  • 1. Great place!

    by: brigantine

My sister adopted a dog from them a year ago and loved them so I went there last week. I had a great experience and now have a wonderful new adition to the family.

    Pros

    Great friendly staff.

    Cons

    Building is small and old.

  • 2. Long Overdue Makeover needed!

    by: jeepinva

I think this shelter deserves this makeover! They work so hard to keep the dogs & cats clean & fed. Its unfortunate that they are so understaffed and overpopulated with animals. It's the animals that really suffer. I adopted our dog from there about 7 years ago. She's a great pooch and I'm currently trying to adopt another one, Ali. He's a great big dog. My husband really likes him a lot. I'm hesitant a little, due to his size and that he was a stray. Not sure how, at 2 yrs old - he would train. When we decided to adopt again, we went to Portsmouth Humane first. They need more people to come see them first. Those dogs need adopting and loving families. Please vote for them!

    Pros

    Staff willingness to help

    Cons

    Understaffed

  • 3. love them

    by: heartmypeanut

The thing I love the most about Portsmouth Humane Society is how much they genuinely love the animals they help rescue. They are so friendly and just love the animals and people who rescue them... I could go on for hours in reference to how helpful and kind they are. I rescued my baby from them and have had numerous friends visit the shelter when looking for a new pet based on my reference. Love the shelter!!!

  • 4. Job well done!

    by: firefytr360

Kudos for all that the staff does with the little resources that you have. This is a wonderful shelter with many great animals. I wish I had room in my home, to take some more cats home.

    Pros

    Hard working and dedicated staff

    Cons

    None

  • 5. What a great group of people

    by: Habibsmistress

What a great group of people! Very harworking under less than ideal conditions. I am so grateful for the work that they do - and I cannot.

    Cons

  • 6. PHS staff are EXCEPTIONAL!

    by: dixetruckr

I volunteer with PHS not because it is the closest shelter to me (it is definitely not)- I volunteer with them because I want to work with team who knows how to partner with the community and will make a difference in the lives of pets! The level of caring runs deep at PHS. At any time, one can walk into the shelter and ask any staff member any pets name and story- and they will know it! Shelters are typically dank, smelly jailhouses for animals -not pets. How does a prospective family know if the pet cowering in the kennel or barking constantly is going to make a good fit? They don't. That is the difference the staff at PHS make when folks enter their shelter- education. I want to support a group that shares my passion for pet welfare advocacy, understands the huge need for community education and makes it a huge part of its mission. As a foster mom, I have fostered many cats/ kittens over the years, and have started fostering dogs recently with PHS. I feel supported by the staff to meet the foster pets physical needs and they are always willing to help guide me to during the socialization process. If I ever win a lottery, I would build the best shelter ever for PHS so that they could expand and continue the amazing work they do. The lottery winnings would also fund increase in salaries- these folks work hard- for the pets- definitely not for the money! If anyone needs/ deserves a million $$ bonus it's these folks (Just what do those CEO's actually do???). So, folks, shop around, do research online- like you would to buy a car, a house, or any other major investment. Besides, a pet will hold its value like no other commodity (priceless), give unconditional love (at a level difficult to find humans!), costs less to maintain than any car, home, or teenager (ha ha!). Go visit Portsmouth Humane Society- and see for yourself!!

    Pros

entire staff know each pet like family, true advocates for pet welfare, approach is to educate the community-not lecture them on the err of their ways

    Cons

They need a new building!! They spend countless hours working to maintain the best conditions for all the pets, a building makeover would allow basic maintenance time to decrease and more time for working with animals, community education, adoption efforts!!

  • 7. I love these people!

    by: bbkipp

My husband and I love to visit. We can't take anymore animals home but we love to spend time giving the animals there some well deserved love. The staff do not necessarily come right out and talk to you but that to me is a good sign. They are animal people, not people people :) They know the personality of almost every animal in there and they seem to love them as their own. They are a a no-kill shelter and they do not turn animals away. PLEASE go resucue one of the babies at PHS!

