  • 1. Life Long Friend

    by: matzellco

In the fall of '06, my dog passed away of cancer. I was devastated. I felt completely lost without him and it was especially hard conisdering that he had belonged to my deceased uncle who had passed away 2 years prior. But instead of mourning his death I decided to honor it by adopting a new dog. A day after Christas of that year, I spent over three hours at the Potsdam Humane Society trying to choose one dog. The staff members were incredible. They talked about each dog, tried to show ones that would fit my lifestyle and personality (I love being active and outside, hunting ect.). They talked about benefits of both an adult dog or a puppy and offered training advice. They allowed me and my mom, who came with me, to take our time, play with the dogs and really make a good decision. That day I walked out of the shelter with my new best friend, Luke. Luke is a lab/husky mix and I couldn't ask for a better dog or a better best friend. I couldn't imagine my life without him and I owe many of my thanks to PHS. All the staff members there are caring and truly want to find good homes for these animals. They called a couple of days after adopting Luke, to see how he was adjusting and they sent out a rep. to the house to make sure he was in good hands. This shows me just how caring they are. They deserve a grand round of applause.

    Pros

    Cons

    Couldn't decide on a dog!

  • 2. great shelter in a small town

    by: kkbgilbert

A great shelter that does wonderful work in our small town. We have gotten pets from this shelter in the past with great outcomes. The staff take the time to make a match with the client, its about finding a pet a home, not just getting them out of the shelter. Way to go Potsdam

    Pros

    Friendly Staff

    Cons

    Not open enough hours

  • 3. A Wonderful Place!!

Very wonderful people who care for animals as individuals and work hard to give them the best lives possible. Read my journal about how they were a huge help in the life of my dog, Major: http://www.zootoo.com/myzootoo/journal/entry/howpotsdamhumanesocietysavedmy

    Pros

Very helpful and caring, behavior assistance is great

    Cons

  • 4. Fantastic Staff!

    by: celivi06

I recently participated in one of the dog walking and leash handling seminars so that I could walk and play with the dogs. I am so glad that I did! The staff are extremely nice and it is clearly evident that they care a lot about each of the animals and that they get the proper care and attention. The animals are very clean, well cared for and given the attention they deserve.

    Pros

    very knowledgeable

    Cons

    limited space

    by: cynthiadusharm

I had seen this item several times before iI bought it. It was more expensive than other tools I have tried, but I decided to "go for it". I am so glad!! have three cats, and they all seem to like it. One male actually knows what "brush" means. He comes running for his turn...thinks it is a huge treat. It has cut down on my vacuuming a lot. Need I say more....???

    Pros

This is the best tool to reduce shedding in cats that I have ever found.

    Cons

so far, there are none I have found.

  • 6. Great Shelter!

    by: michaella7

I started working at PHS at the beginning of the semester because after visiting I fell in love with all of the animals there and knew I had to come back. I have been extremely impressed with how knowledgeable the staff is in regards to certain characteristics of breeds, illnesses, and their ability to read personality traits/compatibility. I have learned a great deal from those who work there and look forward to going every week. It has truly been a great experience.

    Pros

    very knowledgeable

    Cons

    too small

  • 8. review of the Potsdam Animal Shelter

    by: bearcollect201

My husband and I have been to the shelter a few times and have always been treated very nice. We have gotten three dogs from the shelter. I lost my husband last December and I still have two of the dogs that we got from the shelter. The dogs are rascel and juile. The first dog that we got from the shelter we had to give a wait because he was to strong and big for me to handle. Then we fell in love with rascel and juile, they are smaller and easy for me to care for. I would tell anyone that was looking for a dog or cat that the Potsdam Animal Shelter is the best place to go and find the animal of they choice.

    Pros

The people are all very kind

    Cons

I have never had a problem

    by: Frosty1963

My family has adopted many animals over the years from the Potsdam Animal Shelter and also had to take a few strays there. I have never had anything but a wonderful & caring greeting no matter what the issue. They are truly deserving of a new facility. Our animals need & deserve a safe haven.

    Pros

Great, caring people who do so much with so little

    Cons

Too small,a very old & outdated facility

  • 11. Great Experience at the Potsdam Humane Society

    by: AnneCW

We recently had to put our lab mix dog down. My family was devastated. After one week, my daughter convinced us we needed another dog. She wanted a puppy so we visited the Potsdam Humane Society. We looked at two different litters of puppies. The staff at the Potsdam Humane Society was so helpful. They questioned us on the type of dog we were looking for and shared characteristics of puppies in each litter. My daughter always wanted a beagle but they did not have one so she settled for a Walker coon hound. There was a litter of three to choose from. The staff spent a great deal of time discussing the personality of each puppy with us. We finally selected one of the male puppies. Once we finalized the adoption and returned home, we decided that we would adopt a second puppy. We called the shelter and they agreed to allow us to adopt the sister. We are very pleased with the puppies (Truman and Molly) and would recommend the Potsdam Humane Society to anyone looking to adopt a pet. These puppies adapted to their new surroundings very quickly and are very lovable.

    Pros

    Caring, Friendly, and Knowledgeable Staff

    Cons

Wish there were more people to adopt these pets

  • 13. Horrible shelter!!!

    by: animallover31

The staff there is so rude! We went there to look at puppies and the shelter wasn't open yet we seen staff walking in so we thought they were opening but guess not. Instead of kindly saying were not open yet the lady just walked in shut the door in our face and locked the door. Then we did get a puppy and had some difficulties and called and asked for some advice and they stated they would have a behavior specialist call back and she never returned our phone call. Then when I did call again to ask questions she was severely rude to me. I wouldn't ever go there again.

    Pros

    Cons

    horrible staff/rude and not helpful

  • 14. A Wnderful Experience

    by: nybirdlady

I am related to a woman who rescues animals. For years she had been telling me stories of a cocker in the outer Potsdam rural area who had been neglected by his owner. At the age of 12, the owner surrendered the dog to the Potsdam Shelter. My aunt called me immediately to ask if I could find someone to give this dog a home in the last years of his life. His name was Major. He was almost blind and deaf from untreated chronic ear infections. He was matted and starved. The shelter staff REFUSED to give up on him and had him groomed and neutered. I visited him once, andf I brought him home. The shelter staff called to inquire about him on several occassions. We had this incredible dog for only 1 1/2 years, but he changed our lives. He blended in to our clan of 3 other cockers and one mixed breed, and learned to use our doggie door, navigate the fenced in back yard, and our home before he lost his sight totally. Our 3 other cockers would walk beside him to guide him if he went off track once he went blind. Sadly, he became very ill and despite wonderful vet care, his past was against him. We had him cremated and he is always with us now. This dog learned to climb up on the couch to snuggle with us. He learned to trust and love again. The Potsdam Animal Shelter is THE BEST!

    Pros

Wonderful caring staff who treat animals with dignity

    by: RitaJB

I waited for 3 weeks for the cat I wanted to be let out of isolation because of a cold. Finally I got to meet him and I instantly feel in love. Crosby, his new name, spent a week getting used to his new home. He is now a very loving and social cat who greets me everyday when I walk into the house after work. The staff at Potsdam were good to work with and I am looking forward to many years with my new companion.

    Pros

    Very caring staff

    Cons

    by: msntobe

We adopted our "Mango" tabby cat from them a while ago and have been very pleased since then. The staff was knowledgable regarding the care, breed, and the like. They also looked at us carefully to ensure a good home for Mango. I was impressed! C Grudowski Potsdam, NY

    Pros

Very kind group of people with a "no kill' policy. We love our cat we adopted from the shelter.

    Cons

We could really use a make over.

  • 18. Pets

    by: catlover79

I have adopted one cat from there, myself. I have taken in most of the pets I have from other people that just wanted to get rid of them because of their flaws. I ask myself, no human is perfect, would you get rid of your kid? The one cat I adopted, named him Teado. He was a wonderful cat. I got him as a kitten from the Potsdam Humane Society. He was in a cage sitting in the back of all the rest of the orange kittens. Just hanging out waiting patiently. I had him taken out and we had an instant bond. He was my best friend. He played fetch like a dog. He was funny. He got to be huge. He had long orange hair. Beautiful cat. He slept with me every night. He had his hair brushed just about everyday. He only lived four years of his life but he lived them well. He passed away from a heart attack. He was mainly Maine Coon and the vet told me that they are known for enlarged hearts and they don't live very long. He passed away five years ago but I still miss him to this day. I would definately adopt again from PHS.

    by: Anna3878

I have listed myself as wanting to be notified if any Cavalier King Charles Span. dogs become available. I am the 1st to do so. We currently have a very loving CKCS that was resuced from a horrible life. If you learn of any in the Northern New York area and they need a home please contact the Potsdam Shelter as they have my details on how to reach me. This Shelter needs the make over so very badly as the current building is so very sad. the Staff are brilliant and they and the animals are what bring in to assist. We do hope the Contest allows our local shelter to win some money for their very deserving location.

