that she was healed sufficiently to be adopted. We also took our dog, Jack, with us to introduce him to Chelsea. This has turned out to be a wonderful relationship. I'd rate this rescue facility a 10+ for loving care, ability to take care of animals, cleanliness and commitment.

    Pros

Very caring rescuers, clean & well-maintained facility

    Cons

    none!

    by: Irisblossom81

We adopted our dog, Sid, from Safe Haven. We were very impressed with the shelter. The volunteers spend long hours making sure all the animals are well cared for. Without them, Sid would have been euthanized because he was a stray. We are so thankful that they were there to save his life and give him a temporary home. We were so impressed with Safe Haven that my husband starting volunteering to help care for the dogs. I hope that Safe Haven continues its strong legacy of providing care for animals that otherwise would be left out in the cold.

Every animal at Safe Haven has their own special personality and they get the attention / care needed to satisfy their needs. There is never a negative attitude about anything. • 120. Safe Haven Really is Safe Haven

    by: leahwolfe

Although quite a bit off the beaten path, Safe Haven of Iowa county is in a great spot for giving the animals room to run and exercise in a clean and safe environment. All the pets I saw were extremely clean and well groomed, and unbelievably good-tempered. They certainly were excited to see new visitors, but are very receptive to people being close to the cages, which are also very clean and each is supplied with a very comfy bed. Each bed is up off the floor and the bedding looked and smelled quite clean. \r\nThe Cages are shade and seemingly had good air ciculation. \r\nA small permanent staff, alongside a small group of volunteers does an amazing job keeping the animals in good health and even includes training as a part of their stay. I have never seen a shelter provide this kind of attention to their wards before. \r\nI am very impressed with the work they do.

    by: mamabear603

My sister wanted a shelter dog, so I told her to go and see what Safe Haven had to offer. I decided to tag along. Safe Haven is located out in the country on some farm land. A kind farmer donated a barn for the facility to run on. It is set up nicely. The cats are able to roam in and out side with comfortable space and bedding, and the dogs each have their own kennel with bed and are also allowed to go in or out. The staff (or volunteers) were very helpful with the selection of my sister's new pet. We were able to take the dogs out and to a separate larger kennel to see the personality and bonding of each dog. The only downfall to this shelter is that they are quickly running out of room because they accommodate the needs of several small towns. Thank god for foster families because there is really no more room for anymore dogs.... Let's just say my sister ended up with a new companion and I have ended up volunteering my time to help in any way I can. I hope others near this shelter will either help by donations, supplies, fostering or just some time.... it is always needed.

    Pros

Set up nice for both cats and dogs.

    Cons

    Running out of room