    Pros

    No-kill

    Cons

    OVERCROWDED :(

  • 8. They Do Great Work With Very Little

    by: cmvmom

The staff at this shelter are top-notch. My daughter adopted a great dog there last year and now volunteers there. She can't say enough nice things about the staff and her fellow volunteers. When I retire next year, she is going to help me pick out the perfect canine companion from the shelter. I am really looking forward to that.

    Pros

    Caring, Knowledgable

    Cons

    Old, Dilapidated Building

  • 9. Nothing but rave reviews

    by: tnee0001

I fostered 3 cats from here last year and would adopt in a minute if I didn't already have others now. The staff takes excellent care of the animals and knows their personalities. Not everyone hits it off with every pet- they all have their quirks just like people. I'm amazed by just how much they do with such little space. The cats I took in were very socialized and friendly and all got along- even though 2 were taken in as strays. This is a huge indicator of the care they received at the shelter even though they were there for months. They are also trasitioning (or have already done so) which I think is wonderful. I don't think I could donate or enter a shelter knowing that some of the domesticated adoptable healthy pets could be euthanised solely because their time was up. They really need a new building and more space to keep up their quality of care.

    Pros

Very attentive to animals, try hard to match an owner to the right pet,

    Cons

    old building...need more space

  • 10. A shelter full of love....

    Cons

  • 11. They were glad to help me!

    by: HankCharley

I do not live in P-town anymore but when I did, the shelter staff could not have been more helpful when our beloved Peke wondered off one evening. We roamed the streets in the rain looking for her until about 1:00 AM with no luck. The next day we called PHS to ask if anyone had turned in or reported finding our dog. No one had but they took our info and didn't mind me calling back almost every hour to check again. Thankfully for us, a kind hearted lady found our dog wandering the rain and took her home. She called PHS to report finding a dog and they put us in contact with her. What a blessing they were! They help more than just the poor souls that wind up in the shelter- they also look out for those who never come through their doors.

    Pros

    compassionate & level headed

    Cons

    can't think of any

  • 12. Compassion....

    by: shannalee80

I got my cat here about 2 weeks and the staff made it very easy. They are very knowledgable. The shelter does so much with what little (and animal demands) that they have. I will get my next cat or dog here!

    Pros

    Cons

  • 17. PHS

    by: riverwolf47

I adopted my Persephone from Portsmouth Humane Society about 4 years ago. I had just lost my Charlie boy a couple months before to kidney failure and I was heart broken. The people at the shelter listened and understood that I did not want to replace Charlie but give another feline friend a forever home. In walked Persephone (they called her Daisy Mae)and she has been a Diva! :) The people from PHS will never know how much they helped me back then and how much of a joy they have brought into my life. I volunteer up at PHS now and I have seen how much they truly care for the animals! They try to make sure that they fit the right animal with the right family and they do a GREAT job! They want to make sure it is going to be a forever home and are there for the adopters even after they take their new furbabies home. And yes I have even seen a tear or two when some of the furbabies go home. Not bad tears but tears of joy you can not help but get attached sometimes. Plus that shows just how much they really do care! Maybe not to some but to someone that has been rescuing dogs for as long as I have with other rescues it show alot! I really hope that PHS wins the make over! They would make great use of the new and improved surrounds. Plus I know that their heart would burst with joy and thankfulness to know how much more and better they could help the animals!!!!

    Pros

Loving People and Staff that really care about the animals!

    Cons

    Is needs a makeover

  • 18. The Little White Building

    by: Shortysue

I've lived in Portsmouth most my life and to be honest I've always hated going to the little white building known as the Humane Society. You see it breaks my heart to see all the animals in the cages and I break down and cry. Three years ago I went to the Chesapeake shelter and got a little puppy. Three months later I went to the Portsmouth Shelter and got my second puppy to be his buddy. I think the staff is wonderful and want them to know that they are number one in my book. I wish everyone felt the same as those that work there. I would recomend for anyone looking for a great pet to visit the Little White Building on Frederick Blvd called Portsmouth Humane Society. Keep up the good work! Connie G.