  • 21. Go Potsdam!

    by: wife2004

The Potsdam Animal Shelter has been around as long as I can remember. We have adopted a beautiful dog from there and she is one of the best family members ever! We love her so much and thank the Potsdam Shelter for taking her and her siblings in or we would never have had her. The Potsdam Humane Society could evolve into something so much more beautiful and much larger if only the money and resources were available. An increase in space and volunteers/personnel would certainly enable this venture into something much more beautiful to our community. We're all rooting for you! Good luck next week!!!

    Pros

    Loving people

    Cons

Poor facility - really needs this makeover!

    by: michaz

This is a great shelter. The people involved care deeply for these animals and do a wonderful job taking care of them. The people in this area deserve a new place for the staff and volunteers to work. The animals deserve a new home where they can be cared for.

    Pros

    Dedicated and caring staff

    Cons

    Shelter needs to be updated

  • 24. My best friends came from the Potsdam Humane Society Shelter

    by: oak

My best friends came from the Potsdam Humane Society Shelter. They helped me find Bebop - a most lovable yellow lab who was my constant companion for about 14 years, and Atlantis - the loudest purring, drooling long-haired black cat who spent the winter under the woodstove. They make a great effort to promote the critters and find good homes for all of them.

    Pros

This shelter really cares about the animals they find homes for.

    Cons

I can't take all the animals home with me.

  • 25. They need a makeover!

    by: HELPFULHOPE

This shelter is in need of a makover and what better cause, these animals cant do anything about it, its not their fault their owners were worthless, abonded them surrendered them or abused them they deserve the best until they can find a wonderful loving, caring home!

    Pros

The staff seem knowledgeable and friendly

    Cons

The shelter itself is unfit and too small

  • 26. They try really hard

    by: chelsun

I've been to the Potsdam Humane Society a few times and my visits there left me feeling really sad. I can tell the staff is incredibly dedicated and really cares about the animals but the building is really old and it makes the shelter itself appear disorganized and messy (although this is not the fault of the staff). The customer service was good. I lost my cat a few summers ago and checked in there often to see if she'd been turned in and they showed a lot of empathy for my situation.

    Pros

Dedicated, caring, work well within their means

    Cons

    Small shelter

  • 27. Caring

    by: dbrown05

I have spent some time there with the staff due to the nature of my job. They keep the animals the priority and work with the potential owers to assure the animals a good home.

    Pros

    The animals are their priority

    Cons

Too many animals for the shelter, need more space

  • 28. Life Savers

    by: sheli08

I appreciate that we have the Potsdam Animal Shelter in the north country. They have helped me out two seperate occasions with finding homes for puppies. Recently my son was forsed to get rid of his puppies he had because the landlord decided not to allow animals anymore. The landlord gave him two days to get rid of the pups. I called the shelter and was able to bring one of the puppies to the shelter that afternoon. Mind you they don't normal take animals from people who live in the town of Canton or Ogdensburg. They were willing to bend the rules to help out.

    Pros

    Willing to help out

    Cons

    None

  • 29. Potsdam shelter very helpful

    Cons

  • 30. I am considering a new pet

    by: Virg73

I have recently lost my kitty for 12 years. He was my companion, buddy and sparring partner. I rescued him before he was sent to the shelter when he was but a small kitten. I am considering finding a new cat to fill the void I have had for the past 6 months. I enjoy listening to the animal shelter reports on the local radio station and hear all the good things the Potsdam Humane Society is doing to give critters good homes. There is an over population problem in our area and the folks at PHS are doing a wonderful job. I know it is overwhelming at times. I know they need more room for the work they do. They service a large area with a small staff and little resources. I know they work hard to be good stewards. I think they should be considered for the makeover for a number of reasons. 1. They have a heart to see animals of all varieties have good homes. They will not put down an animal just because they have not found a home yet. With today's economy, they are housing more and more than they probably expected. 2. St. Lawrence County is one of the nation's largest counties, yet it has a small population base. It is all rural. It is also one of the poorest. Geographically, there are many challenges faced by any organization servicing such a wide area. The PHS serves a large number of villages and towns. They are indeed the ONLY shelter servicing many of these areas. 3. They are in the middle of a capital campaign to raise needed monies to upgrade their current facilities. They are in need of major repair to drainage systems and building in general. These expenses can be overwhelming in today's economic times, people just don't have the extra funds. It is hard in an economically depressed area such as ours, but they have done a good job. They need more. 4. For the health of the animals they house. They need room to do their everyday screening, vet services, dog running area, and anything else they need to provide a safe, healthy pleasant environment for their charges while they await adoption. Though it is temporary, it is "home' for these critters and they deserve as nice as they can get. I hope they are considered for the makeover. If they do not get the grand prize, of which they are deserving, they should get some consolation anyway.

    Pros

    The animals and staff

    Cons

    Facilities need work...

i volunteer for this shelter in the summer and they care so much about their pets but they need more space... the dogs are always walked and the babies always cared for... they even train the dogs while they are there... all their pets are treated with care and when customers come in they are very helpful... i love this shelter!!

    Pros

    Cons

    none =]

  • 32. Nice Shelter

    by: alicia2486

I have never adopted an animal from the Potsdam Shelter but I did volunteer there for a while. I enjoyed being there, playing with the cats and dogs. One thing I didn't like was some of the staff weren't very friendly. As soon as I arrived, they told me to go pet the cats or walk the dogs, but they never really talked to me. I love animals and love learning about them so I wish they would have been a little friendlier when I volunteered there. The shelter definitely needs some work, hence the race to get a makeover. It is overcrowded and small. We live in a small area where the economy isn't great, so we could really use some help up here. Otherwise, I love the animals that come in and the staff seems eager to help people with adoptions.

    Pros

    staff, pets, care

    Cons

    overcrowded

Since I have moved to Potsdam, I have adopted 3 dogs from the Potsdam Animal Shelter. Two of them lived healthy, happy lives through the age of 14. My latest one is a Black Lab-Chow mix and he is adorable. The shelter is always giving me friendly training advice and I have since become a volunteer walker. You will be hard pressed to find a group of more dedicated staff than Ann, Cathy and the rest of the crew who lovingly care for the animals and try to find the best homes for them. Visit, volunteer and/or adopt!

Best of Luck on the makeover, you all deserve it.!!

We adopeted a kitten from the Potsdam Humane Society and found it a good experience. We took our time and visited off and on to make sure of our decision to adopt was wise. The staff was very patient and understanding. When we finally decided on a pet they helped walk us through the process and satisfied any questions we had. Our familly would definately go back in the future to adopt again!

    Pros

    by: loverofallanimals

I have gone to the potsdam humane society atleast twice a year because I couldn't get my dog fixed and she keep having puppies the staff there never once got rude with me. the took the puppies to a clean and roomy kennel as soon as i got there with them. when the puppies were all adopted out they would call me to let me know. They even helped me get my dog fixed. I think they really deserve everything they can get because they do need a bigger shelter and more help with supplies for the shelter. I really hope they win this because they need it so very much. Kimberly golden :)

I personally am very fond of Potsdam's Humane Society. I think its well organized and quite clean. I have not gotten a pet from there because my brother is allergic but i plan to eventually. But my one complaint is that it is very well known around the town. I would think that since Potsdam is a college town many students would be clued in.

    Pros

    Its a nice facility/well organized.

    Cons

    not very popular.

  • 42. Caring People

    by: FLEX014

The people that work at the Potsdam Humane Society deeply care about the animals that come in....I just wish that they would be blessed with the opportunity to have outside help help them help these poor animals. They really do care about the animals, I can see it when I was there with my family a couple years ago..They were verry knowledgeable and I just had this feeling that the people there grew attached to these poor animals. Hopefully people will recognize that the Potsdam Humane Society really only cares about one thing: the animals that are fortunate enough to be there.

    Pros

The people care about the animals

    Cons

They don't have enough money to keep up with the animals

  • 43. Would recommend

    by: Kathym226

I got two kittens from the shelter last May. The help was very friendly and eager to assist me when I wanted help. They were running a special - Buy a Furry Friend, get a Furry Friend Free! and I definitely had "sucker' written all over my face. They were very accommodating as I played with all the kittens and made my final choices. My vet commented on how very healthy they both were - no fleas, mites, etc. I would recommend a visit by anyone considering adding a pet to their family.

