  • 1. Great for a chain store!

    by: djg113

If you're going to shop at a big chain pet store, shop at Petco. In fact - if you're not lucky enough to live near a pet store that doesn't sell animals, and your choice of store is Petco or a local store that sells puppies and kittens, I'd say choose Petco. \n\nThey have a foundation that supports local shelters and they have tons of signs throughout their store encouraging people to adopt dogs and cats from their local shelters (they don't sell dogs or cats either - very good!) They do sell rabbits, birds, fish, ferrets, guinea pigs, etc. - and I wish they didn't. But next to each of those animals cages/areas, they do recommend checking with the local shelter first to see if adoption is an option. Also, they invite local shelters to bring adoptable cats and dogs to the stores for adoption events - that's pretty cool.\n\nThis particular store is very clean, and the staff is friendly. They have a wide selection of foods, toys, and supplies, but not the great Made in USA brands (no Merrick's or Evanger's.)

Strongly encourages adoptions from local shelters

It's a chain, but hey, they're successful for a reason

  • 2. Not into big box stores but...

    by: kritterz

I'm not one to shop big box stores but when my favorite local pet shop went out of business (yes, sadly due to Petco coming in) I finally decided to give Petco a try. I was happily surprised - it's light and bright and the employees are very helpful and seem happy to be there. They do carry some healthy foods such as Wellness but I wish they would increase their inventory to include other brands. What really won me over is that every Saturday they invite the humane society to bring adoptable pets in for the public to meet and adopt. That's a very good thing. Overall I like the store and will continue doing business there.

    Friendly service, happy atmosphere

Wish they'd carry more of the healthful foods
