    by: dg1000

I recently visited the Roanoke SPCA on a trip to visit family. I was greatly dismayed that with such a nice, new facility (so much better than the old one) that there were almost no animals in the shelter. I know that surrounding areas are still euthanizing animals at an alarming rate yet just an hour away a shelter sits almost empty. Helping homeless animals is a national problem. We should all be helping our neighbors. I just wish, if there really are no homeless animals in Roanoke, they would fill their empty spaces with animals from nearby.

    Very clean neat new building

    The cages are practically empty

I have volunteered here and it is a wonderful place. The people that work here really care for the animals and the animals are well taken care of. It would be nice if more people volunteered and donated money!

Great staff, animals are very well taken care of, no-kill shelter!

Needs more funding to help pay for food and other utilities for animals

I adopted my "Harley" in June 2007. The RVSPCA is a god send for homeless pets looking for a forever home, because they are a NO KILL shelter this makes them a great place for homeless animals

very knowledge staff & well run

  • 5. they must have a great fundraising committee

    by: srj

I have not been there myself yet, but my friend has been & volunteered with them. She says its a pretty good facility. What has impressed me so far is that they always seem to have an event going on. We were in Roanoke this weekend & saw an ad for an upcoming fundraiser, an article in their City magazine about them, & when we went to an art gallery in town, they were taking down another fundraising exhibit for RSPCA. They certainly have people willing to work for them.

they keep their name in the public

This new shelter sits on top of a hill far away from the river the old building used to be beside of. The river flooded the old shelter in 1985 and took the lives of numerous animals. A decision was made then to raise funds to build a new shelter and it was finally made possible and completed in February 2003. The building was completely paid for thru a capital campaign but the shelter has a $700,000.00 annual budget. Dedicated employees keep the facility running very smooth. Numerous volunteers foster animals so they will be more adoptable. Volunteers work daily to care for the animals and keep the building in top shape.

Beautiful facility built about 3 1\\2 years ago and is a NO-Kill shelter.

Solely self supporting thru fund-raisers, donations and memberships. No financial assistance from the city.