    Pros

Friendly staff, animals well cared for, nice gift package

    Cons

    Too small!!!!

I got my dog (Curly) from The Potsdam Humane Society 3 years ago as a puppy. He is a Black Lab and German Shepard Mix. He is the most amazing dog in the world! He has never chewed on anything nor destroyed anything in the house! He loves to play and run! :) I would strongly reccomend adopting a pet (or more than one!) from the Potsdam Humane Society! Their facility is really clean, the Staff is really helpful and really nice and they help you find an animal that fits what you are looking for! Thank you so much PHS for an amazing Dog! :)

    Pros

Very Clean, Staff is really helpful! And their animals are amazing!

Too many pets for a small shelter...

    by: highflatscathouse

I can't say enough about the PHS! They are great there. They work well with anyone that comes in to adopt a pet and they never turn away any abandoned dog or cat either. And one of the best things I think they do is they never allow a newly adopted animal go home without being spayed or neutered.

    Pros

    Great employees

    Cons

    Not enough space

  • 53. Got my Jimmy Kitty here and could not have made a better choice!

    by: teachergirl95

My cat Jimmy was adopted from this shelter about 4 years ago. Our family wouldn't be complete without him. He was very well taken care of and had been there for 3-4 months before we adopted him. I wanted to adopt him because I know that adult cats are less likely to be adopted and he was super playful and had/has a HUGE personality. I give the shelter staff lots of credit because Jimmy looked so good, despite the fact that he is a long haired Maine coon mix. Thanks!!

    Pros

spayed and neutered and tested for feline leuk

    Cons

didn't have much room to socialize with the animal before making choice

  • 56. MITZY our winnig cat

    by: sheilabill

We adopted Mitzy from Potsdam 6 years ago. She was a very small kitten, the runt that some one didn't want. She was receiving special care as she was under two lbs. They had I believe foster care in which someone took her home with them and gave her extra attention to eat. We first feed her out of our hand , then spoon..finally a dish. She won the Friskies calendar contest that year. Besides our supply of cat food for a year..we were able to give back from our joy from her winning.. Potsdam animal shelter was given 12 cases (24 cans /case) and 30 6.3 lb bags of dry cat food. So yes ! I Wish they win.

    Pros

    Very caring

    Cons

    to small

  • 57. Our town's shelter

  • 58. This is the best shelter I have come acrossed in a long time!

    by: Katsmeow47

My daughter was driving one day to her grandmother's, and the road was that dirty snow all over, and as my daughter was driving by she saw a movement out of the corner of her eye. She saw a small white dog laying helpless in the what was left of the snow bank. She backed up and told the dog to get up baby you are going to get hurt! She decided to watch where the dog went, to an old barn where there was no cattle or anything. She decided to look for the owner. She knocked on doors to no avail. Only one person answered the door and and they said the dog wasn't their's. So she decided to take the dog home. She put the heater on full blast to warm the dog on the way home. When she got the dog home she tried to give it water, she knew the dog was hungry and thirsty. But the dog wouldn't drink. She decided to look a little closer and found the dog had quills in its thoat. She tried to help the poor dog, but the dog needed medicial attention. She couldn't afford it, so the only thing she could do was take it to the dog warden, which in turn took the dog to the Potsdam Animal Shelter. They immediately took care of Honey. Which my daughter named her. My daughter was heart broken, she fell in love with the dog. She really wanted to take care of her. But of course there is a waiting period, to see if the owners show up to claim her. Of course not. So Honey was put up for adoption. She is a beautiful and loving dog and very smart. We thought the shelter had an owner lined up for her, but when they noticed a small lump on her back and i think there was one on her side to. The person who wanted to adopt her backed out. The medical bill would be too much. When I found this out, I went to the shelter and talked to them. I told them the story of another dog my daughter had. My daughter wanted Honey very badly. And the shelter knew this and the cost would be great and my daughter couldn't afford it. So they came up with a way that Honey and my daughter could be together. My daughter is a foster parent so to speak..lol. When the shelter called me to tell me that everything was all set, I was never so happy! They even told her they would help with the food and everything concerning Honey. Honey still needs a test to find out if she has cancer or not. And the shelter is raising the money to get this done. You can imagine the surprise on my daughter's face, when me and my boyfriend brung her the dog. I have never seen her so happy. Honey was happy to, she knew it was my daughter. They played in the snow for a while. It was a wonderful site to see. So I have everything great to say about this animal shelter. They are the far best in the North Country in my opinion.

    by: brdanner

The Potsdam Humane Society is undergoing a major transition. It's outgrowing its old facility and is in a major effort to move into new, modern building. It needs all the support that it can to give local pets the care they deserve.

    Pros

We were very satisfied with the attention to pet placement

    Cons

    The facilities are undergoing transition

  • 63. Imagine what they could do

    by: lbradley

The Potsdam animal shelter does so much with so little. Imagine what they could do with more space and better facilities. The animals we have adopted from them have brought so much to our lives. There is no dollar amount you could put on the love we have for our pets. I respect the tough love that the staff have for customers. They always put the animals needs first. Thanks for doing all that you do!

  • 65. Life with a Princess

    by: susette76

In November we were told to visit the shelter b/c there was a dog that resembled our beloved dog Cocoa, a 13 yr old cocker spaniel mix past shelter puppy that died from cancer and since has left a void in our hearts. * the void was huge b/c not only did she have to be put to sleep but at the same time Heidi our 14 yr old Border Collie mix who suffered from Alzheimers was put down too. We e-mailed Potsdam's shelter for more info and within a few minutes they contacted me with info on princess- we feel in love with her. She has since become a welcomed addition to the family. She is an eight yr old cocker spaniel and a sweetheart. She adapted well to our "zoo". She does have some odd quirks but that is what makes her sweet. The employees at the shelter made it so easy to adopt Princess - within 45 minutes we met the dog, filled out papers and were on our way home. What great service!!! Thanks Potsdam Shelter!

    Pros

    Easy adoption proceedings

    Cons

    too small

  • 66. Great Shelter

    by: Carrie820

I adopted my dog there when she was just a pup (she's four now). She was too young to come home, and for a week and a half, the shelter staff put up with me coming in every other day to play with her. She had the easiest transition home I have ever seen. We're both so grateful to the excellent staff and the facility for giving us to each other.

    Pros

    Cons

  • 72. Great!

    by: wolfgm

People and pets at this shelter are so wonderful! I volunteer to train and socialize the dogs that are staying there. I think they have good policies about training, very consistent and good record keeping. I agree that the animals should be spayed/neutered before leaving the shelter because we all want to prevent future strays and unwanted animals. The staff try very hard to maintain clean facilities and a safe environment for the animals! Very flexible with volunteer staff and eager to give advice to anyone who needs it.

    Pros

Helpful, care about fate of aniamls, good training program

    Cons

    Small, Need more space

I have made regular donations to the potsdam human society for the last couple of years. I often stop on my way home from work to see what animals are available. It is so difficult walking by the dogs and not taking one home, but I am waiting for the right one to come along and the timing to be right. Thanks for all you do.

    Pros

  • 74. never adopted from here

    by: margo052002

My neighbor got his dog from here and he has nothing but good things to say. As far as the shelter refusing owners, I think it is important for them to make sure that the pets are going to the best homes possible and that they won't see the pet back at the shelter ever again. To me that is not cruel, it is responsible.

This is where I adopted my beutiful cat from. Ringo is just gorgeous. He was cat cat that someone else did not want and I ended up the lucky one. The one thing that is upsetting is no one from the shelter has ever called to check to see if the cat made the adjustment into becoming a member of the family. I would recommened pet adoption over buying from a pet store.

    Cons

    small area, gloomy

The shelter goes the extra mile by giving dogs basic training. They try to make sure that the pet is suited to the home. The website is kept up to date. This shelter has improved so much in the past few years.

    Pros

  • 78. my experience adopting

    by: pattya66

All things aside they were really great. I at that time had an older dog that they had me bring in. I drove like 20 miles each way to visit and make sure I could handle him and that he would get along with the my other dog. I had 1 day planned to take him home but then I just couldn't deal with the thought of trying to get him in the cage again he does not like cages. So I took him home with me early. I have read some people complaints about their adoption process but all they really have is everyones best interest in mind. They care about the animals. What brought me to this shelter: I saw him at my parents house in a photo they took, and he showed up while I was there, he was very skinny and then a week later I heard there lost & found pets on the radio while on my way out of town for the day. And then on my day off I went to see if it was him and it was. I just had to have him!!!