    Pros

    Wonderful Staff

    Cons

    Need more space

    by: JulieandSteve

  • 22. PHS

    by: sadegiro

The staff are good to the animals, which you can tell are loved. They need more space to live and be cared for. The building is older and made of cinder blocks, the cats are in cages and some have multiple cats in cages due to tight quarters. The animals have food, water, litter boxes were clean and the dogs were being taken outside each time we were there.

    Pros

They care for the animals, care for them the best they can with the ammenities they have

    Cons

older building, old equipment, tight space

  • 23. PHS needs to win!

  • 24. HELPED My Kitty When I Could Not!

    by: got2bskilled

I took my beloved kitty to the vet several weeks ago. I spent all my money just to discover that he was going to die. He was in serious pain. I made the tough decision to put him down, but the vet wanted another $170 which I did not have. I felt so helpless and terrified to see him in so much distress. If it was not for the Portsmouth Humane Society, I would have had no where to turn when my dear pet was suffering. I called Portsmouth, and the staff was extremely sympathetic to our painful situation. A kind woman on the staff called in a special medical person (on their day off) to promptly come in and euthanize my suffering friend. In the matter of an hour, they were ready, kind, and prepared to comfort my cats pain and mine. They will never understand how much their compassion meant to me. Portsmouth Humane Society is not only there for the animals in need, but is there for the community in need too. Respectfully, Manders's Mommy

    Pros

These people really care for every pet!

    Cons

Not enough space or equiptment to handle all the animials.

  • 26. New to PHS

    by: mreeves74

We visited the Portsmouth Humane Society for the first time last weekend. We were there to make a donation of some toys, collars and tiny dog sweaters. We filled out paper work that day to become volunteers. We were thrilled to see how clean the cages were, and especially how well cared for the cats were. They had a wonderful assortment of toys, beds and blankets. We re looking forward to doing what we can to volunteer and help out this shelter and the dogs and cats (and rabbit) who are currently calling PHS "home."

    Pros

Immense toys and comfort in cat cages

    Cons

    Not enough funding

  • 27. People at Portsmouth Humane Society

    by: rj02008

This is a loving group of staff and volunteers. The animals though in a crowded space are clean and well fed, walked and loved. My hats off to the people that work with the cats, dogs and other animals.

    Pros

The people here love these animals, and love for anyone to come and be with the animals

    Cons

The building is very small and cramped, but they do the best with what they have

  • 28. CARING STAFF

    by: dizziesam

MY FUR DAUGHTER (NICCIBLUE) WAS BROUGHT TO THIS SHELTER AND LATER SENT TO PETSMART WHERE WE ADOPTED EACH OTHER. WE HAVE SENT THEM TREATS FOR THE STAFF AND TREATS FOR THE FUR BABIES. ALWAYS HAPPY TO SEE SOMEONE COME IN THE DOOR. THEY ALWAYS INSIST ON SENDING A THANK YOU NOTE (WHICH IS NOT NECESSARY FOR ME) BUT I GET ONE ANYWAY. I AM MORE AWARE OF THE SHELTER SINCE MY DAUGHTER CAME FROM THERE. THEY DO THE BEST WITH WHAT THEY HAVE. EVEN WASHING BEDS AND HANGING THEM ON THE LINES TO DRY (IT ALWAYS BRINGS A TEAR TO MY EYE. I LOVE THEM.

    Pros

ALWAYS COURTEOUS WHEN I HAVE VISITED

    Cons

    DO NOT HAVE ANY NEGATIVES

  • 29. PHS is amazing

    by: Boosure16

I love dogs and not having one here was killing me so I went and visited some local shelters. I fell in love with PHS and their staff. From the time I stepped, a staff member was helping me pick my perfect pet. I found my beautiful pit, Turbo, and couldn't be happier. This is such a great place and they deserve a better facility.

    Pros

They know their stuff, are compassionate, and really care about you and your adopted pet.

