  • 1. WHAT I THINK...

    by: klove939

I AM A VOLUNTEER AT THIS HUMANE SOCIETY, WHICH IS WHERE I ADOPTED MY RECENT DOG AT. I WILL GO UP AND MAKE WONDERFUL MEMORIES WITH THE DOGS. FRIENDSHIPS THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME. THERE IS NO OTHER PLACE I WOULD RATHER WORK. AND I AM PLEASED TO FIND OUT THAT WE ARE GETTING A BUILDING BEING BUILT TO WHERE THE DOGS WILL BE ABLE TO STAY WARM AND DRY DURING THE RAIN AND SNOW. I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THE BUILDING IS BUILT. THEN THE ANIMALS CAN GET OUT OF THE SHELTER THEY STAY UNDER.

    Pros

CAN FIND THE LOVE FROM A DOG

    Cons

    DOGS GET LOOSE THERE EASILY

  • 2. Great Job!!!

    by: nboron

I think Jamie is doing a great job for what she has to work with. Hopefully we can all come together to get this makeover for Pleasants County. Keep up the good work everyone working at the shelter and keep up the great advertising on the net Jamie! Rather see the dog go to a good home than the alternative!!

    Pros

    Lot of dedication from staff

    Cons

    Not enough room

  • 3. We need help!

    by: wvredneckgirl25

I have been to the shelter several times. They have alot of great dogs up there. That are so loving and fun. They need alot more people in the community to help or volunteer. It has come a long ways since Jamie has been there but it needs a better place for the dogs to stay in. Which Jamie has been working hard to get it. It is so underfunded. Anytime I've went up there Jamie has been there and been very polite to me and my friends. She is always thinking of the dogs.

    Pros

They have alot of great dogs and are very nice

    Cons

They need a nicer shelter for them

  • 4. Dog Shelter

    by: cecilcs

My daughter runs the humane societys dog shelter. Plus does all the animal calls for cruelty or strays. She has put countless hour into this shelter. With little to no help. The county does help fund them but its not even enough to support the shelters common bills let alone everything else thats needed. Its always touch and go when it comes to money. There are lots of shelters out there that needs the money more, but I hope the people in this comunity steps up and gives it all they got to get in the top 20.

    Pros

    There of the animals.

    Cons

    Poorly Funded.

    by: pslider

This shelter is a great help to the animals in the area, but has very limited help, money, supplies and resources. The volunteers they do have, do a great job using what they have.

    Pros

    Friendly staff

    Cons

    limited resources

  • 7. Limited community support

    by: fastcars

Limited facilities, limited funding, limited volunteers, limited employees but they make the best with what they have. The humane society members and volunteers are dedicated and care about the animals.

    Cons

    Have little to work with

  • 13. I love this place

    by: gizmo

I love this place because we have a lot of people that work there. Most of them are kids. Our local torch club goes to the shelter a lot. Most of the reason why I like our shelter is because people put a lot of work into it to maintain it.

    Pros

We provide a home for abandoned dogs that need water, food, and shelter.

    Cons

Some of our dogs have died.

  • 14. Great Group

    by: kilmerj

I just want to applaud Debi and her group of kids from the Boys and Girl club. They volunteer there time to keep the shelter clean. They walk the animals and show them love. They are a caring, dedicated group of people. They do their best to keep it warm and safe for the animals with no support from the community. The shelter is outside and has had problems with theft. I feel because of there hardwork and dedication they deserve a little help. If it were'nt for this group there would be no shelter for these lost and lonely pets.

    Pros

They have a great group of people taking care of the shelter.

    Cons

Its outside, people break in and steal the animals. No financial support

  • 15. great place

    Pros

well maintain for what they have

    Cons

    no funding

  • 16. Animal Control Officer opinion

    by: jamiepchs

As the Animal Control Officer of Pleasants County and the manager of the dog shelter. I feel this shelter is one of the best for what there is to work with. I am very proud of what has been acompleshed in my 5 years. We have managed to save over 900 hundred dogs since I started in 2002. Sadly enough there have been around 200 euthanized. 75% of those are because of aggression and sickness, 25% is for room. The down fall is the place is in desperate need of remodleing. The kennels are falling apart. The fencing needs replaced, doors are falling off. There is no quarenteen area for the adult dogs, so illness can spread rather easy. There is such an easy access that anyone can come and go, taking what ever they want, or dumping what ever they want. This last one can hit the shelter hard if someone dumps a sick animal. (known from experance) Rodents have moved in under the concrete, causing it to move, which in turn has caused more damage to the fencing. The shelter is aloud to mantain 40 animals at one time, but there is only enough kennels to house 28 adult dogs. So they have to be doubled up. There are no side walks around the kennels so the adopters have to walk in the gravel and mud. There is a roof over them, but at this point there are no walls. The Humane Society has finally made it to were they can pay the bills and suport themselves, but to be able to upgade the shelter is out of our hands. We work very hard planning fundraisers and such but that money goes into paying the bills. It would be so nice to have help getting this shelter upgraded. With a new apperance the place will just look so much better, and hopefully bring in more adoptions and volunteers.

    Pros

    Low euthanize/ high adoptions

    Cons

    Shelter Falling apart

  • 17. Great Dogs!

    by: bosoxbaby

We have volunteered at this shelter for three years now. They have a wonderful group of dogs up there for the low cost of a $20.00 adoption fee. The Humane Officer works her butt off trying to keep the kennels clean, dogs fed & watered, pick up strays, deal with the public and the BS of minimum support from the community and the ignorance of people dumping off their animals. Dogs have been stolen from the kennels. The conditions are not the best there, but the dogs are taken care of. Our middle and high school volunteers have worked their butts off the last three years walking the dogs, cleaning kennels, trying to get the dogs adopted by making posters, placing donation jars, walking the dogs in the annual Christmas parades. They get attached to them. The officer does her best to keep the dogs as long as possible. More community support, donations and spay and neutering would be a great help. Stop spending hundreds/thousands on dogs, when you can get the greatest dog at your local shelter. These dogs are loving animals. We need more volunteers at our shelter. We are the only ones... The officer can't do it alone!! One day a month would be a big help.

    Pros

    Great Dogs

    Cons

    Limited Funding/Lack of Volunteers

  • 18. love this shelter

    by: johnclinster13

I think it is great that it they do this just for the respect of the animals. Another thing I think is great is they help ''fix'' the dogs with all of thier phisical problems. These things include nuetering, flea curing, tick removing, and washing them. All toghether they are a great non-profitable organization.

    Pros

    They are reliable.

    Cons

There really nothing bad about it.

  • 21. Choose a Shelter Dog

    by: Fifaphile

This is a great service for lost and abandoned dogs in our community. It, unfortunately, is underfunded by the county commission and people expect the Humane Officer to "make do". She does the best she can under the circumstances and keeps the best interest of the dogs at heart. Volunteers are needed and welcome. Kids from the local Torch Club do a great job cleaning and feeding and giving the dogs some quality time, keeping them well socialized for adoption. Check out the website at http://www.pchs.us/ to see some of the great dogs.

    Pros

Always a great selection of pets

    Cons

Don't always know what puppies are there