    Pros

they care about the pet & the adopting person of the animal

    Cons

my dogs experience with the vet there

  • 79. Not Recommend

    by: Kiyota

In 2007, when I had to give up my beloved Rottweiler, the staff didn't seem to care that it was breaking my heart to have to leave him there. When comforting my scared dog, I was yelled at by the trainer 'not to encourage his fear'. I was not encouraging his fear, but trying to comfort him when he was terrified, attempting to calm him down. When I returned to the shelter to take Ranger home again, after finding a place that would allow him to keep such a large breed dog, they denied me! They said I was unfit, someone who has no other pets, but moved from my brother's home, where pets were not allowed, into a place where I could have him. I was so appalled at this, that they would deny him a good loving home with the person who had cried tears over loosing him and cried herself to sleep many nights over not having him. They chose instead to keep him in the shelter, where he pretty much rotted away into a shell of what was a beautiful and loving dog. They ended up euthanizing him because of some kind of supposed disease he had. What I find utterly ridiculous about that is, he was perfectly healthy with me, Veterinarian confirmed healthy. I never returned to that shelter again. My landlord had even come with me to the shelter to prove that I had the permission to bring him home. She was also appalled by their treatment of me. She even said she would never adopt from the shelter again. I would not, nor will I ever recommend this place to anyone. Nor will I support a place that will refuse someone to take a pet on the grounds that they moved from one home to another better place for the pet. I support Massena Humane SOciety 100%. Their staff is beyond caring and understanding.

The Potsdam Humane Society is always my choice to get a pet from becaue they are honest with you. They are more than willing to help with anything you need and help you find the right dog you need and want. Everyone who works there has been overly helpful. They let you take the dog outside to play with you so the dog can see they like you and how you like the dog. They helped me find the right dog, and they keep in contact very well. They have info. on the dog and do safer tests to make sure the dog is safe. I wouldn't go anywhere else to get a pet!

About one year ago I adopted a four month old beagle mix, then named Timmy. The staff and volunteers were extremely helpful in facilitating our meeting and in expediting the adoption paperwork. They followed up with me by telephone and I was able to tell them how well, Timmy now Barnabas, was doing. Now I am looking for a playmate/companion dog for my Barney. Again, I am working with Potsdam on it. The first two dogs Barney and I have met unfortunately were not good fits, but even with that everyone there has been helpful and encouraging. I can't say enough good things about the Potsdam Humane Society!

    by: mcooke41

Over the years we have adopted two kittens and one mature cat from this shelter. The staff's primary concern seems to be for the animal and in ensuring a good match between owner and pet. In the event we wanted or needed another pet, it would be the first place we would look. I give a lot of credit to the folks who are working hard to make this a better shelter and raise community awareness of the job they are doing.

A knowledgeable staff trying to deal with an aging, crowded facility

    Cons

  • 98. Great Place

    by: JamieManning

I first meet the people at the potsdam Humane society when I was sadly giving up my dog. I felt like my heart was being ripped out of my chest, but after talking with the people that worked there I knew that this was the best option. They made sure that my dog got the best possible home and kept me updated and everything. They really cared about me and the dog and I'm just so happy that everything worked out. I went back just recently with my brother to pick out a cat. After spending some time there, He decided he was going to help raise money to help them and the animals out. He sat the roof of his Cafe for 12 hours and raised 3500 dollars!! we are still coming up with ideas and will be raising more money later on, and the reason behind all this is simply because these people really love the animals, and people who really care that much deserve all the help we can give them!

    Pros

    They really love the animals!

    Cons

They cant always give the animals what they need!

  • 99. Potsdam Humane Society is the best!

    by: littleja

We have twice adopted dogs from the Potsdam Humane Society. We adopted our beloved Bandit (adult male) in January, 1996, whom we took to the vet for the last time in April, 2008. We missed him so much that we began looking for a new dog almost immediately. As was the case back in 1996, the Potsdam location came through for us once again and we picked up sweet Raven in April, 2008. Both times, we visited three shelters and found the Potsdam people to be the most informative and helpful. For Raven, we perused Northern New York shelters online, and did inquire about one dog. We were given a number to call where the dog was currently staying, but the person had decided to keep the dog himself. The Potsdam Humane Society is in a great location, is open many hours each week, and the personnel are very friendly.

    Staff is friendly and knowledgeable

    Cons

    They need bigger facilities

It was quite awhile ago that we adopted a dog from there,... then a cat a few years later. We had great luck with both pets. The cat had been at the shelter for several years, and they knew he was a good cat, so they kept him around until someone adopted him. The dog ended up being from someone we knew slightly, who just didn't want a dog. He was a great pet too.

I just adopted a cat yesterday, this is the third or fourth time I have adopted in the years we have lived here. The shelter gets better and better. The new cat - Bodhi is doing well, she is spayed, has her shots and is full of 'piss and vinegar'. Thank you to the shelter and the community.

    Pros

they care, and the animals are have vet care and love

    Cons

    small town- little money

  • 103. Memory Lane

    by: MCKGATES

I am originally from the North Country and used to volunteer at Potsdam Humane Society with a friend. We were 7 years old and played with the adoptable cats for a few hours every week [we loved cats and thought we were making a great 7yr old's resume]. Back then, Norma ran the place and she wasn't too fond of our company, yet she never refused us... Even so, my mom managed a good relationship with Norma and we adopted our favourite childhood cat from PHS! But I'm in NC now and have to vote for my local shelter, as it is part of my thesis, resume, and passion.

    Pros

    My childhood cat

    Cons

    Wasn't friendly 15-20 years ago

  • 104. Potsdam Animal Shelter Rocks!

    by: sarahmk

Potsdam Animal Shelter is such a great place to get your next pet from! They are kind, patient and very knowledgeable.

    Pros

They have all the best animals in the State!

    Cons

Can't take all the animals home

  • 105. My Boxer

    by: angelaposte

i adopted a Boxer here at this shelter and he was the best dog ever. I had a great experience at this shelter and would defitenly adopt here again. They make it easy for you to adopt and I like the fact that they make you do paper work so not just any person can adopt an animal. They want to make sure that you are responsible enough to adopt the animal and are able to take care of it. After all you dont want to have someone adopt an animal and not be able to take care of it and have the animal suffer. Overall they are a great shelter and could really use the makeover!!!

    Pros

very easy to adopt a pet

    Cons

    very small

  • 106. The Best

    by: AnthonyEsposito

This shelter really would benefit from receiving money for a makeover because the animals are worth it in the long run.

    Pros

Great place to get and play with animals.

    Cons

Small place and would love to see it expand.

  • 107. The Best

    by: maryr1962

Potsdam Humane Society is a great place to adopt a pet. As for the complainer in the previous post. There are rules for a reason. They already have a large enough problem with unwanted animals with out contributing to the problem themselves. You should explain that to your child so they grow up to be responsible pet owners.

    Pros

    Helpful friendly

    Cons

    needs new facility

  • 108. Volunteer

    by: helpful

I have volunteered at the animal shelter before in my spare time and also took one of my clients there to volunteer the staff were always nice whenever we went.

    Pros

Willing to have anyonme come in to help, even if its just to give attention to the animals

    Cons

small and needs to be updated and have more seculded areas for the different animals

  • 109. needs a facelift

    by: nweakfall

Overall, I would go to the Potsdam Humane Society to get a pet any day. The people are very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. You can tell immediately that they care for the animals and they love what they do. I think that the physical setting of the humane society is what is unfortunate. It is kept clean, but it is small. The animals do not have much room to move around. It is in great need of some updates.

    Pros

    caring workers, knowledge of staff

    Cons

size of establishment, room for animals

  • 110. Small town Love

    by: ddlayaw

For a small town establishment this shelter is great. The staff are very knowledgable and friendly and really try hard to help out all the animals that they can

  • 111. Would adopt from again1

    by: mmeherne

I adopted my first animal from that shelter. They were wonderful. They truly care about their animals and we were amazed at all the things we received as part of the adoption fee. Our little Terabyte is still doing very well, she very healthy and happy. I would consider adopting from this shelter again even though I now live 5 hours away!

    Pros

fixing animal included in price, other bonuses.

    Cons

I no longer live close to that shelter

  • 112. Great Place

    by: ham7137

I haven't adopted from potsdam, but have been there numerous times and find the animals well cared for and clean. They also put a lot of effort into finding the right homes for each animal.