    Cons

    NONE

This shelter has been around for many years, it badly needs a makeover. They always take in any and all animals regardless of space. People even dump their animals there overnight!! Just leave them out in the cold, and Portsmouth humane Society still takes them in. If it wasnt for this shelter where would our animals here in portsmouth be? Please help. They are always in need of food, blankets, treats etc. for the animals. Please help our shelter!

    Pros

Friendly staff, always willing to offer advice and help

    Cons

This shelter is in bad need of a makeover!!, It's needs more space

  • 31. A Helpful Hand

    by: lilpxe

It was the week before Thanksgiving when we lost our baby, Emmy. We had a terrrible windstorm the night before and unbenounced to us part of our backyard fence blew down, and our dog, Emmy, got loose. We searched our neighborhood for hours and hours, and some of our neighbors, whom we never met, joined in on our search. I had called the Humane Society, the police, etc. to put out an alert for Emmy and put out flyers all over our neighborhood. It took three days, and the Humane Society of Portsmouth, VA keeping in touch, and we finally found her. The helpful and compassiate nature with which the HS Of Portsmouth showed us and our dog will NEVER be forgotten. They were great in letting us use their billboard to put flyers up and didn't mind my many calls to see if there were any updates. On the third day, a friendly voice from the HS called and said we think we found your Emmy. She put me in touch with the good samaritan that found our baby, and it turned out to be her. It was the best Thanksgiving. We truly had something to be grateful for, the person who saved our dog, Debra Waller of Norfolk, VA, and the Portsmouth Humane Society for not forgetting about us and our baby so we could truly celebrate what Thanksgiving is really about ... being Thankful for the kindness of strangers and the compassion of the human spirit. Sincerely, Melanie and Jimmie Bunch of Shea Terrace area, Portsmouth, VA

    Pros

The staff was very helpful and compassionate

    Cons

None that I can think of

  • 32. Great Place!

    by: chuckchad

Very impressed with staff but a "make over" of the facility is BADLY needed!

    Pros

    Excellent staff

    Cons

    Need a better building

  • 33. Our Baby

    by: cambrose2

We adopted our baby from PHS about seven years ago and she is the best dog we could of asked for. I always try to support my community and I think that PHS is doing a fantastic job of becoming the best in the area. Whenit is time to adopt another dog we will go to PHS.

    Pros

    Great people

    Cons

Facility is too old and is in need of a lot of work.

  • 34. TOOLS NEEDED

    by: JEANNEJEANNE

THE FOLKS AT THIS SHELTER DO WHAT THEY CAN AND ARE VERY HELPFUL. CONSIDERING WHAT THEY HAVE IN THE WAY OF A BUILDING, SUPPLIES, ETC THE ANIMALS ARE TAKEN CARE OF PRETTY WELL. THERE IS SO MUCH POTENTIAL FOR THIS TO BE A BETTER PLACE! WITH AN APPEALING BUILDING, OUTSIDE APPEARANCE AND A USER FRIENDLY INSIDE THE PETS WILL HAVE A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE AND INCREASE OF ADOPTIONS WILL SOAR. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!

    Pros

THE VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF DO THE BEST THEY CAN BUT THE CONDITIONS AT THIS SHELTER NEED TO BE IMPROVED WITH A MAKEOVER.

    Cons

THE CARING OF THE ANIMALS COULD BE IMPROVED DRAMATICALLY WITH A BUILDING MAKEOVER AND THE TOOLS TO DO THE JOB. PEOPLE GET FRUSTRATED, DISAPPOINTED AND TIRED OF THE DRUDGERY OF CLEANING, FEEDING,EXERCISING, CARING FOR THE POOR ANIMALS. WHEN A SHELTER LOOKS LIKE THIS IT NEEDS HELP WHICH BENEFITS THE ANIMALS IN BEING MORE APPEALING.

  • 35. Adopting Tucker

    by: Morgan5721

My experience with adopting my dog was pretty good, considering the shelter's small staff and old facility. I love my dog and he has been a healthy and fun addition to the rest of my minagerie. I have 5 cats, 2 dogs, koi in the back yard and a parakete that was dropped on me by an employee. Everyone knows what a sucker I am for creatures. I felt like I was with kindred spirits at the Portsmouth Humane Society. I wish I could do more to help them.

