  • 1. New Beginnings

    by: PuppylandVolunteer

I have been volunteering at Puppyland since February 2012 and have met the most wonderful and caring folks who run this facility. The animals are well taken care of and the buildings are clean thanks to the numerous volunteers I work alongside. Right now there are alot of changes as far as updating the buildings. My husband just placed a ventilation fan in the dog building and what a difference that did make. There is no odor in either building..there was but with some good daily cleaning there is no smell. Just a little attention to this shelter and the amazing things we are capable of. Stop by during the day 8 am until noon or we are there all day Saturday and Sunday. The animals would love to meet you and so would I.

    Pros

Clean well taken care of facility

    Cons

    not enough donations

  • 2. PLEASE RECONSIDER SUPPORTING PUPPYLAND!!!

    by: Babywhisper

Over the years, I have adopted 2 cats and 1 dog from Puppyland. I also supported them with several forms of donations (ex: aluminum cans, money). I hated going there because of the horrible conditions, the smell, the health of the animals, etc. but I did it for the animals hoping it would make a difference. Memorial Day weekend I noticed a large ad in the Post for Puppyland Humane Society, Inc. requesting donations to help stock the humane society. Something was different ... I had never before seen an ad that nice or that big for Puppyland and the name was now "Puppyland Humane Society, Inc". So, my Mother & I decided to take their request list to the store and buy some of the needed items listed ... we ended up buying almost everything on the list! When we got to Puppyland, we took a deep breath before unloading the car- expecting the same deplorable conditions as were over the past several years. As we got out of the care, we were greated by several exceptional and amazing animal caretakers ... Marilyn & Dick (the previous owners) are no longer there or involved with Puppyland in any way!! To our surprise and awe, the place was clean and bright with no "cat/dog" smell ... buildings have been restored and repainted, the cat house is bright with big cages, lots of room to roam and plenty of comfy places to relax. The same with the house for the dogs ... Puppyland is unbelievably fresh, sanitary and renewed!!! While we were there, volunteers were playing with severl dogs in a kiddie pool! We were told that the change of ownership took place late last Fall and these remarkable, anima-loving caretakers have been working unceasingly to clean and restore Puppland since then ... and THEY HAVE DONE A REMARKABLE AND OUTSTANDING JOB!! And, they're not finished yet ... they have many plans& ideas on how to continue making Puppyland well again. Unfortunately, they have a very large hurdle to overcome ... the bad reputation the previous caretakers made for Puppyland (as you can see by some of the previous comments). Please take the time to visit Puppyland to see what a difference these "angels" have made and their true passion and commitment to animals ... We felt so good after dropping off our donations and seeing the night/day change, we'll be doing this quite frequently. I truely believe that after visiting the "new & improved" Puppyland, you'll feel the same way!! THANK YOU to the new caretakers ... you have done an absolutely amazing job on transforming Puppyland!!

    Pros

    New caretakers - New Puppyland!

    Cons

Bad reputation established by previous caretakers.

  • 3. Volunteer or Donate

    by: chryysti

I adopted Shilo from Puppyland when I volunteered there with my girls. She did not have any health issues, not even worms, but had severe separation anxiety, I am sure if she was surrendered to a shelter that was not a no kill she would have been euthanized, no one would have wanted to take on this challenge. Animal owners know that if they drop off a pet with issues at a shelter that does euthanisia their animal may not be readopted, and Puppyland is a place for these animals. I see complaints but has anyone helped? Volunteer or Donate $, or a bag of food, switch your Pick n Save card to donate to Puppyland, and yes it is not the cleanest, what do you expect when one or two people are trying to do it all. This would be a great community service for a school or scouts. I remember one day I cleaned over 20 cages, I didn't see many people helping out at least when I was volunteering. Instead of all the complaints lets get up and help out anyway we can, after all we need to make the world a better place for all living things and complaining is what it is which is not helping the animals that are desperatly needing it.

    Pros

Last chance for animals with issues

    Cons

    Need more help and money

  • 4. help not condem

    by: orvil11

I adopted a dog from here. and been back several times. I did not see filth ,dirty pens, or sick pets. they all had food and clean water. litter boxes were clean. Yes the place can use up dateing. but what people have to remember, that is costly. and with out donations. It just cant be done. help instead of condeming the place. She has given her whole life to this. and no matter what the problem is finds a way to work it out. So please instead of saying close her down. take time to help her and these pets.