    Pros

Very clean, Animals well cared for

    Cons

    none

  • 113. Potsdam Support

    by: crumpie13

My family has gotten several animals from here over the years. The staff has always been friendly and caring. There are so many animals in our area that need good homes and the Potsdam animal shelter does its best to house these animals until a home can be found for them. The only down side to this shelter is that it is too small to be able to house the many animals that need a warm place to stay until they have a home of their own. I would love to see this shelter win the contest so they may continue to support the many animals in our community as they await new homes!

    Pros

very helpful and caring staff looking out for the animals' best interests

    Cons

Small shelter...with too many animals and not enough space to house them all

  • 114. Good & Bad Experiences

    by: snickybugg

My fiance's Dad adopted an adult cat from the shelter is 2005 when he was diagnosed with cancer. Basically a companion. When his Dad passed away in December *05* my fiance and I ended up with the cat. Within a few days she started to act weird and wouldn't eat/drink and couldn't stand up by herself. We found out less than a week later, she had feline lukemia (spell) and had to put her down. We called the Shelter and they said they couldn't do anything about it, b.c. she was in a cage the entire time they had never tested her for the cancer, they only tested floor cats. We were heartbroken and angry. Then recently we went in to find a kitten for our 3 yr old cat. He was alone most of the time b.c we were working (like most of us!). We ended up walking out with an 8 week old puppy!! He's great so far, and hyper as ever, even our kitty loves him. I guess everything ended up as a 'happy ending'.. I hope that they get a makeover so they can have more room for the kitties/puppies and hopefully make it smell a bit better!

    Pros

Lots of animals to choose from and young staff is friendly

    Cons

    Semi-stinky and small

  • 115. Potsdam for Pets

    by: saffry

We got our first pets here over 10 years ago. We wanted to only get one cat, but were too soft to take a sister and leave her brother behind. So we had two energetic, healthy, sweet cats for years and years. Two years ago we got Zeppo there. He was a puppy, and there was some confusion about which breed he was. But he's grown to be friendly and healthy too. The shelter was so helpful in preparing paperwork and making sure we knew all the steps to getting him fixed and registered. And we got an excellent recommendation for a trainer as well. If we ever want another pet, we'll go there again.

    Pros

Very kind and they love the animals

    Cons

    Mis-identified our Lab/shepard as a Lab/Pit bull

  • 116. A+

    by: colby108

I was conisdering adopting a kitten/cat a while ago and went in to the shelter to see what they had. The staff was very kind and showed me the cats they had and explained the adoption process to me. I ended up deciding that it wasn't the right time to adopt another cat, but when I do I'll be going to them!

    Pros

    Nice & helpful staff

    Cons

needs more space - but the makeover could fix that!

  • 117. Do the best with what they can

    by: helenbrk

The Potsdam Animal Shelter does the best they can with what they have. The staff is very kind and knowledgeable, but the facility is rundown. They are in desperate need of a new shelter with better facilities and thus able to better care for the animals and to provide better programs for the public.

    Pros

    Caring Staff and Good Care

    Cons

    Old Facility

  • 118. Tops in care!

    by: patturner

This shelter is so caring. The staff work unbelievebly hard in a cramped environment. The building is too small, unventilated, and literally beginning to fall down and they are pledged to save the animals even when overcrowding might force more drastic solutions. The workers there will take animals into their homes to cope with population fluctuations, or infections in the animals. The Board is so supportive and very active in their support. The Board is spearheading a campaign at the moment to raise $750,000 for a new facility. They, along with loyal volunteers are workeing tirelessly to achieve this goal. They have already raised$250,000.

    Pros

They really care and will do anything to save animals

    Cons

    Need a new building!!!

  • 119. I love the Potsdam Humane Society

    by: jrubio

This shelter is staffed by very caring individuals. They talk to the dogs and cats, and work to find loving families who will adopt them. They do excellent follow-ups to make sure the adoptions worked out.

    Pros

    Very kind people, well-cared-for animals.

    Cons

Not open as often as I would like.

  • 120. Potsdam Humane Society-great place to find a new pet!

    by: davkarbelgians

We have adopted 2 great dogs from the Potsdam Humane Society. This is our #1 place to go when we are looking to adopt a dog. We have had wonderful experiences both times and we would not hesitate to go there the next time we are ready to adopt!

    Pros

    Wonderful staff-great shelter

    Cons

I think they should educate the public a bit more about the pit bull type breeds so they are better prepared to successfully adopt them.

    by: ShirleyM

As I drove by the Potsdam Shelter this morning, I thought of all the puppies who have become part of my Life who came from the Shelter---Stendhal, Tory, Benjy, Silvi, Tanya. They all came from there, and were all wonderful. They included a Shepherd, a poodle, a Border Collie, and two so mixed they were just Americans...... And, I'm pleased to say they all got along really well with the one or two Kitties I've always had. I never had to go to get the Kitties; they've always just shown up on my doorstep.....the last two being Witty and Quicki. Mixed in with them, a few other little ones over the years : fish, notably Kinney, who grew to be a footlong( 20 gallon tank), and rabbit, Mr. Bun,and others. They have all enriched my life very, very much.

    Pros

Caring people who loved their charges...

    Cons

Need more space and sure could use that upgrade (hint)

  • 123. Potsdam Animal Shelter

    by: pebblerock3028

I have gotten a few pets from this shelter and they were the greatest pets. Buster was a seven week old beable/mix and I got him for my son for his birthday. Buster was so easy to house break and the best playmate for my kids but we lost him at just the short age of 7yrs. to cancer. Then we got Zoey, she was 3 monthsold and really helped with the loss of Buster and I still have her. She is really a sweet dog. But when I was looking for a new pet the staff does not treat people very well. I know it is their job to help the animals get good homes but they need to go about it a different way. Sometimes they do make people feel like bad owners when there not. We are there to help the animals too not just them like they make you feel.

    Pros

    Great Animals

    Cons

    Staff can be rude

  • 124. nice cat

    by: sarahsweetheart

We got an awesome cat from here but he had terrible ear mites and upper resp. infection. after a trip to the vet and some meds he is much better. It is still sad to see all the animals there that need homes as with any shelter. My husband was so touched by his experience he is doing a fundraiser to help them out.

    Pros

    location is easy to find

    Cons

it is sad to go there

  • 125. Great finds

    by: dncflint

We have three wonderful pets, adopted from the Potsdam Animal Shelter. Two cats, Tiggy and Andy, and our dog Sweetie, all marvelous finds! We know that we have the BEST animals in the world thanks to the great care they had at the shelter. Most of all I was impressed at the love and care that each and every animal gets there! When we adopted our dog, all of the volunteers there came out to the car with tears in their eyes to say good bye to Sweetie! And the name that you gave her was perfect for her, for she is truly a Sweetie!! Kudos to the Potsdam folks and good luck! Cindy Flint

    Pros

    True caring for the animals!

    Cons

  • 126. my mom's best friend

    by: mptchick

My mother was looking for a companion in her later years and we went to Potsdam Humane Society. They had taken our "Sammy" back from an abusive family and he was a little shy and timid. He turned out to be the best dog and friend for my mom... he gave her the reason to get up and down every few hours and to have companionship. They were great to help this poor old dog out of a bad situation and find him a loving home. The staff was kind and understanding.

    Pros

accessable animals, good meet and greet areas

    Cons

it is too small for our community

  • 127. Oh little brown dog, what did we get?

    by: Cathylyn

We adopted the cutest little brown puppy about three years ago and I am still addicted to checking out their web site. It is wonderful. They have a strong foster care program in place. They also have dog trainers and more of an emphasis on education. At the time we adopted they didn't. We were in a very cramped area with other shelter business going on around us. Forgetting what questions we wanted to ask and not knowing what we needed to ask. A Puppy is a puppy right? It's feet look smallish so it won't get too big. Seems happy enough on this towel on this examining table. You just can't assume that a puppy is a blank slate. We did that without asking too many questions to the staff. That was our mistake. We adopted a puppy that was too young to be taken from it's mother, so of course not socialized by it's mother and siblings. The puppy was in the shelter alone when she was in her fearful stage and that also shows. This mistake, however, was one of the best ones we have ever made. Oh what an education we are getting and the pleasures we are getting by watching her progress. We don't just go for walks, we go on adventures. We don't bark and snarl at everyone we see, and we even share the sidewalk. Oh some people have looked at us in disgust but we know we are making progress and we will continue to do so. Thank You Potsdam Animal Shelter for taking in this puppy when her first cruel owner left her in an abandoned apartment. Thank you for letting us take her home.