    Pros

All staff seemed genuinely concerned for the wellfare of the animals, very hard workers, the animals were well taken care of

    Cons

the facility is in dire need of updating. the areas are packed with animals, as they are a no-kill shelter, and people drop off animals whether they have room or not. the shelter takes the animals in even though they can't afford them or have enough room for them

  • 36. adoption

    by: RHONDAF1972

The Portsmouth SPCA is a place for unwanted animals to be until their "new" family comes along. Its to bad they cant be in a place that has better areas for them to chill out and play in until the have reached their new family. They deserve this make over!!!

    Pros

    help animals find great homes

    Cons

the animals need better areas until they are in their new homes

  • 37. This shelter needs help!

    by: kb7176

The Portsmouth facility is lacking in so many ways. They have only one bathroom that they much use to clean out litter boxes etc. The air conditioning and heat are totally unacceptable. They are frequently not working and the duct work is from an old McDonalds that is falling apart. The staff is constantly trying to provide the best possible conditions for the animals however they really need help. The dedicated people at the shelter are wonderful and try to keep a positive attitude regardless of the conditions and are so deserving of the help that winning this makeover would give them. I can't think of a better candidate for a make over than this facility.

    Pros

Staff is great and tries very hard

    Cons

This facility is old and has serious problems

  • 38. Review Jan '09

    by: BeagleCJ

I had a good experience with Portsmouth Humane Society when I had my dog spayed there. I noticed the facility was small and in need of upgrading. I hope they are able to raise enough funds to serve the community even better.

    Pros

Provides low cost spay and neutering service

    Cons

    Facility is small

  • 39. Finally a no-kill shelter!

    by: cavara

This shelter really needs help! The staff is great and caring, and does wonders with what little resources they have to work with. The rating I gave them for messiness is not the fault of the staff, but rather because there is no room for them to properly do their very important work. The staff and furry residents are stuffed into a too small and very outdated facility. They need a great deal of help from everyone in order to maintain their NO-KILL status.

    Pros

Very friendly, caring, helpful staff. And no-kill!

    Cons

Facility is far too small and worn out to properly care for it's current and future residents.

I have been there and believe the staff there is very dedicated to what they do and there love for the animals is like none Ive ever seen, they way they work with the animals nad can turn an aggresive one into the most loving is impressive, the only thing is the amount of space they have is very minimum and hopefully soon that can be rectified, I can truly say they deserve a thumbs up for their hard work and dedication to the animals.

I admire and respect all the employees at the Portsmouth Humane Society. I can't imagine performing any of the tasks they do. Pros

    Cons

Environment..but no shelter has a great environment.

  • 48. Compassionate care-givers

    by: amysinva

In Dec. 2007, we adopted two dogs from Portsmouth Humane. One dog, in spite of being heart worm positive, was spared by the staff because they all saw his wonderful personality. They believed that someday, someone would adopt this dog. Today, that dog is 100% healthy, and part of our family. Thank you, Portsmouth Humane!

    Pros

    caring staff

    Cons

    facility in need of updating/expansion

    Pros

They will do what is needed and reach out to help any animal

    Cons

need more funds to help more animals

  • 50. Hard working

    by: jluffman

The Portsmouth Humane Society does an excellent job considering the space they have and the funding they receive from the City of Portsmouth. Other than the city's funding, they survive totally on donations from caring people in the community.\r\n\r\nBeing in a military area, they often receive abandoned pets as military people leave the area. This places an extra burden on them. A slow economy, as you know, also brings an increase in animals at shelters.\r\n\r\nThe shelter was not well managed for many years, and now they have a great staff and a great board of directors that are working hard to improve the quality of care and the quality of the conditions for the animals. They are doing the best they can. A makeover would not only be a boost for homeless animal care in Portsmouth, it would raise the level of the charity's reputation and image in the community. They are so deserving of a makeover.