    Pros

A dry safe area for unwanted pets

    Cons

needs help and funding to up date

  • 5. VOLUNTEER THERE!

    by: theblackrose88

I understand that all the people here have problems with how it is run. I thought the same thing when I started going there, and I would cry everytime I went to leave the animals. I took 2 kittens from them, one a runt, and one tiger striped kitten. We had to medicate the runt due to an eye issue she had, which might have been passed to Tiger while still there. We have been able to get them both healthy, and are finding homes for them now. We consider ourselves FOSTER CARE for Puppyland. If you want to see your donations go to a good place, stop by on monday or thursday between 330 and 5 pm. I am always there both days, and i will ensure that the ANIMALS get this money!

    Pros

They are doing what they can

    Cons

    They are not doing enough!

  • 6. WHY is it still open?!

    by: Melmouse

for YEARS, this has been likened to a hoarder with a storefront. The animals die the majority of the time before they are adopted. Years ago, I adopted a pup from there - only because I knew he would be dead in short order if someone didn't rescue him from his "rescuer". I spent over $1500 in 10 days on this little guy, and nearly lost him. Not only was he infested with worms, but also suffering from Parvo. He was housed with 4 littermates who were also as sickly as he was, but I knew that I could not save them all. When I called to let them know that they had parvo in their kennels, the owner didn't seem to care. "If they die, they die," was her reply. STEER CLEAR!!! Don't break your heart or destroy your health by walking in their doors.

    Pros

    are there any?

    Cons

    anything and everything

  • 7. If you can't say something nice...

    by: AutumnPlatt

I know "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all," but in this case silence isn't the right thing. This is a very sad place. I don't know how it was when the owners first took it over, but they've lost touch with reality as far as believing that they're helping the animals. Filthy doesn't describe how dirty it is, and the animals, I'm starting to get teary-eyed right now just thinking about those animals I left behind. It really needs to be closed down. That's all I can say.

    Pros

    there aren't any

    Cons

    there are too many

  • 8. Not a pretty place

    by: mar6cats

I wasn't going to write a review on Puppyland because I wasn't sure if Zootoo really wanted true reviews, but I see other have, so I'd like to share my experience in the event anyone else is thinking of going there. This is a terrible place. I agree with others here in that I don't understand why it hasn't been shut down. The facilities are cold, unventilated, and absolutely filthy. I, too, saw sick animals housed with healthy. And to be honest, it wouldn't have been long before the healthy were sick. Zootoo--since our own law enforcement won't do anything--maybe you can.

    Pros

    none

    Cons

    like the others have said--everything

  • 9. Not a good place

    by: PennyLewis

I'm really surprised to see this place is even listed on here. I thought for sure it would have been shut down by now. When I was there it was filthy, litter boxes hadn't been changed in who knows how long, the place reeked of urine. If you want to save an animal from these go there, but you'd be better off going to a better shelter.

    Pros

    they try

    Cons

    horrible conditions

  • 10. Shocking!

    by: LeslieBaum

I read about this place in a local paper. Talked about how it was "no kill." Well, they don't euthanize for any reason--this is a good thing? I don't think so. I've heard others have coined this as a "slow-kill" shelter.

    Pros

    none

    Cons

    the place is terrible.

  • 11. Awful place

    by: LauraWilliamson

This place is absolutely horrible. It's filty, sick animals are in the room with healthy (at least they looked healthy), cats and dogs walking around the caged cats. Just nasty. This place is right up there with puppy mills.

    Pros

    none

    Cons

    should be shut down

  • 12. Be afraid. Be very afraid

    by: DorisKing

There aren't enough words to describe how horrible this place is. A "humane society"--I don't think so.

    Pros

there's nothing positive about the place

    Cons

everything is wrong with the place

  • 13. Awful place

    by: DarbyH

I can't believe this place is still open. It's an open sewer. Little or no ventilation, filthy, sick animals housed with healthy. If there are any law enforcement officials on this list that are reading this post, CLOSE THEM DOWN.

    Pros

    none

    Cons

    everything

  • 14. Close this place down!

    by: ClaireThomas

I visited this place just to see what all the talk was about. AWFUL. When I opened the door to the cat house, the smell of ammonia was so overpowering it took my breath away. There was feces, urine, and vomit all over the floors because there were free-roaming cats and dogs (supposedly the owners pets). I tried to get a sick cat out of there, but she wouldn't let me take it. I just broke my heart. I wonder if that cat is still alive. It would probably be a blessing if it passed.

    Pros

    none

    Cons

the place is a filthy hole

  • 15. Smells bad and some of the animals were mean and sick.

    by: sasha2cool

Smells bad and poop everywhere. Very bad place!

    Pros

None. No animal should ever have to go there.

    Cons

They don't take care of the animals there good at all.

  • 16. Horrible shelter

    by: NSchwechel

This is a terrible shelter. I visited once and was appalled by what I saw. It's the kind of place that should be shut down but there's no laws to make it happen.

    Pros

    No-kill policy

    Cons

    terrible conditions for animals