  • 129. They care when we can't.

    by: dsevey

I have two dogs and two cats -- all adopted from the Potsdam Humane Society. The staff has always been very helpful and caring. The animals are well cared for, however, their housing conditions are in need of updating and room for more animals is necessary. I think it is a concern of our country, with its floundering economy, that animals will be some of the first to suffer. The Potsdam Shelter has made do with so little for so long, I applaud their efforts to make things better.

    Pros

    Caring staff

    Cons

    Inadequate housing for animals

  • 130. Doing so much with so little (space that is)

    by: TC13676

Despite severe space limitations, the Potsdam animal shelter has grown professionally and popularly over the years. Because of their cramped space, the facility has fallen prey to several outbreaks of transmitted disease in years past. Thankfully current management has taken the drastic steps needed to mitigate these events in a facility where it is impossible to separate new arrivals. Newly instituted volunteer involvement programs have helped ensure that dogs are kept mentally and physically active during their (hopefully brief) stays. Their newly implemented foster program has also helped make great strides in finding living arrangements for pets not really disposed toward adoption.

    Pros

    Openness, Professionalism, Active Booster Group

    Cons

    Cramped, Cramped and Cramped!

  • 131. A shelter that truely cares!

    Pros

very informative on all aspects of animals care.

    Cons

needs more room to help more animals

  • 132. Sweet kitties...

    by: jneener

The Potsdam Humane Society cares for so many animals and is in need of a larger space for separation of animals who are brought in from those who are healthy and have been in the facility. They are involved in a fund raiser to improve housing and care. We adopted 3 kittens (from a litter of 8) from them who were cared for by an employee at her home until they were ready to leave their mother. They were and are well-adjusted, healthy, and continue to be part of our family.

    Pros

Staff very caring and helpful in managing the shelter.

    Cons

The facility is too small..they are doing a fund raiser to add to space to separate animals as needed.

    by: katym77

I adopted the sweetest kitty of all time from the Potsdam Humane Society. She was a wee, little kitten when I adopted her - small enough to sit on my knee. Now she's a healthy, lanky brown and black beauty. She had a bit of a kennel cough when I got her, but I expected that since that's pretty common. Her health is excellent now. She is cheerful, rambunctious and my joy. I really liked the staff at the Potsdam Humane Society. They were kind and sympathetic, and could tell I really loved my little kitty from the get-go. All their questions were perfectly reasonable. I would go back there anytime to adopt another pet. I've got three right now, and that's all I can do for now!

    Pros

    Cons

Need a bigger space - not really their fault, though.

    by: JPinover

This is a wonderful, small shelter that tries so hard to care for and find homes for all the homeless, unwanted animals in our area. The 50+yr. old building is in desperate need of renovation, which is coming this spring. The staff/volunteers are amazing!

    Pros

    Cons

I think that PHS is doing a great job with the resources that they have available to them right now. They house as many animals as they can, and do their best to upkeep the shelter. They are very knowledgeable. This contest would help them alot.

  • 144. shelter

    by: rromlein

As I said, there are lots of animals to chose from. However, getting to interact with the animals, aka touching them or trying to get to know them is nearly impossible. Very protective staff that keeps you at arms length from the animals, which makes it frustrating. They are very particular about what type of home is good enough for their pets, to the point where if you say they will be allowed outside, or that you already have a pet, they will refuse to let you adopt. They need to relax their strict policy and realize that although many people may not have the perfect home, it is much better then a cage in the shelter.

    Pros

lots of animals to chose from

    Cons

    overprotective staff

    by: ziggyyme

I just wanted to write a quick review to let The Potsdam Animal Shelter know that we have been so happy with our little dog Basil! I can tell you that he is not only loved by us but by many who see his pictures I so often take and also the ones that come in contact with him. Basil is sweet and was well recieved from the shelter where he was taken very good care of. Basil continues to get his hair cuts at Bows and Bandanas where he also loves to go and see the other animals and staff! Christopher always comes out and greets us and makes Basil seem happy and comfortable to be there. I hope the animal shelter gets lots of points and donations as I feel they all work hard to keep the animals happy and the homes well matched for the animals that need a long term place to be loved. Keep up the great work Everyone!\r\nEarline

    Pros

    Cons

More people should utilize the shelter and not dump baby animals here and there!

What a wonderful place Potsdam Humane Society is for animals that are homeless. They give them great medical care, socialization, and love. Thanks to everyone who helps take care of god's critters. Also volunteering not only consists of your time, but you can volunteer by donating supplies, fundraising and outreaches in the community, so when you are shopping pick up an extra can of food or treats or toys for the critters!!! Lastly a treat for the staff is always nice.

    Pros

They love all of the animals!!!!

    Cons

    Not enough volunteers and money

  • 149. Three loving family members thanks to PHS!

    by: dobeyt

I have adopted 3 family members from the Potsdam Human Society over the past 18 years. The first was Buddy who we had from a pup of 8 weeks to the day he passed on at the ripe ol' age of 13. He was a valuable family member filling our lives with excitement and love. He was a great big furry guy with lots of shedding hair and a thurst for running! Many a times he was sneaky and tried to get away from us but always returned to where he was loved! He was a little fluff ball who would melt your heart once you could get past the stare of his wolfy-like yellow eyes! We sorely miss Bud and hope there are many treats and squirrels to chase (his favorite pastime) in doggy heaven!\r\n\r\nAbout 3 to 6 months after Bud's passing we adopted Koda. Koda came to us as a baby too, a fluffy bundle of Rotty joy! During the past 5 years his health has been a challenge at best but I wouldn't trade him for anything! Koda has been riddled with health conditions, which, thanks to his loving vet, has been determined to be a result of allergies to just about every type of food, growing too quickly and clumsiness. We have been able to move past all this and now he is a happy healthy 4 1/2 year old pupper. \r\n\r\nHe is really clumsy and as a result managed to blow out his ACL while running around in the back yard. But again with the loving care of his doctor he is all repaired and on the run again! Koda, our gangly tall baby boy loves his family dearly, especially his 10 year old human brother who he loves to share the back seat with on rides!\r\n\r\nKoda has managed to melt the hearts of our neighbors and changed many a persons mind about the assumption that Rotts are bad!\r\n\r\nNow there is Kas. She has been with us just a little over a year. She has been our first female adult adoption and was a huge decision for our family. With adopting an adult you never know what trouble you may be getting in to as a result of her past experiences, education, etc. Kassy has been a great addition though! \r\n\r\nWhen we first met our Rotty girl she was shy as all get out and did the drop and four legged brace when going in to buildings. She was very shy and did not care if you were present our not she just stood there, back to you and not seeking out attention. It only makes me wonder what awful things happened to her in the past. We never knew much about Kassy's past because she was a reported stray wondering the streets of St. Lawrence County.\r\n\r\nSince Kas has grown to trust her forever family and has moved past most of her fears and is become a very pampered pooch with her Rotty brother Koda. She somehow thinks she is a lap dog. Must be no one has ever told her that she weighs about 100 lbs. and is REALLY HEAVY on your lap! But she loves to snuggle and puts her head on your shoulder and melts your heart with her big brown eyes!\r\n\r\nThey enjoy daily naps on the couch, sometimes hourly! Romps in the freshly fallen snow and runs in the waters of the county's lakes and waters. They eat the best of food, since both are allergic to many food items and if not restricted, end up sick and having skin problems. A small price to have to pay to have healthy happy kids though!\r\n\r\nWe are so greatful to have added these guys to our family. The Potsdam Humane Society were great in every adoption and worked with us every step of the way with paperwork, know how and tips! Granted there are a lot of things you discover after the pets come to your home, but, isn't that just a fact of life? If you have a child the doctor cannot tell you that child is going to be healthy all of his or her life, they are going to be good in school and productive members of society. Can they?\r\n\r\nSo despite little idiosincracies (like Kassy absolutely disliking cats or Koda's inability to digest chicken(a main staple of dog food)) we have victoriously achieved not one or even two but three wonderful forever adoptions in our wonderful extended family! Thank you Potsdam Humane Society!!

    Pros

    Caring, knowledgable staff

    Cons

    Poor hours

  • 154. This is a caring, responsible shelter!

    by: eakinnally

I began volunteering here in early November, and I just love it. Everyone on staff is helpful, fun and friendly. We socialize and really care for the animals dropped off (sometimes literally!) at our door. We take in animals their owners can no longer keep or care for, for any reason: moving, allergies, etc. We also take in strays and lost pets, as well as animals who've been abandoned, irresponsibly bred, neglected, not trained then blamed for bad behavior, beaten, even shot. (Thanks again to that p.o.s. lack of humanity in/around Norfolk who shot a sweet, goofy and just beautiful two-year-old shepherd mix.) We do our utmost to fix what we can, then try to find them homes they'll never have to leave again. THAT is why we ask you about what pets you have, and what they're like. We want the best possible homes, not someone who treats animals as commodities or accessories. If the dog doesn't go with the drapes, and for some reason this has any impact on on your life, get new drapes! :) And if you have any room in your home and in your heart, come in and at least take a look at the animals we've got waiting for homes. You might meet someone who'd be perfect for you or someone you know.