  • 52. "Never have so few done so much for so many!"

    by: BeckyBarclay

This amazing shelter has made tremendous strides in the past six months, achieving milestones in advance of proposed dates while struggling with an ageing and out-of-date facility and the day-to-day challenges of providing for homeless pets. We have embarked on a plan to acquire land and build a new, state-of-the-art shelter that is truly animal- and people friendly and will serve as a model for what a diverse group of animal lovers can do when they set their minds and hearts to make life better for innocent and completely dependent creatures.\r\n\r\nOur Executive Director has focused on increasing fostering and adoptions, "walking the talk" when it comes to spay-neuter (our animals are altered before they leave for new forever homes), and increasing public awareness of the needs we meet and the services we provide. It's not an easy task for anyone who serves as an employee or a volunteer, but we have made such incredible strides in a short time. Hang in there and let's win this makeover!

    Pros

    Incredibly hard-working and dedicated staff

    Cons

Ageing facility in great need of updating

  • 53. Portsmouth's Little Shelter

    by: vmarsh

The Portsmouth Humane Society is a small, underfunded shelter that does its best to take care of the animals with the circumstances they're given. They do a great job at getting the word out and getting the community involved, using our local news station and holding adoption events at a local petstore. Every employee and volunteer that I've come in contact with has been very helpful. They truley are concerned about each animal's welfare.

    Pros

    Friendly workers

    Cons

    Small facility

  • 54. Thanks for all that you do

This shelter is the best I have ever experienced. They treat the animals with such care and generasity. Thank you Portsmouth Humane Society for all that you do.

    Pros

    the staff was excellent

    Cons

all the animals still in the shelter

  • 55. Just adopted Florida

    by: JLStanley

The Portsmouth Humane Society is an excellent place to go. It is one of those cases where you can not judge a book by its cover. I just adopted Florida from PHS and she is such a wonderful dog. I fell in love with her from the moment I saw her. PHS has everything going for them, except for a new building. They are such wonderful people. They help animals on a daily basis. They just need some help cleaning up a bit.

    Pros

they are excellant, helped me in every way possible

    Cons

they just need a new place to work

  • 56. Thanks to the staff at Portsmouth Humane

    by: scmar65

I am so grateful to all of the staff at this shelter for seeing the potential of my wonderful new 4-legged family member, Lexie (aka Athena), and holding her there for 5 1/2 months till I found her. She is a sweet, loving, loyal and oh, so willing to please Pit Bull. I am so glad that there are shelters like this one that judge each dog as an individual and ignore supposed breed reputations. I have only had her a week and already I can't imagine my life without her. She is presently lying under my desk at work, where she is a welcome addition to our studio. Thanks again, PHS and know that she is well-loved. Keep up the great work.

    Pros

    Caring Staff and Volunteers

    Cons

    Tiny, Crowded Reception Area

  • 57. Talking to 'babies'

    by: Kathy125

I have adopted several pets from Portsmouth Humane, have provided foster care to kittens, and donate papers and cans. The staff's focus is on the companion animals in their care. Staff are gentle and truly care about each one. This is evident when I go and 'talk to the babies' - walking through and visiting and talking to them - mostly the cats. It's the best stress management anyone can find!

    Pros

    caring staff, knowledgeable

    Cons

    need more space!

  • 58. Wonderful

    by: marshallfamily29

Wonderful place. Even though the facility seems small and the landscaping is a mess the animals and stuff make this the place that I would want to adopt from.

    Cons

    None

  • 59. Where I work

    by: Desiredust

Portsmouth Humane Society is by far the best job that I have ever had, that is saying a lot because I working with fecal matter and dog food all day. I love the animals and the people that I work with are great! I have never met a bigger bunch of animal lovers.\n\nIts sad that PHS has to do the great things that they are doing out of the tiny building they are in. When people come in and see such a small shelter it turns them away. It makes the animals look like they are living in horrible conditions. And people; therefore, do not want them. The kennels and it makes the animals go crazy. A lot of times we have to turn animals away because we have so many. It's really sad.\n\nI have so many ideas to make this a great shelter, but it all comes down to location and building. \n\nI would love to see this shelter get a million dollar makeover. It would change the world for all of their animals!