    Pros

    the staff

    Cons

the need for shelters in the first place

  • 155. Not too shabby

    by: tiny12dancerr

My mother adopted a short haired orange kitten from there when I was young, he was the most adorable kitten and has grown up very well. His name is Butterscotch II (we lost the first one :[) I believe they deserve the make over because they are a no kill shelter and need room for the growing animal population and they treat their animals great.

    Pros

    No Kill!!!!

    Cons

Had bad staff in the past but now the staff is much better

  • 156. Couldn't ask for a better shelter

  • 157. I love Potsdam Animal Shelter!

I have adopted 2 cats and a dog from this shelter and have had a great experience every time. The staff is very helpful and really try to make the experience great. They are like a family there. My 8 year old daughter and I even spent a couple Saturdays volunteering there and walking some of the dogs and playing with the pups.

I have had two pets from this shelter. Allie was my parents dog that we got from the shelter and she was a great dog!! Such a lover...I also got my first cat (karma) from this shelter and would have gotten the second there but happened to stop by the massena shelter and couldn't leave without kc my second cat. I am thankful for having found such fabulous pets at the potsdam humane society

    Pros

    friendly staff

    Cons

sad to see the animals that are still there

  • 159. Great shelter!

    by: Jinxer124

I don't know why anyone has had a problem with this shelter. The staff is very knowledgable and they really care about the pets they have in the shelter. They are very thorough to make sure the pet you want is appropriate for your lifestyle and they are very accomodating to allow any previous pets you have meet a possible new-comer in your home. They are great at allowing you to foster in order to "test-run" a pet! I have not adopted personally from the shelter, but I have known many people who have adopted and I have been down there with my dog to do some test-runs with a few possible second dogs. (Unfortunately my dog is picky about who she likes!) Just because you get a pet from them and it only lives seven years doesn't mean it's the shelter's fault! They take great care to make sure all animals are healthy before adopting them out!

    Pros

Great advocates for dogs and cats in Potsdam and the surrounding area!

    Cons

Small! They need a new, larger building to house animals!

This is a great place to find a pet. The board is very diligent in its outreach to the community, and the staff works hard to help you find a good match between you and your prospective pet's personalities.

    Pros

Very committed, caring, knowledgeable pet advocates

    Cons

    Needs a makeover/facelift!

  • 162. Thank you PHS for giving me my life!

    by: tcjade

Three years ago I brought home 2 cats from the Potsdam Humane Society. I have never regretted that day. My babies are the best cats in the whole world (many claim that theirs' are, but seriously, mine are). They are healthy, big, loveable, and never had a runny nose in the 3 years I have had them. Unfortunately, this is not the case for cats I have seen come from other shelters. The shelter's policies are strict, but I completely understand that they do this so that they don't find their animals back out on the street. They made a direct call to my landlord to ensure that cats were in fact allowed in my apt. I can't say enough good things about this shelter. My kitties have saved me from many bouts of depression. Thank you Potsdam Humane Society, you gave me a wonderful life through my babies!!!

    Pros

Vigorous animal health screening, cleanliness, willing to take animals

    Cons

Dogs are loud and may scare the cats in the next room.

  • 163. Works hard

    by: hamv06

The Potsdam Humane Society workers and volunteers are working so hard to keep up with all the animals in their shelter. They do a great job taking care of them, and just need MORE space to help even more animals find great homes. I recently adopted a kitten from there that is an absolute sweetheart, couldn't ask for more. But there are still a ton of cats and kittens left in the shelter that broke my heart..I wish I could have taken them all home! If you are looking for a new pet, I urge you to visit the Potsdam shelter and take home a great one, you will not be disappointed!

    Pros

    great work with animals

    Cons

    need more space

  • 164. A happy adoption

    by: wehnauk

I recently went to the Potsdam shelter to adopt a dog and had a great experience with it. The staff was very informative and truthful about the behaviors of the dog. They even gave us a personality test to ensure that our activity level was a proper match with the dogs. The dog is now home with us and is doing amazing. And unlike typically shelter dogs she didn't have fleas or kennel cough like pets I have adopted from other shelters. They obviously go a step above to ensure they are in good health.

    Pros

Staff is extremely helpful and look out for the best interest of the animals.

    Cons

The facility is small so the dogs don't have much room to run.

  • 165. Potsdam's Great

    by: Putt932001

I took the 10 year old girl I babysit and all her friends to the Animal Shelter for her birthday, she really wanted to have a pet party and wanted to have it so instead of receiving birthday money from her friends, they would make donations to the Animal Shelter instead. The staff was very helpful and kind when we asked if we could play with the cats, and they even took a few dogs out for us to play with too. After looking at the puppies we donated the money to the shelter....The experience we had there was overwhelming and It was a really fun time. The girls all loved the dogs and the staff was very friendly. \n\nMy boyfriend and I are planning on adopting a dog at the end of the year and It will be from this shelter.

    Pros

    Cons

    Needs a new shelter!!!

  • 166. Time for a new facility!!

    by: jyette

We lost 2 dogs in previous years, one unexpectedly to Adison's Disease (sp?) and the following year had the second put down to end suffering of extreme arthritis/old age.\n\nAfter a year+ of begging from out 2 older children we began looking for a dog. We like larger breed dogs and we new it would be a while before we found one in a shelter. \n\nTo our surprise, the Potsdam Human Society had 2 Grate Dane mix puppies so I stopped by to take a look. I was told there many families interested in the 2 puppies, so I didn't get my hopes up - but I did plea my case stating we have experience with larger breed dogs (Mastiffs) and we have a large yard (1.5 acres).\n\nWe received a call 2 days after filling out the forms and I went the next day to pick up her up. The shelter name her Lola and the name seemed to stick. \n\nShe's about a year old now and while there has been some rough patch's with the training, all-in-all she is a great dog. \n\nOur adoption process was painless and they seemed interested in matching up the right dog with the right home. \n\n

    Pros

    Close to our home

    Cons

    Under funded, need more support

  • 171. Rufus

    by: Deloras

We got our dog, (Rufus) from the Potsdam Animal Shelter. Our friend Jan helped us with the adoption. He was 6 months old. They were very helpful and gave us a cage to use until he was adjusted to his new environment. He is a wonderful dog and I appreciate them matching us up with him. They deserve a new and updated facility.

I absolutely love the Potsdam Humane Society. My daughter began volunteering there about a year ago. Anne, the dog trainer has been so helpful in teaching my daughter how to work with animals. We have learned so much. My daughter looks forward to talking with Kathy when she gets there. Regina is super with the animals. She is so patient and always answers my daughters questions! In August I adopted a dog from there. They were so helpful! I have also enjoyed being a foster parent for them.

Potsdam Humane Society is the cleanest shelter I have ever been in. I just love how I could go into the cat area and play and check out the personality of the cats. My Kelsey picked me, I didn't pick her. She has been the most wonderful cat with a unique personality. Betwen myself and my daugher we have adopted three cats.\r\nThe staff were just wonderful for all. We continue to go in and visit with staff and all the animals that are waiting to be adopted. We also fully support all fund raisers also. \r\nThe whole community would so greatful for the make over. \r\n I love this Animal Shelter although Ive never adopted from there I have been there with other people who have adopted. Every time I see the donation bucket in stores I always donate even if its just a little bit. I love animals and the staff there is really nice. I just feel bad for the animals because the shelter is so small they can only fit little kennels so the animals cant even walk around in them. I hope everyone tries to earn as many points as possible for this shelter because they REALLY deserve it!

    Pros

    Staff is nice.

    Cons

Animals need more room to move around, and needs way more space inside.

We have adopted two family members from the Potsdam Shelter,a wonder dog named Molly, and our lovable kitty named Ms Roo.Our Molly had been at the shelter for most of her life when we found her.She had been adopted several times but returned to the shelter.I am still at a loss as to why anyone would return such a wonderful dog .When we visited the shelter we were allowed to spend as much time with Molly as we wanted. We were told we could use a quiet room they had and to take our time.We were given a brief history on Molly and advised of her likes (biscuits-yum!) and dislikes. It was a busy day but we were not rushed in any way. When we decided Molly was coming home with us the staff provided the paperwork and information regarding Molly's returns. We were treated with respect despite how busy they were.\n\nMy only disappointment with the shelter was paperwork which should have been provided to us wasn't .We discovered the reasons why Molly was returned so many times on our own not from the shelter staff.Molly was trained to do her business inside on a doggy pad and she is allergic to everything a dog can be allergic to.It would be easier to list what she isn't allergic to! Not that it would have changed our choice of this wonderful dog but if we had known ahead of time it could have saved us all the expense of finding out on our own,and spared Molly the discomfort .(The staff may not have known)\n\nAll in all the Potsdam Shelter takes great care of the animals ,is clean, and the staff sincere.

    Pros

very clean ,genuin concern for the animals

    Cons

    paperwork

    by: lacaamano

This shelter has made such improvements over the past couple of years. The staff are knowledgeable and incredibly caring - they are constantly taking animals home to foster - and go above and beyond to do all they can for every animal in their care. Recent programs created for this shelter including training programs, socializing, fostering, and education, have raised the level of volunteer knowledge and helped to create a good working team of staff and volunteers. With plans for expansion and major renovations, what can be done for the animals of this region will continue to improve and grow. Thanks to all the hard working people involved in this great organization!

    Pros

    Cons

facilities terribly outdated and in desperate need of improvement

I have fallen in love with several of the dogs that have come to the shelter, and as hard as it is to see them go, it's great to know they are going to a good home! (Odin, I love you!!!!!!)

I have been volunteering for almost a year at the shelter and I find it a great envirnment for both the animals and the visitors. The staff of this shelter is really in it with unconditional love and they do the best they can with the limited space and money to really run an shelter. This shelter is an amazing place and if I wasn't a college student and could have an pet of my own it would be the first place I would think to look. I have learned a lot from the staff on how to work with animal and it will greatly benefit my future exploration into Veterinary Technician School. Please vote!

I have been to the Potsdam Humane Society a number of times and have recently become a volunteer. In the first few days of "learning the ropes" the shelter staff were immensely helpful! They know what they are doing with care of the animals and they make sure that the animals' well being is always the primary concern. The animals are treated with respect and always kept in clean, dry areas. I have not adopted from this shelter (I'm a renter) but would do so if it was possible!

    Pros

    Cons

  • 195. need more room

    by: thorn106

I like the fact that animals can live out there lives there, and they do give discounts out in the local paper to find good homes. There just is not enough room the animals, if they could get the make over it would be great, they need it. I adopted a cat there last Feburary, and it took a while for him to get along with my two other girl cats, but everything is great, he is so cuddly and loves to play. When I picked him up they gave me food for him, all his shots were current and up to date, we was fixed, and the first office visit to the vet of my choice was free. We live in a small town and people donate what they can, we really need this.

    Pros

approve of the paper work in order to adopt, not everyone should be able to.

    Cons

not enough room, need more staff

I ride my bike by almost every morning when its not snowing for the past year, and often times many of the dogs are always barking in the early hours of the day, but this must be before someone has arrived to feed them, or something. I got my cat there, and the workers took him in and cared for him well. I have heard some great stories about their workers and vice versa.

    Pros

they work well with what materials and time they have

    Cons

the dont seem to have much time devoted, or materials for that matter

  • 199. Adopted Best Dog Ever

    by: nellielucas

About 6 years ago, me and my fiance' went into the shelter because we wanted a puppy. There was a litter of little lab/golden pups, and we found our perfect dog! Cooper is now going to be 6 years old and we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful sweet tempered dog! The people at the shelter were very friendly, at first they thought we were students and weren't going to allow us to adopt, but after we clarified, it was fine. People go out and spend tons of money on these purebred animals, and we paid about 40 bucks for our wonderful dog!! So thank you soo much!

    Pros

We adopted the sweetest dog ever!

    Cons

    A lot of paperwork

  • 200. Potsdam Humane Society working hard and deserving of a makeover

    by: aineelizabeth

The Staff at the Potsdam H maumane Society do an amazing job of caring for the animals mental and physical well being. They have a large, dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer base and stay current with the latest shelter practices. They serve a large portion of St.Lawrence Co. and inspite of the fact that the shelter building is small they have a remarkable adoption/save rate that rivals larger more sophisticated shelters in North America! They are deserving of a makeover so they can continue to do even more for the animal and pet owners in their area.

    Pros

Doing the very best that can be done considering the urgent need for a facility upgrade

    Cons

Need more room for special projects and a true iso ward

Potsdam Animal Shelter is a small, but efficient facility. Living here in the North Country, we need larger facilities to accommodate all of the unwanted dogs and cats. Unfortunately, many people still don't abide by leash laws, and dogs are allowed to run loose on the reservation. However, we do the best with what we have. I think they are doing a great job. Kudos!

    Pros

    Wonderful staff, excellent training program

    Cons

Too small for what is needed here in the North Country

As a staff member of course I think Potsdam is the best. We have a great Trainer and wonderful Office Manager. The animal caretakers are the back bone of the shelter, they are the best.

    All the wonderful animals

    Cons

    Much needed space

We got three kitties from the potsdam shelter. Our first two were brothers Shadow and Cinders. Cinders was killed while out hunting at night by a coyote so about a year later we went and got Shadow a buddy and adopted Scampers. The staff was really great. Our girls picked out Scampers and they were really great with them and let them look at all the cats they had and let them pick out the one they wanted. Scampers was hit by a car just last year while we were visiting my Mom. When we are ready for a new family member again I have no problem going to the Potsdam shelter again.

    by: tsdsbdkjd

I found the perfect dog for me here. 110 lbs. and very hyper. Staff had no problems letting me visit the dog before adoption. They answered all my question to the best of there ability. The dogs have a door in the back that allows them to enter, so as not to disrupt the cats or the activities at the front desk. Even when there was a error in the identity of the dog (female when it should of been male). The problem was fixed quickly, and the correct papers was sent the next day. I was also told that I could return the dog due to the error with no questions ask. This wasn't a problem for me and I was grateful for the opportunity. The only real problem for me is the hours. I would like to see longer hours even if its just for the summer.

    Pros

    Quick adoption

    Cons

    Parking and hours

  • 209. Pet Adoption

    by: hydee1127

Personally, I have only adopted from here once so far. My husband got a kitten for me, it was such a precious little thing. Sadly it did not survive for long, it became very sick and we only got to love it for about a week. We DO NOT blame the shelter, these things happen sometimes. The shelter, actually, was very sympathetic and offered to give us our money back. We did not accept the money, we simply wanted to inform them of the kitten's illness as to prevent any animals that may have been in contact from becoming ill. We still support and recommend the shelter, and when our children are old enough, we plan to adopt another pet from here.

    Pros

location, pet selection, friendly staff, clean well kept pets

    Cons

sad to see all those unadopted animals

    by: kathybrainard

As a staff member - office manager - I am a little biased. I came to work here May 2007 - It is by far one of the nicest rural shelters I have ever been in. We have outgrown our building and need to expand - so many people are trying to help us! It is a great place to be!

    Pros

Caring staff - Great dog training program

    Cons

The only shelter in St Lawrence county that accepts from the WHOLE county

    by: ninjapup

I visited the shelter last week with a friend who was looking to adopt a kitten. The staff was friendly and we were able to spend time with the available kittens to select the one that she wanted. She picked a little sweetie that was the last of his litter, it's good to know he has a good home now. For the adoption fee ($50 I think) the kitten has all it's shots and is already neutered, you really can't go wrong there. We did have to pay an extra $5 for a cardboard carrier to take him home, but it was well worth the money, he was a squirmy little fella. You could save the $5 by bringing your own carrier.\nThe whole process was quick and painless, I'd certainly recommend this shelter to anyone. There are still lots of pets, especially older cats and dogs waiting for a nice warm home this Christmas, stop down and see which one is right for you.

    Pros

    Quick, easy adoption

    Cons

    none

The Postdam Human Society Animal Shelter is a great place. They are very caring about the animals and keep the animals in healthy conditions. they adopt out a lot of animals to local people, but they are quite choosy as to who can adopt. This is a college town, so it is important to make sure that the students who adopt really will keep the animals and want them.\r\n\r\nI have found unwanted animals on my property and turned into the local animal control, which then takes them to the Humane Society. I have watched as these animals were neutered or spayed, quarantined, checked for diseases and found homes.\r\n\r\nThey are now expanding to serve the community better.

    Pros

    great friendly staff

    Cons

    limited parking at the moment