    Pros

    Great, hardworking and dedicated staff

    Cons

Small, building layout is sadly horrible

  • 60. What Compassion Can Achieve...

    by: Kitsune

I started volunteering at the Portsmouth Humane Society when I moved back to Portsmouth a year & a half ago. (I never imagined the first pets I'd adopt would be cats, but they are a constant delight!) The changes since then have been phenomenal. The current staff and volunteers are dedicated to putting the animals first, and our great managers, Tereza & Michael, work hard to increase awareness, funds, and community involvement. They liaise with breed rescues, other shelters, and trainers to maximize resources and help the animals get adopted.\n\nWhat their compassion and enthusiasm can't bring about is new facilities. The staff break room does triple duty as vaccination space and pet/visitor interaction room. We have one office, one bathroom, a closet with a sink for washing dishes and another with a small tub for grooming animals. \n\nThey are working hard to be a "no-kill" shelter, which means they rarely have an empty kennel and are hard-pressed to help owners who need to surrender a pet. \n\nWe are the contracted Animal Control facility for the city as well as a private shelter. However, Portsmouth is facing its own budget crisis, which means there are no extra funds to allot for shelter improvements; meanwhile we receive many strays, especially pit bull mixes. \n\nThese circumstances make the shelter's work all the more impressive; in the face of daily challenges, everyone continues working hard to keep all the homeless pets in their care healthy and happy until their forever family comes along.

    Pros

Caring staff who know the animals & work hard to find them the right home

    Cons

    Outdated facility, insufficient space

  • 61. Great staff at Portsmouth Humane Society!

    by: roz6

I can honestly say that the staff at the Portsmouth Humane Society has made all the difference for me. I have visited the shelter in response to their appeals to the public through the news media. They are extremely concerned about\r\nthe animals in their care and go the extra mile to \r\nfind the owner that will meet the needs of the animals. Many of the staff stay after hours to \r\nclean and take care of the animals and process the high volume of administrative work. Portsmouth could use this makeover and is counting on your help! \r\n\r\nThank you for the opportunity to respond!

    Pros

    professional and caring staff

    Cons

staff needs an enlarged and state of the art shelter to care for more animals

  • 62. Thanks Portsmouth Humane!

    by: glennsuokas

Here's my dog Kelso. He was found as a stray animal about 6 months ago. Although some might have deemed him as "damaged goods" (advanced heartworm disease), the folks at PHS took him in with the belief that every animal deserves a chance to find a home. Now he shares my home with 5 cats and his brother "Phillip" a Walker Hound and another PHS alumnus. I wasn't looking for another dog, but now I couldn't imagine our home without Kelso the Clown. (P.S. Don't tell him he has heartworms...you would never know it by the way he runs around the yard!)

    Pros

Best Staff You Will Ever Meet!

    Cons

It's a tiny cramped building...they deserve so much more.

  • 64. Great staff need new facility

    by: Flutterbyfairy

PHS is a loving facility that is being hampered by the outdated building and ammenidies. They do their best with what they have and no matter what caring for the animals comes first. Their wonderful staff and volunteers could do so much more for the animals of Portsmouth if they got a make over.

    Pros

    Very Caring Staff

    Cons

Facility Needs a lot of updating

  • 67. A Terrific Experience

    by: depdog

In April we apopted a wonderful little dog from PHS. It was love at first sight. I think he picked us instead of the other way around. I found the staff caring and helpful. They are dedicated to the welfare of the animals and making the stay at the shelter as happy and fun as possible. They work extremely hard to find good homes for all. They also work hard and getting sick animals healthy and adoptable. \r\nInspite of the small size of the shelter I was truely impressed. So much so, I became a volunteer. Thank you Portsmouth Humane for my terriffic Hooper.

    Pros

Dedicated and Caring staff, Clean kennels and cages
